WLC 5508 - Client Intermittent Drop Out

We have an intermittent issue where clients seeem to drop their connectivity intermittently and I wondered if anyone else have seen this.
When the client drops out it is associated to the AP at good signal strength -45 -> -49 dbm. All our clients are running Win7. Once the issue occurs a yellow exclamation mark appear across the system tray wireless icon and a message appears in the "Network and Sharing Centre" that either says “no internet connection” or “DNS server not responding". The association with the AP appears to be intact. This seems to be confirmed as the client can ping its default gateway and can be pinged from another device but no connectivity above layer 3 appear to be working. Really the best way to describe it is that all communication above layer 3 stops. This behaviour is extremely intermittent.
The wireless clients are a small cross section of HP business laptops. HP8460p, HP6930p and a few other models. The laptops are all running the latest wireless drivers available (that was the first thing we tried). We have two 5508 wireless controllers operating 60 APs between them. Most of the APs in the area where we are seeing the issue are AIR-LAP1242 we do run the AIR-CAP3502 also but not in this area. We only have 2.4GHz enabled but with the extended data rates (to 130mbps). We have multiple WLANs but the one that seems to be causing the issue is the only one running WPA2.
The only way to restore full connectivity to the client is to hard reset the wireless adapter.
We have run debugs on the client and ran a sniffer trace between the controller and the authentication server but so far this has not turned up anything. The wireless controller is showing the client still associated but a link test from the controller to the client failed.
Any ideas would be welcome. I can provide further information if required.

What EAP type do you have deployed, as I guess you are using 802.1X?
Does this problem occur during client roaming?
Is the problem specific to only HP devices or are other laptop vendors in the mix?
I would suggest that you perform a packet capture on one of the wireless clients when the problem happens. You could use wireshark. Perform the following tests during the capture:
1. Ping a remote device on a different subnet.
2. Perform a layer 4 and above activity such as opening a web page or FTP.
In the interim, you could try the following:
1. Disable Aironet IE on the WLAN SSID Advanced tab
2. Increase the packet max-retries timeout value on the dot11radio interface.

                      We are starting to experience some dropped connections while utilizing a 5508 WLC (SW: 7.4.100.0) with 2602e LAP's.  The connections seem to drop for 1-2 seconds and then reconnect on their own.  Machines and cards are varied.  Any thoughts?

    Just check these features
    The User Idle Timeout: When a user is idle without any communication with the LAP for the amount of time set as User Idle Timeout, the client is deauthenticated by the WLC. The client has to reauthenticate and       reassociate to the WLC. It is used in situations where a client can drop out from its associated LAP without notifying the LAP.
    The Session Timeout is the maximum time for a client session with the WLC. After this time, WLC de-authenticates the client, and the client goes through the whole authentication (re-authentication) process again.
    This parameter can be accessed from the WLANs > Edit menu.

    Let me see if I can suggest a strategy.
    I have talked with my ISP and he said that I am not the only one with an Airport Extreme with the same issue. He said to try to write the DNS direclty, rather than using the Auto settings - still nothing works.
    What modem do you have and what sort of broadband?
    What mode is the AE in.. router or bridge?
    I have an Airport Express from 2010. Since about a month and definetly since yesterday, I cannot connect any device via Wifi to it although LAN connection works correctly.
    Is this express or extreme.. the rest of the post you refer to extreme.
    What is the actual model number of the AE? A1xxx from the base or the part number MCxxx from the box.
    If the AE is bridge.. I want you to try a different method.. put it in router mode.. don't worry about double NAT but ensure the IP range of the modem /router is different to the AE.. so if one is 192.168.x.x then the AE on default at 10.x.x.x is fine.. if the main router is 10.x then move the AE to 192.168.x.x
    Make sure the guest wireless is off.
    Using a 5.6 utility on your 10.6.8 OS mini go to the log and see if the wireless is registering..
    You should see lists of wireless connection like..
    Post as many screenshots of the setup as you can.. it helps loads.
    IPv6 is starting to become a pain.. try it off and try local link and try auto.. in the computer.

  • WLC 5508 - Clients disconnecting

    I am running WLC 5508 7.2.111.3 with some 2602i AP.
    Last week one user reported his new macbook pro 2013 was encountering connectivity issues.His older macbook pro 2009 was working perfectly.
    The user is sitting in the middle of 2nd floor having equal distance from second's floor access points.
    The problem is that his Macbook pro 2013 was persistently trying to associate with 3rd's floor Access Points. Whatever i tried to do (deauthenticate user,rebooting 2nd & 3rd floor APs) the connection was persistent to 3rd floor Access Point. Even when i tried to install an Access Point in the user's office his Macbook Pro 2013 refused (!!!) to leave 3rd's floor Access Points.However his Macbook pro 2009 was always connected to the nearest Access Point (either to 2nd floor Access Points or to the newly installed access point in his office).
    This week i had two visitors in 4th floor reporting that their Laptops (Sony Vaio) were doing very slow with the wireless.
    When i tried to troubleshoot i found in the controller that their laptops were associating with 4th floor Access Points and after a minute they were disconnected and trying to associate to Ground Floor (!) Access Points. Of course they couldn't establish a connection and then associated again with 4th floor access points and after a while disconnected and trying to associate to Ground Floor Access Points
    I tried to debug client with Sony Vaio and saw in the controller the following message

    have you tried with open authentication ( no security ) ? Check if client is able to associate then

  • Repeated wlc 5508 client web authentication

    I'm trying to troubleshoot a situation where many of our guest wireless users are repeatedly being prompted to reauthenticate via the web interface.  the session timeout is set to 4 hours, however, many times a client is presented with a web authentication screen right in the middle of browsing at random times.
    I do have several system log entries, but cannot find the specific entries in the Error code reference for the WLC.  For example, I don't find anything on %AAA-3-VALIDATE_GUEST_SESSION_FAILED: file_db.c:4022 Guest user session validation failed for guest1. Index provided is out of range..
    I'm running a WLC 5508 with 7.0.98.0 and have read through all of the release notes, error code references, etc., and don't see anything regarding this issue.
    The WCS screenshot shows a good example of how often this occurs!  Is the client actually re-associating with the AP (which in turn would require a web reauth)?  Not sure if I'm barking up the wrong tree - focusing on web auth when I may actually need to be focusing on AP association...
    I do have a TAC case opened up, but was wondering if anyone has experienced this before?

    I did several things and at least one of them seemed to resolve the issue:
    These notes are directly from my TAC case and I will try to provide a little more information [in brackets].
    1.       Upgrade WLC to 7.0.98.218 [self explanatory]
    2.       Upgrade WCS to 7.0.172.0 [current version, as of this note]
    3.       Increase DHCP scope time on ASA from default (30 minutes) to 4
    days [DHCP running external from the WLC]
    4.       Remove TKIP from the WLAN - only allow AES [had both configured but tech advised to only use AES]
    5.       Increased session timeout from 14400 seconds to 64800 seconds
    (4 hours to 18 hours) [don't think this helped resolve the issue, but it certainly was more convenient for our longer-term guests]
    I think that the TKIP and/or DHCP setting was integral as part of the resolution.  I upgraded the WLC because the version that I was running didn't have the web-auth debug option, so I'm not sure that that actually contributed to the resolution.

  • Wireless mouse intermittently drops out/stops working

    I have just bought a Mac Mini. I'm not a fan of Apple keyboards or mice, so I've bought a third party keyboard and I'm using a mouse that I already had (Microsoft Wireless Mouse 1000). Whilst it works fine with my Macbook Pro and PC, with the mini I get drop outs in the form of jerky movement and occassionally stopping long enough to see it just isn't moving. The mini works fine with a wired mouse.
    My gut feeling from playing around with the different mice and computers is that it is actually the aluminium case shielding the signal from the mouse (as both are on the desktop and the mini sits at the back of the desk with the USB ports on the back and a great chunk of aluminium therefore in front of it.
    I have a USB hub built in to the monitor, but that seems to have the same problem - the USB ports are behind the panel and associated electronics. Sadly, my keyboard (Ducky Zero DK2108) doesn't have a hub built in, so I can't connect the dongle to that either.
    I'm just surprised I haven't seen (after a lot of googling) other complaints about the same. I may have to reluctantly buy a Bluetooth mouse as the BT antenna is of course outside of the Alu case. An alternative may be to use a small USB hub that can be positioned with line-of-sight to the mouse. It seems absurd I would have to do either of those things.
    Can anyone else comment on their experiences?

  • Macbook pro speakers intermittent drop-out

    OK, my Macbook Pro 13.3" is less than 3 months old, and the speakers (subwoofer) just drops out occasionally, making it virtually impossible to hear sound. Is this a "known fault" in the hardware -- how to proceed and get this fixed? It's a new Mac...do I have get the shop to take a look, or is there a readier solution? Thanks for any advice.

    I've had far too many problems with the newer revisions (>= 5.0) of the Linksys WRT54xx wireless routers, especially dropped connections. A shame, because they used to be extremely reliable. I replaced my WRT54G rev 6 with a D-Link DIR-625 and my connections are much more reliable and stable, both on my Windows and mac machines.

  • Time Capsule wireless intermittent drop outs to PC and iPhone

    I have a Time Capsule that we use in our home as a wireless router and back-up. It is connected to a Comcast cable modem only. It has worked well, but about a couple months ago we started to have issues. Our iMac sees the Time Capsule through the wireless fine and has no connectivity issues. However, my PC laptop, that used to connect wirelessly, now has issues keeping a connection and so does my iPhone. The two devices will see the network and connect, but the connection drops out after a minute or so, then reconnects, and the cycle continues. I am not sure what to do to fix this and it makes me even more confused since our iMac has no issues with the wireless connection. Has anyone experienced this issue? Thanks!

    All that is Ok, and TIvo says I am hooked up correctly. THey say this is the problem, they can look at the box to see the error #.

  • Wrt54g intermittent drop outs

    I bought a new wrt54g wireless router so that my daughter could get access with her new laptop, but haven't got that far yet..... I have a wireless ISP with a static IP address, and configured the router with the right IP address, subnet, etc, and configured the computer for DHCP. I have my computer plugged into one of the 4 ports and the unit works fine for a while. After some varying period of time, sometimes 15 minutes, sometimes a couple of hours, Windows 7 tells me that I have no internet access., and it is right. I sometimes can solve the problem with a reboot, but can more often solve the problem with a modem reboot. When I unplug the router and go direct to the wire, the problem goes away and stays away. Could there be some interaction with the router and the ISP considering that the ISP is wireless? The ISP tech support says it is a router problem and since I am going hardwired, I know it is not an interference problem. Any suggestions?

    Try to reduce the MTU to 1300 on the router and check...if that does not work then,try to upgrade the router's firmware.You can download the firmware from www.linksys.com/downloads and save it on the desktop.On the linksys setup page,click on Admnistration tab to upgrade the firmware. 

  • WLC 5508, SW 6.0.199.4, 1142 AP: Clients getting dropped intermittently

    We have deployed a WLC 5508 w/ SW version 6.0.199.4, 1142 AP's & open authentication w/ MAC filtering. Clients are randomly getting dropped with "Limited Access" shown in Win 7. In this state, the client machine is unable to ping the gateway and sometimes lose their DHCP assigned IP as well. A manual disconnect/re-connect to the SSID is required everytime.

  • Optical audio drops out intermittently

    Hi
    Weird problem has been occurring for the past couple of weeks. Optical audio drops out intermittently, for about 1.5 seconds. Playback isn't affected. Analogue audio is fine. MBP is connected to a Bose V20 sound system.
    Any thoughts?

  • WLC 5508 , AP client dhcp address different from WLAN interface VLAN subnet?

    Hope the title makes sense, here's my situation: I have multiple businesses on 1 WLC 5508, there's a LAG to my core switch with seperate interfaces for each, broken up by vlans.
    My question is: if i have a WLAN setup to use interface "Company A" which is vlan 10 with an ip of 10.0.1.5 which then points to 10.0.1.10 for dhcp.
    Can the WLAN client connecting to the Company A WLAN use an IP in a different IP range?(192.168.1.10?) can the wlc route? from the perspective of the DHCP server where doers the request come from? (10.0.1.5?)
    Can the DHCP server 10.0.10.10 on vlan 10 respond back with and ip on a different subnet to assign to the client to use and still be fully fonctioning? would the default gateway for the client need to be 10.0.1.5?  So the clients ip would be 192.168.1.10 /24 with a gateway of 10.0.1.5 (ip adress fo vlan10 interface on WLC) And if multiple clients on the same subnet wanted to talk to each other woudl the WLC know how to route them to each other without passing through the default gateway?
    Sorry if this is confusing I'm having a bit of a hard time explaining it in works, i can try and draw somethign up if it makes more sense.

    I think if you want these clients to stick to a WLAN configured on a VLAN that has a different IP addressing you could configure your VLAN with the normal IP addressing then add on the SVI the 2nd IP_Class_default_gateway.
    E.G.
    Vlan 10
    interface vlan 10
    ip address 10.0.10.1 255.255.255.0
    ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0 secondary
    Clients that receive IP address from 192.168.1.0/24 network will be able to reach 192.168.1.1 and all traffic will pass right.

  • WLC 5508 disable wlan client still connected

    I have one wlc 5508 running on latest IOS 7.116, there is one wlan abc which i have disable status and disable broadcast, but randomly still i can see from wlc dashboard there is one client connected to this wlan abc. The moment i check on the client details, there is no client connected to that wlan and when return to dashboard, no more client connected to that wlan abc. This happened in randomly, it is bug or something else?

    I would guess that the client entry also indicates "probing" as status. It means that the client is not connected. It is actually probing, so it"s looking for that SSID that it probably associated to in the past (so it remembers about it)

    Just wondering if any one can help.  We had Verizon DSL on our home phone line for six years in Worcester MA.  The first five years we had little to problems.  The last 10 months we’ve have frequent (nearly every day drop out and period where the DSL line can’t connect for minutes to sometimes hours).
    We’ve had seven different technicians visit us for a total of thirteen visits.  They’ve replaced the line coming into our house multiple times and isolated our home phone lines from the DSL feed but this hasn’t helped. Verizon tech support can’t seem to get back to me with a detailed plan of what they are going to do next and few representatives return my phone calls.
    We’ve also tried at least five router and modems and it hadn’t helped.  They recently changed the DSL card(?) in the local office (~7000 ft away) and said they switched us to ADS2.
    We’re still seeing internet drops and we’re at our wit’s end.
    Any ideas?

    Well, we're getting pretty fed up.  Here's the letter that we are sending out for a Verizon Presidential Appeal...

    Dear Sirs,
    We are writing to lodge a formal complaint about our Verizon DSL service, and the extremely
    poor treatment we have received while trying to resolve this (still unresolved) problem. We have had
    intermittent internet outages for the last 12 months. This followed five years of normal DSL service at
    the same address. Our problems worsened this spring; our internet is out a few minutes to several
    hours a day, most days a week. Our next door neighbors have the same problem with their Verizon
    DSL service, though they do not use the internet very often so are less affected than we are. We rely
    on consistent internet service for our jobs.
    We have had 13 technician visits to our home from a total of seven different technicians. On
    multiple occasions, we have also been stood up for scheduled technician visits, including days in
    which we took off work to be home. Two of these times in which we were stood up were not visits that
    Verizon initiated, where we were told we needed to be home. Additionally, we have received
    several “auto-calls” informing us that our problem is fixed and our work tickets have been closed. This
    is extremely upsetting to us, as our problem has never been fixed as we have explained many times.
    Several technicians have spoke confidently (and condescendingly) that their work would fix our
    problem; these are generally the technicians we never saw again.
    It is clear from our several calls each month to Verizon that persons and departments within
    the company do not communicate with one another. Time and time again, we have been shuffled from
    person to person, and now believe that no one wants to expend the effort to deal with our problems.
    For example, multiple employees have failed to call us back when they said they would. We have
    asked several times for a team of creative thinkers (with the authority to act) to brainstorm some sort
    of solution and let us know what Verizon was doing to solve our problem. This has not happened. We
    have made extensive notes about our service interruptions and our correspondence with Verizon over
    the last several months; these are included in this packet. We also have multiple videos across several
    months showing that DSL signal is not available.
    We believe that a new line needs to be put in from the local hub to our house, a distance of
    only a few blocks. (See notes on reverse of page.) At this point, we have no faith that Verizon is
    willing to fix this problem and restore service to us. This is truly a shameful way to do business.
    If Verizon is unwilling to restore our DSL service to acceptable levels, we would like Verizon to
    Notes: This is what Verizon has told us they have done:
    1. Isolated our phone line from DSL.
    2. Replaced the line from our street to our home.
    3. Switched the F2.
    4. Put us on an A-DSL2 card at the local hub.
    We have tried seven DSL modems and six routers without success. The problem is not within
    our house; that is clear. We believe a new F1 line is needed. We were even told by a company
    representative on the phone “well, DSL is on copper wire…” - basically from our view, an admission
    that copper wire can go bad, and that this may be the cause of our problems. We have asked for a
    new F1 line to be installed several times and been brushed off each time.

  • After no problem for 2 yrs, signal dropping out intermittently.

    The signal is dropping out unexpectly, often this is when there is more than one device is using the wi-fi. No updates are pending on the AE or our devices. We have switched out our modem midway over the time we've been having the problem. Our ADSL provider claims the problems aren't on their end.
    Is this sort of problem common when an Airport Express is going bad? The AE has not been relocated.
    Do Airport Expresses just quit working or can there be intermittent problems leading up to its final demise?

    We've had our AE "quit" randomly for a couple of years. I thought ot was Comcast & would reset the modem. I've found that the unit is warm to the touch. What I now do is to unplug the AE for a couple of minutes. This seems to do the trick. I guess I'm resetting it without messing with passwords, etc.
