WLC Redundancy - Regional / Centralised model

Hi all,
Our organisation has multiple controllers at regional sites (one per region) & want to implement redundancy by placing one controller at headquarter's datacentre as a backup in case the site's failed.
All our controllers are 5508 with 7.0.116.0 loaded
I did a search around and found multiple documentations of how to do it but all related to creating a mobility group
Is it possbile to implement this scenario without creating mobility group ? (As in Cisco docs for software release 7.0 June 2010 - quoted
"Centralized and regional controllers do not need to be in the same mobility group" )
I did try around but couldn't make it work ? Have anyone experience with this setup & give me some hints please?

You can configure an access point to have a preference, in order, for up to 3 controllers. When the AP boots it will use these configured preferences to find a controller.
If you configure the AP's preferred Primary Controller as the local (regional) controller and the preferred Secondary Controller as the headquarters then when the regional controller is not available the AP will try to register to the headquarters controller.
You can configure this on an AP-by-AP basis, but this can be cumbersome and slow. If you have WCS or NCS, then you can use AP Templates to apply these changes on a site-by-site basis (by selecting multiple APs at a time), which will save you a lot of time.
Here is a screenshot for doing this manually on each AP:
Choose the Wireless tab on the top menu bar
Choose All APs under Access Points in the left nav window
Select the AP to be modified
Choose the High Availability tab
Enter your Primary and Secondary controller Names and Management IP Addresses

WLC Redundancy Question

Hi Community,
I have one question regarding the redundancy feature for two WLC 2106. We have installed on a customer site 2 WLC's 2106 and 6 AP's. Primary and Backup WLC works fine. No the customer asks the question if there is a option to copy the guest access wlan user from the primary controller to the backup controller? The lobby user activates a new user on the primary controller and if the primary controller fails, then the user did not get access to the wlan guest network.
Any ideas?

Mobility - it's used for client so that they can roam without any issue and one tunnle will be stablish between wlc-1 and wlc-2. if wlc-1 goes down the client will be local to the wlc-2 and if the guest user is not present on wlc-2 then it will not be able to access network.
HA for AP - primary, secondary are used to achieve this.
HA for WLC (WLC redundency) - suppose you have two WLCs if one goes down then second will start serving without any issue. For that master wlc will push all the config to second wlc and some other mechanism to achieve this. This functionality is not yet support.

WLC Redundancy over L3 link

Hi All,
Is it possible to deploy WLC redundancy over L3 link???
In our scenario we have 2 controllers located in 2 different sites, the link between the site is L3. AP's are deployed across four other locations, two are coming to site 1 and rest two are coming to site 2 . How can i make redundancy on this setup , Please advice
Controller is 4404 and AP's are 1231G series .

What is your link between each site? Also, I suppose your ap's are running in H-REAP mode? If you don't have enough bandwidth, then you shouldn't try it. You can always try to move the ap's to either wlc and see if users have any issues or not, before you try to deploy redundancy in this matter.

5508 WLC redundancy issue.

I am trying to set up fail-over for Cisco 5508 Wireless LAN Controller which is using 7.4 version software. I setup the redundancy port and peer redundancy.
While checking,one becomes active and other becomes standby.
Its showing everything perfectly including peer,standby-hot etc.(XMLs matched also)
I disconnect the 1st WLC uplink and then the Stand by becomes active. Fine.
Later i connected the 1st WLC link and disconnect the 2nd WLC (currently active). Here comes the issue.
Then other WLC is not becoming Active and it enters in to Maintenance mode. Means Down.
why this issue happens?
One thing i need to highlight is, one WLC is having 50 AP basce license count and other WLC having 250 AP base license count.
Is this will be an issue? Whether the License count should be same on both?
If so,how can i trim-down 250 to 50 AP base license?
Any clues? Help me!

You don't have trim down the license. The license amount is going to be what you have on the primary. As far as failover the way your doing it, I don't thinkers supported that way. Only a hard failure. So you will have to manually switch the primary back.

WLC Redundancy after RMA

Hi,
after an RMA i installed a new WLC 5508.
Now i want to pair the new controller with the old one to the HA mode.
The Controllers are in SSO mode.
IP Adressing of both controllers are ok but the Mobility MAC Adress on the new Controller is not right and i can't change it.
How can i pair the both Controllers via CLI or GUI?

You have the flexibility to configure a custom MAC address as Mobility MAC instead of using the default behavior of using the Active WLC MAC address as Mobility MAC. This can be done using the configure redundancy mobilitymac <custom mac address> command on the Active WLC. Once configured, you should use this MAC address on other controllers in order to form a mobility peer instead of using the Active WLC MAC address. This MAC address should be configured before forming the HA pair. Once the HA pair is formed, the Mobility MAC cannot be changed or edited.

WLC redundancy with prime

Hi all,
We are going to implement high availabilty in 5508 WLC with version of 7.3.101 . We will be using Prime infrastructure 1.2 for monitoring purpose.
With Prime , whether we can monitor and manage redundant WLC also or only active WLC?...

I just know from experience. You can only GUI/ssh into the primary WLC when you enable AP-SSO. So once the pairs are in HA, that is it.... You have only the primary WLC IP address available. You learn things the hard way sometimes because there are things not documented.

WLC Redundancy

Hello,
I have 2x WLC 5508 running version 7.2
1st one is setup and running.
My questions is: If I want to setup Active-Passive redundacy, do I need to manually setup the 2nd one exactly as the 1st one and put them in the same group?
Or is it a way to copy all of the configs I made on the 1st one over to the 2nd one?

I would setup the first WLC and then do a config backup via TFTP or FTP. Once you have that config backed up you can then apply it to the second WLC. From here you will need to change the IP and WLC name of the second WLC so it doesn't conflict with the first.
Also, if you want it to be a true Active-Passive then you will want to make sure that all of your APs are configured with primary and secondary controllers.

Multiple WLC redundancy using flexconnect across multiple branches.

I'm wondering if someone could give me a hint please.
I have two WLC 5508s in two different branches/countries.
They have APs configured as Flexconnect with local routing.
However all the APs are only on the first controller as the controller IP was manually entered before deployment.
(I'm guessing this will need to be changed to DNS resolution?)
1. I would like to load balance APs that are in more contries/branches across Europe between the two WLCs
2. and/or if one of the controllers go down, the APs would automatically move onto the other one.
I'm just not sure if both can be done if the APs are on flexconnect.

It can work, If you have configured the both WLC with excatly same way(same wlan id, same wlan name.....etc)
2. and/or if one of the controllers go down, the APs would automatically move onto the other one.
If the configuration for both wlc is same then primary fails then secondary will take place. Make sure WLAN ID order has to be consistent.

Hello I have 2 WLC: a 2504 and a 5508, can one be the backup of the other?
How do i configure such settings?
I want a automatic backup when 1 is down (the primary would be the 5508) it will switch automaticly to the2504?

2100 WLC Redundent LAN Uplinks?

Hi,
In the data sheet for the 2100 it states that "Provides eight 10/100 Ethernet ports, intended to support a combination of access points and redundant LAN uplinks"

My question is.. How do you configure the redundent uplinks as aparently the 2100 doesnt support LAG (Link aggregation)..

So i can uplink the primary and backup ports to seperate switches?
I'm thinking that i would home all interfaces to the same priamry and backup ports and then uplink each port to a different switch. There isnt really a need to try and load balance as the traffic volumes are quite low.
What do you think?

WLC Redundancy - Disaster Recovery

My questions is in relation to disaster recovery, for wireless. We have our main data center, in the US, with two 5508 controllers. We have a DR location, in Europe, with two 5508 controller. We're upgrading our 5508's to the 7.4 code, so that we can take advantage of the RP port for our controllers. With that said, is there a way to make the US and Europe controllers redundant? If there's a disaster, in the US, would the AP licensing, and AP's attach to the European controllers? Our AP's are set up with HA. I'm more concerned about the licensing flipping over to the DR controllers. I've tried researching this topic, and can't really find anything on it. Thanks!

If you can't use the RP port and configure SSO, then yes you need to have adequate licensing to support all the AP.
But if the AP fall from one DC to another, are the clients going to get the same IP? Failing across DC is most effective when you use FlexConnect, IMHO.

WLC Guest Wired Redundancy

Is it possible to have WLC redundancy through wired guest interfaces? We have two WLC anchors and I want to use them both for wired guests. If they are both setup on the same wired guest VLAN will this work?

They cannot.
The "ingress" interface is the one that is capturing wired guest traffic (so your switchports have to be configured for that vlan). It has to be different on all controllers.
What Stephen was raising is that anchors are not counted in this rule because they don't have ingress interfaces ...
When you anchor a wired guest wlan, the foreign WLC has the ingress and the anchor WLC has the egress. So you can have multiple anchors.
But every WLC having ingress interface should be in a different vlan.
The reason for this is that, WLCs can't synch on who will capture the wired client traffic and it becomes a mess if they all answer to the client.

How to refresh a region during tab change

Hi All,
In my page I have two tabs.There is one region each in each tab.
Tab 1 region is on top of Parent View Object and Tab 2 region is on top of Child view object. Relationship is one-to-one.
In tab 1 region, If populate some attributes <of ParentVO> then, those attribute values will be copied to the Child View Object by calling an AM method from the tab disclosure listener.
When I switch from tab 1 to tab 2 for the first time all the populated attributes < Parent VO in Tab1 > are getting copied to child VO and I can see those values in tab 2 <UI> .
But after that when I switch back to Tab 1 and change some attributes and go to tab 2 then, the newly populated attributes are not shown in the second tab.
But If I go to the next page and come back to the same page then in the second tab I can see all the newly populated attributes..
refreshCondition of the task-flow is ifNeeded.
In my disclosure listener I am trying to refresh the region binding programmatically. <AdfFacesContext.getCurrentInstance().addPartialTarget(regionbinding)>.
But the region in tab 2 is not getting refreshed.
Please Help...

Earlier I had tried #{true} as refreshCondition. But that didn't help. And I had tried changing an input parameter value by calling a bean method [toggleValue: which will toggle the parameter RefreshFlag ]
and keeping the refresh Condition as ifNeeded. But in this case it didn't work. Earlier I had tried this approach and it was always working.
Now I will try with the option you gave me.. Calling refresh method of UIXRegion. The method seems to be the exact one which I was looking for from the doc.
The documentation says...

Refreshes this region's model. This method calls RegionModel.refresh(javax.faces.context.FacesContext), and adds this region as a PPR target. This method must only be called during PhaseId.INVOKE_APPLICATION phase. A RegionNavigationEvent is always queued.
So can I call this method on a tab disclosure listener..?
Or Do I need to check for the Phase and call this method.. It would be great if you can make it a bit more clear.
Do I need refresh or refreshCondition along with this approach..

Guest Mobility Anchor N+1 Redundancy Design

Anchor WLC redundancy is achieved through the mobility groups. For redundancy, we can increase the mobility group size, including additional controllers for redundancy.
Does N+1 redundancy works across different mobility groups (Anchor WLCs in different DMZ zones for different internet breakout points for Guest access)?
Does it supports pre-empt (preferred) action when the failed primary Anchor WLC recovers?
For WLC 4.1 version or later, mpings are used for keepalive packets between the foreign and anchor controllers. However, there is no setting to set the order of preferred Anchor controllers.

You can have multiple anchor wlc in the DMZ. These will always have a different mobility group name than your foreign wlc's. There is no pre-empt in a multiple anchor wlc. I believe with 5.2 you can specify which anchor wlc you want traffic to go to, but then again, I don't like any of the 5.x code. With the 4.x and earlier versions of the 5.x code, the decision on where traffic will go to is calculated by the foreign wlc that has to anchor the trafic to one of the anchor wlc's in the DMZ. Local WLC uses these anchor wlc's in the order WLCs are configuredIs failover transparent to the user.... no. Since best practice is to make sure your dhcp scopes on the wlc do not overlap, users who is anchored to one that fails, will move to the other wlc. This usually will make the client renew its dhcp address.

WLC IOS upgarde from 4.2.99.0 to 7.0.220.0

Current IOS:- 4.2.99.0
Upgrade to :- 7.0.220.0
I wants to upgade WLC with7.0.220.0 IOS. My question is that should i go for direct upgarde from 4.2.99.0 to 7.0.220.0 or is there any IOS version i have to upgarde.

You need to upgrade to
4.2.209.0 before upgrading to 7.0.220.0
