WLC 5508 multiple country codes, limitations

Hi CSC,
Currently we are running 2x 5508 (7.2.111.3) in our Regional DC and all AP's from APAC are connected in H-REAP mode.
On each WLC the following country codes are configured:
Configured Country Code(s):
CN, ID, IN, J2, J3, J4, JP, KE, KR, PH, PH2, TH, TW
Regulatory Domain:
802.11a:      -ACEJKNPTU
802.11bg:    -ACEJP
We have some sites (mainly China), which facing issues on WLAN recently (slow performance, weak signal..etc.
RF & power level are 'managed' by WLC.
After reviewieing some sites with our vendor, the feedback to improve stability/perfromace, was to either run just 1 country code/WLC..or set RF/power level manually for each AP. (which of course would be an admin nightmare!!)
I havent found the same information on cisco.com & thought connecting AP's from different country's to the same WLC works well (incl. having the WLC manage power/rf)?
Are there any limitations, when having multiple country codes on same WLC?
Appreciate your feedback.
Thanks,
Stefan

As far as I remember, every AP with a different country code have different permissible level of power and a regulatory authority board monitors these. So in case you wanna mix the AP with different codes, it will choose the ones with lower power level and operate which might not be to your advantage since the users might want to operate at higher power level. So, you can find out the permissible level of Transmission power and group AP with same level together and get another WLC. Also, run a site survey to check for interference. Might help

  • Wlc 5508 multiple country codes + mesh ap

    Hello,
Currently my solution consist of two 5508 controllers and several non-mesh and few mesh AP (2600) running in flexconnect mode in one single site in europe.
    Everything is going fine.
However there is going to be a new site in Canada.
I found some documentation saying that multiple country code is not available for mesh ap. Mesh ap are not going to join controller if multiple country code configured . but all this documentation is regarding version 7.2 and older.
Im running version 7.4.100.0 and on configuration guide I don't find anything related to that.
Am I going to have problems with this as well?
If yes, what is the recommendation solution for this situation?
    Thanks in advance,
    Chris

They do support multiple country code, but with regulations, the WLC will use the common channels and power for each of the countries you have defined. Now this will never change so its still best to have separate WLC per country if possible. Especially with mesh since the backhaul is on the 5ghz, this is really your limitation is you have AP's in a country where there is no allowed 5ghz or a minimum number of allowed channels.

  • Can Local Mode Cisco Mesh APs (1522/1552) be supported in a Multiple country code 5508 WLC?

I've read previous discussions (i.e., "wlc 5508 multiple country codes + mesh ap") on this forum that stated Mesh APs can't be supported on a WLC set-up with more than one country code configured. If you have Outdoor APs which are set-up for local mode only, and not used in a Mesh wireless architecture (using Mesh Beacons), will this apply as well? I don't know if there are any caveats to this. Or if Cisco 1522/1552 APs can't be supported on a WLC using more than one country code period, regardless for how they are used, since they are considered Mesh APs. Another question, can a WLC support two regions (Region E and Region A), in a two country code assignment? I've read on the forum the downfalls for using more than one country code on a WLC, so understand that it will use the lowest common denominator settings (i.e., power, channels) for operation, so this isn't ideal.
I want to stick to one controller using one country code only. This isn't something I want to do, but we had an issue with an order being processed for APs, which resulted in the wrong region APs being delivered by a vendor, and leadership is exploring alternative options. So, the above is worst case scenario planning if we can't swap the APs back for some legal reason, or if it takes too long to accomplish. We could always purchase a smaller WLC with a license size to support only the different region APs purchased if it comes to it.

    Hi,
As per my experience, Normal APs(Local Mode) can work with multiple Country Code .
WLC can support multiple country code but it's a bad idea to have it. Only common channel, power will allowed.
Best is to buy a 2504WLC and use it.

  • One WLC 5508, Multiple Sites/Networks

So I'm trying to think this design out in my head.  Here is what I have:
Corp Office with a WLC 5508 configured with a management port and a guest WLAN port for guest wireless etc to the corp Layer 3 switch in a wireless VLAN, using 802.1q trunk of course.  The WLC is configured to be a DHCP server for the Guest WLAN.
(Side note:  the sites are connected using WAN routers at each location configured with bundled T3's and all routes are setup and each network successfully traverses to the other)
First phase will be to install 30 APs.  5 at the corporate office and 25 and two other sites.  I'm using a class A network but have subnetted the networks so to speak to make each site have multiple VLANs using class C networks.  I want to be able to implement the WLC 5508 at the corporate office and manage the APs centrally at all locations.  The APs are already configured for lightweight mode and I have successfully configured 5 of them and connected.
My question is if I install the other 25 APs at the other 2 offsite locations and connect them to the network, will it automatically contact the WLC and get a DHCP address from the Corporate WLAN DHCP even though it is at another site?  Am I overlooking a step or configuration method for this type of implementation?
    Thanks for all contributions!

Ok so I have configured my environment as suggested.  I can see the new IP Address lease to the AP at my remote site on
the DHCP Server (Windows Server DHCP at the remote site).  I can ping that IP from the Central office to the remote site however the WIreless Controller is not associating the AP at all.  Although I can ping the AP from the WLC.  I checked the logs and I dont see any association attempt from that IP or MACt.  So here is what I have:
    Central Site-
WLC 5508 With Internal DHCP for local APs
         APs associating successfully
    Remote Site
Windows DHCP with Option 43 Configured per Cisco AP Option 43 Whitepaper
AP 1142-Light-Weight attached to switchport (Wireless Vlan configured) and reachable via ping through all of network.
AP obtained IP from Windows DHCP from Wireless Scope I configured successfully.
So it doesn't seem the CAPWAP tunnel was built successfully.  I do have an ASA 5520 in the environment but all traffic to remote sites is wide open as I do not block any ports so CAPWAP traffic should flow well.
    Mission a step?

  • WLC 5508 Multiple Interfaces for Multiple SSIDs

    Hello guys,
I am trying to build a new network from scratch, I have the WLC 5508 w/ Aironet 3600e APs connected to my Netgear Smart Switches and a Linksys RV082 router that I'm using as my DHCP server with several VLANs for several stuff on my Switches.
    I have 2 questions:
    1. Can I have 5 Interfaces configured on 5 different VLANs, each SSID on each a different Port:
    Port 1: Controller management only=> 192.168.x.x /24
Port 2: SSID 1: WiFi Internal=> 172.16.x.x/12 (Radius Auth with no sharing)
Port 3: SSID 2: WiFi Internal w/ sharing=> 192.168.x.x/24 (Radius Auth with sharing)
    Port 4 :SSID 3: WiFi Guest=> 10.0.x.x/8 (Web Auth)
Port 5: SSID 4: WiFi IT=> 192.168.x.x/24 ( Radius or certificate Auth with access to the controller management interface)
    2. How can I use the Controller as the DHCP server for all the WiFi traffic, and how should that be configured to work with my other DHCP server?

Yes you can... but you have to disable LAG.  Each post will need to be connected to a dot1q trunk and you will only allow the vlan that is required for that port.  Also on the interface, you will define what port is primary and what is backup.  I'm guessing you will not be using the backup port.  For example... port 1 that connects to a trunk port will only allow the management vlan.  Here is a link to setup dhcp on the WLC

    Hi,
Two WLC 5508 running identical code version. One is 50 license Primary, the second is HA. Identical config on both. HA WLC can upload its config to the TFTP or FTP server but Primary cannot. The operation fails for  both CLI and GUI and for different protocols i.e. TFTP, FTP.

Not upgrading to 7.4.121.0 because of bug CSCuo63103. Have not restarted the controller yet.
Any one else had this issue ? Is there a workaround ?
    Thanks,
    Rick.

Thanks Stephen, In my deployments of 7.4.110.0 version I have not seen this issue so may be controller reboot will fix it (we do have HA to minimize the impact). I will keep the thread updated with findings and may request TAC for the special release 7.4.121.0 if the still not happy with 7.4.110.0

  • Cisco WLC 5508 V 7.0.116.0 Help

I have a WLC 5508, that has been working with AIR LAP 1522 AG-E-K9 and AIR LAP 1142N E K9 access points. I have deployed two
AIR-CAP1552E-A-K9 AP's on the WLC. I had to upgrade to Version 7.0.116.0, and had to set the country code to US ( Was ZA). The good news is that on US country code the new 1552's works great.
My problem now is to get the existing 1522 and 1142 AP's to work in conjunction with the 1552's on US country code.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank You in advance.

    George:
Multiple country codes are not supported for MESH APs.
You can only choose one country if you are using MESH APs whatever the model is.
If you have MESH APs with multiple country regulatories I think the only way to go is to replace your APs so all of them to be under same regulatory.
Features Not Supported on Mesh NetworksThese controller features are not supported on mesh networks:
    Multi-country support
Load-based CAC (Mesh networks support only bandwidth-based, or static, CAC.)
High availability (fast heartbeat and primary discovery join timer)
    EAP-FASTv1 and 802.1X authentication
    EAP-FASTv1 and 802.1X authentication

    Hi,
    By CLI:
Before change the country code on wlc , You must disable
WLC > config 802.11a disable network
    WLC  >config 802.11b disable network

  • Anchor mobility configuration getting lost in wlc 5508 ios code 7.4.100.0

It is observed that in WLC 5508 , ios 7.4.100.0 ,  mobility anchor configuration on wlan  is getting lost .  we configure anchor ip address on  guest wlan > mobility anchor >  Switch IP Address (Anchor).
We have configured the template on NCS 2.0 to push the anchor mobility ip address on all WLC
Has anyone oberved this behavoiur. We have more than 100 WLC  , and  everyweek  mobility anchor configuration is lost on some WLC having code  7.4.100.0.

I am having this exact same problem.  I am running 7.3 on 5508 WLC.   My remote site LAP's are using Flex (HREAP).  The initial access point that my laptop associates to connects with no problem, as soon as I wander out of range of the initial LAP and into the area of another access point, I lose data connectivity.   The was validated like the original post as I start a constant ping on the LAN and watch as the ping latency increases and then ping replies stop.  The only way to correct the problem is resetting of the wireless adapter on the laptop.  Side note my DroidX has no problem wandering from AP to AP.
    Laptop: Windows 7 32bit
I then returned to my home site and test where I have a secondary controller and the LAP's are configured for local mode, no problems roaming from access point to access point.   Validated with constant ping test.  The pings drop for a second and re-
    continues as the laptop reconnects.
**Edit: I am going to try the removing the DHCP Addr. Assignment required option, and report that back to the TAC engineer.

The problem is in deed solved by turning the "DHCP Address Required" but why?

  • WLC 5508 and Multiple DHCP servers in different sites?

    Hi
I work for health authority in our region and we just purchased a Cisco wlc 5508 controller along with 25 3500 AP's. We have multiple sites with different IP subnets in each, all connected by a frame relay (owned by ISP). Each site has its own DHCP server. I have the controller in our main site. So when I take an AP to a remote site, the Ap gets an DHCP address from local DHCP server (which is great) and contacts controller and joins controller. Everything is good. BUT, when a client joins at the remote site, it gets an address from a previous site which will not work because the client is now on a different subnet. We dont use Vlans as they dont transvers the frame relay. I need those clients to obtain DHCP from the local DHCP server from the site they are on. Is that possible??
I have updated the controller to latest version as well.
    Thanks

We call this as HREAP LOCAL SWITCHING!! but here is the catch.. everytime the AP joins the new site.. we need to configure the VLAN mapping and this wil do it for you!! Here is the link which will resolve ur issue..

  • WLC 5508 Failure to upgrade code

    Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade a WLC 5508 and I'm getting the following errors:
    TFTP Code transfer starting.
    TFTP receive complete... extracting components.
    Failure while validating the signature!
TFTP Failure while storing in flash!
The image is good and for the right model.  Does anyone have any ideas?

    Hello Kayle
both of my controllers are brandnew according to their serial-#: and Leolaohoo's post.
    Controller_1 : FCW1522L021
    Controller_2 : FCW1522L022
    Facts:
    =====
    1. Both are running code 7.0.98.218
    2. Upgrade to 7.0.116.0 (AIR-CT5500-K9-7-0-116-0.aes) failed
Just to be sure, I also tried code AIR-CT5500-LDPE-K9-7-0-116-0.aes, which also failed on both
    3. No firewall or antivirus is active on my workstation
    4. Upgrade was tried via Service-Port as well as management-interface
    5. Upgrade was tried via FTP as well as TFTP
    6. Short after file-transfer has been finished I get the corresponding message and even short after that I receive the message "Failure while validating the signature"
    7. Doing a "show logging", I get the message that the downloaded file seems to be corrupted (screenshot below), but checking the filesize gives me exactly the same size as on the CCO before downloading

  • WLC 2125 - Country code selection

    WLC Mode: AIR-WLC2125-K9
    Version: 7.0.116.0
Here is the scenario, we have two WLC, one is located at SG and the other is located at MY (In test stage).
Both WLC has configured with three Country Codes CN,MY and SG , as well as the Regulatory Domain 802.11a -CS and 802.11bg -ACE).
Yesterday we did perform WLC failover test and it was successful but we noticed some of the APs country code are incorrect set as before, we are tried into the AP config, and pull up the Advanced Tab and select the Country where the AP is physically located but the weird issue happened whereby there are only one country code available and the other two country code are missing.
Here is the AP model we used.
    AIR-LAP1142N-N-K9 (CN)
    AIR-LAP1242AG-S-K9 (SG and MY)
Could someone help to advise what would be the cause how to resolve this issue.
    Thanks in advanced.

With the -E there are many profiles that can be selected, as most tend to be very close to the same restrictions.
However I would contact your local regulatory domain group and ask them which country is the same as Mongolia. Explain what you are doing and have them tell you, and get it in writing. that way you are covered on your choice.

  • WLC 5508 Interface addressing - limitations?

Is there any limitations of network size for an interface in a WLC 5508?
Any recomendations of netmask size? Maximum /24, maximun /21?
    Pros/Cons?

Ok, so i would be safe to do this, for example:
    - Create an WLAN named "all_users"
    - Connect this WLAN (via AP group) to an interface called "the_interface"
    - Configure "the_interface" with 10.1.1.2 255.255.240.
That would actually mean that 4000+ clients could connect to a single interface. But it shouldn't be a problem with such an amount of clients?

  • Country Codes - WLC

    Hello,
When selecting country codes on a WLC - what exactly is this doing in the background? Does it prevent certain APs from being able to connect to the WLC. Are certain standards disabled etc..? I know it's just a tick box, but really want to understand what happens in the background.
    Thanks

    Hi GRANT,
Normally country code  specify a particular country of operation (such as DE for Germany or US for America). Each country code ensures that each radio’s broadcast frequency bands, interfaces, channels, and transmit power levels are compliant with country-specific regulations.

  • WLC country code list

    Guys,
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/wireless/ps5679/ps5861/product_data_sheet0900aecd80537b6a.html#wp9005314
Cisco's Wireless LAN Compliance Status displays my country Mongolia as -E and says its compliant. So I'm assuming we need to purchase LAPs with -E as the regulatory domain, eg: AIR-CAP3502I-E-K9.
But on WLC, I'm not able to choose Mongolia as the country because it is not listed there. Does anyone know the full list of country codes that we can use on WLC? Is that list more than what WLC shows us or just same as the list on WLC?
If I'm not able to choose Mongolia as the country, selecting another country with -E domain will make my LAPs work?
    Any comment is appreciated.
    Thanks,Delgee
