WLC upgrade and failover

Hi,
we have two WLC. WLC1 in one data center and WLC2 in DR data center. I've to upgrade s/w on both WLCs. currently all of our APs are associated with WLC1 so I'll upgrade WLC2 1st. and then WLC1. when I ugprade WLC1 then all APs will failover to WLC2. once WLC1 s/w ugprade is done then I've to failover all APs to WLC1. how do I do that?
Plus: I found that two images on cisco website. FUS.aes and .aes file. do I have to upload both files on WLC for ugprade? which one should I upload first?

Please read the Release Notes first!  "FUS" firmware is meant for WAPs/WLCs in Russia, comrade.

You can pre-download the new IOS into the WAP BEFORE you reboot the WLC.  This way when the WLC reboot the WAPs will too.

  • UCM version upgrade and failover

I'm new to the company, and I currently have a Cisco MCS 7828-H3 running UCM 6.1.1 with Unity connection 2.1.1.  We had a psu go faulty on the MCS which killed the phone systems for a day, and had everyone going crazy.  I figure best bet is just to buy a backup MCS off of ebay, and run it in some kind of failover config.  I was also looking to upgrade to some of the newer versions.  Looking at the version compatibility chart, 6.1.1 isn't even shown as compatible with my server, so I'm not sure how that worked out. The newest 8.6 is indeed compatible, but I was wondering how licensing works on this device?  Does smartnet cover the upgrade for going from 6.1 to 8.6?  Also, I see two machines on ebay (one of which looks beefier), but the compatibility chart doesn't show them as being compatible.  Will I still be able to upgrade them to the same versions?  How does failover work with this system.  I really don't want to have to bother with getting any new licensing for the backup server since it will just be there in the case of an emergency (1 day every couple of years).

If a model does not show up try looking here:
Cisco 7800 Series Media Convergence Servers
    Solution Overviews
If it's not the same HW most likely you won't be able to install it and won't be supported if you manage to install it but the specs do not match what is on the link.
As far a failover it's either you buy another node license and create a subscriber (which will be seamless failover for users) or you backup your config daily and when your PUB crashes you take that config and load it into the other server which will be running the exact same version as the production PUB and you also need to reach licensing in order for them to rehost the licenses from one server to the other. Obviusly the 2nd option means you'll be without phone services until you restore your config on the other server and get the licenses.

    1. I need to backup the running-config from the WLC but i cannot find how to see what the name of the file is on the WLC. Its Version 6.x
    2. When I upgrade to Version 7.x from 6.x do I need to upgrade both the flash and the bootloader?  Where can I find both these files?

    Joel,
    Can anyone ponit me in the right direction as to the following;
    1. I need to backup the running-config from the WLC but i cannot find how to see what the name of the file is on the WLC. Its Version 6.x
         - From the controller click on Managment> Upload>
         - From the Upload from controller option select Configuration and fill out the TFTP information and the desired path and filename. Then click start
    2. When I upgrade to Version 7.x from 6.x do I need to upgrade both the flash and the bootloader?  Where can I find both these files?
         - You will need to have either valid warranty or a support contract with Cisco, if so follow these instructions.
         - http://www.cisco.com Click on Support
         -  Click on Download Software, Then Wireless, Then Wireless Lan Controllers, Then select your type of controller and there you will find the firmware files you need. (you maybe prompted at any point in this sequence to login.)

  • IP Phone 7921 / 7925 roaming issues after WLC upgrade from Version 7.2 to 7.3 and / or 7.4

    Hi,
We have a customer which is using a Cisco WLC 5508 and 3502I APs. As he used the 7.2.103 release, There were no issues with VoWLAN. Now he needed new APs and ordered the 2602I. To use them he needed to upgrade the WLC to a 7.3 or later release. After the upgrade, he now encounters problems while roaming with the phones. The phones were tested with FW 1.4.1, 1.4.2 and 1.4.3.
Configuration is set according to wireless voice design guides (VoWLAN DG 4.1, 7921 Deployment Guide). A Cisco TAC is also in progress, but they seem to be uncertain whether it is a wireless or CUCM issue, but I don't see a reason why it should be the CUCM when the only thing changed is the WLC Software Version.
Is there anybody who is aware of such issues and can offer help?
    Thank you in advance.
    Best regards,
    Patrick

    Hi,
we had a TAC ticket open with this customer and after some time, the TAC gave us the advise to use this release and the problems are now solved.
So for others having the same issue: If you only need to support the 2600 APs, stay with the latest 7.2 release as there are some issues with the 7.3 and 7.4 release. If the customer requires HA, AVC or any of the new features + wireless voice, be very careful as it seems that the newer releases are having problems with that. I hope that Cisco will fix this very soon.
    regards,
    Patrick

  • WLC upgrade license and access point

    Hi everyone,
I need suggestion regarding wlc 5508  upgrade license. Right now i have 150 license for access points. There will be upgrade around 300 access points. So we are planning to buy new license until the maximum capacity of 5508 (500 licenses).
Our management ip address is 192.168.50.x/24 . so all the access point are pointed to this management ip address (in the same subnet)
    First question,
Because there will be an upgrade to around 450 access point. The current management ip address will not be enough.
Please, give me the  best suggestion ?
Should i create another management ip address ? or I need to make a bigger subnet using the current management ip address ?
if i create a bigger ip address, the current access points must be set again yups ?
    Second question
There will be a new link connected to the wlc, and i want to create new user subnets.
what is the best practices for this matter ?
if there are better suggestion, please let me know, i am still learning about wireless
    I have attached the topology.
    Thank you
    Fanie

For an example, a 5508 can support up to 500 AP's, and the AP's can be in one large subnet or be in many different subnets and or even different locations. As long as the ap knows how to discover the WLC or the ap already had joined the WLC, then the AP's don't have to be on the same subnet as the WLC. The easiest way to have AP's join is to stage them on the same subnet as the WLC management and then move them to a different subnet. I would probably have no more than 100 AP's per subnet, but that's me. Stage some AP's on the management subnet that the WLC is on and then when the AP's join and complete downloading code, change the switch port Vlan and shut and no shut the port. The ap will come back up and join the WLC.

  • WLC 2112 and WLC 2504

This might be a really stupid question but I need to ask just so that I get a definitive answer. I have a customer that is using a WLC 2112 and has maxed out the licenses for the WLC. I have suggested for him to purchase a 2504 with 30 or 40 licenses to replace the existing 2112. He doesn't want to purchase 30 to 40 licenses and doesn't want to remove the 2112 from the network environment. He would rather purchase a WLC 2504 with 15 licenses and just add that into the network.
My question is, will there be a problem running a 2504 and a 2112 on the same network? Or can I just make one a primary and one a secondary?

That should be fine. Just make sure the WLCs are running the same code version and everything should work fine. This is required for APs failover from one WLC to another. You don't want the APs upgrading or downgrading code versions every time the ap moves from the primary to the secondary WLC.

  • WLC upgrade to 7.0.98.0, WCS & Location Appliance to upgrade - Building maps location

    Hi,
We recently upgraded about 24 WLCs (4402s and 5508s) from 6.x to 7.0.98.0. In order to support these WLCs through WCS, we also need to upgrade the WCS to 7.0.164 which is currently running at 6.0.132.0 (Linux OS). Same is the case with Wireless Location Appliance 2700 to be upgraded as well. Wireless Management system has number of building maps with AP locations.
Prior to upgrade the WCS / Location appliance we need to take the backup of these building maps, already stored to export after the upgrade. Kindly let us know the directory where all these maps are being stored, as during upgrade we will loose all the stored data / maps.
    Thanks for your kind assistance.
    Regards.
    Shuja

    Hi Shuja:
Who says you're going to lose all your maps and stored data during a WCS upgrade?  The installer for WCS 7.0.164.0 will see the 6.0.132.0 installation and upgrade it in place, modifying the existing data to work in the new 7.0 format.  The installer for WCS 7.0.164.0 will even ask you if you want to make a backup of this data before the upgrade process even starts, although it would be a good idea to pull a backup of everything before you start.  (One can never have too many backups, right?)  The backup application in your existing install should be at /opt/WCS6.0.132.0/backup .  Run that application and it will prompt you for a location to put the .nmsbackup file.
The .nmsbackup file that results from a WCS backup is what gives WCS its portability across platforms (physical/virtual) and operating systems (Windows/Linux).  It's essentially the lifeboat of WCS, containing the database, the maps, the licenses and other supporting files.

  • WLC 5508 and LAP1310 - Not syncing up!

As the title states I have a WLC 5508 and a LAP1310 that will not sync up.
The error stated in the traps log is "AP with MAC (xxxx.xxxx.xxxx.xxxx) is unknown."
WLC software release is : 7.2.103.0
IOS on the AP is : 12.4(18a)JA2
Upon some investigation I found that the "AP with MAC is unknown" error usually points to one of two things:
    A.  WLC firmware needs to be updated
    B.  AP needs to be updated.
    C. The AP is not compatible with the WLC.
I am leaning toward solution C and I am looking for a conformation or a correction, if anyone could help out that would be greatly appreciated!
I've tried reading the compatibility matrix released by Cisco, but I found it mildly confusing as to what is and isn't supported by each software release.

Problem 11: 1250 LAP Not Able to Join WLC
The setup consists of a 2106 WLC that runs version 4.1.185.0. A Cisco 1250 AP is not able to join the controller.
The log on the WLC shows this:
    Mon Jun 2 21:19:37 2008 AP with MAC f0:2x:cf:2x:1d:3x (APf02x.cf2x.1d3x) is unknown.
Mon Jun 2 21:19:37 2008 AP Associated. Base Radio MAC: f0:2x:cf:2x:1d:3x
Mon Jun 2 21:19:26 2008 AP Disassociated. Base Radio MAC:f0:2x:cf:2x:1d:3x
    Mon Jun 2 21:19:20 2008 AP with MAC f0:2x:cf:2x:1d:3x (APf02x.cf2x.1d3x) is unknown.
Mon Jun 2 21:19:20 2008 AP Associated. Base Radio MAC: f0:2x:cf:2x:1d:3x
Mon Jun 2 21:19:09 2008 AP Disassociated. Base Radio MAC:f0:2x:cf:2x:1d:3x
    Mon Jun 2 21:19:03 2008 AP with MAC f0:2x:cf:2x:1d:3x (APf02x.cf2x.1d3x) is unknown.
Solution: This is because the Cisco 1250 series LAP is not supported on version 4.1. The Cisco Aironet 1250 Series AP is supported from controller versions 4.2.61 and later. In order to fix this issue, upgrade the controller software to 4.2.61.0 or later.
Problem 16: 1000 series LAPs not able to join the Wireless LAN controller, WLC runs version 5.0
This is because WLC software release 5.0.148.0 or later is not compatible with Cisco Aironet 1000 series APs. If you have a Cisco 1000 series LAP in a network, which runs WLC versions 5.0.48.0, the 1000 series LAP does not join the controller and you see this trap message on the WLC.

  • 1232 ag autonomous to LWAP upgrade and will it support with 5508 will work fine ?

Hi can anybody help me .
we have few sites with old 1232 ag AUTONOMOUS existing AP's , They are  connected through 1 mbps link to main office .
Now we are planing to upgrade with WLC 5508 and few 1140 ap . but we want to use these same 1232ag ap on some sites.
So we need to upgrade it to LWAP .
1>Is it possible to upgrade this model of AP
2>Which is the ios i should download , is it avaliable in cisco site (as this ap is end of sale now )
3>can any body help me how the step to upgrade this autonomous ap

Just to add, the 1230's are not supported on the 7.2.x wlc code. You can however run the 7.0.x on the 5508 to support the 1230's. Also make sure you look at this link, because you might have to add the hash value to the wlc in order for them to join. It depends when the APs were manufactured.

  • 5508 WLC Upgrade steps

    Single 5508 WLC with 8 x 1142 APs.
5508 is running FUS 1.3, software version 7.0.116.0, field recovery image 6.0.182.0.
I need to bring the software version up to at least 7.2.115 to support 2 new 2602 AP i need to install.
Question is; do I install FUS 1.9 then update my controller to 7.6.120 or do I need to do any intermediate steps?
This is my first time upgrading a WLC so I'm fresh and this is a production WLC.
    Cheers

    Hi Fisher.
Normally It doesn't matter as long as you get it done but make sure that you reboot the WLC before doing the next.
Here is the procedure for FUS upgrade:

  • WLC 4400 and WLC 5500

We have a site with a WLC 4400 and we would like to setup a Controller failover. The WLC 4400 is EOS/EOL and the replacement available is WLC 5508. Can someone advice me on how to configure these units in Primary /Secondary mode so that if any of the Controllers fail, the other one can take over?
    Thanks,

    Hi Akil,
    You are most welcome
Yes, you can configure 4400's and 5500's in a redundant configuration, but both should be runningthe
same code version. I believe the latest version that is compatible for both is 7.0.220.0.
this is the last version that supports the 4400 series.
    Here's a note that reflects the support;
    Note
Controllers  do not have to be of the same model to be a member of a mobility group.  Mobility groups can be comprised of any combination of controller  platforms.

  • WLC Upgrade problems (disable unit)

    Hello.
I am complete rookie in the wireless area. I have to implement a mesh wireless network and a WLC 4404 was given to me.
I started the WLC, configured a few IPs, country, etc, and then I rebooted the unit.
When rebooting I got this error, when services are starting:
    - Starting LOCP: LOCP Key not found (error).    (after this the WLC stops and I can´t do anything more)
I then decided to upgrade the image via CLI, while pressing the ESC button on startup (from 5.1.151.0 to K9-6-0-182-0.aes) and getting the following menu:
        Boot Options
Please choose an option from below:
    1. Run primary image (version 5.1.151.0) (active)
    2. Run backup image (version 5.1.151.0)
    3. Manually update images
    4. Change active boot image
    5. Clear Configuration
    Please enter your choice:
I chose option 3, put some IPs and before upgrading it stated the following:
    You have entered:
    IP address     : 192.168.1.1
    Netmask        : 255.255.255.0
    Gateway        : 192.168.1.10
    Server IP Addr : 192.168.1.10
    Is this Correct (Y/n)? y
!!! WARNING updating using .aes or unapproved files will disable this unit !!!
So the WLC doens´t boot and I can not upgrade to an .aes image, but all images are .aes.
Any ideias on how to upgrade the RTOS of the WLC to 6-0-182-0.aes, or on how to boot it normally with the original image?
    Thanks in advanced,
    Joao Ribau
P.S. - does anyone know of a good doc on mesh networks?

I think (emphasis on the word "think") I may know where the problem lies.
You said "implement a mesh wireless network and a WLC 4404" but the firmware you are using is 5.1.151.0.  This version is for standard LWAPP/CAPWAP and not a valid Mesh firmware.
    Hope this helps.

  • WLC Upgrade & AP

    Hi all,
i'm going to upgrade a pair of WLC with a very old software image. Since this situation requires several intermediate upgrades, I was wondering if I can disable the distribution ports at the begining of the upgrade and then enable them at the end, in order to upgrade the access point just once. Can this procedure create some trouble?

    Not sure,
Since you are essentially disabling wireless anyway by disabling the distr ports, you might as well not disable the ports.
keep in mind a few things:
The new image will not take effect until reboot; therefore it will only affect APs when they re-associate to WLCs running the newer image.
To speed up the deployment of new code to APs, reboot the WLCs at the same time.
The APs will upgrade/downgrade based on what the controller image is. The image-data portion of AP joining.
Any vxworks based APs will not work with 5.x code (1000 series)
The controllers should be set to L3 lwapp prior to upgrades

    Hi,

Somewhere I found  recomendation to open http before upgrade and use it at first. It  works, but what to do next? To stay on http only?

  • WLC upgrade due to Advisory

    Hi,
We have a 5508 WLC running 7.2.110.0 and need to upgrade according to the advisory released today.
It seems we have three upgrade choices:
    7.2.110.0 to 7.2.111.3
    7.2.110.0 to 7.3.110.0
    7.2.110.0 to 7.4.x
I've not upgraded one of these 5508's before, but if they are anything like ASAs then I need to be careful.
Can anyone advise if upgrading from our current version to 7.4 requires planning. Same for 7.3.
How will the WLC upgrades affect the APs (3502i) ?
How does one recover from a failed upgrade on these WLCs?
    Thanks.

WLC version 7.4.100 will need Prime Infrastructure Version 1.3 to be managed, but Version 1.3 is not yet available to download at this time.
Huh? What is Prime Infrastructure and why do I need it?
