WLC 4402-12-K9 upgrade to 25 access points

Hi everyone,
my customer has an AIR-WLC4402-12-K9 using 12 access point with it, and they would like to increase the number of APs in use. Is there an upgrade option for 25? I couldn't find anything, but I suppose the hardware is the same, it's the software that differs.
If not, can they buy another AIR-WLC4402-12-K9 and connect it to the existing one? Can the software handle to controllers in the same wireless system?
Thanks in advane for all the input!
Peter

Peter,
Sadly the 44xx units are based on AP management - not a software. You could have another AIR-WLC4402-12-K9 and place the secondary in the same mobility group for seemless wireless networking....however if a WLC fails - you have lost the extra 12 AP capacity!
It would probably make sense to by a AIR-WLC4402-25-K9 or even a AIR-WLC4402-50-K9 for future expansion!
HTH.

  • WLC upgrade license and access point

    Hi everyone,
I need suggestion regarding wlc 5508  upgrade license. Right now i have 150 license for access points. There will be upgrade around 300 access points. So we are planning to buy new license until the maximum capacity of 5508 (500 licenses).
Our management ip address is 192.168.50.x/24 . so all the access point are pointed to this management ip address (in the same subnet)
    First question,
Because there will be an upgrade to around 450 access point. The current management ip address will not be enough.
Please, give me the  best suggestion ?
Should i create another management ip address ? or I need to make a bigger subnet using the current management ip address ?
if i create a bigger ip address, the current access points must be set again yups ?
    Second question
There will be a new link connected to the wlc, and i want to create new user subnets.
what is the best practices for this matter ?
if there are better suggestion, please let me know, i am still learning about wireless
    I have attached the topology.
    Thank you
    Fanie

For an example, a 5508 can support up to 500 AP's, and the AP's can be in one large subnet or be in many different subnets and or even different locations. As long as the ap knows how to discover the WLC or the ap already had joined the WLC, then the AP's don't have to be on the same subnet as the WLC. The easiest way to have AP's join is to stage them on the same subnet as the WLC management and then move them to a different subnet. I would probably have no more than 100 AP's per subnet, but that's me. Stage some AP's on the management subnet that the WLC is on and then when the AP's join and complete downloading code, change the switch port Vlan and shut and no shut the port. The ap will come back up and join the WLC.

  • Cisco WLC 2125 and AIR-LAP1252AG-A-K9 access points

We are running into a little issue here and looking for some help. We have the Controller configured and it appears to be working properly the issue we are running into is that we can only get the above mentioned access points to only join the controller if they are plugged directly into the controller. I would assume that we should be able to plug these access points into any of our switches and they should be able to join the controller correct? Obviously there has to be a configuration issue somewhere and am hoping someone can point us in the right direction.

  • Upgrading controllers and access points through NCS

I am currently trying to upgrade all of my controllers and access points to the newest version.  I have downloaded the file and loaded it on the ftp server running on the Cisco NCS server.  I tried to go to configure>controllers and Download Software(ftp) and go.  I setup the schedule and it says failure.  The details say %Error:Code file transfer failed - Connection Timeout.  Sorry if this is a basic thing that I am missing.  I have tried using an internal ftp server as well and it errors out also.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is setup with NCS Prime running 4 WiSM blades and 3 WiSM 2 blades in 6509 chassis.  I am going in through NCS and doing configure controllers and download software(ftp) from the select a command dropdown.  When I setup it up this way I have to select schedule unless I want it to automatically download and reboot the controllers, which I was trying to avoid so that I could do it during the day.  It just keeps timing out on the download portion.

  • Upgrading Older 340 Access Points

I have 7 AP in my organization, one is a Aironet 4800, one is a Cisco 350, and the rest are Cisco 340s. I'm a bit puzzled because the outside of each 340 is the same, basically. But the OS is different, 3 of them show as Aironet BR500E V8.24 and the other two show as Cisco AP340 11.23T. I'm getting both of these numbers from the top left of the browser when I access them from IP address. I'm imaging the BR500E is the older Aironet OS where as the AP340 is the new Cisco one. Well my question is this, can I change the BR500Es to be the same as the Cisco AP340s through a firmware upgrade or some other means? I'm wanting to setup Cisco ACS product so I can use LEAP and Dynamic WEP. But I don't think these BR500Es will work with Cisco LEAP, or will it??
    Thanks

Unfortunately you do not have 7 AP's. The ones that have BR500E are actual wireless bridges. These bridges are going to have the basic same shape as the AP's but they are a little bit bigger in size. If you look on top of these devices you should see the label stating that it is a bridge and if you flip the device over, you should see the tag with the serial number and part number under it that says AIR-BR340, AIR-BR341, or AIR-BR342There is no way to upgrade them to an Access Point or to the 11.23T code. These bridges do not do Leap.

  • Upgrading to N access points

Currently we have 2 WISMs that handle approximately 100 AP's. We are looking to replace our 1242 AP's with the new N 1142's. I was wondering how many clients these 1142's can support compared to the 1242's? Most of our company laptops do not have N cards in them yet so besides being better prepared for the future, what benefits can we expect?

I disagree with leolaohoo- if bandwidth demands per user remain constant, then more bandwidth means more users. For example, if your users need 2 mbps apiece then you can support a lot fewer of them per AP on 802.11g (54mbps datarate ~= 25 mbps IP throughput) but a lot more on 802.11n (300 mbps datarate ~= 200 mbps IP throughput).
Mind you, it's not a purely linear division... as you get more users per AP, you get more contention and protocol overhead, so each successive user consumes more and more of the available bandwidth. And, when you have more bandwidth available, each user will tend to consume more bandwidth: people may start streaming video or downloading ISOs from Pirate Bay where they would not do so before.
But that doesn't mean that there's no improvement. It just means that the improvement isn't as much as the nominal datarate changes would indicate.
There's also the ClientLink technology to consider. As of the 6.0 code. 802.11n APs will provide a much better connection to existing a/g clients than an a/g access point can, by using beamforming technology to improve RSSI for distant clients. See link here:

  • WLC 4402 4.x Upgrade to 7.x

    Hi!
I'm planning to upgrade my very first WLC, its a 4402 running 4.2.61.0. I plan to upgrade to 7.0.240.0 - Could someone with more experience in the subject please clarify I have everything right ?
From the installation notes I believe I require a interim upgrade to 4.2.209.0 before I install 7.0.240.0?
I'm currently going to upgrade to the interim release then go to 7.x at a later date because I don't want to make too many changes at once, is this actually sound advice or am I kidding myself? Should I just do both upgrades in the same maintenance window?
I have allowed myself 1 hour to do the upgrade(s), will this be long enough? I have 29 APs connected.
When going to 7.x, I must install the system image, reboot, then install the -ES image and reboot again?
Other than that I'd appreciate any other tips!
    Thanks,
    William

Keep in mind when you load the FUS. It looks like its not doing anything for like 30 minutes .. DONT REBOOT THE WLC

  • Create a point to point link with a wlc 4402

    Hi to all,
i have a wlc 4402 and i need to configure a point to point link with two air-lap1310g-e-k9, i have found on cisco.com this link:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6366/products_configuration_example09186a00808e9c1b.shtml#zero
but on the wlc configuration page i cannot found some configuration step.
Someone have configured this type of behaviour or can give me some hints?!
How can i configure on the wlc the parameter about the bridges configuration?! Or i must configure the bridges overriding the global configuration?!
    Thanks and best regards,
    Carlo Sagratella.

The correct thing to do would be to downgrade the 1310's to autonomous (or 1242's) and set up a root bridge and non-root bridge.
Alternately however, if you REALLY wanted one of the points to be LWAPP, in theory you could always make one of the Access Points Autonomous and join it as a workgroup bridge to the LWAPP AP. However, there really is no reason to do that since it would be cleaner to convert both to autonomous.

  • Upgrading Access Point

Can anyone help me to upgrade the autonomous access point to light weight mode?
    AP : Cisco 1120
Should i give controller credentials ?
I have tried with Upgrade Tool and it is not happening,Also i am not getting any error.
Can anyone help me quickly ?
    Regards,
    Senthil

    Hi,
Yes you should give controller credentials for time synchronization. Does your 1120 have a MIC or SSC? You might need to add the certificate to the system if it is old enough to have SSC.
If it is in the same subnet as the controller, you might want to try to use a tftp server and try the archive download command from the AP.
Which version of the upgrade tool do you use?
What do you see on the AP console?

  • Upgrading from WLC 4402-50 to WLC 5508-250

I am planning to upgrade my WLC 4402-50 (HA) to WLC 5508-250 (HA). I also have some really old 1020 Access points that I will be replacing with 1142's. Once I have completed the upgrade to the 5508s, I will repurpose the 4402's as Mobile Anchor controllers to support Guest Wireless.
Does anyone have any actual experience with this sort of upgrade? Any practical suggestions or ideas??

  • 4402 Upgrade License for Additional Access Points

Can you apply the L-LIC-WPLUS-25 to a 4402 to allow it more access points? Or are the 4402 Models all locked into their designated access point license?
    Thanks,
    -Con

    Hi Con,
    Sadly not :(
The number of AP support is "hard coded" on the WLC model and is not upgradable until the 5500 series.

  • Problem to register upgraded AP 1242 to WLC 4402

    Hi,
I am running a small Cisco WLAN with about 20 APs (all 1242) that are managed by two WLC 4402 (running v4.0.155.0).
WLCs are in Mobility group, serveral WLANs/VLANs are configured (including 802.1x, guest access with WebAuthentication etc.). All APs are configured for the same WLC as primary and the other as secondary. Everthing was working fine until I tried to upgrade another AP from IOS to LWAPP using the Cisco Upgrade tool.
After the AP was flashed and rebooted it started to discover a WLC but fails. The console messages look like this:
    *Mar 1 00:00:05.962: %CDP_PD-4-POWER_OK: Full power - AC_ADAPTOR inline power source

*Mar 1 00:00:54.398: %LWAPP-5-CHANGED: LWAPP changed state to DOWN
The switchport of the AP is configured for the same VLAN as the management and ap-management interface of the controller (not native VLAN), the primary controller is set to master controller mode and I see no other error messages (e. g. on the WLC).
Does anyone know how to fix this problem?
(even adding a "CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER" host in the DNS does not help!!!)
