WMA (Windows Media) files not being stored in a blob

Running APEX 3.2.1.00
Oracle 11g (I think)
Running IE7
I have a simple application for users to store files (upload a blob file type). With .WAV files, it works wonderfully. Users can upload the audio file and play it back as a mime type through Windows Media Player.
However, the digital audio recorders the users are using store the file as a .WMA. THis file uploads correctly. It is identified as a "audio/x-ms-wma", file name "WS400113.WMA". But when I try to download it, I get an unknown file type error (Find/Save). If I save it and then open it with Media Player, it opens and plays correctly (so I know it was uploaded correctly). If I try to find the service for it, I get a error "application/octet-stream unknown".
So... Has anyone correctly uploaded a WMA file type (and played it back) in APEX?
If I run it under FireFox, it is handled slightly better. Still an unknown file type. But I can select Media Player. When Media Player opens, it says it is an unknown extension but then plays it correctly anyway...
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks in advanced.

I created a duplicate of my application on apex.oracle.com - the problem happens under APEX 4.0 as well...
It might be easier to see what is happening here.

  • Noob question on windows media files not importing

I gather I can't get these files into iMovie without converting them? Is there any freeware app to do this? I tried opening them with QT and got the message "The movie could not be opened. It is not a movie file."
They have the extension .ASF; "get info" tells me they are windows media files; they came from a POS Aiptek DV4500 (no, I don't do video much; this is a kid event at school that I'd like to see)
Sorry; I'm sure the answer is in the forum somewhere but I couldn't find it several pages into my search.

thanks -- flip4mac isn't free, though, at least for converting windows files, from what I can tell from the site. and the VLC software appears to just be a viewer; no importing.
so again, is there any freeware? or am i forced to pay $$ to see these files?
if that's the case, i'll just go back to my cruddy ol' XP laptop, because, again, i stress, i'm not gonna be doing this but maybe once a year....

  • Help with WMA Audio book files not being compatible with Droid 2

I am trying to download a ebook that is in Overdrive Media Console onto my droid x2.  When I try to transfer onto my droid, it says the format of this title(WMA Audiobook) is not compatible with the Motorola MB870 USB device. (MOT)  Is there a 3rd party app that I can use and if so , how do you use it.

    Hi Lb1964,
You should be able to find an application in the market to get eBooks on your Droid 2. I would recommend going to the market and search, using the keyword "Books." You can also follow these steps in the device itself.
    Google Ebooks
    Find it: > Books
To browse and select books, touch Get eBooks.Browse by category, or touch and search for a title or author. Touch a book to view more information about it. Touch Get Sample to get a free sample. To buy a book, touch the displayed price. After you confirm the purchase, the book is added to your library. Flick left and right to see more books in your library.
You are able to view the User's Manual for this device here:

I hope this information is helpful for you, Lb1964!
    Have a good day!

  • My Window Media Files will not run

This is a strange one, We installed PE4 and have had no issues. Just last week when I render a video as a window media file, there is no outward indication of an issue. When I try to play the file it will not play on Window Media Player. And I have tried to insert the file into Powerpoint and it also fails. I can render the file as a quicktime file with no issue, but this will not insert into a powerpoint presentation. I tried to "repair" the installation and uninstall and reinstall to no avail. Window Media Player files just quit running. When I run old files that were rendered with the program no problem. Is there an issue with a Media Player Upgrade?
    Please Help........

    gtwalkeriii,
What settings did you choose for the WMV? That could have a lot to do with it not playing. Have you tried to play it in programs like VLC Player? Have you run it though G-Spot (www.headbands.com/gspot) to see what it reports? Often, it will pick up errors in files. While it does a better analysis of MPEG and AVI files, most WMV's will also yield a report.
    Good luck,

  • I have converted most of my windows media files to itunes. However I had to close it down about 3 quarters of the way through. It then processed the album art. How can I convert the files that it didn't finish doing the first time? thanks

    Hi there,
hope you can help me. I helped my sister convert her window media files to itunes and set up an account for her. Unfortunately her computer is really slow and it was really late and we had to turn it off. It processed some of the album art for the files that it had converted. However, some songs were not converted and because there was quite a few left, I don't really know which ones did not get converted as I selected  all of the folders. How do I find out which ones I have left to convert and put the rest of the songs onto itunes for her please? Or are they on the itunes still as they showed up initially on itunes in the list to be converted.
    Thank you!

You could convert them all again and then dedupe, or use a Windows search to reveal all the WMA files and then try to work out which still need to be converted. If you're lucky iTunes would have processed the imports in alphabetical path order so it would just be a matter of working out where it had got up to...

I am trying to avoid exporting to dv tape and then re-capturing in premier to get this encode. Any help would be appreciated.

Eventually i will be doing alot of compression, so when that happens im gonna try to get the company im working with to pay for the needed software. Until then i will back up to dv(which is a great habit to get into) then use microsofts FREE encoder. Which is a shame, because altough I am new to FCP and macs in general, I have really enjoyed the whole transition but I still need to have a PC around for certain things. Hopefully little quirks like this will not exist. By the way do u know if i encode through Premiere or does the microsoft encoder stand alone.

  • Safari tries to open Windows Media files using iTunes

Sometimes when I try to view a Windows Media file on my PowerBook running 10.3.9 instead of the Windows Media player opening to play the file iTunes will open. When that happens I have to force quite iTunes and Safari, locate a WMV file on my hard drive, use the Get Info window to set all WMV files to open using the WMV player. It wouldn't be so bad if I only had to do this once, but I have to do it over and over again from time to time.
I'm not sure but repairing permissions might be one of the triggers that requires me to redo this, but it might not be necessary for me to repair premissions in order for this to happen. I can fix the problem when it occurs, but it's annoying and a waste of time to have to do it over and over again.
Has anybody else had this problem? anybody know hot to fix it once and for all? Thanks.

Upgrade to newer version which is comparable with Yosemite.

  • Windows Media file write failure

Help, I'm using a Gateway computer with Windows XP Professional OS, version 2002 and Service Pack3. It has Intel Core CPU, 6600 @ 2.40GHz, 2.41 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM. I have both Premiere Pro CS3 and CS4 installed. There's 54.1 GB of free space on my Hard Drive with 94.9 GB used.
I used to create .wmv files without issue with CS3 but with CS4 there's a failure every time. The project exports to Media Encoder and Encoder goes through all of the process and even looks like it finishes up. But once it gets to the end, here's the message I get.
    Windows Delayed Write Failed
Windows was unable to save all the Data for (my file) The Data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save file elsewhere.
It also had this message in separate window:
    Adobe Media Encoder Debug Event
Adobe Media Encoder has encountered an error.
    [..\..\src\Batch.cpp-186]
I tried changing all of the variables I could in the Media Encoder for creating a Windows Media File. For ex. you can choose several presets: "NTSC source to high quality download" "NTSC Source to Download 1024kbps " and several others. I haven't tried changing anything on the Filters, Audiences, Video, Audio or Others tabs. I never had to with CS3. Plus I don't know much about the Codec for Video or Audio.
    Any help is appreciated.

    Rick,
WMV is a very intense CODEC to work with. It requires power and time on either end - decoding or encoding. My guess would be that the throughput of the USB 2.0 connection just cannot keep up with that processing, where many other formats/CODEC's are easier to work with.
As for the minimum requirements, we find that they are horribly light. To lift from Monty Python, "we blow our noses in their general direction." They are provided to tell a user what it takes to install and launch the program, but when it comes to using said program - well, that is usually another matter.
If you have a desktop, and it has room in the case, you can most likely just add two more (2x is about the true min., and 3x is better) physical HDD's, of the controller type as your C:\. Depending on the MoBo, you probably have a SATA controller, and could add up to 3 additional drives, for basically the price of the drive, some cables, if not supplied, and a few screws. Most cases have the necessary mounting, or cages, for additional drives. Note the words "most," "probably," etc., as nothing in the PC world is created equal.
Were I making the request, I'd propose adding 2 more HDD's, at 7200 RPM and of the same controller type as your C:\. I'd ask for a minimum size of 500GB, but shoot for 1TB for each. Do not know if you have a Fry's Electronics near you (they are a Western US retailer), but they constantly have at least one such HDD on sale per week, and at very good prices.
Ignore SCSI. It's good and fast, but the drives are limited in size and the $/GB is not high. A RAID 0 array would be good for the media drive (actually it would be 2 HDD's), but to really benefit, one would do best with a hardware managed RAID, and most RAID controllers on MoBo's leave something to be desired. Harm makes recommendations for dedicated hardware RAID, but then you are talking having to do a real "dog & pony" show for you CFO, or Controller!
Maybe Harm has some suggestions, considering that you are on a city's budget.
Good luck, and glad that things are working for you. Think about relegating that USB 2.0 external to archiving Assets.

  • Wav - windows media file properties

hi all, is there a way to get properties from a .wav (windows media) file? for example, the time duration of the media?
    thanks in advance.
    Giovani Salvador

    hi Giovani,
    hope this helps:
    (from http://java.sun.com/products/java-media/jmf/2.1.1/guide/JMFPresenting.html#93867)
Getting the Duration of the Media Stream
Since programs often need to know how long a particular media stream will run, all Controllers implement the Duration interface. This interface defines a single method, getDuration. The duration represents the length of time that a media object would run, if played at the default rate of 1.0. A media stream's duration is only accessible through a Player.
If the duration can't be determined when getDuration is called, DURATION_UNKNOWN is returned. This can happen if the Player has not yet reached a state where the duration of the media source is available. At a later time, the duration might be available and a call to getDuration would return the duration value. If the media source does not have a defined duration, as in the case of a live broadcast, getDuration returns DURATION_UNBOUNDED.
There are some other ways to control the duration of the media. For example, if you need to wait the media stream to finish, you can listen for StopEvent, EndOfMediaEvent...

  • Mailed PDF files arrive on Windows platform as corrupt Windows Media files

Recently I mailed some .pdf files to 3 of the Windows machines on our network. Each of them reported that when attempting to open the .pdf file on the Windows machine, their system tried to use Windows Media instead of Adobe Reader. Of course they received an error message. When they saved the .pdf files on their machines, the files opened correctly in Adobe Reader.
These are files that I downloaded from the State of Oregon. After we had problems there, I mailed them some of the .pdf files I had created. Same results. The Windows machine treats them as corrupt Windows Media files.
I am the only Mac in our company. Of course the problem must be mine!?!
I am using MS Entourage as my mail client.
    Suggestions? Comments? Answers?
    Thanks!!

    Kappy,
No problem! Your suggestions were what made me consider the extension option in Entourage's preferences. Unfortunately, it didn't work.
Your suggestion also prompted me to try the same thing using Mail. Mail worked just fine, so the problem is in how Entourage handles the .pdf file being sent to a Windows computer where it will be opened either in Outlook or Internet Explorer.
It seems that Somewhere along the line, the .pdf extension is being changed to a .png extension which triggers the launch of Windows Media Browser.
I just rebuilt the Entourage database and I'll see what happens now.

  • Windows Media FIle

There is not an option to render out as a windows media file in Premiere CS4 on my Mac. Is there a way to do this that I am missing? Please help.

You need a program called Flip4Mac to produce wmv on a Mac. It attachs it self to QT and works very well.

  • Windows Media File error 2048

Anyone know how to convert a Windows Media file to run on Quicktime? I get a message that say's Error 2048 and that it's not a movie file.... Thanks.

Be aware that even if you get Apple's MPEG2 QuickTime Component, that if the file uses AC3 audio QuickTime Player will not be able to play the audio from that. Apple use the feeble excuse that this is because QuickTime does not support muxed video files (where the audio and video are mixed together). Normally QuickTime files keep the audio and video as separate streams in a single file.
I regard this as a feeble excuse because a) it should have been fixed years ago, after all other software does not have this problem even WMP copes with this, and b) even when using QuickTime and Apple's MPEG2 component the free third-party tool MPEGStreamClip (for Windows or Mac) can play AC3 audio in these files. I repeat this tool uses the same QuickTime and Apple's MPEG2 component and yet it can play AC3 audio when Apple's own QuickTime Player cannot.

  • Can't export timeline as a Windows Media file anymore.

Using Premiere 5.0.3 for over 2 yrs now.  No problems until now.  I first export my 30 min. timeline as a H.264 file as a master.  No problem.  Then I would export my timeline as a Windows Media file (NTSC Widescreen) for easier viewing on other computers.  Again, no problem - until  last week.  Each time I try to export now as a WMV file, it takes the usual over an hour to do the conversion, but then when I look at the file information after it's completed, instead of the approx. 400 Mb file size, it will be some other smaller file size anywhere from 4 Mb to 217 Mb.  Everytime I try to export again, (and waiting again over an hour each time for the conversion to complete), the file size will be something considerably less than it should be and different each time...but the time will always be what the video should be - approx. 30 min.  If I view the video, it will abrutly end corresponding to the file size, IE - if the file size is 200 Mb, the video stops at about 15 min.  What happened?  Nothing changed in my computer.  No new program was added.  No settings were changed...and my editing computer is not connected to the Internet so as to avoid any possible contaminaton from outside sources.

Thanks Jim for your responses.  It's suggestions like yours that get me to think in another direction, which is a good thing.
I never suspected anything wrong with the hard drive or any corresponding components because the drive worked fine otherwise - playing back clips already on it, transferring files from one drive to another, etc.  At any rate, I opened up the computer case and swapped out the SATA cable to that drive (I have lots of spares of everything) and then did a defrag and check of the drive which all showed good.  I then exported a couple more videos in the WMV format to that drive and everything worked fine, so hopefully all is good from now on.
    Again, thanks for your help.

  • Can I convert a DRM Windows Media file to a mp3 file?

Our library offers a site that you can download DRM windows media files. I can't use them on an ipod, so I want to convert them to mp3 files so I can.

Probably not legally. You might want to check with your library to see what you can do with them, for example, can you burn them to an audio CD? The whole purpose of the DRM is to prevent you from converting or copying the files in ways the rights holder hasn't authorized. Discussions about how to circumvent DRM are not allowed according to the terms of use of these forums. Sorry.

  • Converting a FCP sequence to Windows Media File - please help!

Hi fellow mac users, please help if you can would mean the world to me! I'm trying to export an edited sequence (32mins in length) from FCP 5 using Quicktime conversion to a Windows Media File. Although I'm able to launch the process successfully, it just seems to convert the very first minute or two and not the entire thing! I'm not well versed in these technical issues, so have no clue how to figure this out. I've even tried in vain to compress the sequence first, import into FCP and then try to export as WM but no luck. My boss is away and client is pushing and I'm stressing!
So if you can help, that would be fantastic!
    many thanks in advance.

Cleaner and Sorenson are huge and complex transcoders. You just need time and a credit card to download and then lots of time to experiment and figure out the quirks of each application. You do not have this time. Telestream offers a competitor called Episode. it's cool.
Get the full version of telestream's flip4Mac (if it was installed properly you can do this with a click on the system prerf panel for flip4mac). You will need a credit card. Be prepared for a very long transcode to WMP, even on a big Macintosh. I don't think you have the time for any of this nonsense.
