WMI Win32_VideoController and differentiating integrated vs discrete graphics

I am trying to do some hardware and config inventory with WMI and I am having trouble with graphics cards in certain circumstances. I
can use something like this (get-wmiobject
-class:'Win32_VideoController' -namespace:'root\CIMV2' -computername:'.').DriverVersion and I will get the driver version
of the currently active card. Works great for a desktop machine, but for a laptop with both integrated and discrete graphics, unless some program that triggers discrete graphics is also running, I get inventory info about the Intel HD only, and in 99% of cases
what I really want is the discrete graphics. I figure there are two possible ways to address it. Either there is a way to use WMI to get all installed cards, not just the currently active one, or there is a PowerShell way to specifically trigger use of the
discrete card. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

jrv, I don't understand the link. I know that the Intel GPU can handle dual monitors, but that's not my issue. My desire is to use PowerShell to inventory the GPUs on the machine, including available RAM and driver number. When I use the WMI based approach
noted above, I ONLY get the active GPU, which is normally the Intel GPU because the script is usually run when other, graphics intensive, programs are not running, so the Intel GPU is active. At least, I think that may be what's happening. But again, the key
is, on a dual GPU system, how does one use WMI to get ALL GPUss, not just one? And failing that, it is the discrete card that I most need to inventory, so is there a way to trigger use of the discrete card so that WMI reports that? As far as I can tell this
may be exclusively an nVidia Optimus issue, and PowerShell/WMI just can't be used due to limitations in PowerShell functionality.

  • Online gaming: integrated or discrete graphics?

For online gaming, is there any advantage using a discrete graphics card, versus integrated graphics?
My mother plays *A LOT* of online poker. She's actually quite good at it, but recently she's been complaining that her aging eMac is slowing her down - timeouts, dropped from gaming rooms, system freezes, etc.
So I've been looking at replacing her eMac with a new 24" iMac. Would it be worth spending the extra money to get an iMac model with a discrete graphics card (e.g., the Nvidia GeForce GT 120 or maybe even the ATI Radeon HD 4850), or would the integrated 9400M graphics on the cheaper iMac models serve her needs just as well.
    TIA for any advice.

For the type of gaming she is doing any iMac graphics card would be fine. Where having an upgraded graphics card would be an advantage is if she was doing 3D renderings or playing 3D action games where speed of the graphics would be important. For the type of gaming she's doing the graphics are fairly static therefore she would NOT see any advantage of upgrading the graphics.
    I would recommend getting a base 24" 2.66 GHz iMac or a base 24" 2.93 GHz iMac.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Macbook pro retina color profile changes when switching from integrated to discrete

Late 2013 macbook pro retina color profile changes when auto switching from integrated to discrete graphics card. Problem started after updating to 10.9.3

Same here. Really annoying because I have my screen calibrated for photo editing, which makes it much warmer than the default color profile. A lot of websites cause the graphics cards to switch for a couple of seconds, which causes the profiles to switched back and forth a few times, everytime. Really annoying, and dissapointing to see, considering Apple released like a hundred .3 betas.
You can use gfxCardStatus to make it stay on one graphics card over the other... Just remember to change it back when you're using a program that actually needs the descrete card.

  • Switch between integrated graphics and discrete graphics on a Satellite P-50A

I have a PSPMHU-0C702Q and I'd like to know if there is a way to switch between the intel integrated graphics and the nvidia discrete graphics?
And/or...is there a way to turn off either one?
I'd like to use the integrated graphics doing web and email but when gaming, switch to discrete.
I found a post stating the following for a different machine...
"...Your CPU has integrated graphics capability, but your system utilizes the ATI graphics card, so the integrated graphics on the CPU are not used.  The ATI graphics card has better specs than the integrated graphics anyway...."
Which points to the discrete graphics being used, however, when I run the directX diagnostic, the display device shown is the intel HD graphics 4600.
    Any insight?   Thanks in advanced.

I went through a similar pain recently.  Assuming that your hardware supports having both display devices enabled at the same time, set up the IGP using the modesetting driver.  This doc should have everything you need to get set up:

  • 2011 Macbook Pro and Discrete Graphics

    Hi Everyone
I am writing to give an update on this issue. Just to recount... my MBP Early 2011 went into the white screen of death mode in mid-December. I had immediately taken it in for check up and diagnostics at a Apple Service Centre in Kolkata. After paying Rs. 2400/- they called me and confirmed the diagnostics, which I had already pointed out to them. After that I could not access the hard drive for almost 20 days, and later I managed to install the Snow Leopard that had shipped with the MBP when I bought it. In the meantime I had been reading each and every post that has got posted here, and somehow the restart with the 'twist' trick worked for me to install Mountain Lion.
But all this with disabled graphics and very low performance.
I contacted apple about a week and half back and the customer service rep. on the phone advised me to take the MBP to a nearest service centre and tell them the problem along with this forum. I told the rep. that this is now a know issue and thousands of people are suffering not just loss of money but faith in apple and more importantly productivity, as we use this computer for all our main work. The rep. was very helpful, and raised a case and encouraged me to go into the service provider.
Last week I took the MBP to the service provider in Hyderabad, RSG Infotech. The rep. there spoke the script that we usually hear: that they will have to check, they will have to run diagnostics, it will cost minimum amount to get it checked since its out of warranty etc. I patiently heard everything. Then I told him the specific issue, told him the history of this and also said that apple has told me to come there. I gave the case number to them and showed this community. Fortunately the MBP was going through a display hang where the safari browser kept on refreshing without anything, and the rep. saw it and said yes its a gpu issue. So, I asked him to contact apple and let me know. He called me up after two days and gave a quotation for Rs. 45000/- for changing the battery (for it had swilled-up), the magsafe port and the logic board. I told him to wait for my call.
I then contact apple on phone. The customer rep. was very patient and helpful. He said that there is an open case against my earlier call and he would transfer the call to his senior. The supervisor too listened to me and asked a few questions. She was again very polite and helpful, and asked for some time to get the hardware diagnostics from the service provider. After half an hour she called me back and said that the battery will be replaced free of charge. She asked for a day to respond to the logic board issue. Yesterday she called me and told that apple is going to take care of the other parts free of cost, and I would have to bear the cost of minimum service Rs. 1500/- I agreed to it. I also asked her what the warranty period of the replaced parts would be. She said that it would be 90 days and I could take the MBP back to the service provider if any problem occurs.
Now I am waiting for the call from the service provider. This whole process shows 2 things, first that apple is serious about its customer care, and second that they know about this issue but will only address it case by case. The whole picture seems to be that apple is ready to help but you need to go pass the first rung of customer care, and tell them specifically to raise this issue to higher ups in the hierarchy. Since we have been using apple products for a long time, and since the company can help us out reliably I thing everyone must contact apple on phone or through the service centres to get a case opened. Only then will apple understand the extent of this problem. I am not sure about the third party solutions of rebelling/reflowing in India. Since anything apple in India is a very highly priced product and they would charge you money only to have a look at it !
Will keep everyone posted on this

    Hey!
I ran into the exact same issue around the same time like you. I have a early 2011 MBP 15", and the same issue arose. First, my external monitor (and laptop monitor) screen shifted like in your first shot. It happened a couple of times, unplugging/plugging the external monitor would help solve it. I restarted the comp and it didn't happen.
Tomorrow, though, the screen started exhibiting worse issues like you described. Lock ups, screen tearing, graphics glitches etc. I tried to localize the problem to be a software one, but failed. Althought Windows was stable, it also started showing glitches, and eventually they started appearing on the recovery partition as well.
I sort of identified the issue to be with the discrete graphics, as switching to integrated didn't cause the problems.
I brought it into the service center, where they noticed my laptop heats up substantially more than they would expect. They ran a couple of tests, many of which failed because my laptop locked up.
They offered two procedures: one is to switch out the logic board, which is the usual path they would take, and the other one (cheaper) was to actually re-solder in the graphics chip. They said it was a bit detached and not soldered well to the board. Either as a result of falling damage (a slight fall happened, but a very long while ago and I never had issues after that - I slipped while the laptop was in my backpack) or heating over time, it got fuzzed up. I had them do the resoldering and the laptop worked fine for about 10 days, and now it's acting up again.
I'll go for the logic board solution, but if you find any solutions, let me know. If you're interested, I can ping in with the results of the procedure.

  • Systemd multiseat with NVidia card and Intel integrated graphics

I'm trying to set up multiseat Gnome 3 on a system running the nvidia proprietary drivers. The first seat on the nvidia GPU is working fine. For the second seat I'm trying to use an integrated Intel GPU, but all I get is the GDM "Oh no, something has gone wrong" screen. I'm not sure why, but I suspect it could be because the intel driver is also trying to load nvidia's libglx.so:

One thing you can do to ensure highest perfomance on games is go to the Nvidia Control Panel, Manage 3D Settings, Programs, then find the game you want and set it to use only NVIDIA High Performance (or Discrete) graphics. You can't use both cards at the same time as of writing this (DirectX 11), but with the arrival of Windows 10 and DirectX 12 on July 29 you will be able to use both at once to increase performance. Until then, though, it is simply not possible to use both at once. The best option is to just use the GTX 860M.

  • Problem with discrete graphic card and DirectX 11

If I try any application to launch with discrete graphic card (nvidia geforce 740m) that using directx 11 it always crashes.
There no problems with directx 9 on on this graphic card.
There are no problems with integrated graphic card whether application using directx 9 or 11. Problem occurs only with discrete graphic card and directx 11.
    The things that i did:
    - Reinstall Windows
    - Install latest driver updates (I also tried to uninstall latest and install recomended driver downloaded from the oficial HP support 'driver download' web page)
    - different options on nvidia control panel 3d settings page
I also tried microsoft 'Direct3D Tutorial Win32 Sample' source code to build and debug. It is failed in function IDXGISwapChain:resent with code DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED and ID3D10Device::GetDeviceRemovedReason returns DXGI_ERROR_DRIVER INTERNAL_ERROR.
Is there any chance that is not hardware malfunction?

    @Enegue ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forum.  In your situation I would consider keeping with Directx 9.  The reason I say this is your notebook is not a performance gaming machine.  It is designed to be fore general use.
Some cards will notice issues when upgrading to direct 11 from a lower level.
Not to mention with your notebook you will want to stick with the drivers only provided from the HP support site.  They are proprietary for the notebook and could be the reason why the directx 11 is not working.
Here is the link to your systems supported drivers.

  • 2011 MacBook Pro and Discrete Graphics Card

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro (2.2 GHz Intel Core i7, 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 memory) running OS 10.8.2.  It has two graphics components: an AMD Radeon HD 6750M and a built-in Intel HD Graphics 3000. Since I've had the computer, the screen would get a blue tint when the computer switched between them.
However, as of two days ago, the problem has become substantially more severe.  The computer was working fine, when all of a suddent the screen when completely blue.  I had to force restart the computer.  Since then, the screen has gone awry on numerous occassions - each time necessitating a hard reset.
I installed gfxCardStatus, and have discovered that the computer runs fine using the integrated card, but as soon as I switch to the discrete card - the screen goes .
I am just wondering what my options are (any input on any of these would be appreciated!):
    1) Replace the logic board.  Would this necessarily fix the issue?
    2) Is there any way to "fix" the graphics card?
    3) Keep using gfxCardStatus and only use the integrated graphics card.  This is definitely the easiest/cheapest option, but to have such a computer and not be able to use the graphics card seems like a real shame.
    4) Is there any other alternative?

  • Is it possible to get a T61 with discrete Graphic card and NO OS?

    Hi
Thank you for reading my post.
I am looking to know whether I can get aT61 with discrete Graphic card and NO OS?
I dont like to pay for the OS as I will install Ubuntu.
    Thanks
    Solved!

  • Lenovo W530 - Stuck at "Loading initial ramdisk" GRUB Discrete graphic

As in the thread https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=146006 (only that I do not have any encryption on my drive) I cannot get my ThinkPad W530 booting (I have installed via EFI) with Discrete graphics mode (set in BIOS). NVIDIA Optimus works with optirun and Integrated graphics works fine but I cannot start with Discrete graphics.
I want to do this since I cannot connect an external monitor to my computer at all right now (the Mini DisplayPort and VGA adapter are only physically connected to the NVIDIA card). I have tried following several more or less incomplete guides on how to start a second X server with bumblebee but I cannot get those working and do not see two X servers a a good solution. I want a virtual display that spans over two monitors. I tried booting the computer with an Ubuntu Live USB stick and it automatically connected and used both monitors (when I set Discrete graphics in the BIOS) even in the installation process, and I can run games like StarCraft II just fine on my Arch install with optirun (when I set NVIDIA Optimus in the BIOS) so the hardware seems to work just fine.
When I boot the regular Arch linux kernel (3.17.1-1-ARCH) with Discrete graphics I get to the message "Loading initial ramdisk...", then the screen turns black. My system is using GDM for login and Gnome as window manager.
I managed to login blindly (not sure if it was through GDM or Ctrl + Alt + F2 since I tried both) during the black screen and execute a command that I later found in my .zsh_history file and I also can see that the drive access led is blinking a while after the black screen so it seems that the system has not hanged entirely. If I disable GDM the screen does not turn black but freezes at the "Loading initial ramdisk..." output.
My /boot/grub/grub.cfg file is (I am not trying to boot with the linux-ck or linux-rt kernel that I also have installed):

  • Which lenovo models have BIOS option to choose discrete graphics

I am planning on buying a Lenovo with an Nvidia graphics card.
Apparently, only the expensive Lenovos have an option in the BIOS to choose 'discrete graphics' or the dedicated graphics card.
The cheaper Lenovos only have a choice between 'Switchable graphics' and 'UMA only'( which I guess is the integrated graphics).
Can someone tell me which is the least expensive Lenovo model that has an option to choose 'Discrete graphics' in the BIOS ?
    Thanks.

The W520, by Indian standards, is an expensive model.

  • Efilogin-helper requires for the discrete graphic card

After updating to the latest version of osx on my 2014 macbook pro 15.
There is a process named efilogin-helper always requesting for the discrete graphic card and taking the energy and CPU..
Is there any solution to fix this problem??

I have to use a software to change the graphic card to integrated one only..

  • ITunes 11 not switchable to Discrete Graphics

    Hello!
I'm trying to switch iTunes to use the Discrete Graphics chip instead of the Integrated Graphics. That's especially interesting when running the visualizer @ full screen 2560x1600 res. Various other apps (Photoshop, Chrome...etc.) support switching. Any thoughts on why that doesn't seem possible?
    Thank you

I've also tried to reinstall iTunes and remove the whole Library so it will open a completely empty library with new installation of iTunes, and even that doesn't help. All the permissions for the iTunes folders are present.

  • T510 w/ NVIDIA NVS 3100M -- Window 7 not recognizing discrete graphics card

    Hi --
I just got a T510 w/ discrete graphics card, ie, the NVIDIA NVS 3100M w/ 512mb of dedicated video memory.
However, when I look in "Performance Information and Tools" under the "View and print detailed performance and system information", I see the graphics as "Intel(R) HD Graphics". Under the "Graphics" section I see this:
    Graphics
    Display adapter type
    NVIDIA NVS 3100M
    Total available graphics memory
    1696 MB
          Dedicated graphics memory
    64 MB
          Dedicated system memory
    0 MB
          Shared system memory
    1632 MB
    Display adapter driver version
    8.17.12.5738
    Primary monitor resolution
    1920x1080
    DirectX version
    DirectX 10
This is a bit confusing, because now it says the adapter is NVIDIA, but the dedicated memory is only 64 MB. Seems odd as I should have 512MB?
    Thanks

I'm fairly certain you can force Optimus to be discrete only or integrated onlyin the BIOS or in some of the Power Manager settings. Otherwise, you can try loading DirectX and seeing what dxdiag tells you about your graphics card.
In addition, Lenovo's implementaiton of Optimus seems to allow you to run certain programs on the IGP and other programs on the discrete chip simultaneously, so it may simply be allocating the Windows benchmark thread to the IGP instead of the NV chip, thereby causing the flawed readings. Don't know exactly how one forces a process to run using the discrete GPU though.
