WLC 4400 to 5500 Migration

We have a single 4404 that was setup long before I arrived with Guest networks that timeout and other such tweaks.  Is there a document somewhere that shows a way to migrate the old settings to a new 5508 that we are purchasing?  By the time the 5508 arrives I will have a very small window to setup the unit before a new wing goes live.  I need the new unit as we have reached our limit of licensed AP's on the old 4404.  It seems like everyone keeps talking about an easy way but no one says how to do it.
Sorry, I have never setup one of these units before from scratch so I don't know how long it will take.
Thanks for your input,
Todd

#4400 and 5500 are different platforms. At config level you will see different no. of ports, AP-manager, Passive client,.... Backed up config of 4400 should not be uploaded to 5500 and it is not cisco suggested practice.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/partner/docs/wireless/controller/7.0MR1/configuration/guide/cg_managing_ctrlr.html#wp1063850
Configuring the same manually is the best practice.
If you've more controllers that needs migration then compare the config between 4400 and 5500 that look dissimilar and edit it manually and port it to target 5500 WLC.
Few Tips:-
#4400 doesn't support 7.2 while 5500 does, you can use the 7.2.110.x(MR1) which is recently released for 5508.
#Also, 5508 needs FUS update to avoid critical bug.

  • WLC 4400 and 5500 Fail-over

Can we do the same thing with WCL 4400 and 5500 series for failover? We have 1 existing 4400 WLC and we wanted to purchase another 1 for fail-over as well as backup. But right now, 4400 is EOL already. The only option is to have the 5500 WLC.
So if you do have previous set-up like this, so I would need your inputs.. Otherwise, same as usual, will gonna test to work this out.

You can have both in a primary and backup, but make sure they are on the same code version. I'm assuming that you also have the configuration correct for the two wlc to communicate.
I would put them both on the 7.0.220.0.

  • Preventive maintenance WLC 4400 and 5500?

    Hi good morning,
i asking for help in order to make a preventive maintenance for WLC 4000 and 5500.
the main problem is: can i open the WLC´s and clean all the circuits they have inside? or must i only cleaning out the WLC?
And i would like to know if there are documentation about this topic.
    thanks.

    thanks
I thought of opening the WLC, and use compressed air to remove dust only.
but like you mention would be better not open it.
    Greetings

  • Trouble with WLC 4400 to 5508 Migration

We recently received a 5508 WLC and are in the process of migrating AP's from a 4402. The ios versions on the 5508 is 7.6.100.0 and the 4402 is 7.0.240.0. On our new WLC the 5508 we decided that we wanted to create new SSIDs and new vlans for better management. Is there an easier way to migrate ap's from the 4402 to the 5508? When we move one at a time it's tedious and sometimes we run into certificate issues, I've been doing as much research as possible as I'm helping someone with this move but many findings come to placing the new 5508 in the same mobility group as the 4402 then  move the ap's from the 4402 to the new 5508. The new 5508 is in a mobility group of it's own separate from our 4402's. We have several but are only moving ap's from one 4402 at a time. Is this logical to place the 5508 in the same mobility group and move the ap's to it? If so how do I move the ap's from the 4402 to the 5508? Any suggestions, comments, help would be more then appreciated, thanks!

The fastest way to move APs from one controller to another (without using WCS/NCS/PI) is via CLI.
The command is very simple:  config ap primary-base [5508 name] [AP name] [5508 Management IP address]
All you need is to put this in a spreadsheet and concatenate the AP name and you're set.  Cut-and-paste to the 5508 and wait for the APs to start swinging across.

  • WLC Migration from 4400 to 5500

    dear friends,
i have a existing wireless network setup in my office
existing wlc in 4402 and LAPs are 1130 & 1242 all are working fine
but we are now planning to use new 5500 series controllers for the same access points,
i want to ask that how i can done this job with very minore downtime and users disconnectivity + zero error results??
    thanks

WLC Migration from 4400 to 5500
Hi, it would be better to bring up the 5508 on a different IP address and setup mobility between them and move the APs from the 4400 to the 5508.
The option off loding the configurarion of the 4400 to the 5508 i would not do it since it is 2 different platforms and the configuration file may get corrupted or not work as it should, also the 4400 requires AP manager interface mean while the 5508 not and other differences.

  • Migrate WLC 4400 to WLC 5500

    Hi experts,
I want to Migrate WLC 4400 with WLC 5500, But i don't know how to do this.
Should i create new configuration or use my  WLC 4400 config ?
I want to know about IOS for WLC 5500, should I upgrade my Access Point to connect with new WLC ?
I need a good method to migrate this WLC. So my WLC 5500 can run properly.
    Thankyou for your help.

I have no idea how Ravi's answer is considered "correct" when he didn't address the most important aspect of your thread.
As far as I'm aware, you need to ensure both controllers are running the same firmware or 7.0.250.X.
Take a copy or export the config of the 4400 configuration to your TFTP server.  Edit the file and change the necessary settings.  Go to the 5500 and download this configuration file.  Upgrade the firmware and the bootstrap if necessary.

  • Config migration from WLC 4400 to WLC 4400

    Hi all
My customer has made a trade-in from a WLC 4400 to a WLC 5500. How do I migrate the existing config from the old to the new platform? Can I use the backed-up config of the WLC 4400 (I guess not due to the hardware-parameters which are different)? Or is there a conversion tool?
The WLC 4400 already runs a 6.x release.
    Thanks
    Toni

Thanks for your replies, guys. Just for you to let you know, my local Cisco channel systems engineer confirmed that there's no tool available and that you could try to copy&paste some parameters of the text config, yet there's no guarantee for success for that.
So the only recommended thing to do by now is to build the entire config on the WLC 5500 from scratch.

  • WLC 4400 and WLC 5500

We have a site with a WLC 4400 and we would like to setup a Controller failover. The WLC 4400 is EOS/EOL and the replacement available is WLC 5508. Can someone advice me on how to configure these units in Primary /Secondary mode so that if any of the Controllers fail, the other one can take over?
    Thanks,

    Hi Akil,
    You are most welcome
Yes, you can configure 4400's and 5500's in a redundant configuration, but both should be runningthe
same code version. I believe the latest version that is compatible for both is 7.0.220.0.
this is the last version that supports the 4400 series.
    Here's a note that reflects the support;
    Note
Controllers  do not have to be of the same model to be a member of a mobility group.  Mobility groups can be comprised of any combination of controller  platforms.

  • WLC 4400 - 5500

In the Wireless LAN Controller 4400 series the configuration was not automatically synchronized between the same group of mobility of controllers, the configuration was done manually in each WLC, In the 5500 WLC is the same or the configuration is synchronized between them automatically?

    Hi Ricardo,
Hope all is well my friend
With the 5500 series of WLC's the config's are NOT
synchronized between them automatically. Same as the 4400's.
    Cheers!

  • Diifference between WLC 2100 and 4400 and 5500

    Hi
what is the difference between wire lan controllers(WLAN) 2100 and 4400 and 5500.

    Hello syed
    Cisco 5500 Series Controllers:
The Cisco 5500 Series Wireless LAN Controller is currently available in one model: 5508. The 5508 controller supports up to 250 lightweight access points and 7000 wireless clients (or 5000 wireless clients and 2500 RFID tags when using the client location feature), making it ideal for large enterprises and high-density applications.
    Cisco 4400 Series Controllers:
Because the Cisco 4400 Series Wireless LAN Controller supports 802.11a/b/g and the IEEE 802.11n draft 2.0 standard, organizations can deploy the solution that best meets their individual requirements. Organizations can offer robust coverage with 802.11 a/b/g or deliver greater performance with 5x the throughput and unprecedented reliability using 802.11n and Cisco's Next-Generation Wireless Solutions and Cisco Enterprise Wireless Mesh.
The Cisco 4400 Series Wireless LAN Controller is available in two models. The Cisco 4402 Wireless LAN Controller with two 1 GB Ethernet ports comes in configurations that support 12, 25, and 50 access points. The Cisco 4404 Wireless LAN Controller with four 1 GB Ethernet ports supports 100 access points. The Cisco 4402 controller provides one expansion slot. The Cisco 4404 controller provides two expansion slots that can be used to add VPN termination.
    Cisco 2100 Series Controllers:
These controllers are part of a Payment Card Industry (PCI) certified architecture, and are well suited for retail customers who deploy transactional data applications such as scanners and kiosks. With performance up to 100 Mbps, the Cisco 2100 Series Wireless LAN Controllers also enable small and medium branch offices to deploy collaboration applications such as guest access and mobile voice.

  • ISE WLC 4400 configuration

Up until now, my experience has been with 5500 controllers and ISE.
My customer is using 4400 controller, on 7.0.240 code.
I cannot locate any documents referencing 4400 controller configuration for webauth, named ACLs, posturing, etc...
Does anyone know of any documents, or have experience that can assist with this configuration?

    Michael,
Depending on the version of ISE software you are running, you may be in luck.  The information below is for 1.1.x.  If you are using v 1.2, you may have to tweak a bit.
In this first document, you can see the WLC 4400 is supported and Local Web Auth is supported, with the following caveat:  “Wireless (An ISE Inline Posture node is required if the WLC does not support CoA as discussed in Footnote #4. WLCs with the code specified in this table do support CoA without an ISE Inline Posture node)”
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ise/1.1/compatibility/ise_sdt.html#wp55038
Of course, with an IPN, your posturing  (and CoA) is handled here.
DACLs are also supported on the WLC 4400.
Per User ACLs are covered in the following document:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_configuration_example09186a00808b041e.shtml
I think you will find that if you substitute the ACS pages with the corresponding ISE interface pages, this can be done.
Please feel free to ask any additional or follow-up questions.
Also, please let me know if this fixes your issue.  If it does, please rate this answer and mark your question as Answered.

  • WLC 4400 and multiple authentication servers e.g. RADIUS, ACS

WLC 4400 and multiple authentication servers e.g. RADIUS, ACS
Can the WCL 4400 be set up to use multiple RADIUS servers? The user accounts for accessing wireless would use a RADIUS server. The administrative accounts for the WLC would reside on an ACS server.

Yes, that is correct. You can set acs to use both radius and tacacs.
For this you need to add WLC twice in acs-->network configuration. But you need to keep host name different.
    eg 1) Host name WLC --->IP x.x.x.x -->Auth using -->radius
    2) Host name WLC1--->IP x.x.x.x --->Auth using -->Tacacs.
You need to set up tacacs commands on WLC along with radius commands.

  • WLC 4400 and IDS attacks

    Hi,
I have a WLC 4400 and a WCS 5.2. I'm receiving alarm about flood atacks and desauthentication attacks from a client. These alarms are detected by the IDS system. I'd like to know if there are any way to block this client.
    Thanks a lot.

    Thanks Sschmidt,
I saw this solution. The problem it's that i must create an entry by any client. If there are any client that capture the wpa key and after chage his mac i couldn't block them. Is that correct? I don't know how easily it's capture authenticantion packets with a WLC.
    Thanks
