WLC 5508 firmware
Is there anywhere that shows the main differences / feature sets between the 7.2, 7.3 and 7.4 firmware? Are there any general recommendations?
TIA
Second Scott.

If you look at each release note, there is a section called "What's New in this release" that can provide a good brief overview of any additional features/changes with the specific release.

Hi All,
WLC 5508 - current firmware 7.0.116.0 is running on it. we need add couple of 2700 series AP. From the release notes i got know 2700 series supported on the 7.6.120.x and later.
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/access_point/2700/quick/guide/ap2700getstart.html
- whereas 7.6.120.x is the latest one in the train. can we have this firmware on the controller as its latest??
- from the release notes - we can have a direct upgrade to 7.6.120.0., upgrading from 7.0.x.x to 7.6.120.x missing so many version in between. any potential problems i may get ??
- FUS (Field upgrade software is necessary) which version and how it can be installed ??
Regards,
ChannaHi Channa,
Go for the 7.6.130.0 (7.6MR3) when it is available to public. To be released within next couple of weeks. If you need to do this before 7.6MR3 comes then you can get pre-release of that code via TAC. Refer below for that.
https://supportforums.cisco.com/document/12245186/76mr3-beta-availability
Yes, you have to upgrade your FUS, It is recommended to go for v 1.9.0.0. Below will give you the upgrade procedure. Better to do it via CLI & allocate 30-45min downtime for this upgrade
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/fus_rn_OL-31390-01.html
Feature wise there are lots of feature available in 7.6.x compare to 7.0.x. But I do not expect any problem going from 7.0.x to 7.6.x as long as you upgrade your FUS first.
Also read these compatibility matrix to see all your AP models are supporting by this 7.6.x code & any other PI or MSE compatibility if you have those.

Hi Experts ,
I am having weird issue with 5508 controller which is having firmware 7.2.110.0 . This controller is restarting automatically
Since this issue was occuring since long time with earlier version , I have upgraded to 7.2.110.0 , however still no luck ....
I do not have any logs related to controller crash info.Hey Scott,
I'm about to upgrade a 5508 controller from 7.0.220.0 to 7.4.110.0 , and was just prepping myself on upgrading the FUS as it will be the first time. Latest for 5508 is 1.7 and I noticed for 2504 its 1.8.
I was just curious where you saw that its mandatory to upgrade the FUS ? I can't seem to locate any actual documentation specifying anything about upgrading the FUS when going from one version to another etc. I know one of my clients has a 5508 on 7.4 with the old FUS (see below).
Bootloader Version............................... 1.0.1Field Recovery Image Version..................... 6.0.182.0
Firmware Version................................. FPGA 1.3, Env 1.6, USB console 1.27
Build Type....................................... DATA + WPS
Looking forward to your reply

Incompatibility issue - WLC 5508 and ACS 5.4
Hi,
This is my scenario:
Cisco WLC 5508 firmware 7.4.110.20 and ACS 5.4, two WLAN eap/tls, many client can't connect to WLAN and on ACS i receive the following error:
Authentication failed : 11051 RADIUS packet contains invalid state attribute
workaround:
1 -Check the network device or AAA Client for hardware problems.
2-known RADIUS compatibility issues.
3-Check the network that connects the device to ACS for hardware problems
there are some incompatibility issue between WLC and ACS ? the compatibility matrix document for wireless imposes the 7.5 firmware for WLC.
What do you think is possibile ?Are there any other errors shown in the details of the failed authentication?
We may need to look at service logs in debug mode, opening a TAC case would be the best way to go about this.

Hi,
Two WLC 5508 running identical code version. One is 50 license Primary, the second is HA. Identical config on both. HA WLC can upload its config to the TFTP or FTP server but Primary cannot. The operation fails for both CLI and GUI and for different protocols i.e. TFTP, FTP.

Not upgrading to 7.4.121.0 because of bug CSCuo63103. Have not restarted the controller yet.
Any one else had this issue ? Is there a workaround ?
Thanks,
Rick. Thanks Stephen, In my deployments of 7.4.110.0 version I have not seen this issue so may be controller reboot will fix it (we do have HA to minimize the impact). I will keep the thread updated with findings and may request TAC for the special release 7.4.121.0 if the still not happy with 7.4.110.0

WLC 5508 * 2 & Mobility Group
What I am trying to configure is Mobility Groups.
My understanding is that this will allow AP to successfully register and fail over over seamlessly if any of the WLC had to fail ?
It could be I am confusing two things into one :( & I am totally confused and not understanding the benefits of mobility group mentioned above.
Also when a AP starts up and registers with the WLC ......I click on a registered AP > High Availability ( Primary / Sec / Tertiary ) all fields are blank...
Initially I also thought that once my SSO is all setup and working than those options "AP > High Availability" will get populated automatically but clearly not unless something is not working.
My current config is as follows:-
WLC 5508 * 2
WLC 1 - Primary
WLC 2 - HA SKU (Secondary )
Redundancy = SSO (Both AP and Client SSO)

TATA,
Mobility and mobility groups are used for the wireless users roaming. What we know that a wireless users can roam between different APs within the same WLC, but when the SSID is used within multiple WLCs, and the client wanted to roam to an AP joined to another WLC, you would need to configure WLC mobility to maintain seamless roaming. For more info:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/8-0/configuration-guide/b_cg80/b_cg80_chapter_010001101.html
Now, I understand that your purpose is to have high availability for your APs. No this is done traditionally from the AP page, under HA tab, where you configure the WLCs names and IPs there. This can be done manually on each AP (you can use CLI to make it easier) or you can push a configuration template using a management server (WCS/NCS/CPI).
Configuring HA on the AP:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/8-0/configuration-guide/b_cg80/b_cg80_chapter_01110000.html
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/controller/8-0/configuration-guide/b_cg80/b_cg80_chapter_01110001.html
Using CPI to push AP configuration templates:
http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/wireless/prime_infrastructure/2-0/configuration/guide/pi_20_cg/temp.html
Now mobility may play a role in this, as if you have already configured mobility for your WLCs, then you won't need to configure a "name" for the WLCs when you add them under the HA tab in AP configuration page. That's it.

Thanks in Advanced,
Ahmed,Your WLC is running a 7.0.235.3. This firmware is suitable for your 1300 but you need at least 7.2.X to run 3600.
As I've mentioned in your other thread, you can get a refurbished 4402/4404 cheap from Cisco Refurbished. You can use the 4400 to run your 1310 and the 5508 to run the newer APs. -
AIR-CAP1602i cannot join a WLC 5508 controller
Hello,
I'm managing a large number of access points on a Cisco wlc 5508 controller.
We've recently purchased a bunch of new AIR-CAP1602I-E-K9.
note that we already have AIR-CAP1602I-E-K9 and other models in production.
These A.P are not able to join the controller for some reason, I've tried a lot of different things but I am now at a loss.
I have checked the regulatory domain, upgraded the FUS, manually upgraded the software version of the LAP to match the version on the other A.P.
I even downgraded/upgraded the WLC code (version 7.4.x and 8.0)
I use the dhcp option 43 to to send the controller IP.
Here are the info that can help:
errors:

WLC 5508 Internal DHCP server issues
Hi,
I am hoping to get your feedback around the dhcp issues I am facing with Two Centrally Switched Wireless LANs. I have tried to explain the setup and the problems below and would appreciate it if anyone can suggest a solution for the problems I am facing:
The setup is as follows:
- I have a WLC 5508 which has been configured with 4 SSIDs, out of which 2 are using Central Authentication and Switching.
- I have an LWAP connected to the WLC in HREAP mode.
- WLC is configured as the DHCP server for clients connecting to the SSID 'Guest'. For the rest, I am using external dhcp server.
- Only one scope for Guest Interface is setup on the WLC.
Problems:
1. As far as I know, for WLC to act as internal dhcp server, it is mandatory to have the proxy enabled, but the Clients connecting to SSID 'Internet' are
unable to get an ip address from the external dhcp server, if dhcp proxy is enabled on the WLC. If i disable the proxy, it all works fine.
2. DHCP does not release the ip addresses assigned to clients even after they are logged out.
3. If a machine which was earlier connected to 'Guest' SSID connects to the 'Internet' SSID, it requests the same ip it was assigned by the WLC which it was assigned under 'Guest', but gets tagged with the Vlan configured on the management interface.

I have a similar issue where Wireless clients are not receiving automatic addressing from an internal DHCP server. I have multiple interfaces configured on the WLC which are connected to separate VLANS. The manually specified DHCP primary server entry is the same on all interfaces. Some clients are able to authenticate and receive automatic IP configuration but some clients are failing the address assignment process. I have checked connectivity between the WLC and DHCP server, this is confirmed as working. When I carry out a "debug dhcp packet enable", I get the following outputs which seems as if the DHCP discover request from the client is skipped. Your thoughts and inputs on this are appreciated.

Wireless voice quality issues with wlc 5508 7.0.98
Hi,
I am having random occurances of voice drops (one-way audio) during phone calls. WLC 5508 (7.0.98) , LAP1242AG (only G antenna present), and 7925G phones. coverage is excellent throughout the floor and its a confined office space. Its not happening always. I am seeing these logs , not sure if it is related. :
*apfReceiveTask: Feb 10 11:31:53.831: %RRM-3-RRM_LOGMSG: rrmChanUtils.c:290 RRM LOG: Airewave Director: Could not find valid channel lists for 802.11bg
*apfReceiveTask: Feb 10 11:31:33.356: %RRM-3-RRM_LOGMSG: rrmChanUtils.c:290 RRM LOG: Airewave Director: Could not find valid channel lists for 802.11bg
I have set DCA list to1,6 and 11. I tried disabling RRM and statically fixing the channels and power also. Still the issue is seen,
7925G firmware is 1.4.1
i tried to do linktest from the WLC to the phone, but link test is failed. linktest to a laptop works though. I have only mac filtering for the voice ssid.
any suggestions pls ?
regards
JoeHi Serge,
Thanks for the suggestions. I have taken care of all the settings. Problem is , the user is seated in his office cabin and using the 7925 and there is around 50db signal strength in his room from an AP which is just outside the cabin. And this doesnt occur often, when we go to check and make calls, everything is fine whereas the user says it happens sometimes in the morning, evening etc... randomly... where the fone goes blank while in a call.... since the problem never happens when we go to troubleshoot the issue, we really dont know what is going on. This is happening when calling PSTN.
AP's are not restarting and there is no logs indicating that. Wireless infrastructure looks very much OK cos there are other users who are not experiencing this problem and there is ample coverage all over the floor. I am baffled why only one user has this problem even when he is seated in his office cabin.
Tried changing phones also, but still remains.
Question : i tried to do a linktest from WLC to his phone, but it failed, while linktest to laptops are working fine. Does wlc linktest not working for wireless phones ?
regards

Hi There,
I have upgraded the software version of a WLC 5508 that was running version 6.0.182.0 to 7.0.235.0 version. Looking at the show sysinfo on the controller (as shown below), I notice the Field Recovery Image Version has the previous version. As far I understand that image version will kick in if the 'ESC' character is hit during the boot up process.

Wlc 5508: windows 8 can't connect using wpa+wpa2
Dear All,
I need your help.
My customer have Cisco WLC 5508 (cisco wlc 7.0.116.0) .
We create ssid with layer 2 security wpa+wpa2.
Using Windows 8, it's can't connect to the wireless lan.
But if I change, the ssid, with layer 2 security wep.
It can connect / connected.
Please help.
Thanks,
JerriThis is a known issue with Windows 8. You need to upgrade your firmware to 7.0.250.X for wireless clients running Win8.
Another thing, choose one: Either WPA or WPA2. Don't enable one and "hope" the wireless client will make the choice because most of the time, they won't. -
WLC 5508 rebooted but still showing high uptime
Hi all,
I had to reboot our production WLC 5508 last night to apply a new adder license, which increased our AP count by 25.
We run a DMZ mobility controller alongside the primary controller, which handles our mobile/guest WLANs using a Mobility Anchor. Normally we would reboot both of these due to issues with the anchor after the primary is rebooted.
So last night I rebooted the primary after installing the new adder license. Once it came back up, I checked the license count and it had increased as per the new license. After that I rebooted the mobility controller, and waited to ensure that this came back up.
Almost straight away, all the AP's had re-associated with the primary (all 96 of them), and clients were starting to show up. I checked the same on the mobility controller (although this does not manage any AP's) and I could see mobility clients associating with this also.
The problem came this morning, when none of the mobility clients that were connected to the mobiltiy WLANs were able to get to the Internet, or any kind of outside connection. This is the typical issue we see when our core switch gets rebooted, or the primary on its own, without rebooting the secondary.
So to troubleshoot this morning the first thing I suddenly noticed was the uptime on the primary controller. It showed 298 days!!
Anyone seen this behaviour before? The WLC DID reboot - I watched it go down and POST again. Why would the uptime counter not reset?
We're on firmware 7.2.111.3 - which I realise is pretty old, but due to CIsco screwing us over with a limited upgrade path, we are not able to upgrade it yet (AP hardware not supported on any of the newer code above this version).
Any help appreciated! In response to Sandeep, here's the sh sysinfo output:
