WLC5508 and AP1041

I have 5508 WLC and number of 1041 APs
Some of the APs OPERATIONAL STATUS shows DOWN
To test it I take that AP from its original location, bring to computer room on the same building and connect it to the same switch port via patch cable
Its OPERATIONAL status becomes UP
I have other APs such 1042, 16xx, and there is no problem on
Could you please say, is this related with cabling, or RF
Thanks

Response for the Bonus Question:
If the NCS database grows too big for the disk space allocated, data will be deleted only according to the data retention settings under Administration>System Settings and will eventually crash if an additional virtual disk isn't added.  Keep in mind this warning starts popping up when the utilization on any of it's volumes goes above 60% so you probably have a little time.
Check Administration> Appliance to see which volume is above that threshold.  It could actually be the localdisk volume causing the alert and not the database.
Adding additional disk space to Prime Infrastructure is as easy as doing an ncs stop, powering down the VM, adding a new virtual disk (NOT increasing the size of original disk), then powering the VM back on.
To add additional disk space to NCS the TAC has a disk grow script that has to be executed once the additional virtual disk is added or you'll never see the volume increase once you power the VM back on after adding the additional drive.

  • HA with WLC5508 and licenses

    Hello.
We are currently running our wifi with a WLC5508 with a base license for 100 APs, a NCS and about 90 APs.
Now are wifi is growing and we will need more than 100 APs shortly. When I checked the prices I found that a new 5508 for 100 APs isn't that much more expensive than an add on license and it would be great to have some redundancy. If I use two 5508's with license for 100 APs, what will happen if one of them fails and all APs connect to the single 5008? Is there a way to use both licenses for a single 5508 in the case that one of them goes offline?
Bonus question: What happens when the NCS database grows to big for its disk space (running as virtual appliance)? Will it start to delete the oldest entries in the database or will it fail in some way?

  • Wireless controller ha between wlc5508 and wlc 4402

    We have 2 wlc:  a wlc 5508 ( license 100 AP ) and  wlc 4402 ( license 12AP).
We try to setup when 5508 down, 12 identify AP (important AP -Group A) will join 4402 and all other AP (not improtan AP -Group B)
    wont joint  wlc 4402.
First, all AP join wlc 5508, 2 WLC have same mobility group.
After that, we  config 12 APs belongto group A have primary and secondary wlc, group B only has primary wlc.
When wlc 5508 down, some of APs of GroupA and   some of APs of GroupB join wlc 4402. We test many times and we have differnet result each times.
is theare any way to resolve our problem?
    Thanks.

Just to add, make sure that the WLC is running the same code, if not, then make sure the ap is supported on the code that is running on the 5508. The issue with mixed code is the ap will upgrade and downgrade very time they switch to a different WLC.

  • WLC5508 with LAP1142N ignoring Radio Policy

    Hi..
I've got a weird problem with the WLC5508 and LAP1142Ns..
We have a few WLANs using all radios.. And also one that is set to only use 802.11g.. however.. a lot of clients using that WLAN are shown as using 802.11a for connection.. (Apple iPad2 devices).. some use g, but most of them go in with a.
    why?
I tried rebooting the iPad.. turning off and on the WiFi.. resetting the LAP that it was connected to.. resetting the Networksetting on the iPad..
all the things I could think of where a dormant setting might have hidden..
it just doesn't care.. always in the client list with protocol 802.11a...
help.. I want the iPads on g...
    Thank you..

    Hi
I decided to create the same set up with 1131 and 1141 and found no problem connecting with the specified radio type. My controller is also on 7.2.103. Please take a look below. In my opinion probably there is an issue with 1142 APs, which is strange as the AP downloads its code and WLAN config from the Controller. Secondly, I would suggest that you take a look at the wireless adapter configuration of the client to ensure that it's radio type is set to Auto and not default to dot11a, b, or g.

  • N+1 redundancy with 2504-HA

    Hello,
I have question regarding N+1 redundancy with 2504-HA WLC.
Can I use 2504-HA unit for H+1 redundancy? SSO is not needed
    I have two wireless network:
    1.      With WLC 5508 with about 40 AP(1262), all them are A regulatory domain
    2.      With WLC 2504, with about 30 Mesh AP(1552), all of them are E regulatory domain
I plan to use two 2504-HA units for backups, one for network with WLC5508 and second for network with WLC2504.
In case N+1 redundancy is management with Prime mandatory ?

    Hi,
Better to use same model and same software.
    Case1: You have 5508WLC
Solution from my side: You must buy a another WLC with HA SKU license(Zero AP license). This wlc can work as N+1 and AP SSO as well as Client SSO but with higher version of code(7.5 or higher).
    Case2: You have 2504 WLC
Solution: You must buy a another 2504 HA WLC: AIR-CT2504-HA-K9, that only supports N+1(No AP SSO and NO Client SSO)

  • Crap Throughput on MESH

Ok, so I have two WLC5508 controllers running 7.0.230.0, which having the two of them probably is inconsequential because all the APs are added to only one controller. The problem I'm facing is that I have several LAP1552E's deployed throughout my facility, and I have several that are doing Ethernet bridging to some Cisco switches using G0. In this, I have a PC at the end of one of these switches, and using Iperf and PingPlotter to get some metrics, and what I'm seeing is >400ms latency with <3 Mbit throughput to the PC. On the 802.11a radios I have 18 Mbit set as mandatory, with everything below disabled and everything above Supported, with all MCS indexes under 802.11n enabled. My channel is set to 161 with a 40 MHz channel-width, and a power of 3 configured.
So, riddle me this... After many days of trying different power settings, channel settings, and such, I can't get better results than above and my channel utilization stays > 75% at all times. I do have video cameras attached to the other bridges switches, and have video QoS set to Bronze and the cameras configured to ~ 1 Mbit bandwidth maximum. What the heck am I missing?
Also, average RAP-MAP distance is ~ 1100 ft and average MAP-MAP distance is 400 ft, with the longest RAP-MAP being 1400 ft and MAP-MAP distance being 875 ft.

I haven't gotten the sniffer installed yet, but I have a new piece to the puzzle. I have some 3502i and 3502e devices on a separate bridge group and switch infrastructure, and today I was doing some unrelated work which required me to enable Ethernet bridging on the indoor RAP and MAP. Can ya guess what happened? I had everyone around me immediately come out and tell me the wireless just ground to a halt.
So, I disabled Ethernet bridging and all was good again, so I broke out Iperf on my laptop connected wirelessly and wouldn't ya know it that as soon as I enabled Ethernet bridging my throughput went to crap. So, relating back to my crap throughput on the outdoor MESH, yep, you guessed it, Ethernet bridging is being used. I plan to confirm my results by turning off the Ethernet bridging on the outdoor MESH and see if my throughput comes back. Granted that doesn't address the high channel utilization, but I wonder what will happen to the throughput.
Earlier this year when I moved to our new WLC5508 and the new 1552e APs, I had a lengthy TAC case because Ethernet bridging was causing some issues thanks to VLAN 1, but that's another story.

  • Question about ISE guest user account self registration

    Dear Sir,
We will plan guest solution for my wireless network ( we have WLC5508 and 1142 access point ), our requirement is :
    1. guest user access to an wireless guest SSID, open browser, it will redirect to web-auth page.
    2. The web-auth page have a url and if user click the url, guest user then connect to another web page, guest user can input some information ( for examples : username, email, cell phone ,,, ) to create guest user account self. The expiration of the user account fix to one day.
    3. the username and random password created for the guest user then send by SMS or email to guest user.
    4. Guest user can use the username and password he received to login web-auth page to use guest wireless network
    5. User activity information ( user create, login/logout, expire time, user IP address ... ) should be log.
Please help to verify the ISE with base license can meet our requirement. ( especially item 2 & 3 )

  • Internet anchor redundancy

    Hi experts,
We have two main data centers. Currently we have two WLC4402 in the same data center as internet anchors for two different guest SSIDs. They are sitting on different DMZs.
We are planning to replace them with two WLC5508 and have guest internet redundancy as well.
May I please what would be the best option?
Currently there are three options in my mind.
Option 1, build a HA pair in the same data center with both guest SSIDs configured.
Option 2, put one WLC5508 in one data center and the other WLC5508 in the other data center. Each WLC5508 has both guest SSIDs configured.
Option 3, put both WLC5508 in the same data center but not HA pair. Each WLC5508 has both guest SSIDs configured.
    Your feedback will be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Cedar

Why do HA on Guest Anchors... to me I just don't see any benefit.... AP SSO doesn't work since AP's are not joined to these WLC.  Client SSO only seems to work on foreign WLC's.  Again, it's really up to you and if you plan on doing HA, make sure you stick with v7.4.110.0 which seems pretty stable.  Others are also running v7.5 and v7.6, but I haven't unless the customer requires certain features.
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • WLC 7.6.100 traps

    Hello Guyz,
I have recently upgraded to WLC 7.6.100 on WLC5508 and i am receiving the following trap messages often.
Cause=Indicates that while the radio state should be updated on controller, no reset should be reported. Status:NA
Any idea what would be the cause?
    thanks in advance.

Might be an issue with the code... that version wasn't great.  There is a new version which ifxes some major bugs.... v7.6.110.0.... this is what you should upgrade to.

  • WLC with differents admins

Is possible have 3 administrator in a WLC5508 , and each have access a configuration of the group of access-points?
    Sample:
    WLC5508 with 30 AP.
    Admin1: access configuration for 10 AP (AP1, AP2, .... AP10)
    Admin2: access configuration for 10 AP (AP11, AP12,... AP20)
    Admin3: access configuration for 10 AP (AP21, AP22, ... AP30)
Or is it possible with another product like WCS ou ACS?
    Thanks.

    Thanks dancampb.
I find a solution. The WCS has a feature called Virtual Domains for this separation,

  • Help required with WLC software upgrade

I have a customer with  WLC 4402 in use, running software version 7.0.98.0, and supporting 11 APs at present. The customer wants to enlarge the WLAN, which involves increasing the number of APs. I have purchased a new WLC5508, and have installed it onto the network alongside the 4402. the 5508 is running software version 7.0.116.0. Because the wireless network is critical to the user, we want to move the APs over to the new controller while the network is up and running, then remove the 4402.
However, when we set the 5508 as the master controller, or tell one of the APs to use the 5508 as its primary controller, the AP connects to the new controller, downloads the new software version, attempts to load it but reports an error with the unzipped file size of the software and fails to boot. formatting the flash on the AP, then disconnecting the 5508 from the network and rebooting the AP allows it to connect to the 4402, it downloads the older software and boots as normal. A new AP, if connected to the 5508 in a test scenario (ie no 4402) connects, downloads and boots perfectly.
I have the upgrade software to allow the 4402 to be upgraded to 7.0.116.0, but I am concerned that, if this is installed, the existing APs will then fail to boot from the 4402 or the 5508.
all APs are 3502s, running IOS version 12.04(23c)JA when connected to the 4402 and 12.04(23c)JA2 on the 5508.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received
    Thanks

    Hi Pat,
thanks for the reply. I am off site until the morning, but will attach the colsole output tomorrow.
Your mentioning a corrupt image makes me wonder - we had a lot of trouble setting up the initial config on the new WLC, getting a lot of launch failures. Eventually things seemed to settle down (it certainly booted successfully first time this morning) and getting an AP to connect without a problem made me hope it was just a quirk of the configuration wizard, but I think I will try a reboot of the WLC before I do anything else, just to check it is stable.
If it is a corrupt image it may take a little while to sort, as we have not as yet got a support contract on the 5508 - the plan was to upgrade the existing contract on the 4402 once they were swapped out, but I'll let you know whats going on

  • Does the WLC 5500 Series support LLDP?

We have 2 WLC 5508s running v7.0.98.0 and 70+ 1230, 1240, & 1250 series LWAPs.  We are currently enabling LLDP because we will be installing some non-Cisco switches in the near future.  Does the WLC5508 and the access points it controlls support LLDP?

    Hi David:
The Data Sheet for the 5500 series wireless LAN controllers is at
    http://tools.cisco.com/squish/b7D77
That data sheet does not currently list LLDP (as LLDP) or IEEE 802.11AB as supported protocols in the product as it sits today.
I would encourage you to contact your Cisco SE, Cisco account team or Cisco authorized wireless reseller, and let them know you think that this support would be valuable to the wireless LAN controllers.  The "sales side of the house" has procedures in place to gather and accumulate input from the customers they serve, and forward it to the respective business units within Cisco for possible inclusion in future releases of Cisco's products.

  • TCP/UDP ports between Cisco PI 2.0 and WLC5508

    Hello,
I will install Cisco PI 2.0 behind a firewall for security reason. The WLC5508 is before a firewall. Can anybody let me know which TCP/UDP ports need to be open specifically between the Cisco PI and WLC? I don't see that from the below link.

    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/net_mgmt/prime/infrastructure/2-0/quickstart/guide/cpi_qsg.html#wp46865

Firewall Between the WCS and Controller or WCS and the WCS User Interface
When a PI server and a PI user interface are on different sides of a firewall, they cannot communicate unless these ports on the firewall are open to two-way traffic:
    80 (for initial http)
    69 (tftp)
    162 (trap port)
    443 (https)
Open these ports in order to configure your firewall to allow communications between a PI server and a PI user interface.

  • Mesh and Flexconnect with WLC5508

    Hi Community.
A customer have a bad coverage in a corner of his branch office. He like to add a mesh AP (MAP) in the near of that corner.
I checked allready the documention about Mesh but i'm not sure if Flexconnect and Mesh works togheter. This MAP is in a branch office and the WLC is in the head quarter therefore he likes to uses Flexconnect togheter with Mesh.
    Best regards Patrick

Oaky, and if the AP is setup as RAP than other wireless clients cant connect to that AP anymore ?
I have to do Ethernet Bridging and give the Bridge Group a name, right? Set that on the MAP and the RAP.
I have to set the port on the switch where the RAP is connected to a trunk port, so all 3 WLANs (VLAN) can reach the switch over Wireless.
But how do i forward these 3 WLAN (VLAN) from the MAP to the RAP and finaly to the switch.

    Any ideas?

Fascinating just reading about your setup. I have a WRT350N and have noticed that it will drop its speed, sometimes down to 1Mbps. It seems to do so at about the same time every day, but usually comes back to speed in about 5 minutes. In my experience, the Apple TV will disconnect if the speed falls this low. Try monitoring the Linksys with Netstumbler, Vistumbler, or just in the Windows Network utility.
Check the "lease obtained" and "lease expired" times for your router to see if that is when the network fails. I've just finished reading an angry thread over at the Linksys forum about the WRT330N where someone mentioned that the router wasn't renewing its lease.
"I cannot set it run off automatic DHCP from the WRT330N, the router will not assign it an IP every time the lease expires, causing me to have to manually set an IP on the Print server. That's annoying. Having the router drop IP's to individual machines after 12-48 hours...very annoying."
    http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wireless_Routers&thread .id=67412
If that is the problem, then I would consider setting up a Static IP address for your Apple TV. You can do that through the user interface -> Settings -> Network -> Configure ... (Quite intuitive as you only have change IP address and the subsequent details remain the same.)
My router assigns IP Addresses in the ranges of 192.168.1.100 ->149. The idea here is to choose an address outside of that range but is not greater than 192.168.1.253 (and should not end in the number 1). You shouldn't have to change the linksys router as long as 50 clients are assigned in that range. You'll have to figure that out by accessing your router webpage at browser address 192.168.1.1 -> the default password is "admin" (without the quotes).
    Good luck.
