WLC in a non-Cisco network

I'm planning to use a Cisco WLC 5508 in a non-Cisco core network (switch and routers) and I'm wondering about the problems I can have.
For the moment, I can only think that I can't have CDP (Cisco Discovery Protocol) in the new core network (access switchs are cisco).
So, do you need CDP to run a Cisco Controller Based WLAN?
Maybe for Rogue Switchport tracing? Anything else?
Can I use a WLC connected to a non-Cisco core network?
More trouble?
Thanks

Cisco wlc's do not use LACP, LAG is non-negotiated, just on. 5508 also require 1g ports, it will not connect to anything less than this.

As for LWAPP/CAPWAP, you will need to make sure that if yo uare going through a firewall that UDP ports 12222/12223 for LWAPP and UDP port 5246/5247 are not blocked. You can use option43 on your DHCP server for the APs to find the controller.

OR
DNS discovery—The access point can discover  controllers through your domain name server (DNS). For the access point  to do so, you must configure your DNS to return controller IP addresses  in response to CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER.localdomain or CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER.localdomain, where localdomain
is the access point domain name. When an access point receives an IP  address and DNS information from a DHCP server, it contacts the DNS to  resolve CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER.localdomain or CISCO-CAPWAP-CONTROLLER.localdomain

  • WLC vs Non Cisco AP Clients

    Please help,
I am in the process of connecting non Cisco AP's as transparent clients with an attached Ethernet embedded Linux network device to the facility wireless network. The wireless security is set to WPA2-PSK with TKIP. My non Cisco AP's are configured with the correct Security (WPA2-PSK) and cipher is TKIP.
I have tested the clients and the attached device with a autonomous Cisco 1242 and a 1310 and the client AP's connect without any problem. I can ping/access the AP and attached device flawlessly. The Client AP's connect automatically after being power down many times without fail and allow me to access the attached device without fail.
The WLC however reports authentication failures when the client AP's attempt to connect. The IT staff at the facility disabled exclusions for any authentication failure and the client AP's still fail to connect using WPA2-PSK(TKIP)
For testing purposes the facility IT department configured the WLC for WPA-PSK(TKIP) on our designated SSID and the non Cisco client AP's connect, however the connection is intermittent and very unstable.
Also note that my laptop and 2 other Dell laptops using three different wireless adapters have issues connecting and maintaining a stable connection without being disconnected. (Facility AP is a 1252 AP and it has an external 8dBi Omni directional antenna and our client AP's and laptops are within 35 feet of the antenna. The antenna is mounted 20 to 25 feet from the ground.
Since the AP's are now able to authenticate (sometimes they do and sometime they don't) we then try to ping the devices and we are unable to do so. I had to enter the WLC's IP as the Gateway for the client AP and the attached device's GW to allow a ping/connection from the physical network to the device behind the client AP.
I suspect the WLC is doing some form of ARP filtering, any suggestions?
So I now have the ability to ping the client AP and attached network device except the connection is unreliable with high latency and some packet loss. (Remember that I had flawless connectivity with a autonomous 1242 and 1310 previously and still do if I use them)
Now to make things even harder I have no real control/access to the WLC. The facility IT department is not allowing me to make any changes, however I can make suggestions and they will make the changes if the changes I suggest are blessed by management.
    let me sum it up:
    - Client AP's work perfectly with a autonomous Cisco 1242 or 1310 AP using WPA2-PSK(AES or TKIP)
    - Authentication issues with WLC using WPA2
    - I can "sometime" authenticate when the WLC is using WPA and when exclusions are disabled
    - the coverage is also poor even with the 8dBi antenna
    - Packet loss and high/random spikes in latency
    - Facility IT are being difficult
    - Facility IT insist on using the WLC
    - I can't change the client AP.
    What do you suggest?
    Thanks,

Is there anything that could be interfering with either the 2.4 or 5 Ghz spectrum? Microwaves, bluetooth devices, cordless phones, etc?

  • ISE cannot push the profile to the cisco network setup assistant?

We have tried a few android devices with version 4.2+ but still got the error message ‘Unable to download profile.(Have you logged into the guest portal?)’ as shown at the bottom picture.
In fact, we are connecting the devices to an open SSID which performs MAC filtering, then redirect to CWA and login with AD credentials,
then redirect to Google play store and can successfully download the network setup assistant.
Could you please advise the possible reasons that would cause this error message and make ISE cannot push the profile to the cisco network setup assistant?

Here's a snipit from the Android spw.log.  I see that there is an error trying to verify the hostname.  Is it possible that this is caused by a non-trusted certificate?  I'm using the self-signed cert built into ISE.  I have an entry in the public DNS for guest.domain.com that resolves to the IP of my ISE server accessible from the guest subnet.  I'm allowing all traffic from the guest VLAN to the ISE vlan on the firewall and all traffic to/from the ISE server in the provisioning ACL I have applied by ISE on the WLC during native supplicant provisioning.  I know that guests can communicate with the ISE server since regular guest portal redirection works, just not the network setup assistant.  I've renamed the domain to domain.com in this snipit.

  • Non CISCO unknown devices are being discovered in LMS

    Hi!
I have had no problem with discovery which was used on cdp basis so far.
Now the CDP packets do not arrive via new MPLS backbone network.  I have to use the "ping sweep feature in IP range" feature. I had to enter more than 400 subnet from file before there are more than 400 branches. ( etc. 10.31-9.1-50.252 255.255.255.252 )
    I have experienced two problems
    1. The discovery never end ( now this is not important ) :-)
    2. The common services -- device management shows discovered unknown devices whose ip addresses out side the range what are entered by me in the ping sweep range and theirs OID is not CISCO.
    (  1.3.6.1.4.1.2001.1.1.1.1  ,  1.3.6.1.4.1.11.2.3.9.1  ,  1.3.6.1.4.1.674.10892.2  , 1.3.6.1.4.1.18334.1.1.1.2.1.7.1.2 and even more )
Due to more than 300 unknown devices the LMS device number is beyond the license number!!!!!
    Our questions.
Why does lms add the unknown devices ( non cisco devices ) to the inventory ?
How could lms discover  these devices ??? ) ( theirs IP are out of ping sweep range and non cdp capable devices )
    Thanks in advance!

    Thank you!
The unknown devices were in unreachable state and they were added to DCR.
I don't use include or exclude filter what were referred by bug.
In spite of i use seed device list from file the LMS ping sweep debug log shows that LMS try to ping other IP addresses!!!!
You're right, it is not normally operation may be TAC will be needed to  solve it.
( whether who tested it ?)

  • Using 802.1X and non-Cisco IP Phones

    Hi there,
Having some questions about an 802.1x/non-Cisco ip phone setup and was hoping to find some answers/user-experience with this setup.
    Main questions i'm facing:
    1) When using non-Cisco ip phones (eg Nortel or Siemens) and a previous authorized client connected behind this ip phone gets disconnected. What will this action do with the authorized state of 802.1X on the switch port? WIll it stay authorized until the reauth timer expires or does it reject communication from any other device?
    2) What about EAPOL-Logoff messages from the ip phone to the switch. Are these only used by Cisco phones when they experience a link-status change on data ports?
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Overall, you need to try and deal with the fact that a machine can disappear from the network and the network may not know about it directly (i.e. Link doesn't go down).
I have no idea what other phones do, but Cisco phones send an EAPOL-Logoff when something is unplugged. This lets the switch know directly, and 1X session start is torn down immediately, closing what would be a security hole.
Fundamentally, re-auth is a workaround only, and this is not the reason to enable re-auth to begin with.
If your phone doesn't send an EAPOL-Logoff in this case, the switch might be left thinking an attack is underway when someone else tries to plug in (with presumably a different MAC). You do NOT want this to occur.
    Hope this helps,

  • ISE web auth for non-cisco switch(D-link 3528)

Is it possible to use ISE(inline posture node) to redirect the wired users to ISE guest portal ?
And the wired users will get full network access after they pass the web auth.

you can use ISE ln-line posture node with 3rd part switches
RADIUS access device must supply the following RADIUS attributes:
        Calling-Station-Id (for MAC_ADDRESS)
        User-Name
        NAS-Port-Type
RADIUS accounting message must have the Framed-IP-Address attribute
VLAN, DACL features can be used  but again it depends on switch models let us know  specific switch  models . Certain advanced use cases, such as those that involve posture assessment, profiling, and web authentication, are not consistently available with non-Cisco devices or may provide limited functionality,

  • MARS topology in non-Cisco environment

In a heterogeneous, non-Cisco environment (e.g. Dell switches, Sidewinder firewall), is it possible to obtain accurate topology/visualization information? If so, how is this accomplished? Any other best-practices/gotchas for getting the most out of MARS in such environment would be helpful as well. Thank you.

We don't really have any topology information in MARS, and for the most part don't pay much attention to the topology or attack graphs/charts. Don't even use the summary page. We don't use the MARS for anything but collecting events. Maybe I don't know what I'm missing, but we get along just fine without(we even have a mostly Cisco network).

  • Can cisco MSE(mobility service engine) configured to work with non-cisco access points?

I understand that access points can be configured to forwards all the probe requests to cisco wifi controller. cisco MSE(mobility service engine) gets the probes from wifi controller to find the location of the mobile devices.
My question, can cisco MSE(mobility service engine) be configured to work with non-cisco access points?

No and the reason why is the NMSP communication from the MSE to the WLC. Other vendors don't support this so there is no communication happening.

  • What non cisco devices can be monitored by MARS

We are in the process or purchasing the MARS 110R and was wondering what other non cisco devices on our network can be monitored by MARS for intance our exchange servers.

You can monitor the security event logs (as well as most other windows event logs) using MARS. I'm not sure it understands Exchange specific event logs, but it should be able to parse the normal authentications that take place in an Exchange environment (and are logged to the security event log). Here is the list:

  • Cisco Prime - non Cisco devices

    Hi
We have started using Cisco Prime for our network management. On our sites we have a few devices managed by other vendors which are non cisco devices, we would like to keep these in the diagrams on cisco prime but since we don't manage them we don't want them to use up our licenses.
Is there a way to retain the device info maybe as a note or something on the side of the diagram without the device using up a seat in the license?

Which Prime? LMS or Infrastructure? ..or one of the others.
LMS for example doesn't ever display a non-Cisco device in the Topology view. It does limited management of non-Cisco devices and they do not consume device licenses.

  • Non-Cisco WGB and H-REAP

Anyone had success rolling out non-Cisco WGBs with H-REAP?
My customer is using WLC 5508 with code 7.0.116.0. As per WLC config guide ( http://goo.gl/6kX0d ), Cisco has tested multiple third-party devices for compatibility. Is it possible to get that device list somewhere? My customer is using TP-Link model TL-WA901N v2. The 5508 WLC does not recognize this device as a WGB. Rather, it displays the wired client behind the non-Cisco WGB.
Is H-REAP supported for non-Cisco WGBs? The WLC config guide says H-REAP is not supported with Cisco WGBs, but does not make a distinction for  non-Cisco WGBs.
    Regards,
    -steve w.

    Hello Stephen,
Thanks for clarifying. Can Cisco disclose the third-party devices it has tested (non-Cisco WGB)?
    TIA,

The Cisco cables I've seen and used are a proprietary pin-out for use specifically with Cisco network console ports.  They allow you to do some hardware diagnosis on Cisco switches and routers via a console app on an iOS device.  They are not ethernet.
To my knowledge, regardless of what you plug in there, the docking port is incapable of supporting an ethernet connection on a stock iOS device.

  • Yet another PEAP question...non-Cisco cards...

So, we are about to embark on building a wireless network infrastructure using 1220 AP's. So far all wireless clients use Cisco cards and Win2k.
People are interested in all sorts of wireless devices now, some including built in wireless nics or no pci or pcmcia card slots.
We have ACS 3.1.1. Can we use PEAP in our situation with a client using say a Compaq tablet PC with an integrated NIC? Or, how about a desktop PC running Win2k using something other than a Cisco card? If so, what are the required pieces? PEAP supplicants? etc?
    Thanks!

    Hi ,
    In short answer is
    a) If ACS supports eap-chap ( which microsoft supports ) , you can use
non cisco card with microsoft supplicant and will work fine
I believe acs 3.2 will support is , I am not sure on acs3.1.1
    b) You can buy 3rd party supplicant like meeting house etc and can use
    non cisco card

PEAP is hybrid process ( combination of leap and eap tls )
To download server side certificate on ACS you can use eap tls doc.

You have to careful while selecting the client supplicant , you can choose Cisco peap supplicant or Microsoft peap supplicant
You can have Microsoft peap supplicant or Cisco Peap supplicant .
If you have windows 2000 OS , than if you load service pack3 , Microsoft peap supplicant is installed . On top of this if you install ACU 5.05 microsoft supplicant wil be overwritten by Cisco supplicant .
In case of XP , if you install service pack 1 , it will install microsoft peap supplicant , if you install ACU 5.05 it will be overwriteen by Cisco Peap supplicant .
Microsoft peap supplicant send eap-Chap in EAP tunnel and Cisco support EAP-GTC in eap tunnel .
with non cisco card it depends on which radius server and database you are running .
At present ACS 3.1 supports EAP-GTC so it will not interoperate with Microsoft supllicant . In later release ACS will have support for EAP-Chap so
that you can use 3rd party card with Microsoft supplicant and ACS3.2

  • NAC with NON-cisco wireless

    Hi there,
I know that with WLC 5.1 and NAC 4.5 Cisco started to support OOB, NAC implementation. Now here is my question:
A customer has CISCO environment except for the wireless which is another vendor. What are the options to bring wireless traffic into NAC server? Is OOB deployment possible?
    Thanks,
    rdianat

So what is the solution for this scenario?
remote site has non-cisco autonomous wireless AP. NAC is centralized. I can not use OOB since there is no support for non-cisco AP in OOB mode. As a result I use InBand mode. This means that local wireless trffic in remote site must travel to central site, go through NAC Server and go back to remote site. Is this correct?

  • Issues connecting non-Cisco AP as a repeater to Cisco 1230

    Hi,
I just spent the whole day going through the old posts and can not find anything that is relevant to our issue.
We just purchased batch of 20 1230 11b APs to be used a root APs in our wireless network. Our users connect to our network using non-Cisco APs as using "AP Client" mode of the AP. Some APs have combined "AP Client/Repeater" and this is where we have issues associating these users to the 1230 APs.
Mind you that the APs that have "AP client" mode or the USB WIFI adapters have no trouble connecting to the Cisco unit. Onlt the APs with combined "AP Client/Repeater" or "Repeater" modes do not associate.
So far we tested non-Cisco AP such as Dlink, Netgear and Trendnet.. none of them worked as a repeater.
Does any one any experiance with this?
Update: We also did some testing and tried to create a bridge between Cisco and non-Cisco AP without any luck. Again all 3 brands have been tested.
    Thanks

That is a tough one.... what you will need to do first, is look at the settings in the repeater and match it as much as you can on the Cisco AP. Look at data rates, preamble, DTIM, etc.
