WLC 7.3 and HA

case :
1x 5508 112 ap license
1x 5508 HA sku
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10315/products_tech_note09186a0080bd3504.shtml#combo1
what does mean:
With the new WLC coming up, HA SKU at the time of paring will get the AP Count:
If the new WLC has a higher AP count than the previous, the 90-day counter is reset.
If the new WLC has a lower AP count than the previous, the 90-day counter is not reset.
After switchover to a lower AP count, the WLC offset timer will continue and nagging messages will be displayed after time expiry.
in particular what "an higher AP count than the previous" means?
after switchover to primary restored wlc (112 licence) the counter is not reset and buying new licences for primary is needed?
and the difference between HA sku and 50 ap licence for the standby?
thank you

With Release 7.4, an  HA-SKU secondary controller can be configured as a backup controller for  N+1 HA. For example, the following can be used as an HA-SKU controller:
–5508 Series Standalone controller with 50 AP license
but once primary controller fails and all the AP on primary controller gets register on to the HA-SKU secndary WLC till 90 days it works okay but after 90 days you get the warning message that license are not sufficient to serve AP's

    Hi everyone
I would like  a Question About Flexconnect HA N+1 After WLC 1 Down and AP go to Joint WLC 2
    -Cisco WLC 8500   =  2 unit  version 7.6.130.10

I would like After WLC 1 Down is AP Go to joint WLC 2  Client associate in AP can use DATA Traffic between AP Failover ??
I think Mode Flexconnect client can use data traffic if WLC 1 , 2 Down becasuse Mode flex data traffic not go to WLC ??
    I think true ??
    thank you

    Hello
You should try a flexconnect deployment
combined with locally switched SSIDs, which
    should comply with your requirements.

  • WLC upgrade license and access point

    Hi everyone,
I need suggestion regarding wlc 5508  upgrade license. Right now i have 150 license for access points. There will be upgrade around 300 access points. So we are planning to buy new license until the maximum capacity of 5508 (500 licenses).
Our management ip address is 192.168.50.x/24 . so all the access point are pointed to this management ip address (in the same subnet)
    First question,
Because there will be an upgrade to around 450 access point. The current management ip address will not be enough.
Please, give me the  best suggestion ?
Should i create another management ip address ? or I need to make a bigger subnet using the current management ip address ?
if i create a bigger ip address, the current access points must be set again yups ?
    Second question
There will be a new link connected to the wlc, and i want to create new user subnets.
what is the best practices for this matter ?
if there are better suggestion, please let me know, i am still learning about wireless
    I have attached the topology.
    Thank you
    Fanie

For an example, a 5508 can support up to 500 AP's, and the AP's can be in one large subnet or be in many different subnets and or even different locations. As long as the ap knows how to discover the WLC or the ap already had joined the WLC, then the AP's don't have to be on the same subnet as the WLC. The easiest way to have AP's join is to stage them on the same subnet as the WLC management and then move them to a different subnet. I would probably have no more than 100 AP's per subnet, but that's me. Stage some AP's on the management subnet that the WLC is on and then when the AP's join and complete downloading code, change the switch port Vlan and shut and no shut the port. The ap will come back up and join the WLC.

  • WLPS/WLCS 3.5 and Campaign Mananger 1.1 Ships!

    All,
We recently put WLPS and WLCS 3.5 on the web. These new releases add new
features and run on WLS 6.0 allowing you to use new WLS features, such as
    two-phase commit across different databases.
    http://www.bea.com/products/weblogic/commerce/whatsnew.shtml
In addition we have completed a new product offering - the Campaign Manager.
Campaign Manager is a Swing application that allows business users to create
targeted, personalized campaigns for sites running WLPS or WLCS. You can
define discounts, send emails, select personalized content, track
advertisements, perform dynamic user segmentation etc. etc.
    http://www.bea.com/products/weblogic/campaign/index.shtml
All without a single line of Java or JSP code. Just start up the WLPS or
WLCS templates, boot-up the Campaign Manager and start clicking!
There cool! Check 'em out - you can download all three here:

We were using WLCS 3.2 and WLS 5.1 SP8 so far, we got a patch
(patch_CR043462) from BEA in response to some bugs we reported ( BEA Support
Case: 222714). This patch had some new classes (e.g.
CommerceInputProcessorExtended, PipelineSessionExtended) and to use them we
changed the code. The site is live now. I'm now trying to find the
effort/feasibility of migrating to WLS 6 and WLCS3.5. But during the
migration I found that the above patch is not shipped with WLCS 3.5. So my
question is, can we use the old patch given to us with WLCS 3.5 or shouldn't
it be part of the new WLCS 3.5 release ? What BEA suggests about this.

  • One WLC for Headquarter and Remote Site

    Hi
I have a question about the WLC remote deployment.
We have the following design at the moment:
    Headquarter
    - Network 192.168.49.0 /24
    - WLC 4402 Version 4.2.61.0
    -- 3 x LAP1252
    -- Layer 3 LWAPP
    -- SSID wep
    -- SSID wpa
    - Windows PDC with Active Directory, DHCP Server and local Data Storage
    - ACS Version 3.2 for TACACS and RADIUS authentication --> External DB to Active Directory
    Remote Site
    - Network 192.168.50.0 /24
    - 2 x LAP1252
    -- SSID wep
    -- SSID wpa
    - Windows PDC with Active Directory, DHCP Server and local Data Storage
    - ACS Version 3.2 for TACACS and RADIUS authentication --> External DB to Active Directory
Connection between Headquarter and Remote Site
    - 2 Mbit ADSL
The problem is, that the wireless clients on the remote site get an ip address out of the headquarter DHCP Range 192.168.49.0 /24. The users on the remote site
most of the time only use the local data server in the remote office. With the actual design the hole traffic is switched over the 2 Mbit ADSL connection the the
WLC in the headquarter and back to the remote site. That works but it is not that performant.
The problem could be solved with HREAP, but what I think is, that it is not possible to have the same SSID at headquarter and remote site with different VLANs.
How can I achieve, that the clients on the remote site connect to the same SSID (wep or wpa), get an ip address from the remote site DHCP server (192.168.50.0)
and the traffic is switched localy.
I hope you understand what the problem is.
Thanks in advance for your help!

Yes, putting the remote AP's in HREAP mode will allow the same WLANs to be available on the AP's but the traffic would be locally switched at the AP instead of being tunneled back to the controller. After you put the AP in HREAP mode you then would configure which VLAN you want traffic for each WLAN to be dumped onto for that AP.

  • Initial AP registration on a 8510 WLC HA-SKU and N+1 deployment

    Hi,
We have several 8510 controllers and one of them needs to be configured as HA SKU for N+1 deployment. I am testing the scenario with two controllers right now, so I have the primary and the secondary controller configured as part of the same Mobility Group and they appear UP. Please, see the rest of the configuration below.
When I power off the Primary controller, the APs don’t register to the HA SKU controller (secondary). These two controllers are in different parts of the network but they are members of the same mobility group.
Do I need to specify the HA SKU controller in the DHCP scope for the APs? I am not sure what I am missing....
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Thank you.

    Controller--> General:

    Hi Scott,
Yes, it is N+1 HA with HA-SKU what I need to implement.
“6000 Access Points Supported” is shown in the main GUI page.
I followed the guide you mentioned to do this configuration:
1 - From the primary controller, configure the backup controller on the primary to point to the secondary controller:
(Cisco Controller) >config advanced backup-controller primary Secondary 10.9.51.252
    (Cisco Controller) >show advanced backup-controller
AP primary Backup Controller .................... Secondary 10.9.51.252
AP secondary Backup Controller ..................  0.0.0.0
2 - On the permanent AP count WLC, use the config redundancy unit secondary command to convert the controller into an HA-SKU secondary controller:
(Cisco Controller) >config redundancy unit secondary
    (Cisco Controller) >
3- On the CLI, use the show redundancy summary command to view the status of the primary and secondary controllers:
    Primary:
    (Cisco Controller) >show redundancy summary
     Redundancy Mode = SSO DISABLED
         Local State = ACTIVE
          Peer State = N/A
                Unit = Primary
             Unit ID = F8:72:EA:66:B8:A0
    Redundancy State = N/A
        Mobility MAC = F8:72:EA:66:B8:A0

Peer Redundancy Management IP Address............ 0.0.0.0
    Redundancy Port IP Address....................... 0.0.0.0
Peer Redundancy Port IP Address.................. 169.254.0.0
    Secondary:
    (Cisco Controller) >show redundancy summary
     Redundancy Mode = SSO DISABLED
         Local State = ACTIVE
          Peer State = N/A
Unit = Secondary - HA SKU
             Unit ID = F8:72:EA:66:E4:40
    Redundancy State = N/A
        Mobility MAC = F8:72:EA:66:E4:40
    Redundancy Management IP Address................. 0.0.0.0
Peer Redundancy Management IP Address............ 0.0.0.0
    Redundancy Port IP Address....................... 0.0.0.0
Peer Redundancy Port IP Address.................. 169.254.0.0
As far as I can tell I have completed all the steps. In my configuration, “Redundancy Management IP Address” and “Peer Redundancy Management IP Address” are 0.0.0.0; these are the only differences I can find with the configuration in the Guide.
    Redundancy Management IP Address................. 0.0.0.0
Peer Redundancy Management IP Address............ 0.0.0.0
    Thank you.

  • WLC Config Analyzer and AP Model / End of Sale APs

Be nice if the WLC Config Analyzer spit out a list of end of sale/end of life.  I know the some TLMA type tools will do this with SNMP.
I've got a show run-config from a lot of 5508s running 7.6 and want to recommend older APs be replaced, however each controller has almost 500 APs on it.  I could do a "show ap summary" and then some excel magic to find them.
Be nice if I could do a sort/statistic of what model APs across many 5508s.

You need to configure the AP's in h-reap or FlexConnect which it is called in version 7.2.  This way you can specify what ssid is mapped to what local vlan.

  • WLC 4402 username and password expires automatically

    Hi,
We are facing issue with Cisco WLC 4402 (Cisco AireOS Version 4.2.205.0) and username and password expired automatically. It happens very often. We are not able to retreive the password, so everytime we need to reset(factory default) the Cisco WLC4402 and doing fresh installation.
Whether it is the hardware issue or software bug.
Also is there any possibility of recover the username and [password with resetting the cisco wlc4402.
    Kindly suggest on this issue.
    Regards

Hmmm.. Strange!! are we using any TACACS to manage?? or just the management username and password??
I guess after 5.2 WLC code or so we have the option of resetting the password without losing the config!!

  • NAC OoB and WLC Causing flap and network down

I'm trying to intall a NAC Solution in a Wireless network but it's causing a MAC address flapping between switches interfaces and it's bringing the network down.
I've done the deployment following the Cisco documentation:
    (WLC)-----(L2 Switch)-----(NACServer)--------(L3 Switch3com)
                        |_____________________________|
One connection from L2 to L3 throught NAC and one trunk out-of-band.
I Filtered the Vlans that should only be showed in the trunks but it keeps causing flapping when I plug the untrusted interface of NAC.
The only thing is that I wasn't able to take the Vlan 1 out of the Trunk in the 3Com switch (NAC Trusted interface).
Anybody has experienced this before and get solved?

yes, you can do it, just remember that the accounting server IP address must be the "service IP address" of the trusted management interface of the CAS

  • Authentication eap-tls on ACS or local EAP WLC over Lwapp and 7921

    Hi All,
I install WLC to provide Wlan architecture and the project was extended for VoWLAN. we have 7921 and E51 running over the wide WLAN architecture.
Computer using Data over wirless are working over PEAP done by ACS and CA signed certificate + user secret on PC is link to the domain account and secret stay the login and password. Our problem is that user and password is link via ACS to Active Directory. The policy of password is to change frequently.
For the Phone we are actually running authentication over Leap but I'm working to define the best security solution for us.
I confront PEAP and Eap-TLS for now:
    1) PEAP check the authentication of ACS via certificate trust and authenticate via MS-Chapv2 and the secret password known by user. My problem here is the phone can only be static what is potentially not acceptable
    2) Eap-tls which is the best secured security due to the double side certificate authentication + (login / password) on the phone
so I need to manage here Certificate Management ? I mean I can use either the MIC CA certificate on the phone or User CA defined one which I can put on ACS or Local EAP WLC and the put the ACS CA trust on the Phone.
If I understood well I have to put User.cer and ACS_CA.cer on each phone and pout the User_CA on the ACS ?
I have already Certificate on the ACS signed by CA (like veri-signed) so I must create CSR for any phones to be able to use the same CA ?
I'm thinking to use also the local Eap certificate of Controller to manage all of that to avoid every potential money to pay to the trust CA of ACS
can you help me to know if I understood everything good ? I would be please to exchange experience on that
    thanks ;)
    bye

I am currently using EAP-TLS authentication on my wireless users using ACS 3.2. I have had that problem before. This is what I did...
Setup a Microsoft Certificate server as my
CA. You can use same machine wih your ACS and CA.
Then, generate certificate signing request from ACS then request a server certificate from CA then copy and install a certificate to ACS. On the ACS, go to global authentication setup check the EAP-TLS cetificate. If it failed to respond means that the server certificate is not properly setup.
On the windows xp clients, connect your machine using wired LAN, then request a certificate from CA(the same CA that you have use to your ACS) using IE (ex. http://CAip/certsrv), but this time request a client certificate. The name you should put when requesting the cert must be you local windows user, use 1024, choose microsoft base cryptographic provider 1.0. then installl the certificate on the client. Verify you client certificate it i was installed properly.
At that poit you should be able to connect you r wireless client using EAP-TLS.

  • 2 Cisco WLC 5508 controllers and software upgrade 7.6.130 + FUS 1.9

    Hi
I have two WLC 5508 controllers that need 7.6.130 and FUS 1.9 installed. (Current version 7.3 and FUS 1.7)
Configuration: One controller is at Site A and the other controller is at Site B (two different states..)
They're configured so that if Site A goes down, Site A AP's will failover to Site B and vice versa ..
    - What would be the recommended approach for upgrading the software to 7.6.130.0 (from 7.3) and also upgrading FUS 1.9 (from 1.7)?
My plan was to download 7.6.130.0 to both controllers and pre-download the software to all AP's (about 100 total between both sites) and then reboot the controllers at night at the same time? Or one before the other?
Step 2. Install FUS 1.9 to each controller.
I'm concerned over what might happen during the upgrade and AP failover etc..
    Thanks

This is what I would do:
Upload v7.6.130.0 to all WLCs and then use the pre image download to push the image to all access points.
    Dont reboot the wlc
Image swap in the access points so that v7.6.130.0 is primary
Move all access point to one of the WLCs (A)
Enable ap AAA authentication on the WLC that has no access points and the one you will work on first.  This prevents access points from joining
    Reboot the WLC (A)
    Upload the FUS 1.9.0.0
Reboot WLC (A) this takes up to 45 minutes
When the WLC (A) comes back online, uncheck ap AAA authentication
Move access points from WLC (B) to WLC (A)
Enable ap  AAA authentication on  WLC (B)
Perform all the other task you did earlier on WLC (A)
    That's it.

  • ISE, Wireless (WLC) , 802.1x and Ipads

    Hi,
I cant seem to get the Ipads to work properly.
    Laptops have no issues.
I have used the iphone configuration utility to create a wireless profile, Emailed it to the Ipad, imported the profile.
It prompts for a username and password on import.
When trying to join the wireless network, i get a request for the wireless nextwork password.
    On WLC I get
    client authentication failure,
    Reason:Unspecified  ReasonCode: 1
Im going to keep digging, but if anyone knows how to do this and save me hours of trawling that would be great

    Hi,
Ok, I managed to get it connected.
My issue is that even if i have the network advertised in my wifi->choose a network options on the ipad, i cannot connect to it.
I have to manually select other, enter the details, select the WPA2 and enter credentials. It then connects.
I have tried to role out profiles to the device, but it does not seem to have any effect at all. It does not try auto join nor does it allow joining via clicking on the wireless network directly.
This is obviously a problem if i have to roll this change out to +100 users.
Ideally, I would like to have the profile available which they can just install, and enter credentials.
    Anyone got this working?

  • WLC 7.4 and Switch Brocade

     Hi everyone,
Wondering with someone out there have been connected Cisco WLC on Brocade Switches. I am doing it now but I am not responsible for the Switch side and don´t know nothing about brocade so far.
It would be great with someone has some tips to share with me.

    Flavio,
The link Leo has in his post is the direction of what is typical in a Cisco environment.  It is up to you to work along side your vendor "Brocade", to determine the correct setting on the switch side.  Most of the time, you need to trunk the WLC port if you have more than one vlan you will setup on the wlc.  Alos if you decide to LAG on the WLC, then you need to be able to setup an etherchannel on the Brocade switch that is similar to how Cisco switch is configured.  I would reach out to Brocade for help on that if you are not familiar with how to configure the switches.
