  • Loss of AP signal strength after upgrading to Clean Air on 5508's.

After upgrading three 5508's (which support 150 AP's) from WLC/WCS version  6.0.182.0 to version 7.0.98.0, our users complained about low signal strength.  Our pre-upgrade RSSI benchmarks confirmed a decrease of -10dB to -20dB signal strength across all AP's, effectively causing wireless networking to be unusable in key areas.
After confirming our Global signal strength settings in WCS and WLC's were still at the same settings they were at prior to upgrading, we contacted our VAR for advice.
He suggested that perhaps the upgrade caused all AP's to run at a lower signal strength.  He was right.
At his recommendation, we reconfigured the WCS to set two AP's to use Individual mode instead of Global mode.  This is found in Radios/802.11b/g/n/Tx Power Level Assignment.  Setting them to level 2 resulted in an average -15dB increase of RSSI, solving our problems in the test environment.  In one case we saw an increase of -30 dB for one AP.
The signal strength loss due to the upgrade was not expected, based on the upgrade documentation.  Now we must change the settings manually on the remaining 148 AP's.
I'd like to hear from anyone else who has experienced a decrease in signal strength after upgrading to Clean Air 7.  If you have information from Cisco that documents this problem, I'd REALLY like to read it.
    Hoping this may help you,
    RS

    Hi Rick,
this is not "expected" or "on purpose". It just happens that improving the RRM algorithm makes things better for 90% of the people but maybe worse for 10% of the people.
This is why you can set the Tx power treshold on the RRM or set the overal RRM algorithm sensitivity.
If you put the Tx power treshold to a louder number (=closer to 0) then the APs will reduce less their power level.
    Hope this helps.
    Nicolas

  • Wlc 5508 : guest users to be configured only give access for internal SAP application

    Hi,
I have one new requirement with one of the client.
I have wlc 5508 with 6.0 firmware. I need to have one guest wlan which will have access only for internal SAP application.
I have gone through cisco document for internet guest users , where web page will be redirected with user name and password once it is authenticated , we can access internet.
Provided if we have access list configured in wlc ...  for internet access only /
what about this mentioned scenario ?
can anybody suggest on the same ?

    Hi Vinod,
Go for the ACL on any Router or the switch.. i prefer not on the WLC..

  • Cisco WLC 5508 with 3702APs - mobile hotspot for 2000 Guest users

Cisco WLC 5508 with 3702APs - mobile hotspot for 2000 Guest users
I've been given a fantastic "opportunity" by my boss to use our existing wireless infrastructure to provide internet access to potentially upto 2000 VIP guests arriving with BYOD devices, in a very densely populated area for a 3 day event. We are talking an area of approx 200m x 15m. Think of it as an awards ceremony/concert. The solution will also be mobile so we will be using internet breakout from different telcos as it will move to approx 20 countries. The area is also incredibly densely populated with other wifi APs. I did a brief site survey and AirMagnet could detect over 2500 other 'rogue' APs from where I was stood! I hope CleanAir works!
We need a simple authentication method for them to connect with zero admin from our side. We don't want to just offer up a rolling daily PSK as that's a bit amateur and we don't really want the VIP guests sharing the PSK with others during their stay. Ideally they could self-provision by providing an email address.
I know the WLC can handle webauth for local users but I don't think it scales very well. ie I don't think I can offer the account to several hundred people.
Cisco ISE looks a very expansive (and expensive) product but I don't think we need all it's capabilities (do I?). It would be nice to just ask a potential user for their email address and grant them access and email them next year. I've seen Cisco NAC but that looks over the top too for just guest users who will only be accessing a shared internet connection.
I've seen 3rd party supposed software solutions from Kiosk Antamedia etc do they work with Cisco Enterprise WLC solutions?
We'd like to limit users to a certain (low) bandwidth and block (say) torrent traffic to keep the general user experience worthwhile.
Does anybody have any case study documents or experience of such a project? As well as the authentication it's how well the APs will handle the dense potential number of clients trying to connect in such a confined space.
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated from the knowledgeable community.
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Rasika,
We are having WLC 5508 model with software version running 7.4.121.0. AP Models are AIR-CAP2602I.
Normally our WAN links are good even while the issue pertains. We are connected to remote offices over ipsec site to site vpn for WAN. The link latency in WLC between the AP and the controller shows  <1ms.
currently the Guest network is using WPA2-PSK auth given in the controller. we are trying to find a option to make the Guest wireless auth local to the office, and see if this solves the problem.
    any suggestions,
    Thank you,
    Arjun

  • SNMP web authenticated users wlc 5508

    Hello everyone,
I am using web authentication with my Wlc 5508 and I would like to check all users currently connected (ip, login used, MAC address, ...) with SNMP.
I am using an external web server and my client are authenticated with ldap.
I know I can receive these information with traps, but I would like to create a short program which will check all users when I click on a button.
    Can anyone help me ?
Thanks a lot for your answers.

    Hello Julien,
Thank you for the info. +5 for solving your own problem.

  • Cisco WLC 5508 simultaneous Web Auth Users logins?

    Hi there,
    We have 2 WLC5508 (7.2.111.3) with several SSID's.
One of them is configured as Passthrough with an external splash server. Works fine.
Now we want to use the "On MAC Filter failure".
If the client MAC-adresse is configured under MAC Filtering on the WLC, the authentication is done without WebAuth.
If MAC-adress is not known, the client will be redirect to the external WebAuth server for authentication.
To keep the Passthrough functionality for the user, we hardcoded an username&password in the splash-page.
So, every client WebAuth uses the same username&password for authentication against the WLC.
User Login Policies is set to unlimited.
So far so good, it seems to work, but I have read, that Cisco 5500 controllers supports only 150 simultaneous Web Auth Users logins.
The two WLC's have abount 100-170 clients connected.
    Question:
    - Will these be an issue with the 150 simultaneous logins, despited when usin only one user for all Wifi-clients?
    - Can the user WebAuth be done with a Cisco ISE like Passthrough, no username&password should be entered by the user.
If yes, some guide information wolud be great.
    - When successfully authenticated, a logout screen shows on the Windows client. Can this be hidden some how?
    Thanks for the answers ;-)
    Kind regards,
    Norbert

    Question:
    - Will these be an issue with the 150 simultaneous logins, despited when usin only one user for all Wifi-clients?
    > I believe this means at the same time... I have clients doing the same thing with hundreds or more of guest users
    - Can the user WebAuth be done with a Cisco ISE like Passthrough, no username&password should be entered by the user.
If yes, some guide information would be great.
    > ISE is really used to login with a username and password and to be able to profile.  You would need to ask that on the Security forum to get their input if this is something then would do or just leave it on the WLC
    - When successfully authenticated, a logout screen shows on the Windows client. Can this be hidden some how?
    > Not really... some machines with popup blocker does block this and you don't see the logout, but you can't remove this.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Cisco ISE 1.2 & Cisco WLC 5508 v7.6

    Hi all,
we are planning to upgrade our WLC to 7.6 to fix a bug with FlexConnect Client ACLs but I have just seen on the Cisco ISE Compatibility table that the it only recommends up to v7.5 of the WLC 5508...
Cisco have told me to steer clear of 7.5 as it is in a defferred status, so does anyone know, or have running in a lab or production, ISE1.2 with a 5508 WLC v7.6 NAD ?
I would much rather know of any issues people are experiencing before hand than to have to go through a software upgrade and then rollback.
    Thanks all
    Mario De Rosa

    Hi Neno,
right I have this almost working now.
I have simplified the setup. I am not going to do any client provisioning at the moment.
So I can connect to the corporate SSID using EAP-TLS and I can successfully push the branch data VLAN upon successful authorisation.
Now I am trying to introduce the posture element & per user ACLs.
I have defined the redirect ACL & Flex ACL on the vWLC however the NAC agent will not pop-up. The client is in the right VLAN and the redirect ACL seems to be getting applied as the client does get an IP through DHCP. However, the client cannot ping the ISE or access the guest portal when I open the browser.
DNS resolution seems to be working fine.
VLAN220 is my datacentre VLAN which the Management Interface on the controller is plugged in to.
VLAN10 is the branch DATA VLAN.
below is some output to give you some more details...

  • WLC 5508, SW 6.0.199.4, 1142 AP: Clients getting dropped intermittently

We have deployed a WLC 5508 w/ SW version 6.0.199.4, 1142 AP's & open authentication w/ MAC filtering. Clients are randomly getting dropped with "Limited Access" shown in Win 7. In this state, the client machine is unable to ping the gateway and sometimes lose their DHCP assigned IP as well. A manual disconnect/re-connect to the SSID is required everytime.
I ran a debug on one the clients stuck in the "Limited Access" state (debug client xx:xx:xx:xx):

  • Wireless voice quality issues with wlc 5508 7.0.98

    Hi,
I am having random occurances of voice drops (one-way audio) during phone calls. WLC 5508 (7.0.98) , LAP1242AG (only G antenna present), and 7925G phones. coverage is excellent throughout the floor and its a confined office space. Its not happening always. I am seeing these logs , not sure if it is related. :
*apfReceiveTask: Feb 10 11:31:53.831: %RRM-3-RRM_LOGMSG: rrmChanUtils.c:290 RRM LOG: Airewave Director: Could not find valid channel lists for 802.11bg
*apfReceiveTask: Feb 10 11:31:33.356: %RRM-3-RRM_LOGMSG: rrmChanUtils.c:290 RRM LOG: Airewave Director: Could not find valid channel lists for 802.11bg
I have set DCA list to1,6 and 11. I tried disabling RRM and statically fixing the channels and power also. Still the issue is seen,
    7925G firmware is 1.4.1
i tried to do linktest from the WLC to the phone, but link test is failed. linktest to a laptop works though. I have only mac filtering for the voice ssid.
    any suggestions pls ?
    regards
    Joe

    Hi Serge,
Thanks for the suggestions. I have taken care of all the settings. Problem is , the user is seated in his office cabin and using the 7925 and there is around 50db signal strength in his room from an AP which is just outside the cabin. And this doesnt occur often, when we go to check and make calls, everything is fine whereas the user says it happens sometimes in the morning, evening etc... randomly... where the fone goes blank while in a call.... since the problem never happens when we go to troubleshoot the issue, we really dont know what is going on. This is happening when calling PSTN.
AP's are not restarting and there is no logs indicating that. Wireless infrastructure looks very much OK cos there are other users who are not experiencing this problem and there is ample coverage all over the floor. I am baffled why only one user has this problem even when he is seated in his office cabin.
Tried changing phones also, but still remains.
Question  : i tried to do a linktest from WLC to his phone, but it failed, while linktest to laptops are working fine. Does wlc linktest not working for wireless phones ?
    regards
    Joe

  • 7925 Phones voice quality issues with wlc 5508 version 7.6

    Hi all,
I have a mix environment with 1 WLC 5508  and more or less 6 sites with several Access Points ( all AIR-LAP1242AG and all in FlexConnect mode  Hreap ) and several wireless phones (all  CP7925G) . My Ap's have antennas 2.4GHz in all sites except 1 site ( the one i'm talking for now) with 2.4GHz and 5GHz , because of the problems we suggest to have all phone in A BAND (5Ghz) . In this site we force the phones just to A (802.11a only) , power safe NONE , Continuous scan mode , i fallow all in http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/7925g/7_0/english/deployment/guide/7925dply.pdf , one thing i didn’t do it was apply QoS because I can’t apply several ios commands in that 2960 with lan lite ios.
So I have 3 SSID for data and 2 for VOICE  ( one is common to all environment and supports 2.4 and 5Ghz , and other just to test one site , with only 5Ghz  with “[WPA2][Auth(802.1X + CCKM)][Auth(FT 802.1X)]”, because I read that problem can be phone rooming , and in FlexConnect only have fast-roaming in a CCKM or a PKM  key-management solution , but even like this the problem still exist) .
I have another sites with phones in 2.4GHz running well and others with problems.
i read here in forums lots and lots of people with similar problems , i tried several solutions ( WLC  upgrades versions  and phones firmware's , ….  ) tried all my best of solving the problems mas now I’m running without any ideas , i did also some site surveys and detect some interferers that why I change phones to 5Ghz , and I run also WLC Config analyser to help me , but all without good success. Some changes solve temporarily problems , but after some time , people reclaim about problems.
I can open a TAC case but first I want be sure if did all already.
Can someone try to help me?

    - it runs a/b/g/n and on 2,4 Ghz i schould have 300 mbit/s as for the 5 Ghz it schould also run 300mbit /s
    - the Ap has an uplink of 1 Gbit/s
    The clients:
    - have a intel Wifi link 5300 AGN Card
    To the Problem:
    - if i connect to one AP, and the Signal strength is High, i get an upload rate of max. 6-8Mbyte/s.
and i am the only Person uploading.
if i upload from 3 clients the same data from the same spot to the same target i get 2-3 Mbyte/s per client.
if connect to the same target and run over ethernet cable fom the same spot, i get an upload of 70 -85 Mbyte/s.
    Question:
    - Why am i having these Bandwith problems ??

    Thanks Scott,
I understand what you are mentioning, and i really didnt do it yet.

Is this mandatory for a 1 controller only ?
No mather what the manual say, after that the AP is rebooting 2 mins in 2 mins... with the same kind of messages.
The interface on the switch is getting a few input errors and the same numbers of crc... but are so few...
Next step ... i will change it to another one's place/pathing cable.
Regarding the Radius messages... any ideas ?
I'm already on 30 sec's of server timeout.

  • Iphone in Great Britian discovers Apple tech problem - Signal Strength -

    November 25, 2007
    Signal trouble: British iPhone mystery
Is O2’s network to blame, or Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone?
That’s the question posed by more than a few British iPhone owners who purchased the device in the past two weeks and have been struggling ever since to get decent telephone reception on it.
The problem surfaced two days after the phone went on sale in the U.K. when “Matlock” in Derbyshire started a discussion thread on Apple’s support board entitled “UK 02 (poor signal strength/reception problems)”:
My iphone can barely pick up even the slightest signal, although on occasion can pick up 3 ars, only for it to drop out again. I have two other 02 phones, a Sony Erricson and a Nokia n95 with no reception problems at all. Is anyone experiencing same problem with their iphone, I would like to hear from you. (link)
Two weeks later, Matlock’s query has received more than 100 replies (and 3,723 pageviews), most of them registering similar complaints. Some users found that reinstalling the software made a difference. When others returned their phones for new ones, the problem went away (although some reported that the new phones were no better).
Definitive U.K. sales figures are not available, but O2 reported that it sold “tens of thousands” of iPhones the first weekend it was available.
Several posters on the Apple discussion board volunteered that unlike the complainants, they were getting great reception on their iPhones. And many owners with signal problems expressed pleasure with how well the device performed its other functions.
But unlike American iPhone owners, who tend to blame any reception headaches on AT&T’s (T) cellular network, the assumption in the U.K. seems to be that the signal problem is Apple’s. The impression is reinforced by O2, which has been referring callers directly to the manufacturer.
One clue is that many British iPhone owners can, like Matlock, compare the signal strength on their iPhone with other cellphones using the same network (one user even posted photos showing the phones side by side). Another is that the indicator on the iPhone tends to jump to five bars as soon as it is placed in the charging dock, which suggests that the problem is battery related. As user Richard Catledge points out:
It says in the manual that phone signal is adjusted to the minimum power when not in use, just enough to detect the incoming pings, then it will power up to get the best quality call. It is digital, so as long as the signal power is strong enough to reconstruct at the other end, more power is pointless. I suspect this is what you are seeing, or a slightly flakey implementation.
Meanwhile, the consensus on the discussion board is that unhappy owners should let Apple know. Writes one user who posts as ::…SAM…::,
The only way to get anything done about it is if people that have poor signal problems is to take your phone back and get it replaced. The more phones they get back, the sooner they will do something to fix the problem. Emails and complaints are fine, they can be put in a folder, high handset return numbers cant be so easy to hide under the rug.
Thanks to InformationWeek’s Alexander Wolfe for the link. See his report here.

Interesting post. My previous phone was an 02 XDA Exec, a smart phone based upon a common handset (forget which one), but the smart phone before that was the same. They all had one thing in common - poor reception.
tbh, I think its an inherent problem with smart phones. However, with my iPhone I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary really. Its better than the XDA, at least the iPhone doesn't drop out completely!
But compare it to a normal handset and the normal handset will normally have a much better reception strength.

  • IPhone 5s call signal strength is 3 bars and my calls are breaking up?

I switched from an iPhone 4s to an iPhone 5s and now my iPhone signal strength is 3 bars and my calls are breaking up? what gives?
I live on top of a hill in a major metropolitan city and my carrier has always been Verizon and my call signal strength has always been 5 bars and occassionally on a cloudy rainy day I had 4 bars. Since upgrading to the 5s my call signal strength at my home has never gone past 3 bars even when Wi-Fi is connected. When W-Fi is turned off and LTE service kicks in, the call signal strength flutters between 2-3 bars and if I am on a call, the person on the other end is telling me I am breaking up.  This has never happened with my iPhone 4, my iPhone 4s.  Is anyone else noticing signal problems?

I am also having the same exact issue. I had an iPhone 4S with Sprint servince and always had at least 4 bars of service (4 dots after iOS7 upgrade) and I am now fluctuating between 1 and 2 dots on my new iPhone 5S. I am also having people I am on the phone with tell me that I sound like I'm in a tunnel and or that I am breaking up. I am also hearing the breakup of voice service even when speaking to someone on a landline. I took my first iPhone 5S back to the store and traded it in for a new one and am having the same exact problem with this new 5S phone. I was told by the salesman at the store that the problem was due to the 5S is using different towers than the 4S and that the new towers for the 5S were still being implemented. Do I know this to be true or necesarily believe this? No. Do I hope it's true or that Apple will come up with a fix for this problem in the very, very near future? Yes. Apple, what is going on with my service? It's obvious that it's happening to users from all of the major American networks.

  • Why do I have such poor/sporatic signal strength?

I have an iBook G4, and ever since I bought it i have had trouble with wireless connections. In my home, a small one bedroom apartment, I have and airport station. Connected to this is an external antenne. This is hooked up to a PC. My laptop has an airport extreme card. I have double checked and the card as well as the airport base station are installed correctly.
I am able to connect to the internet in my apartment. However, my wireless signal is always very weak. I am currently less than ten feet away from the base station and I am at less than half signal strength. Inside of my bedroom, approximatly twenty feet away from the base station I have little or no signal strength depending on what part of the room I am in. The signal strength varies constantly and does not allow me to connect to the internet.
My boyfriend has a PC laptop and is able to connect fine anywhere in the apartment. Also, he is able to detect several other wireless networks, where as I am only able to detect one.
When I am outside of my home and attempt to use hotspots, at school or coffee shops, I have little or no signal strength and am almost never able to connect to the internet for more than five minutes at a time, if at all.... All around me I always see PC users, as well as other Mac users serfing the internet without trouble.
How can I fix this? Should I buy a replacement airport extreme card? Is there any external USB devices that would help?
Thank you in advance for any help you are able to provide. I am desperate and will take any suggestions.

    Hi Kat,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
An improperly inserted antenna is the usual cause of weak signals. It takes considerable force to get it all the way in. This article illustrates a properly attached antenna.

  • HT1424 when i connect to a vpn on my ipod touch it says no internet even though my signal strength is full

    See:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem.
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
