WMA to MP3 Help

Hey All + Apple,
I have in excess of 1000 songs still in .wma format from my Windows days. I crossed over to the dark side and now realize that my Mac wont automatically convert my wma songs like the Windows version of iTunes. Is this something being worked on by Apple? Is there an efficient fix that doesnt include using a converter to convert each individual song?

Apple does not post here.
Even if Apple was working on something to convert from WMA (& I highly doubt they are) they would not post details here.
You can use -> Switch to batch convert files.
Is there some reason you want to convert to MP3 as opposed to AAC?

  • Overdrive app Library changes wma to mp3 format help please

I have iPod 5, iPad 4 and iPhone 5. I use Overdrive app to download Library ebooks and audiobooks.  Overdrive has changed from wma format to mp3 format.  Can anyone tell me how to do this? Thank you

I am confused. You say OverDrive change the format from WMA to mp3. But then you ask how to do that?
Do what since you said OverDrive did that?
The iPod can't play WMA files. They have to be converted to a format compatible with the iPod.
    Itunes Help includes:
Add items from your computer to your iTunes library
    Do either of the following:
Drag a file or folder from the desktop to the iTunes window. If you add a folder, all the files it contains are added to your library.
In iTunes, choose File > Add to Library, locate a file or folder, and click Open.
By default, adding items to your iTunes library places a pointer to each file in the iTunes folder; the original file remains in the current location. For information about copying files to the iTunes folder instead of creating pointers to them, see Change where your iTunes files are stored. If the file is an unprotected WMA file and you have Windows Media Player Series 9 or later installed, iTunes makes a copy of the file and adds it to your iTunes library. The original WMA file remains unchanged. You can’t add protected WMA files or protected WMV files to iTunes.
You can also get computer apps to do the conversion

  • Best WMA to MP3 batch converter for MacBook Pro

Half of the music that I've collected over the years, and now transferred onto my new MacBook Pro, is in the WMA format.
I am looking for a program that can batch convert ALL of these files to MP3, putting the MP3s in the same folders as the WMA files currently are, and then I will delete the WMA files.
Is there any program that can help me with this? At the moment I can only listen to half of my songs in iTunes!
    Many thanks

EasyWMA is a popular one for the Mac.  Switch can also do it.
Or, if you happen to have access to a PC, iTunes for Windows can convert WMA to MP3, after which you can bring the MP3 files to your Mac on a flash drive..
then I will delete the WMA files.
    It's about time.
Steve - one additional note:  Make sure your files are normal unprotected WMA files, since protected WMA cannot be converted.  Protected WMAs could have happened if you ever ripped a CD using the default settings of Windows Media Player, or if you ever bought tracks from one of the many (now-defunct) online stores that sold songs in protected WMA format.

  • WMA v MP3 format - advice please

WMA v MP3 format - advice pleaseT I have a Zen Vision M and previously had a Zen Touch.
I have always used WMA format when ripping CD's as it is the default setting in Media Player, which is my preferred program. The rest of my family have gone over to the "dark side" (!)?and have iPod's and the iPlayer uses MP3 format as its default. My husband who used to have a Zen Touch, is very smug about how much less space what used to almost fill his Zen now takes in his?iPod.
So, I now have very little room left on my 60 GB and was wondering about converting everything into MP3 format to make more space, but seem to remember being told?once about MP3 format being poorer quality?
I'd be grateful for any comments/advice on the following:
    - Is converting everything worth the effort and will it actually take less space?
    - Is MP3 better/worse quality, is there any difference anymore?
    - Are MP3 files ok on the Zen?
    - I understand I'll need conversion software - any recommendations?
    Thank you for your help!

This has been a "raging" discussion for years and years! Here's my take (long time digital music user):
WMA is far better for low bitrate (under 28kbs). 28 kbs is nowhere near "cd quality" in ANY format (wma, mp3, acc). 92kbs is good quality in all formats. Audiophiles (picky listeners) will insist on Ogg Vorbis (?), Lossless wma, etc. files no matter what. I can't tell the difference between aac, wma or mp3 at 92kbs or above. I listen to compressed files on a portable player or in a car (or worse...on a motorcycle). The background noise is usually enough and earphones/speakers poor enough that it really does not make a huge difference what format (or often what bitrate) you use in these instances.
Here's what I've been doing; rip to mp3 92kbs VBR--good quality, reasonable file size. Transfer to my Zen(s) using WMP. I set the player options to re-code files to 64kbs wma files for the Zen(s). Max number of songs that way, small file size, good battery life (wma uses more power than mp3 AT THE SAME BITRATE--but at 64kbs is uses LESS power than a higher bitrate mp3--you'll notice longer battery life).
Many may cringe at my 64kbs wma choice (except Microsoft, who claim this sounds "cd quality" ---NOT). For me, it sounds good enough for a portable copy, but NOT my main copy. WMP will automatically recode these for you on the fly and not clutter up your hard dri've with multiple copies of the same song. It also only puts the 64kps file on your Zen and leaves the better copy (in my case, my 92kbs mp3 file) intact. I now rip to mp3 because it is the defacto default format for everything.
This is just what I've been doing. I tried a lot of different things before, but my latest system seems to work fine.
Note: Most of the new "DRM Free" mp3 downloads are 256kbs mp3. They sound great. Honestly, I cannot tell the difference in nearly all cases from a 92kbs mp3 file, but on a good stereo I'm sure there are those who can. I really never listen to mp3 files? on my good stereo. I have REAL cds (and even a bunch of "super audio cds" ) for that.

  • Wma to mp3 converter

I downloaded a conversion program "wma to mp3 converter" to be able to listen to wma music files in my computer. However when I click on the file, just the programmers' codes appear, nothing else. How can I activate the converter program? That is, how can I see the converter's window so that I can drag my wma files into it for conversion into mp3 format? Thanks

is that an app that can run on a Mac ?
How can I activate the converter program?
did you contact the developer ?
if you can't get it going, consider getting EasyWMA instead.

  • Keep my albums after converting WMA to MP3

First I apologize if there are have been similar questions. I tried to search for this.
I have several wma from my old PC. I would like to organize and use through itunes. So I have used a free program called "Switch" to convert my WMA to MP3.
On the PC, they were automatically organized by album and included the artwork - when I ripped my cd's.
However, after I converted an album, and imported to iTunes, all I got were the MP3's. They don't organize by album or even have the artwork.
Is there any way to do this? Is it my converting software that's not doing the job? Is it iTunes? Or do I have to do this?
    Thanks!

  • Converting WMA to MP3:  Controlling When Conversion Takes Place?

    Hello. I have a 4GB Nano.
When I load a few WMA files into the iTunes software library, I am immediately asked whether to convert them, or skip them. I choose Convert.
However, I noticed I cannot load additional WMA files during the conversion process. I have to wait until the process is complete before loading more files.
I'd like to know if there is a way to configure iTunes so I can fully load all of my WMA files into the library at once, instead of a few at a time, and choose when I want the conversion to take place.
This isn't an absolutely critical question, because I have db Power Amp and can convert files from WMA to MP3 at my leisure. I just want to know if iTunes can be controlled in this way.
    Thank you!
    Jd

iTunes cannot use wma files so it needs to convert them.
They will not get added to iTunes until they are converted so you cannot choose to convert them later.
I noticed I cannot load additional WMA files during the conversion process. I have to wait until the process is complete before loading more files.
Why not add them all at once?
File -> *Add folder to library* and pick the top level folder where the wma files are.

  • Mass convert WMA to MP3

I have 2600 songs on my hard drive. They are all WMA. I would like to use iTunes, but would like to convert all my music to MP3 to play in iTunes (and transfer with iPod). Can iTunes do this, or will I have to do it the hard way?
    Thanks

I have the files on my external HD as well (as backup). So I can set iTunes to read from that Music folder and point to a new itunes folder, and set the advanced settings to convert to MP3. So then I'd have a mirror (sorta) between my WMA and MP3 folders (with exception of DRM stuff).

If the music was just purchased on the iPod from iTunes Store, then sync with iTunes. You will be prompted to transfer purchased items to iTunes. You can also re-download prior purchases directly in iTunes: Download past purchases.
Otherwise, you will need a third-party utility for the chore such as Pod To Mac or Pod To PC.

Bckground info - compaq presario laptop (3-4 years old)
Problem experienced -  is trying to convert WMA to MP3 files to transfer to flash drive for use through he usb port in my audio amp. • WMA to mp3 conversion

Hey guys, I just got 3 cd length worth of songs from my friend today, and there all in WMA format, is there anyway I can convert these files using iTunes? I also found easyWMA what do you guys think of that program?
    Message was edited by: Finalblink

If you have a friend with a Windows machine, note that iTunes for Windows can automatically convert WMAs to the indicated import format. Put your WMAs there with a flash drive (memory stick), convert them, and then put the converted files on your flash drive and take them back to your Mac, where you can add them to your iTunes library.
If you don't have a memory stick, borrow that too! Your project can be done at no cost with a little help from your friends.

  • Precise bitrate of an mp3, Help required Please?

    Hello all
i ve recently downloaded the trial of adobe audition on a firends reccomendation
basically i have an mp3 here which is listed as a 192 now this is a podcast recording of a dj mix, but im certain the quality of this file isnt a 192 it sounds like a 96kbps to be honest
i read somewhere a long time ago, that you can drop the mp3 into auditon and even though it is listed as a 192 in winamp/wmp etc audioin should give me the exact bitrare, regardless of what it listed as, (e.g was this a 96 and someone has conveted it to 192?)
can anyone help me with this, how can i find/check this out in audition?
    regards
    thanks

If the quality of the source is lower than the quality that a particular format setting will support, then it won't sound as good as that, regardless. I don't know where you got the idea that Audition can, as if by magic, determine the previous bit rate of a re-encoded file but I can assure you that no software can do that, because that information simply isn't stored in the metadata.
Not only that, but if you open an MP3 file in Audition, it's automatically converted to a wav file anyway. That's Audition's internal format, and the only way it's possible to open an MP3 in it. And if you resave it as an MP3, even at the same bitrate, it will be of lower quality - simply because it's been decoded and re-encoded and this isn't a lossless process. If you saved it as a higher bit rate file, then you'd still have the audio at the original decoded quality.
Yet another problem is that you have no information at all about the original mix, or what its source files are, so even if it was recorded at a higher bit rate originally, it could still easily be flawed. For instance, if the mix was based on 128k MP3s to start with, and then podcast, re-recorded and re-opened, it would have been decoded enough times to have deteriorated significantly anyway.
