WLC 2106 with AP1120
Hi,
I have a Cisco Aironet AIR-AP1120B-A-K9 802.11b Wireless Access Point. Can I integrate this AP with AIR-WLC2106-K9.
Thankx and regards
Satish
Hi Satish,
Just to add a note to the good info from Jerome (+5 points for this Jerome :)
Sadly, the 1120 with "B" Radio is not supported :(
Support for the 1121 was added in WLC version 4.0.155.0 Have a look at these related docs;
Software release 4.0.155.0 New Features
LWAPP for Cisco Aironet 1100 Series Access Points (802.11g radio only) Allows the Cisco Aironet 1100 Series Access Point to be upgraded from autonomous access point mode to lightweight mode using the autonomous to lightweight mode upgrade tool.
Note You must install software release 4.0.155.0 on the controller before connecting 1100 series access points to the controller.

LWAPP Upgrade Tool Troubleshoot Tips
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/tech/tk722/tk809/technologies_tech_note09186a008072d9a1.shtml
Access points must run Cisco IOS Release 12.3(7)JA or later before you use the upgrade tool.
System Requirements
You can use the Autonomous to Lightweight Mode upgrade tool to install Cisco IOS Release 12.3(11)JX on these access points:
**All 1100 series access points containing MP21G (802.11g) radios
All 1130, 1230, and 1240 series access points
All modular 1200 series access points running Cisco IOS software and containing these supported radios:
802.11g: MP21G, MP31G
802.11a: AIR-RM21A-x-K9, AIR-RM22A-x-K9
All 1300 series access points in access point mode
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/ios/release/notes/b311jx1.html
Cisco has released a free tool called the "Autonomous to Lightweight Mode Upgrade Tool" that allows selected Cisco Aironet autonomous access point models to be configured for lightweight mode operation.
The Autonomous to Lightweight Mode Upgrade Tool supports the following models:
Cisco Aironet 1240AG Series access points
Cisco Aironet 1230AG Series access points
Cisco Aironet 1200 Series access points that contain 802.11g (AIR-MP21G-x-K9) and/or second-generation 802.11a radios (AIR-RM21A-x-K9 or AIR-RM22A-x-K9)
Cisco Aironet 1130AG Series access points
**Cisco Aironet 1100 Series Access Points that contain 802.11g radios (AIR-AP1121G-x-K9)
Cisco Aironet 1300 Series Access Points/Bridges (AIR-BR1310G-x-K9 or AIR-BR1310G-x-K9-R). A Cisco Aironet 1300 Series operating in Lightweight Access Point Protocol (LWAPP) mode only operates as an access point. This series does not support LWAPP bridging mode.
The Autonomous to Lightweight Mode Upgrade Tool supports a process to migrate an autonomous access point from autonomous mode to lightweight mode. Unlike a VxWorks to Cisco IOS Software upgrade, this process is a Cisco IOS Software upgrade to the existing Cisco IOS Software image-not an operating system "swapout". In converted access points operating in lightweight mode, Cisco IOS Software continues to run on the access point, while LWAPP is used to communicate with a wireless LAN controller. Since LWAPP supports automatic access point configuration, there is no need to retain or convert the original autonomous Cisco IOS Software access point configuration.

WLC 2106 and Linksys Bridge WET610N works with 7.0.116.0 release?
Hi all,
i'm having troubles with WLC 2106 controller and several wireless bridges, so i'd like to know if i can fix it in some way.
My environment is as follows:
1 WLC 2106 with 2 Aironet 1240G
I have a production appliance that needs an ethernet port to work, so i bought a Linksys Bridge WET610N to make it works via wireless.
The Linksys bridge connects to the 1240G as a client and works well, but the appliance connected to the ethernet port of the bridge is unreachable.
Searching for the problem, i found that the wlc act as a proxy arp for the wireless clients and being the ethernet appliance a "passive" client, the controller isn't aware of it.
My WLC is running the 7.0.98.0 firmware. In the release notes for the 7.0.116.0, in the "Non-Cisco WGB Support" seems to state that now also non cisco bridges can work using the passive client feature. I've already enabled it on my controller but this didn't solve my problem.
Can anyone tell me if the upgrade to the 7.0.116.0 can fix it?
Thanks in advance
Riccardo CoppolaI'm not sure what (cheap) devices can do the wgb feature that is inter-brand compatible.
The thing is that the WLC enforces the rule "1 wireless client = 1 client". Meaning you can't bridge multiple clients behind a wireless clients, that just screws up roaming mechanisms etc ...
Cisco WGBs have the IAPP protocol to tell the WLC "listen, I'm a WGB wireless client and those are the wired clients connected to me, allow them on the network".
What does "universal WGB" feature does is that the WGB forwards the traffic of the client (only 1 client supported in this case !) to the infrastructure AP but the WGB never sends anything with its own mac address. It uses the client mac address as source.
This means that the WLC has no way of knowing that there is more than 1 device. It just thinks that your wired client is a wireless client.
So it's more than mac cloning since the WgB has to be the one authenticating to the infrastructure (Wpa/wpa2 whatsoever) by spoofing the client mac. The WGB is still in charge of roaming decisions and so on and so on...
I hope it clarifies the situation ? -
Want to configure wpa2 enterprise in wlc 2106
Hi,
I want to configure the wlc 2106 with wpa2 enterprise .... i reckon that iI need ACS server ( Radius Server ) with server certificate as well client certificate.
how do i configure the redius server to get access through wpa2 enterprise .. If i am wrong , what are all things required to enable wpa2 enterprise with AES encryption .
Is it possible to get the evalution copy of acs server with certificate ?
how to go ahead for the same .
It would be great help me to get the proper answer for configuration of wpa2 enterprise with AES ...The below link may help you..

Hi.
I want to know how to join the AP1522 to a WLC 2106.
The Controller and the AP are in the network, but the AP can't be joined to the controller. What is missing?First of all make sure that the APs can communicate and get IP address from DHCP server (it might be an external DHCP or internal pool running on WLC).
Are your APs on the same subnet as controller? -
Hi all and thank you in advance for any you help/advice you might be able to offer....
I'm having problems getting a WLC (7.0.220.0) working using LDAP (Windows 2008). This evening, in an effort to troubleshoot the problem further, I have configured the customer's ASA to use LDAP too and run a test....as you can see below, the test works flawlessly (on the ASA).
aaa-server LDAP_TEST protocol ldap
aaa-server LDAP_TEST host x.x.x.x
server-port 389
ldap-base-dn OU=Users,OU=IT Dept (South),DC=yyy,DC=co,DC=zzz
ldap-scope subtree
ldap-login-password *
ldap-login-dn CN=ldap,OU=Users,OU=IT Dept (South),DC=yyy,DC=co,DC=zzz
server-type microsoft
ASA/act# test aaa-server authentication LDAP_TEST host x.x.x.x username ldap password password
INFO: Attempting Authentication test to IP address <x.x.x.x> (timeout: 12 seconds)
INFO: Authentication Successful
ASA/act#
Now, my understanding is that the ASA only supports PAP (clear text) as Authentication method when communicating to an LDAP server....while on the Controller, I am using EAP-FAST....so my understanding would be that only EAP-FAST/GTC or EAP-FAST/MSCHAPv2 (IF the LDAP server is setup to return a clear text password) are supported.
On the Controller, I am using the very same settings as I have used on the ASA (for the LDAP server configuration). However, users are still unable to Authenticate....they Associate, but do not Authenticate. The clients are all Windows 7 and are setup to use the in-built Cisco EAP-FAST as Authentication method. We are not using certificates.
The thing is that I'm pretty sure that both the Windows 7 clients and the Controller are setup correctly but, as I said, the clients are still unable to authenticate.
I guess that my questions are these:
- on the client side, you can setup the laptops to use "Any method" as authentication method...but how does this exactly work? do they try both EAP-GTC and EAP-MSCHAPv2 (i.e. if it can't authenticate through EAP-GTC will then try EAP-MSCHAPv2?)
- is it better to hardcode the clients to use EAP-GTC or EAP-MSCHAPv2 (instead of default "Any method")....when working on an LDAP environment
- how can I check that the MS 2008 server is indeed setup to "return a clear text password" if using EAP-FAST/MSCHAPv2 (and I do realize that this is probably a question for a Microsoft forum)
- how can I check the the LDAP server is configured to support EAP-GTC and/or EAP-MSCHAPv2??
Thanks again. This is not an acceptable answer. Steve, do you work for Cisco, or are you commenting on personal experience & knowledge?
I have had a working RADIUS configuration for 2 years+ of an ASA 5510 for authentication of AnyConnect SSL & IPSEC VPN clients with AD, and a WLC 2106 for authentication of WPA2-Enterprise w/802.1x certificates with AD. Both were configured to communication to the same RADIUS server that is a Windows Server 2003 DC with IAS/RADIUS and a CA installed. During the planning for installing a new Windows Server 2008 R2 DC, I decided to attempt to remove my reliance on RADIUS since authenticating directly with LDAP is becoming more common. I was successfully able to configure our ASA to do direct LDAP queries to AD, but similar to "superduperlopez" and "rschwenderman", I have been unable to configure the WLC the same way.
I feel like the following line in Cisco's documentation is unsatisfactory: "For example, Microsoft Active Directory is not supported because it does not return a clear-text password."
I would take this to mean that the ASA is working correctly due to either:
A) The ASA is accepting clear-text passwords from AD, and AD is configured to pass clear-text passwords, or
B) The ASA is not accepting clear-text passwords from AD, and AD is not configured to pass clear-text passwords
Now this would lead me to the following:
A) Cisco has not properly updated the WLC documentation to instruct users how to correctly configured the WLC to do backend LDAP queries, or
B) Cisco has not implemented the technology changes that were made in the ASA to the WLC
This frustrates the average network admin, as it is seen by us as "If the ASA can do it, why can't the WLC". Also, don't get this confused with any "client" issues, as all that is being asked for is the WLC to using a different backend "authentication" server while not modifying the client side at all. The concept of "Local EAP" seems to fit, but doesn't work.
I would really appreciate someone giving some insight on this topic, as there are three customers on this forum post that have had the same problem withing the last 2 months.
The previous posters, and myself, are not looking for someone to retype the documentation, but rather explain how it is working on one of Cisco's security products, but not the other. -
Hello,
I have problem with new one WLC 2106 controller. I make this basic configuration (after reset):
(Cisco Controller) >show interface summary
Interface Name Port Vlan Id IP Address Type Ap Mgr Guest
ap-manager 1 10 10.10.10.21 Static Yes No
management 1 10 10.10.10.20 Static No No
virtual N/A N/A 1.1.1.1 Static No No
At this point, everything works OK. Controller is accesible via HTTPS, AP (one 1130) is connected too. But next I need create new WLAN and another interface VLAN - named ak-lan
config interface create ak-lan
config interface port ak-lan 1
HTTPS acces is still working, but when I configure IP adress:
config interface address dynamic-interface ak-lan 10.10.11.10 255.255.255.0 10.10.11.1
HTTPS acces stops. In fact, it seem like HTTPS starts on new interface - it's accesible via 10.10.11.10, but (after certificate warning) shows only empty page (Page is not accesible..)
I dont have an idea why. I tray downgrade software (originaly comes with 7.0.98.0) to 6.0.196.0, whitch I use on another same controller, but the behavior is the same. Now I use software 6.0.199.4. Again the same behavior.
"show interface summary" says:
(Cisco Controller) >show interface summary
Interface Name Port Vlan Id IP Address Type Ap Mgr Guest
ak-lan 1 11 10.10.11.10 Dynamic No No
ap-manager 1 10 10.10.10.21 Static Yes No
management 1 10 10.10.10.20 Static No No
virtual N/A N/A 1.1.1.1 Static No No
(Cisco Controller) >
All interfaces (excluding virtual) matched to ping. All ïnterfaces have netmask 255.255.255.0.
There was another strange thing - "show sysinfo" says that I use sw 6.0.199.4 and emergency is 7.0.98.0, but "show boot" says:
(Cisco Controller) >show boot

Just recently I am having issues with my WLC 2106 WiFi network and iPhones. For the past week, the iPhones have been locking up the network much like as it was described with the ARP issues with the exception that what I have been reading, this issue did not effect the 2100 series.
I've done searches but have not found anything applicable to what is happening now.
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated. It's running on v. 4.0.217.0. Right now I'm controlling who is accessing the wifi via MAC filter to prevent anyone with an iphone to log on but that just doesn't cut it since there's a lot of visitors coming in to use the wifi.
I won't be able to go in and do more testing for a week or two to get that debug log.
But this seems to be a common issue with at least the 2106s. As soon as anyone logs in with an iphone, the controller locks up and the only thing to do is reboot. It only fairly recently started happening so maybe it's only with the newer iphones? -
Microsoft Server 2003 / PEAP / WLC 2106
Has anyone ever had a certificate vanishing issue on an M$ Server 2003? For some strange reason the certificate under my IAS RAS policy keeps disappearing after an undetermined amount of time? The server is the only DC / CA root / IAS in the forest. I'm not sure why the self-signed cert. will not remain in the cert. store?
Current config.:
(2) WLC 2106 (both RADIUS clients on DC/IAS)
(5) 1141 LAPs
Authentication: PEAP/MS-CHAPv2
Encryption: TKIP/AES
Any ideas? Thanks. In 4.1, disabling DHCP proxy did just that, it disabled the "proxy". If you ever look at your dhcp lease of a wireless client, it comes from a dhcp server of 1.1.1.1 (virtual IP of the controller). With proxy disabled, the address will no longer be masked.
In 4.2 and beyond, disabling dhcp proxy actually disables the DHCP Relay that is the process of the controller sending the dhcp requests to a specified server.
So if in 4.1, you had "dhcp proxy" disabled, in 4.2 and beyond, you are actually disabling the relay as well.
If this is indeed the case, enable dhcp proxy, or add an IP Helper adress to your router for this vlan, just like you would normally do for Wired clients. -
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN .
HI All,
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN . the WLC are providing the HQ and one of the Branches the Wireless services .
Am using all the available 9 SSIDs at the HQ , and am using only 4 of it at the Brnche.
The problem that i have are happening only at the Branch office as i cant room between the SSIDs within Diferent VLANs but i can do it with the one that pointing to the same VLAN. Once the client ( Laptop/Phone ) connected to one of the SSIDs. it imposiible to have him connected to the other ones with Different VLAN. meanwhile, It says its connected to the other SSID but its not getting IP from that pool.
here is the Show Run-Config from my WLC .. and the Problem happening between the SSID AMOBILE and ASTAFF. i have the Debug while am switching between the SSIDs if needed .

In this mode, the clients are still remembers on the WLC until the session timer/idle timer expires. So switching between SSID's in h-reap will not be the same when switching when the AP's are in local mode.
Take a look at the client when connected in FlexConnect in the WLC GUI monitor tab. Thus will show you what ssid and vlan the client is on. Now switch to a different ssid and compare this. It's probably the same because the client has not timed out. Now go back to the other ssid and look again. Now on the WLC, remove or delete the client and then switch to the other ssid at the same time. Or switch SSID's and then remove the client. The client will join the new ssid and in the monitor tab, you should see the info.
There is no need to have clients have multiple SSID's unless your testing. Devices should only have one ssid profile configured to eliminate any connectivity issues from the device wanting to switch SSID's.

WLC-2106 and multiple interfaces on the same network
Hi there,
I recently created a TAC request to the Cisco support regarding our WLC-2106, but they could not help me. Basically I just learned that you can create new interfaces for the wireless LAN controller and then dedicate them to a given wireless network (SSID). This way I could more effectively utilize network bandwidth also. Problem is that all of the interfaces have to be in a different network segment in order to work, which is not what I want. I specifically want to have several interfaces on the same network segment.
Has anyone tried to accomplish the same?Basically what I've misunderstood is that all the traffic generated by our wireless clients have been going through the single 100Mbit/s ethernet port on the wireless LAN controller (management interface), and to mitigate this I thought I could create new interfaces (ports) and dedicate those to given WLAN networks.. I see now that this is not supported. Not inside the same network at least.
So, by reading further and consulting my best friend Google I learned about a setting called "AP Mode". Changing that from Local (the default) to H-REAP the APs should not route their traffic anymore through the management interface on the wireless controller, but instead route all the client traffic directly to the local LAN. This way you effectively remove the 100Mbit/s bottle-neck when all the APs were using the management interface both for configuration and client data traffic.
It seems you also have to enable H-REAP Local switching from a given WLAN network in addition to changing the AP Mode of your access points to H-REAP. I'm still in the testing phase here so should anyone have any insight to this, I'd be greatful to hear more. -
WLC 5508 with LAP-1142n - Several Errors
Hello all,
I had installed a WLC 5508 with 7 LAP 1142n and 2 converted AP 1131abg.
I am seeing some errors relating 2 issues.
1st- One particular AP 1142 is disassociating and reseting the radios.

I had some search, and the new discovery cause, might be that the AP didnt know what WLC do associate, in a multi-controller environment. This is not the case. I only have one WLC in the same management vlan.
2st-The Radius server is beeing related in the logs as been deactivated. I raise the server time-out on Radius configuration option, but it still continues to do it.

Is this meaning the WLC stop sending request to the Radius Server ? We dont have BackUp Radius.
As far as i know, its always the same mac-address client that is associated to that error, maybe a iphone.
I had so many clients in that SSID and they are all working good.
The Radius server is a NPS from windows Server 2008

Wireless –> All APs –> High Availability tab, and did it only to the AP that is taking this beahviour.
Is this mandatory for a 1 controller only ?
No mather what the manual say, after that the AP is rebooting 2 mins in 2 mins... with the same kind of messages.
The interface on the switch is getting a few input errors and the same numbers of crc... but are so few...
Next step ... i will change it to another one's place/pathing cable.
Regarding the Radius messages... any ideas ?
I'm already on 30 sec's of server timeout.

Deployment of WLC-5508 with 2702i-D have performance issue.
Hi Team,
We have centrally deployed WLC-5508 with 50 AP licence along with HA scenario. we have 3 locations.
1- HQ. have 26 AP with POWINJ5.
2- Branch location A- 8 AP with POWINJ5.
3. Branch location B have 8 AP with POWINJ4.
my exception is to achieve that single SSID with dynamic VLAN from group police (NPS). MY HO have 26 AP and those are working in local mode.
and branches are connected through flexconnect mode. and all are working with different-2 NPS.
Now i am facing a problem with this deployment are following.
1- branch A have performance issue.
2- HQ have performance issue.
3- i don't want to go with dedicated NPS for every location.
In order to achieve this deployment i want only single SSID with primary and secondary NPS at my HQ with dynamic VLAN for respective departmental users vlans..
above is my problem and concern. otherwise i am successfully achieving this solution with dedicated NPS with single group policy. but when i am going forward to achieve my expectation that time i am facing authentication issue at my HQ and sometimes am not able to get proper VLAN IPs. at my HQ.
kindly help me in that to understand where I am doing wrong things to achieve my expectation.
Thanks.
NalinI am facing 2 different problems.
1st issue- in existing setup we have throughput issue. (while downloading or uploading any data from the internet or Intranet, that time wireless clients are facing slowness of the Speed. and same time when i am trying from LAN i am not facing any issue)
2nd Issue- I want to achieve only single SSID with primary and secondary NPS (AD group is bind with vlan Attributes) with dynamic VLAN for respective departmental users.
for Issue no 2 i have created SSID to achieve the single ssid parameter for every location. in order to achieve i have change all access points mode local to Flexconnect mode after that i have created AP groups location wise and then create flexconnect Groups where i have mapped all the vlan through AAA VLAN-ACL mapping. created interface group and mapped all the vlans in that group.
for more understanding please go through the below mentioned CLI view.

Does someone know if WLC 2106 support AP 1140 ? I read that AP 1140 is CAPWAP only and I don't know if WLC 2106 supports CAPWAP.
ThanksYes it does, you may have to upgrade your controller software to get 802.11n and CAPWAP, use the latest code 6.0.182.
CAPWAP was supported from code 5.2.157
The max throughput on the 2106 though is only 100mbps so yo wont see the highest speeds -
WLC integration with LDAP to authenticate domain users without Radius
Dear All,
I have a WLC 4404 with LWAPs, the customer has a microsoft LDAP and all users are joined to the domain and he wants the users to be authenticated against their domain accounts and this should be done automatically so that when users login to windows they are also authenticated and joined the WLAN.
so how we can do that with the simplest way, without Radius server using only the LDAP and wwithout envolving any certificates.
also i need to know when i add LDAP server to the WLC, how can i know that this LDAP is properly inegrated with the WLC ?
thanks and BRHi,
I have followed the following document to make users authenticate against their AD domain accounts:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_configuration_example09186a008093f1b9.shtml
the device and the root of PKI certificates for the WLC were generated and installed successfully on the WLC, and now we are in the client (end user) part starting from the section "Generating a device certificate for the client" page 17, which as per the document to be done from the client PC using the client domain account, which consequently means this process is to be repeated for each end user separately, so my question is there any way to generate some sort of general certificate for all clients to be pushed through group policy to all client instead of making it PC by PC ? -
WLC 5508 with version 7.0.98.0 and AIR-LAP1242ag
hi, recently i have deployed wlc 5508 with ap 1262. initially i had trouble with the existing version on the wlc (6..0.199.0) which AIR-LAP1262N-E-K9 was not registering with wlc. i have upgraded the wlc to 6.0.199.4 ver still it was not registering. finally i have upgraded to 7.0.98.0 and all the 40 AP's ( AIR-LAP1262N-E-K9 ) are addedd and its working fine.
Now my issue is, at the same site i have 12 nos of AIR-LAP1242ag autnomous AP's which i need to convert to lightweight ap and register with wlc. where i am stuck currently. after loading the recovery image (c1240-rcvk9w8-tar.123-7.JX9.tar) the ap reboots and can see it register with wlc within seconds contollers pushed the new image and once the ap reboots, never register again.
does anyone has any idea? After adding the country codes GB and RU.. in my test setup 1242 is registered...i will have it run for couple hours and see the result
