WLC 2504 v7.5.102.0 Client Association Issues. Association not consistent
Hi All,
I'm having a strange issue whereby client association to my corporate or guest wifi ssid are not consistent. Sometimes I have no issues connecting repeatedly and other times I cannot connect and receive the "Windows was unable to connect to *SSID*"
I'm unable to determine whether it is a wireless association issue or if its a authentication issue as I have troubles connecting to both my secure (WPA2, AES, 802.1x) corporate wifi or my guest (Open Auth) wifi.
Currently per day I have about 15 users using the wifi on both SSID's. The access points are right in the vicinity of the users. I have 2 LAP1142 access points on separate 802.11a/b/g/n channels and signal strenght is always high.. I'm certain its not co-channel interference or interference whatsoever. RSSI values are -60dBm and SNR 30+ dB. On average I will have 10 users on the wireless fine but one or two people are unable to connect.
I have had wireshark run and when it does not connect I do not see anything in the logs. No traffic is captured!
I cannot see the AAA capturing anything. Signal strength as stated above is high ( I have the AP on my desk!)
Sometimes I can instantly connect with no troubles and other times its not association at all. I've recently updated to version 7.5 and these issues started to occur. Previous version 7.3 had no problems at all for years!.

To answer your question, sometimes I can connect and sometimes I cannot. This afternoon I haven't been able to connect much at all. 2 out of 20 times perhaps. Other users I can see are connected to the two access points in this office. This isn't just happening on my laptop but several laptops. Same symptom.

I can see that the WLC has tried to send a EAP-Request/Identity request to the client but no response back. I just don't understand why it works at times and why it doesn't.
It has the same issues on my guest network which is open authentication. Nothing has changed in regards to configuration and it has been working for years. Only thing that changed was a version upgrade to 7.5 three weeks ago.

Hello my name is Ivan:
I have a solution a unified solution wireless with a cisco wlc 7.2 and ap cisco. My issue is the follow:
My users are using laptops with OS windows 8, and they can not access to the network wireless because they authenticate in to the network using 802.1x wpa/wpa2 with tkip or aes.
I find a bug in the ios of the wlc. The number is CSCua29504. I would not to change the drivers in the laptop to join the users in to the solution.
Please is possible to find any software to do the upgrade in the wlc? Or perhaps we need to do an upgrade in to cisco lightweight access point?
Please help me in this issue.

So if you are NOT running any one of these codes, then yes. Upgrade your firmware is your solution.

WLC 2504 - French characters for guest web login page
Good day,
I have recently installed a WLC 2504 and I have the following issue:
When I modify the text for the web login page (Under security/Web Auth/Web Auth page), if I use french caracters such as (é, è, à, etc...) in the message body, it does not show up correctly on users computers. As we're a bilingual country, I must put a bilingual text message. Are there any settings or workaround out there to rectify this?

Right after sending this post, I tried typing the actual HTML code for the character instead and it seems to be working. I'm curious about custom webauth page, we may be able to customize it more than we thought we could do.

Client got not connection to wlan over wlc 2504 on 802.11b/g
Hi everybody,
We are using a wlc 2504 with 7.6.100.0 and AP 1532e.
I have the strange observacion that only clients with 802.11n (2.4GHz) can connect to the WLAN. Clients thats works only with 802.11b/g, they can't connect to the WLAN. Affected are all machines which want to connect with 802.11b/g.
This is a MESH WLAN with 5GHz backhaul and 2.4GHz for the user.

Thanks for any adviceIn some of the big name brands of wireless, there is "no such thing" as 802.11n on a 2.4 Ghz. No such thing because Cisco won't allow you (any more) to do channel bonding of 2.4 Ghz. It doesn't make any sense to bond an already restricted 2.4 Ghz non-overlapping channel (three) and squeeze this number down to two.
Can you check to ensure that the data rates for 802.11b are enabled? Maybe someone disabled data rates from 1 Mbps to 11 Mbps. -

Ran into a strange issue today, two 2504 controller's, one upgraded (from 7.2 to 7.0 due to 1310 not working) to the new firmware fine, the other chucks back a signauture issue, i've seen alot of post's about the 5508 having this issue, but not much about the 2504, anyone got any idea's
The unit not working has PSJ15 serial number which i believe is from 2011, the working unit has a PSJ16 serial number. Any idea's would be very helpful

Wlc 2504 7.4.100 to 7.4.110 upgrade fails
Hello,
I've got a strange behaviour while upgrading my 2504 wlc from 7.4.100 to 7.4.110. I used the gui procedure to transfer the updated aes file to the wlc. The procedure started fine, finished downloading, and then the wlc got completely stuck on "Writing New RTOS to flash" message, all ap loosed connection all clients down, claimings, etc... Then after more than 10 minutes watching my laptop screen I decided to hard reboot the wlc.
Initially I saw the new image booting but, at the end, I finally figured out that the backup image instead booted and the show boot from the controller shows the following:

The controller now is working fine with the old image, but I need the upgrade.

Guidelines and Limitations
• When H-REAP access points that are associated with a controller that has all the 7.0.x software releases that are prior to 7.0.240.0 upgrade to the 7.4.100.60 release, the access points lose their VLAN support configuration if it was enabled. The VLAN mappings revert to the default values of the VLAN of the associated interface. This issue does not occur if you upgrade from 7.0.240.0 or later 7.0.x release to the 7.4.100.60 release.
• While a client sends an HTTP request, the Controller intercepts it for redirection to login page. If the HTTP request intercepted by Controller is fragmented, the Controller drops the packet as the HTTP request does not contain enough information required for redirection.
• We recommend that you install Wireless LAN Controller Field Upgrade Software for Release 1.7.0.0-FUS, which is a special AES package that contains several system-related component upgrades. These include the bootloader, field recovery image, and FPGA/MCU firmware. Installing the FUS image requires special attention because it installs some critical firmware. The FUS image is independent of the runtime image. For more information, see http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/fus_rn_1_7_0_0.html.
• If you are using a Cisco 2500 Series controller and you intend to use the Application Visibility and Control (AVC) and NetFlow protocol features, you must install Wireless LAN Controller Field Upgrade Software for Release 1.8.0.0-FUS. This is not required if you are using other controller hardware models. For more information, see http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/fus_1_8_0_0.html.
• After you upgrade to the 7.4 release, networks that were not affected by the existing preauthentication ACLs might not work because the rules are now enforced. That is, networks with clients configured with static DNS servers might not work unless the static server is defined in the preauthentication ACL.
• On 7500 controllers if FIPS is enabled, the reduced boot options are displayed only after a bootloader upgrade.
Note Bootloader upgrade is not required if FIPS is disabled.
• If you require a downgrade from one release to another, you might lose the configuration from your current release. The workaround is to reload the previous controller configuration files saved on the backup server or to reconfigure the controller.
• It is not possible to directly upgrade to the 7.4.100.60 release from a release that is older than 7.0.98.0.
• You can upgrade or downgrade the controller software only between certain releases. In some instances, you must first install an intermediate release prior to upgrading to software release 7.4.100.60. Table 2 shows the upgrade path that you must follow before downloading software release 7.4.100.60.

WLC 2504 Connectivity Problems
This is a tricky one.
I installed a 2504 WLC with three AP's. Two SSID’s were configured, one with WPA2/AES-TIKIP and the other with Web Auth.
After installation, customers could connect to WLAN without problem and .
The problem that is occurring is that since the beginning of week, customers PDA's, cell phones and iPad and cannot access Internet with any of the two WLAN but clients who used laptop have no connection problems. Also the DHCP Server is assigning IP's correctly.
This problem also occurs with test SSID I created which is Open Auth. I see associated Cell phones and IPAD to the WLC but none of these answers ping from the WLC.

Hello,
I'm getting very confused in how to set up redundancy with WLC 2504. Some sources talk about Client SSO, some about N+1.
But it seems that although I should use Client SSO with firmware 7.6, the WLC 2504 doesn't support it.
When I type config redundancy, I have no choice
>config redundancy ?
unit Configure redundancy unit [primary | secondary]
So I typed "config redundancy unit primary" on my 2504 and "config redundancy unit secondary" on my 2504-HA
And when I issue this command I have very little information
>show redundancy summary
Type of the Unit = Primary
Does someone has guidelines for redundancy with WLC 2504 on firmware 7.6 ?

Something I didn't understand in the documentation is this.
Is there a replication of configuration between the WLC primary and the HA ? I did read that they should have different network settings (IP addresses) so I understand that there is not a total replication, what about the rest of the configuration ?
The only result I have when I issue a command on the WLC-HA is this
>show redundancy summary
Type of the Unit = Secondary
It doesn't look exactly what I see in the documentation.

Yesterday, I upgrade the WLC with version 7.5.102 to version 7.6.100.

With what may be the problem exists? Any suggestion?Have you upgraded the FUS to 1.8.0.0? What happens if you try to boot from v7.5 do you see the messages and maybe boot back to v7.6?

WLC 2504 can't change WAP name or switch off CDP via WLC gui
Hi All,
Please can you assist? I have 1 x Cisco WLC 2504 & 2 x Cisco WAP AIR-CAP1602I-E-K9 running 7.4.100.60.
All three devices are installed and working correcty within a corporate environment. However, there are a few tweaks that I would like to do, to tidy up the configuration and switch certain elements on or off. For example, my core networking hardware is Huawei and I would like to switch off 'CDP' on the WAP's as the associated error messages are filling up my logging buffer on my switch. So, I https to my WLC, locate the WAP in question, goto 'interfaces' and untick the box for 'CDP state' hit apply, then I get the following error message "controller name is mandatory when controller ip address is configured" and then the tick reappears!
At present I have two WAP's. Both have static IP addresses and both are reachable on the network. The one WAP did allow me to change the name to something meaningful, but the other WAP would not let me and still has the default MAC address as its name. I have the same issue, when I try to change the name on the WAP it says "controller name is mandatory when controller ip address is configured"
I have also tried to CLI directly in to the WAP to make these alterations, but as soon as i launch 'putty' it quits out. I guess this is locked down once the WAP's associate with the WLC.
And around I go.... Someone must have been in this situation, what am i missing? Thanks in advance!Hi Andy,
By default SSH & Telnet is disabled for WLC controlled APs. So you have to enable it first via WLC GUI in order to access the AP via telnet or SSH.
Wireless -> Select your AP -> Advanced -> Tick Telnet/SSH boxes.
If you could not change AP name via WLC GUI (it may be a bug), but as I said earlier try to change it via WLC CLI (not AP CLI itself). SSH to your WLC & then try the following.Old AP name is the one with its mac address.

Information About RADIUS
Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service (RADIUS) is a client/server protocol that provides centralized security for users attempting to gain management access to a network. It serves as a backend database similar to local and TACACS+ and provides authentication and accounting services:
•Authentication—The process of verifying users when they attempt to log into the controller.
Users must enter a valid username and password in order for the controller to authenticate users to the RADIUS server. If multiple databases are configured, you can specify the sequence in which the backend database must be tired.
•Accounting—The process of recording user actions and changes.
Whenever a user successfully executes an action, the RADIUS accounting server logs the changed attributes, the user ID of the person who made the change, the remote host where the user is logged in, the date and time when the command was executed, the authorization level of the user, and a description of the action performed and the values provided. If the RADIUS accounting server becomes unreachable, users are able to continue their sessions uninterrupted.
RADIUS uses User Datagram Protocol (UDP) for its transport. It maintains a database and listens on UDP port 1812 for incoming authentication requests and UDP port 1813 for incoming accounting requests. The controller, which requires access control, acts as the client and requests AAA services from the server. The traffic between the controller and the server is encrypted by an algorithm defined in the protocol and a shared secret key configured on both devices.
You can configure multiple RADIUS accounting and authentication servers.For example, you may want to have one central RADIUS authentication server but several RADIUS accounting servers in different regions. If you configure multiple servers of the same type and the first one fails or becomes unreachable, the controller automatically tries the second one, then the third one if necessary, and so on.

WLC 2504 7.5 Redundancy
Hi all,
Just a little question about high availability in cisco 2504 WLC Ver 7.5.102.0.
Following the cisco documentation for WLC I want to set the HA configuration by going to Controller - Redundancy menu. My issue is that this menu does not exist in my WLC.
Anyone know if this version of ios is HA capable or not ?

When the active controller is unavailable, the standby controller will adopt the licenses from the primary controller. It is expected that the you will be able to get the primary controller back online within 90 days. After 90 days, the you will get a daily reminder to switch back to the primary controller.

I have two WLC 2504 controllers. These controllers are for two different buildings. But they share a VLAN, and network address range.
How can I control the access points to the register selected only at a specific controller.
Example:
AP 1 -> WLC 1
AP 2 -> WLC 2
AP 3 -> WLC 1
Since the buildings also broadcast in different SSID.
The two controllers are in a mobility group.I also ran into an install similar to yours. My client had a flat network and each wlc had licenses for the amount of APs in a particular building. What I did to make sure the APs never join the other wlc, is to use a Mac list. This allowed me to enter the APs base Mac address on the wlc and I enabled under the ap policy to verify authorization using Mac list. You can also do what AA mentioned which is good practice, but you have a chance that APs might join the other wlc. If the other wlc has different configurations, it might cause issues until the ap falls back to its primary.

Iphones, Ipads face problem while shifting between diffrent WLAN on WLC 2504
Dear All,
I just create second SSID for different WLAN on my WLC 2504, all client other then Apple devices are successfully able to connect to new SSID a dnd can swap between two SSIDs but apple device unable to shift to new SSID, if any apple device is not connected to to any of SSID (Fresh connection) then that device is able to connect either of SSID but then unable to swap to other SSID. I enable Fast Transition on WLC as well but no improvement. can any one help me to sort out this issue
