WLS 6.1 eval limitations
Can anyone tell me what the limitations are on the WebLogic Server 6.1
evaluation download. I can see from the website that it is limited to 30
days use - are there any other limitations regarding connections etc?
regards
Bill
In http://e-docs.bea.com/wls/docs61/install/instlic.html#1036124
it is stated:
"All WebLogic Server evaluation products are licensed for use on a single server machine and allow up to five connections to the server."
Are the BEA management console connections included in this "5 connection limit"?
If I´m using a web server to foward 2 requests, is this counted as one(both are coming from one IP) or as 2
Thanks in advance!

by the "units" in your license.bea file.
Usually, an evaluation license allows unlimited connections for 30 days. After
that you will have to contact your sales rep to get a development or production
license as best suits your needs.

WLS 6.0 Tru64 Unix eval ... broken zip ?
Hi bea,
could it be possible that the WLS 6.0 eval zip is broken ?
Apart from D:\weblogic\... within the path settings the whole directory
structure seems to be screwed. Could not see a common structure to all
other versions.
WLS version 5.1 for Unix does not have a valid license - ended around
March 8 - glad I have a very limited license because of my IDE.
Time to fix a few things ;) ...
Jens
BTW: This 6.0 zip contains "BEA WEBLOGIC SERVER 6.0 BETA" a lot ;)Hi.
Try posting your question on the plugin newsgroup -
weblogic.developer.interest.plugin
Thanks,
Michael

The below URL documentation says "We have included new versions of the plug-in
binaries that solve a Tru64 UNIX incompatability problem" and also talks about
mod_wl_ssl_v51.so but evaluation copy of WLS 6.0 doesn't have those files, only
has mod_wl_40F.so mod_wl_50.so mod_wl_51.so. How can I get the new versions of
the plug-in binaries???

Open source applications runnig on WLS
Does anyone know or have statistics of any OS or GNU busniess type applications (sorry I know this not a good description) that run or are running WLS.
I am participating in a building management system XiBMS application that runs on Jboss. I would consider altering the build process to make a version to run on WLS but would the developers contributing to the project be expected to shell out for licenses? If I remember correctly WLS comes with a limited developer license (limit on number of connections) but is there anything else I should be aware of?I don't really understand your first question, but you might want to look at Beehive (http://incubator.apache.org/beehive). It is an Apache project that runs on WebLogic (as well as other servers), although it is a framework (not sure if that qualifies as a "business type application")
Yes. Development licenses are free (with the restrictions you are aware of). You can even download the BEA Platform for development purposes at http://www.freetodevelop.com
You only have to pay for deployment licenses. -

Over the last couple weeks I've been tasked with evaluating the Labview environment and coming up with a recommendation as to whether I think our company could benefit from buying a license or two. In that time I've developed a couple standalone executable vi's that have proved useful for some of the environmental testing we're doing here in the lab. These executables will likely remain useful in further revisions of the product being developed, so naturally my question is:
Once my evaluation copy expires, will my executables continue to run?
I assume they will, but I thought it would be better to be safe and ask anyways.
There you go, simple question, hopefully simple answer.
Thanks!Hey Alex,
You should be good to go with the exes you build with your eval version. We don't place any timing restrictions on built executables. For more information on eval limitations see What Limitations Does the LabVIEW Evaluation Version Have?
Thanks!!!!

C++ IIOP client implications
I have some general questions regarding a C++ CORBA iiop client to WLS6.1
(using any orb, but in particular using the tux orb):
What are the implications of a CORBA C++ client to EJBs hosted on WLS. What
particular limitations exist (theoretical or practical) in terms of
parameter types for method invocations - in particular non-primitive
parameters?
To clarify:
Largely, OBV in a C++/EJB environment means that you have to provide a C++
implementation of any OBV classes that are passed to, or returned from, an
EJB interface (as well as the standard interfaces/exceptions, etc).
In a java-java environment, it is perfectly normal that you would want to
pass some Bulk Accessor (or Value Object - dont like that name). These could
be of the form of HashMaps or ArrayLists etc, or may be a simple struct-like
class. There may even be more complicated classes with embedded logic - but
we will ignore these for the time being.
My questions are:
1) How do we write simple struct-like classes - what rules do we need to
follow? Are there interfaces to implement that would take advantage of CORBA
marshalling instead of object serialisation (interesting, but not that
important)?
2) Do we need to provide our own C++ implementations of standard containers
as HashMap or ArrayList? Do BEA provide a library of such "standard" class
implementations?
3) If the interface returns an ArrayList (or any Collection class) of custom
Data Objects, ala:
public List getLoadsOfStuff() {
ArrayList stuff = new ArrayList();
stuff.add(new MyBulkAccessor("milk", "biscuits", 12));
return stuff;
how is the ejbc tool aware that there is a class "MyBulkAccessor" that
requires IDL generated? (this also has implications in a java-java world
when using ejbc's client-jar generation)
4) Are there C++ implementations of other javax classes such as the
javax.ejb.Handle etc? Do developers need to provide implementations of these
objects?
Thanks.
NickCheers, Thanks.

be of the form of HashMaps or ArrayLists etc, or may be a simplestruct-like
class. There may even be more complicated classes with embedded logic -but
we will ignore these for the time being.There are virtually no physical limitations to the passing of
valuetypes to and from WLS from a C++ client. The limitations are
more, as you have noticed, the complexity of the implementation. The
only real limitation is where objects have names that cannot be
disambiguated using the mangling rules of the Java to IDL spec. This
generally only happens if you design things to break these rules
(i.e. almost never).
In terms of the complexity issue, the real problem is custom
valuetypes. Objects that generate stanadard valuetypes (and that means
things that are simply serializable) are reasonably easy to manipulate
and moreover Tuxedo will generate default implementations for these
using the -i flag. This is another advantage in using the Tuxedo C++
client orb rather than Visibroker, say. The generated default
implementations are usually sufficient for most uses. Note also that
WLS does not generate functions for valuetypes, we only spit out the
data. There are good reasons for doing this, but a side effect is that
the implementation of valuetypes in C++ is made much easier. If you
look in the iiop examples in WLS 6.1 you will see that we have also
demonstrated how to extend a valuetype implementation with
functionality that makes it look like its java counterpart.
But back to custom valuetypes. Java objects that have custom
marshalling (i.e. define writeObject or are externalizable), require
custom valuetype implementations in C++. This makes the C++
implementation much more complex since you have to write the
marshalling code for the valuetype implementations yourself. In the
WLS examples the iiop entity example shows this for ArrayList. On the
plus side you only have to do this once, so you could build up a
library of custom marshaled valuetype implementations. On the minus
side, there is no guarantee that the Java marshaling will not change
(as it did for ArrayList between JDK 1.30 and JDK 1.3.1).
My questions are:
1) How do we write simple struct-like classes - what rules do we need to
follow? Are there interfaces to implement that would take advantage of
CORBA
marshalling instead of object serialisation (interesting, but not that
important)?My advice would be to make sure the java objects you use are simply
serializable, i.e. avoid the custom marshalling problem. Then add any
helper functions you require in the C++ implementation.
2) Do we need to provide our own C++ implementations of standard
containers
as HashMap or ArrayList? Do BEA provide a library of such "standard"class
implementations?You would if you wanted to use these data items. We do not provide
standard implementations of these - although there is an example for
ArrayList in the iiop examples.
3) If the interface returns an ArrayList (or any Collection class) of
custom
Data Objects, ala:
public List getLoadsOfStuff() {
ArrayList stuff = new ArrayList();
stuff.add(new MyBulkAccessor("milk", "biscuits", 12));
return stuff;
how is the ejbc tool aware that there is a class "MyBulkAccessor" that
requires IDL generated? (this also has implications in a java-java world
when using ejbc's client-jar generation)ejbc is not aware. We have modified rmic to allow generation of IDL
for all java classes. So in this case you would have to do:
rmic -idl java.util.ArrayList
to make sure you had the appropriate IDL.
4) Are there C++ implementations of other javax classes such as the
javax.ejb.Handle etc? Do developers need to provide implementations of
these
objects?We haven't provided any implementations of these. We have, however, in
6.1 tried to make sure that the common java types used by EJBs are
simply serializable (including handles and enumerations) so that they
are at least useable from C++.

OSR 10.3 server drops into ADMIN mode
Using WL 10.3, jrockit_160_05 on RH on a 2 node cluster with the registry.war deployed to a single server within the cluster.

Has anyone seen this behavior?I second hisaaks and mmeyers opinion.
It is much discussed but documented and widely known (and though often thought to be not necessary) prequisite for OSB clustering. Compared to WLS clustering there some limitations.
You can only have one cluster in a OSB domain, if there is more than one maneged servers you have to put them in a cluster.
Like it or not, the product requires it. IMHO it is acceptable. My guess is that one reason for it are the uniformely distributed queues used within OSB.
IMHO the real problems start, when you think about extending the cluster after creating the domain, then you have to manually set all these queues and distributed queues and JMS modules and everything that gets typically targetted for you by the domain wizzard. Or is there a solution for it yet? (Sorry to hijack your thread).

Where is bin direcotry in eval version of WLS 6.1 sp 4
I just downloaded a copy of the eval version of WLS 6.1 sp 4 because I want

the bin directory is missing. I am also interested in looking into
clustering with iis. Without the bin directory, I don't have the

Limiting WLS to a single processor on a multi-CPU machine
How can I configure WLS to only use a single processor on a multiprocessor
machine? Will launching with green threads do the trick? Is there some way
to permit the use of native threads but to exclude a set of processors?
How do I do this under WLS318? WLS451?
Any help is much appreciated.

I'm running a WLS 6.0 SP2 clustered application on HP-UX 11i. I'm seeing heap and
thread issues on start-up or invocation of my application as I deploy EJB's and create
DB connection pools. These are fairly trivial tasks that don't give me any issues
when starting the first node. It's only when I invoke the second node.
I'm pretty sure that my issue is tied to the following kernel areas:
1. Thread allocation
2. Heap allocation
3. Max Processes per user
Can anyone make some kernel recommendations that might be beneficial to my deployment?
My app runs on NT/2000 and Sun as well, and I haven't seen these issues. I typically
allocate 50 to 100 threads per node (3 nodes on a 4 CPU machine) and allocate about
1GB of RAM per node on a 4GB machine...

Steve

HP has some kernel tuning guidelines for Java server apps on their web site,
and BEA has some notes as well in their platform support page.
What issues specifically are you seeing?

Topic consumer does not show up in destination after WLS restart
Hello JMS cracks
<p>We have following setup: <br>
- 1 Admin and 2 Managed WLS 8.1 SP4 on same host:<br>
- distributed topic destination<br>
- external jms topic subscriber client (using weblogic.jar)
</p>
<p>
The client subscribes to the topic in the following way:
<p>
TopicConnectionFactory fact = (TopicConnectionFactory) ctx.lookup("factName");<br>
TopicConnection tcon = fact.createTopicConnection();<br>
tcon.setExceptionListener(exceptionListener); <br>
TopicSession tsession = tcon.createTopicSession(false, Session.AUTO_ACKNOWLEDGE);<br>
Topic topic = (Topic) ctx.lookup("logicNameOfDistributedTopic");<br>
TopicSubscriber treceiver = tsession.createSubscriber(topic,selector,false);<br>
treceiver.setMessageListener(messageListener);
</p>
<p>
Test scenario: <br>
- start admin WLS and both managed WLS with URLs t3://host1:27100 and t3://host1:27200, respectively<br>
<br>
- start client with URL t3://host1:27100<br>
=> client receives messages :-)<br>
<br>
- kill client and start client again with URL t3://host1:27200<br>
=> client receives messages :-)<br>
<br>
- kill client and start client again with URL t3://host1:27100,host1:27200<br>
=> client receives messages :-)<br>
<br>
- kill WLS instance, e.g. t3://host1:27100<br>
=> Two possibilies: <br>
1) the client was connected to t3://host1:27100 and it has not to reconnect; it still receives messages :-) (however, an internal tester told me, that it also may stop receiving messages :-(<br>
<br>
2) client receives an Exception and reconnects to t3://host1:27200 (exceptionListener). It <b>may or may not receive messages</b> :-( <br>
<br>
- start WLS instance t3://host1:27100 again<br>
- kill client which is connected to t3://host1:27200 and start client with URL t3://host1:27100<br>
=> client connects to t3://host1:27100, but it <b>may or may not receive messages</b> :-( <br>
<br>
- kill client which is connected to t3://host1:27100 and start client with URL t3://host1:27200<br>
=> client connects to t3://host1:27200, but it <b>may or may not receive messages</b> :-( <br>
</p>
<p>
Going to the Weblogic console <myClusterDomain> > JMS Servers> <my JMS Server on t3://host1:27200> Active JMS Destinations one can see that the topic subscriber may or may not be added to the consumer count. If it is not added, the client does not receive any messages and vice versa.
</p>
<p>
This is very very annoying.
</p>
<p>
Please, can somebody tell me what can lead to this behaviour? Is something wrong with the configuration (if yes which parameter have I to adjust)? Is this just a timeing problem? Is there a workaround? Or is this normal (I hope not)?
</p>
<p>
Thanks very much for your help.
</p>

Peter

"Eval Parsed Formula Node VI" does not return outputs in predefined order
I make a data analysis program, where the data consists of some million events and each event has e.g. 4 channels and 1-5 hits on each channel.
I would like the user to select different expressions of these channels to give coordinates to plot in a 2D histogram (increment a bin in Intensity Graph), e.g. for some experiment you want to show x=ch1-ch2; y=ch1+ch2+ch3+ch4; while in another experiment you want x=ch1-123; y=123-ch2;
There are other VIs that use static LabView-code for the normal things, but now after a few years of adding to this program I find that it would be quite good with a general plotter and let the user specify simple expressions like this. Also with the "normal" static plots, there is a need to filter out bad data and then it would be much simpler both to program and use if you could write text expressions with boolean logic to combine multiple filters. Making a LabView code and GUI that allows AND/OR/parenthesis combinations of expressions will be quite an effort and not very reusable.
So, with the above motivation, I hope you see that it would make sense to have a useable string formula evaluator in LabView. I find some info about MathScript's user-defineable functions, but haven't managed to get MathScript working in LV2010 yet (maybe some licensing or installation issues, I think I had it in 8.6). But I think it would be possible to do most of what I want for the display-part (not the filtering) with the simpler Eval/Parse Formula Node VIs and suitable use of the limited variable name space. So I started testing, and found a quite annoying issue with how the evaulator works.
To the parser, you are expected to send an array of output variable names. But then it ignores this array, and returns one output per assignment/semicolon in the formula, in the order of the formula text. Since the static parts of my program need to know what the output values mean (which of them is x and which is y), I would have to rely on the user not using any intermediate variable and defining x before y. The attached screenshot demonstrates the problem, and also that it has been solved by NI statff in the "Eval Formula Node VI" which does the appropriate array-searching to extract only the pre-defined outputs, in their expected order. But using that VI is about 100 times as slow, I need to pre-compile the formula and then only use the evaulator in the loop that runs over a million events.
I don't know if I'll take the time to make my own tweks to the parsing stage (e.g. preparation of array-mapping to not have to repeat the search or maybe hacking the output list generated by the parser) or if I'll have to make it in a static Formula Node in the block-diagram (which supports more functions), so that the user has to run with development environment and stop the program to change the plotting function. But I wanted to share this trouble with you, in hope of improvments in future LabView versions or ideas from other people on how I could accomplish my aim. I have MATLAB-formula node possibility too, but is far as I have seen the only place the user could update the formula would then be in a separate .m file, which is re-read only when typing "clear functions" in the Matlab console window. (Having this window is also an annoyance, and perhaps the performance of calling Matlab in every iteration is not great.)
Besides this issue, it also seems very strange there is virtually no support for conditional expressions or operators in Formula Node evaulated formulas (called Mathematics VIs in the documentation). Maybe using (1+sign(a-b))/2 you can build something that is 0 when a<b and 1 when a>b, but it is not user friendly! Would it really be diffcult to add a function like iif(condition, return_value_if_true, return_value_if_false) to replace the unsupported "condition ? if_true : if_false" operator? Would it really be difficult to add support for the < <= >= > == || && operators? Although compiled to an assemply language, this can't exactly be difficult for a CPU.

LV script test.vi 18 KB(1) You can put any kind of code inside an event structure with the limitation that it should be able to complete quickly and without user interaction. For example a while loop for a newton-raphson method is fine, but an interactive while loop where the stop condition depends on user iteraction is not recommended. By default, event structures lock the front panel until the event completes, so you would not even be able to stop it.
(2) Yes, you can do all that. LabVIEW has no limitation as a programming language. Use shift registers to hold data and state information, the manipulate the contents as needed.
(3) I would recommend to use plain LabVIEW primitives instead of formula nodes. Show us your code so we can better see what it's all about. Obviously you have a mismatch betweeen scalars and arrays. It is impossible from the given information where the problem is.
(4) Yes, look inside the nonlinear curve fit VI (you can open it an inspect the code!). One of the subVIs does exactly that. Just supply your model VI.
