WMA Lossless - AAC - 128br

I have most of my music in WMA lossless and am thinking of converting to AAC so I can use iTunes, if I convert to AAC will the option to 'Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 Kbps AAC' only affect the songs on the ipod? i.e. not the whole library.
If so, what happens to the original file in the library, especially when that file is replaced or removed from the iPod -- is it a separate on the fly operation? I hope so.

An iPhone will, though it's not certain, most likely function like an iPod nano. So the format of the tracks in iTunes is what will be transferred to the iPhone; it's doubtful (though not impossible) that there will be an on-the-fly conversion as is the case with an iPod shuffle.
But with WMA, iTunes can't play it. It converts it automatically on import (to whatever format is set in the iTunes Import settings, I believe). So you will not get uncompressed WMA on an iPhone (or iPod) regardless of the synchronization scheme.

  • I know how to convert WMA to AAC/MP3 for Itunes

I'm not sure if someone else has figured this out or not, but I figured out how to convert WMA files to AAC or MP3 for Itunes. First open the file using Quicktime. I think you need the Flip4Mac program. I'm not sure and you also need Quicktime pro. Choose Save. Select standalone movie. Choose location. It will convert song to movie, then import all your movies you selected. Organize Itunes by "Kind". Select all of your new movies files. Choose Advanced and convert to your appropriate file type.
I looked for a while and couldn't find a good way to change wma to aac. This takes a little bit, but it works. What do you think? It works for me.

Or, as has been pointed out in numerous posts, you can use EasyWMA.

  • How do I convert WMA lossless to apple lossless

I've recently switched from Windows and I have over 400 cd's ripped in WMA lossless format. Is there a program (free or reasonably priced commercial) that will run on the mac and batch convert these files without loosing tags or album art?  I used goldwave on my last PC to convert to MP3 however it didn't support apple lossless.
                                                                                                                                                                                             Thanks

I have had this same exact problem for about 4 years now.  I keep checking online every few months but never have any luck.  What gives?  Is there nobody out there that can program an application to transcode efficiently while maintaining metadata including album art?
I bought and owned over 1,000 cd's by 2003 when I decided to rip them all with WMP (Windows Media Player 9) on a PC into WMA Lossless without DRM (Digital Rights Management).  I used the slow but detailed error correction so it took a long time to complete this project.  Many of the CD's were from different countries (as I had been living in different countries) so some had different songs and album art than the US Versions.  As a response I had to continually over-ride the built in suggestions for metadata from WMP and had to manually type in song titles and search for album art online, then copy and paste it into the folder the files were in.  WMP would then import that file into the WMA metadata. It took a lot of evenings but it was worth it and I had the best music collection I knew of while traveling for another 5 years.   I was ahead of the curve as far as digital music went.
In 2008 I switched to a MacBook Pro and haven't had easy access to my music collection sense.  In 2011, I ripped another batch of about 150 new CD's I've bought into Apple Lossless but now have to keep 3x music collection folders.  1) WMA Lossless, 2) VBR MP3 (converted for itunes without art), and 3) Apple Lossless.   I have thought about switching back to a PC but I do like my mac so I'm stuck with no options.
There are very few applications that can transcode WMA Lossless to Apple Lossless, less that can do so without bloating the file size to almost double, and none that keep the size similar to WMA Lossless while maintaining the album art already saved in my music collection's folder hierarchy.  (To clarify itunes on mac doesn't, Flip4Mac doesn't help, Auditri does not, VLC does not, Song bird does not, Pro Audio Converter does not, easyWMA does not.  I've even installed VMware (virtual machine to run Windows on my mac) to try dbpoweramp and no luck.)  And with all these trials I've also noticed it takes just as long to transcode on my Intel i5 MBP as it did on my AMD Athalon XP PC in 2003.
I'm very confused so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can I quickly convert WMA to AAC?

I am converting wma to aac and i am having to convert one song at a time. Is there anyway to select and convert an entire cd without having to convert each individual song? This is beating me down...

Click on the first track in the list and then while holding down the shift key click on the last one. This will highlight the selection, go to Advanced>Convert selection to AAC and it will do them all in turn.

  • ITunes WMA lossless and compilation albums

I'm fairly new to apple stuff, so I thought using iTunes would be a breeze after WMP11. But iTunes is not very good; it wants to convert all my WMAs, can't convert lossless WMAs and keeps splitting up compilation albums like NOW 66. I only use iTunes to get music on to my daughters’ new 3 gen iPod Nano. I did think about getting the hudge capacity classic but I think not as iTunes has severely let me down. I only wish WMP11 could talk directly to the iPod!!

iTunes doesn't like WMA files, so it will try to convert them to AAC or MP3. The latter is best as you can still use them on WMA or iTunes.
As for compilations, if you highlight all of the Now66 tracks, right click and select "get info", you'll see down in the bottomleft a box saying "Compilations" - toggle that to yes and it'll show them all together.
    Hope this helps

  • Selecting Import Settings (MP3, Apple Lossless, AAC...): definitive guide?

Can anyone point me to a "definitive" article discussing the various choices importing CDs into iTunes? I'm looking for something that gives sound advice (pun intended!) on which format to use, laying out some sort of matrix that compares file size to sound "quality".
Apologies for posting what's been posted a gazillion times before, but my searches in the forum led me to lots of long threads, short on information).

Argelius, It is truly an area with thousands of opinions being expressed. Each of the formats represents some tradeoff of size, audio quality, and compatibility. If you have particular uses or preferences, that will influence your choice.
If you are interested in knowing what the commercial stores are doing, the iTunes Store uses AAC at 256 kb/s and amazon.com uses MP3 at 256 kb/s.
Across the total range of players, programs, and phones, MP3 is by far the most widely accepted.
Lossless formats are used by people whose ears, systems, and listening conditions will benefit from top-notch audio quality. Lossless formats are also used by those who plan to do further processing (e.g. remixing) of their music.

  • Wma to aac

Made the switch to mac and need to convert wma from media player to aac for itunes. Would it be better to use a third party software or just install itunes on my old pc, convert them there, then move them over? What I'm asking, is, do I lose anything or gain anything depending on which way I go?

    OK heres my official results.
The VBR files are slightly larger. However, there's a chime I notice in the background of one of the songs and it gets cut off faster on the non-VBR. The VBR file is indistinguishable from the WMA.
Though the WMAs are not professional quality (they are made from a friend's band) you can notice all the imperfections on both files. The 192VBR is indistinguishable for my ears and so it will be the format I choose. Even Apple believes in lossy formats just look at iTunes. (Granted its from a non-compressed source to begin with)
I've done to test with 2 different WMAs, one upbeat and the other slow. The results were the same. I also performed the test both on headphones and a surround sound unit.

  • .wma to .aac file conversion

I recently downloaded iTunes for use with my 2gb nano. When I add songs to my iTunes library from my music it converts all of my .wma's to .aac format and makes puts the new files in my music. Since I have a large quantity of .wma files this is using up too much disk space. Is there a better way to add the .wma files to iTunes?....or will I have to put up with the .aac files taking over my hardrive?
      Windows XP

THeres afew issues here going on, I'll cover the basics first.
iTunes does not support WMA, it will convert them instead so you can play them in itunes. Theres 2 main reasons for this 1 is WMA is a format made by microsoft, any player supporting the format has to pay microsoft whats called a royalty fee, apple is not about to do this because reason 2, apple has there own format with a royalty fee and thats AAC.
AAC is more compact than a MP3 but its not universally supported by software and devices like MP3 is. So you have to choose if you want to stay with AAC to save space on your PC or go with MP3 so you can have one format you can play in iTUnes, WMP and other programs/devices.
In iTUnes if you goto Edit>Preference>advanced tab>Import sub tab you can change it from AAC to MP3 so all WMA file you add are converted to MP3 (As well as all future songs you add, like from CDs).
All WMA files that are converted will make 2 copies. iTUnes will leave the original WMA file on the PC and put the COPY of the converted file (Be it AAC or MP3) In My Music>iTUnes>iTUnes music folder. SO once converted you might want to delete the wma files or take them off the PC and put them on a backup disc if you wish to save on harddrive space

  • File converter found for wma to aac

I posted earlier about getting my previously purchased (protected .wma files) synced on my iPod.
I found a file converter for $14.95 that is so far working for me!
It's called Sound Taxi. Basically it converts several formats to mp3, and does some other file conversion as well that you might find useful.
    soundtaxi.info is their website.
I found it useful, anyway. I tried it out on one protected .wma, and it worked just fine.
It is kind of slow, but it's better than burning cd's back from my hard drive, or finding all the original cd's...
    Hope it helps someone!

  • Importing and converting WMA to AAC error

I am trying to convert my music files and import to itunes.
When I attempt to bulk transfer I get an error with one track and the entire process stops. When I retry that track individually it does not produce an error.
Why does itunes stop the entire process for the one track that produced the error. Can I somehow reconfigure itunes to skip tracks with errors and continue converting and importing the rest of the tracks. It has become a timely process but it is going to get much worse if I have to do each track individually.
If Windows media player encounters a problem it skips the track and contiues with the remaining tracks.
Not a glowing start for my apple experience.
Thanks in advance for any help that is given

  • WMA lossles to Apple Lossless

I have the same problem and the wish like this guy:
"I’ve also been migrating of my music library from WMV Lossless to AAC Lossless.
I initially tried to drag a big folder full of nested album folders containing WMV Lossless media from a networked drive (SMB) over to iTunes on the Mac, but it did… absolutely nothing. So now, my $700 Dell is cranking away at 95% CPU on both cores, converting a list of more than 5,000 songs, many of which are long, classical tracks. It is maintaining a conversion rate of 11.8x, which Victor says is pretty fast.
At 3am this morning, iTunes had converted more than 3,000 songs in 26 hours when Windows forced a reboot due to software updates. ARGH! So I had to dig around to find the 2,000 songs hadn’t been converted yet and drag them over again. Needless to say, I have disabled Automatic Updates.
Keeping both lossless and compressed versions of music is not easy. I was telling Victor last night that I wished iTunes supported “stacking” of music not unlike what Aperture does with photos. My main music library should be able to track compressed versions alongside lossless versions, or at the very least, have an option to auto-compress when sharing music or transferring music to portable devices (like what iTunes does when you attach a Shuffle). What I want to do is to have access to my lossless media at home and my compressed music on the road."

is there any hope to have this features ???
I need something like this too
    Thank you

Thanks Bottlerboi - a useful distinction between lossless compression for space saving, and lossy compression. I am partly interested in this because of my general interest in hi-fi, and Naim Audio in particular. Naim are just launching a new product which is essentially a CD player with 2 hard drives (albeit one is a back up of the other). The Naim HDX is said to store approximately 600 albums on 400Gb hard drives while making bit-for-bit copies, which I assume from what you have said, to be in WAV format (clearly even Apple Lossless would be many more albums than this). A great piece of kit until they tell you it costs £4,500 sterling...

  • Do I need a program to convert wma to itunes (aac?)-or can iTunes do it?

I have a lot of music that doesn't even show in the music folder of my iTunes library, and the program wont let me import them to convert within iTunes. do I need an independent program, or is there a trick to bring them into iTunes, and then convert? So far, under either 'import' or 'add to library', if its wma, iTunes just ignores the attempt to get the songs into the program.....
    Thanks,

    go to http://crunchgear.com/2007/06/20/musicgiants-wma-lossless-music-drm-free/
and read about WMA lossless format! (there is actually Super HD at 11,000 bitrate).
    it begins:
MusicGiants isn’t the most well-known online music download service out there, but they’ve been pumping out WMA Lossless files since 2005. Until a couple weeks ago, all of the super hi-res files were locked down with Windows Media DRM, but no more! Right now you can only get Paul McCartney’s Memory Almost Full DRM-free in truly bit-for-bit identical quality to a CD, but by this fall, MusicGiants will release lots more titles that you can pirate share at will. (The company hasn’t done an official press release yet, but MusicGiants CEO Scott Bahneman recently spilled the beans to Stereophile.)
It sure makes the iTunes Music Store’s 256Kbps AAC files look pretty wimpy, and it even trumps 7 Digital’s DRM-less 320Kbps MP3s. Will you hear the difference? If you have a super hi-fi audio rig at home then it’s a good bet you will. If you have an iPod, then no, because the iPod can’t hang with any WMA format.
That officially makes MusicGiants’ files the highest-resolution DRM-less downloads around. Which begs the question: When will Steve Jobs let us download Apple Lossless files on the iTMS? Another question: When will more portable players support WMA Lossless?

  • I want to convert the other way - AAC file to WMA

I saw some posts on converting WMA to AAC, but I want to go from AAC to WMA so I can stream music on my Xbox 360, which does not support AAC files. How do I put my itunes library into windows media player?
    Dell   Windows XP

You can't convert to WMA with iTunes. I'd be surprised if the software can't read mp3 files. iTunes can convert to that. Otherwise there are free format converters out on the web. The suite from http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/ is handy and includes an audio convertor. There is no need to install their toolbar or any other 3rd party software that gets offered.

  • Can I add a lossless file to my itunes library?

Can i add a lossless music file to my itunes library? Usually what i do is drag the file or folder into music/itunes/itunes media/automatically add to itunes and it works fine, everything shows in my library and plays perfectly. But with this lossless file i drag it into the automatically add to itunes folder and it goes into the folder but doesnt show up in itunes. I think i know that itunes doesn't support lossless files, so can somene tell me how to convert them into apple lossless or MP3s (preferably apple lossless). Please help.

The are a variety of different lossless audio formats, some supported by iTunes, some partially supported and some not at all.
The best lossless audio format to use from an iTunes point of view is Apple Lossless aka. ALAC. iTunes can import (rip) audio CDs using this format. Other lossless formats supported by iTunes include WAV (partially) and AIFF, however these formats use more disk space than Apple Lossless and do not sound any better, and further more do not support meta-tags as well as Apple Lossless.
Another lossless format you may hear of is FLAC, iTunes does not support this format but it can be otherwise considered equivalent to Apple Lossless in file size and capability. You can convert FLAC to Apple Lossless with of course no loss of quality but you will need to use another utility to do the conversion.
There is also WMA Lossless, this is not supported for playing by iTunes but I believe can be imported (only in iTunes for Windows, not Mac).
So, contrary to your message, yes iTunes does support lossless audio files.
For what its worth I have all mine in Apple Lossless and share it with Windows Media Player and Microsoft Media Center which can also play Apple Lossless (with an additional free directshow filter).
Note: Music purchased from the iTunes store will all be in AAC format which is a lossey format.

  • Creative ZEN 8GB + WMA Lossl

my creative zen player WAS up to date with the latest firmware (before v .2.0). as a test, i tried a WMA Lossless file (COldplay - Clocks) as well as an uncompressed WAV file. anyway, the WAV file didn't even show up in the browser, but the WMA Lossless file managed to play despite the "Having difficulties playing this file" error appearing over the timer. i was genuinly stunned, as i had read everywhere on this board that it wouldn't play.
anyway, i stupidly updated my firmware to the latest one, and found that it now COULDN'T play WMA Lossless files. so i downgraded the firmware to what i thought was the previous version, and now i can't play WMA Lossless files at all.
so now i'm stuck at what to do, i was about to rip my favourite CD's as lossless, but now i can't *sob*
has this happened to anyone else?

When I connect the Zen, that is where the change happens in the Device Manager trees. It is not recognised as Creative Zen, Portable Device or even a device with a yellow exclamation triangle.
In other words, when I plug in the player, that is how it is represented in the Device Manager trees. As an Unknown Device in the USB controller section.
For your information I have tried this player on 3 other systems.
    Laptop A with Win XP/Service Pack 3/WMP
    Laptop B with Win XP/Service Pack 3/WMP 0
    Laptop C with Windows 7
    RESULT IS ALWAYS SAME.
    UNKNOWN DEVICE!
The player works fine in and of itself and charges normally when plugged.
Please confirm what are the system requirements for Firmware Version: .20.02e which is the currently installed version on my Creative Zen 8GB
