DHCP setup help on AIR-WLC-2112 with LAP1042N
I am new to wireless. I would like to statically assign ip addresses for my controller(AIR_WLC-2112) and my access point (LAP1042N). I would then like the controller to distribute dhcp addresses for users. What is the best way in doing this?
Hi Mark,
You can certainly setup your network for 2 VLANs for different wireless networks. You will only need to setup the switchports to the WLC as trunks. In other words, the APs will simply reside in the vlan you define (access switchports) and they will tunnel all traffic back to the controller, regardless of client vlan. The WLC will then determine which vlan the traffic needs to go on.
You have 2 ways of setting your AP IP addresses as static -- you can statically assign them through the console during initial installation:
capwap ap ip address
capwap ap ip default-gateway
capwap ap controller ip
Or, you can simply let the APs start by using DHCP, and auto discovery of the WLCs via DNS lookup of "cisco-capwap-controller", or DHCP option 43. Once they join the controller you can assign them static addresses in the WLC AP settings.
Now, onto the last question regarding your WAN sites. We do have options for you there as well -- the feature we're looking at would be H-REAP. Traditionally the APs tunnel all wireless traffic back to the controller. However, in H-REAP mode, you can specify the APs to put traffic on the network right at the local switch, so it wouldn't have to get tunneled across your WAN (depending on WAN bandwidth). You still configure the AP and manage it centrally. For more information on this feature, please check out the H-REAP deployment guide:

WLC 2112 & MacBook or Apple Devices ???
Dear All,
Last week i succesfully configured the WLC 2112 with 12 AP ofcourse :) with 3 SSIDs
the issue i am facing is that users with MacBooks & Ipad's are having issues connecting to new wireless setup. where as all other Brand Laptops and PDAs are getting connected just fine.
When i am trying to connect a MacBook to a SSID and when i enter the password after 10 or 15 sec the MacBook self assigns an IP address to itself intead of getting the password from WLC's DHCP.
i have set Authentication level is basic WEP key protection.
Channel set to overlapping channel 10.
Experts i need your Experties. will appriciate if i can get a Quick Response.Hi,
Are the Mac and Apple devices configured to get a dynamic dhcp ? What is the Subnet from which these devices getting IP from ?
Could you disable Aironet extenstions under wlan > advanced section and test as this enhances the third party clients to be able to connect to Cisco device.
Regards,

I've read previous discussions (i.e., "wlc 5508 multiple country codes + mesh ap") on this forum that stated Mesh APs can't be supported on a WLC set-up with more than one country code configured. If you have Outdoor APs which are set-up for local mode only, and not used in a Mesh wireless architecture (using Mesh Beacons), will this apply as well? I don't know if there are any caveats to this. Or if Cisco 1522/1552 APs can't be supported on a WLC using more than one country code period, regardless for how they are used, since they are considered Mesh APs. Another question, can a WLC support two regions (Region E and Region A), in a two country code assignment? I've read on the forum the downfalls for using more than one country code on a WLC, so understand that it will use the lowest common denominator settings (i.e., power, channels) for operation, so this isn't ideal.
I want to stick to one controller using one country code only. This isn't something I want to do, but we had an issue with an order being processed for APs, which resulted in the wrong region APs being delivered by a vendor, and leadership is exploring alternative options. So, the above is worst case scenario planning if we can't swap the APs back for some legal reason, or if it takes too long to accomplish. We could always purchase a smaller WLC with a license size to support only the different region APs purchased if it comes to it.Hi,
As per my experience, Normal APs(Local Mode) can work with multiple Country Code .
WLC can support multiple country code but it's a bad idea to have it. Only common channel, power will allowed.
Best is to buy a 2504WLC and use it.

I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN .
HI All,
I have a Problem with Romming Between SSIDs withing the same WLC but with deferent VLAN . the WLC are providing the HQ and one of the Branches the Wireless services .
Am using all the available 9 SSIDs at the HQ , and am using only 4 of it at the Brnche.
The problem that i have are happening only at the Branch office as i cant room between the SSIDs within Diferent VLANs but i can do it with the one that pointing to the same VLAN. Once the client ( Laptop/Phone ) connected to one of the SSIDs. it imposiible to have him connected to the other ones with Different VLAN. meanwhile, It says its connected to the other SSID but its not getting IP from that pool.
here is the Show Run-Config from my WLC .. and the Problem happening between the SSID AMOBILE and ASTAFF. i have the Debug while am switching between the SSIDs if needed .

Tx Power Level 4 ..........Well you need to understand the behavior of h-reap or what it's called now, FlexConnect. In this mode, the clients are still remembers on the WLC until the session timer/idle timer expires. So switching between SSID's in h-reap will not be the same when switching when the AP's are in local mode.
Take a look at the client when connected in FlexConnect in the WLC GUI monitor tab. Thus will show you what ssid and vlan the client is on. Now switch to a different ssid and compare this. It's probably the same because the client has not timed out. Now go back to the other ssid and look again. Now on the WLC, remove or delete the client and then switch to the other ssid at the same time. Or switch SSID's and then remove the client. The client will join the new ssid and in the monitor tab, you should see the info.
There is no need to have clients have multiple SSID's unless your testing. Devices should only have one ssid profile configured to eliminate any connectivity issues from the device wanting to switch SSID's.

This might be a really stupid question but I need to ask just so that I get a definitive answer. I have a customer that is using a WLC 2112 and has maxed out the licenses for the WLC. I have suggested for him to purchase a 2504 with 30 or 40 licenses to replace the existing 2112. He doesn't want to purchase 30 to 40 licenses and doesn't want to remove the 2112 from the network environment. He would rather purchase a WLC 2504 with 15 licenses and just add that into the network.
My question is, will there be a problem running a 2504 and a 2112 on the same network? Or can I just make one a primary and one a secondary? That should be fine. Just make sure the WLCs are running the same code version and everything should work fine. This is required for APs failover from one WLC to another. You don't want the APs upgrading or downgrading code versions every time the ap moves from the primary to the secondary WLC.

Question about WLAN Site Surveys with 802.11n APs - 1142s
I do site surveys a little differently that everyone else nowadays, I believe. In the past, I used an autonomous 1230 or 1240, but now I use a lightweight 1142. I configure a port in a room to be on the AP VLAN and I connect my 1142 to the port and hang it where I want - it then gets on the controller and start broadcasting just like the finished product will. This works well except for the time it takes me to configure a port on the switch and the bootup time for the AP. I'm one of the Networks Architects on a campus of almost 200 buildings, so I have access to all the routers and switches and can configure anything I need while onsite.
Now I want to have someone else (in-house) to do our surveys - but this person(s) does not have access to switches and routers, and that won't ever change.
I tried configuring a lightweight 1142 in HREAP mode to handoff to this person, but it appears the power and channel settings don't stick on the 5 GHz side.
Scrapping that idea, I now have to build out an autonomous 1142 for site surveying. I missed out on this step because I went from buying 1242s (can jump between lightweight and autonomous) to 1142s (which didn't have an autonomous image at that time, I believe). This is why I started surveying with lightweight 1142s.
I'm curious if anyone has gone through the configuration of an autonomous 1142 and wouldn't mind sharing their "lessons learned". I haven't seen a matrix of features that are supported/not supported on 1142s when configured for lightweight vs. autonomous.
I currently aim for designing around the 5 GHz radios set to 10 dBm, 20% cell overlap. I also turn on 40 MHz channels in 5 GHz range. This usually ends up with an AP in every other or every third classroom, depending on how old the building is and how many times it has been renovated. I can't "just throw APs out there" since each building is different - some are thin concrete block, some are poured cement, and some are block with metal mesh and stucco. Those usually end up with on AP per classroom.
Does anyone have a matrix on what can and cannot be turned on in an autonomous AP? I would like to get my config as close to the lightweight scenario we deploy for all of our production WLANs.There is no matrix as to what you're asking for. I've done conversions and configurations of AP's from Lightweight to Autonomous and vice-versa. The configuration of the autonomous AP can be identical to the Lightweight AP from a client perspective.
My current setup has 3 SSID's (VoIP, Data, and Guest) on the autonomous AP. Couple things I do:
1. PoE powered AP through a Tessco power pack.
2. VLANs have to be enabled on the AP (1 for each SSID)
3. The SSID's will have to be created and each AP mapped to a VLAN
4. The SSID's will be need to be enabled on both radios if desired.
The easiest way to configure the AP is to power it with either the power cord.
Console into the AP and let it boot. Assign an IP address to the BVI 1 interface.
Assign an IP address on the wired NIC of our laptop and plug an ethernet cable into the AP's ethernet port.
Configure the AP as listed above via the web gui.
This is by no means a complete answer, but your questions were all over the map.

WLC 5508 with LAP-1142n - Several Errors
Hello all,
I had installed a WLC 5508 with 7 LAP 1142n and 2 converted AP 1131abg.
I am seeing some errors relating 2 issues.
1st- One particular AP 1142 is disassociating and reseting the radios.

I had some search, and the new discovery cause, might be that the AP didnt know what WLC do associate, in a multi-controller environment. This is not the case. I only have one WLC in the same management vlan.
2st-The Radius server is beeing related in the logs as been deactivated. I raise the server time-out on Radius configuration option, but it still continues to do it.

Is this meaning the WLC stop sending request to the Radius Server ? We dont have BackUp Radius.
As far as i know, its always the same mac-address client that is associated to that error, maybe a iphone.
I had so many clients in that SSID and they are all working good.
The Radius server is a NPS from windows Server 2008

Is this mandatory for a 1 controller only ?
No mather what the manual say, after that the AP is rebooting 2 mins in 2 mins... with the same kind of messages.
The interface on the switch is getting a few input errors and the same numbers of crc... but are so few...
Next step ... i will change it to another one's place/pathing cable.
Regarding the Radius messages... any ideas ?
I'm already on 30 sec's of server timeout.

Deployment of WLC-5508 with 2702i-D have performance issue.
Hi Team,
We have centrally deployed WLC-5508 with 50 AP licence along with HA scenario. we have 3 locations.
1- HQ. have 26 AP with POWINJ5.
2- Branch location A- 8 AP with POWINJ5.
3. Branch location B have 8 AP with POWINJ4.
my exception is to achieve that single SSID with dynamic VLAN from group police (NPS). MY HO have 26 AP and those are working in local mode.
and branches are connected through flexconnect mode. and all are working with different-2 NPS.
Now i am facing a problem with this deployment are following.
1- branch A have performance issue.
2- HQ have performance issue.
3- i don't want to go with dedicated NPS for every location.
In order to achieve this deployment i want only single SSID with primary and secondary NPS at my HQ with dynamic VLAN for respective departmental users vlans..
above is my problem and concern. otherwise i am successfully achieving this solution with dedicated NPS with single group policy. but when i am going forward to achieve my expectation that time i am facing authentication issue at my HQ and sometimes am not able to get proper VLAN IPs. at my HQ.
kindly help me in that to understand where I am doing wrong things to achieve my expectation.
Thanks.
NalinI am facing 2 different problems.
1st issue- in existing setup we have throughput issue. (while downloading or uploading any data from the internet or Intranet, that time wireless clients are facing slowness of the Speed. and same time when i am trying from LAN i am not facing any issue)
2nd Issue- I want to achieve only single SSID with primary and secondary NPS (AD group is bind with vlan Attributes) with dynamic VLAN for respective departmental users.
for Issue no 2 i have created SSID to achieve the single ssid parameter for every location. in order to achieve i have change all access points mode local to Flexconnect mode after that i have created AP groups location wise and then create flexconnect Groups where i have mapped all the vlan through AAA VLAN-ACL mapping. created interface group and mapped all the vlans in that group.
for more understanding please go through the below mentioned CLI view.

Hi!!! Please help with the solution.
I have one WLC 2504, 4 Cisco 1141 APs and one AP 1602.
Yesterday, I upgrade the WLC with version 7.5.102 to version 7.6.100.
After the upgrade in Message Logs on the WLC at the same time see the following message:

WLC 5508 with version 7.0.98.0 and AIR-LAP1242ag
hi, recently i have deployed wlc 5508 with ap 1262. initially i had trouble with the existing version on the wlc (6..0.199.0) which AIR-LAP1262N-E-K9 was not registering with wlc. i have upgraded the wlc to 6.0.199.4 ver still it was not registering. finally i have upgraded to 7.0.98.0 and all the 40 AP's ( AIR-LAP1262N-E-K9 ) are addedd and its working fine.
Now my issue is, at the same site i have 12 nos of AIR-LAP1242ag autnomous AP's which i need to convert to lightweight ap and register with wlc. where i am stuck currently. after loading the recovery image (c1240-rcvk9w8-tar.123-7.JX9.tar) the ap reboots and can see it register with wlc within seconds contollers pushed the new image and once the ap reboots, never register again.
does anyone has any idea? After adding the country codes GB and RU.. in my test setup 1242 is registered...i will have it run for couple hours and see the result

Cisco WLC 5508 with 3702APs - mobile hotspot for 2000 Guest users
Cisco WLC 5508 with 3702APs - mobile hotspot for 2000 Guest users
I've been given a fantastic "opportunity" by my boss to use our existing wireless infrastructure to provide internet access to potentially upto 2000 VIP guests arriving with BYOD devices, in a very densely populated area for a 3 day event. We are talking an area of approx 200m x 15m. Think of it as an awards ceremony/concert. The solution will also be mobile so we will be using internet breakout from different telcos as it will move to approx 20 countries. The area is also incredibly densely populated with other wifi APs. I did a brief site survey and AirMagnet could detect over 2500 other 'rogue' APs from where I was stood! I hope CleanAir works!
We need a simple authentication method for them to connect with zero admin from our side. We don't want to just offer up a rolling daily PSK as that's a bit amateur and we don't really want the VIP guests sharing the PSK with others during their stay. Ideally they could self-provision by providing an email address.
I know the WLC can handle webauth for local users but I don't think it scales very well. ie I don't think I can offer the account to several hundred people.
Cisco ISE looks a very expansive (and expensive) product but I don't think we need all it's capabilities (do I?). It would be nice to just ask a potential user for their email address and grant them access and email them next year. I've seen Cisco NAC but that looks over the top too for just guest users who will only be accessing a shared internet connection.
I've seen 3rd party supposed software solutions from Kiosk Antamedia etc do they work with Cisco Enterprise WLC solutions?
We'd like to limit users to a certain (low) bandwidth and block (say) torrent traffic to keep the general user experience worthwhile.
Does anybody have any case study documents or experience of such a project? As well as the authentication it's how well the APs will handle the dense potential number of clients trying to connect in such a confined space.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated from the knowledgeable community.
Cheers,
MikeHi Rasika,
We are having WLC 5508 model with software version running 7.4.121.0. AP Models are AIR-CAP2602I.
Normally our WAN links are good even while the issue pertains. We are connected to remote offices over ipsec site to site vpn for WAN. The link latency in WLC between the AP and the controller shows <1ms.
currently the Guest network is using WPA2-PSK auth given in the controller. we are trying to find a option to make the Guest wireless auth local to the office, and see if this solves the problem.
any suggestions,
Thank you,

Did u tried with these settings:
9600 baud
8 data bits
No flow control
1 stop bit
No parity
If the console is not responsive, then its a hardware failure and you should contact the TAC or You should RMA'd it.
Be aware: WLC 2100 Series are EOL/EOS.

Thansk,

[email protected]Yup, what said Scoot said .. Add the 5508 to the aps high availability. If you have WCS/NCS you can push this to the APs.
