WMP54G+PowerMac G4+Leopard

Okay, I saw a top like this, but it did not say whether or not it supported Leopard.
I am considering buying a G4 PowerMac. I have a WMP54G network card, and I was wondering if that would work with the PowerMac if I installed Leopard on it. The topic I read before was linked to here http://www.ralinktech.com/ralink/Home/Support/Macintosh.html I was wondering if the 10.4 version would work 10.5

Yes, I have mine working in my Sawtooth with Leopard. One oddity I found was when I replaced my old Linksys router with an Airport Extreme I had to give it a manual address.
But other than that everything works fine.

  • PowerMac running Leopard wakes up but the Apple display doesn't

I installed Leopard 10.5.1 on my old Dual G4 MDD (2x867MHZ). My monitor is an Apple Display 20". Whenever the system goes to sleep and I try to resume, the computer comes up, but not the display, which remains in suspended mode. The computer is fully functional since I can VNC into it from another Mac. I can't seem to find a solution for this problem online. I already reset the PRAM and the PMU, and I am running out of options. The computer has an airport card but no other expansion card or any attached peripherals. It used to behave properly with Tiger, therefore I think the problem seems related to the Leopard install. Any hint, or indication that this is a known issue, would be greatly appreciated.

Hi! Sleep problems are common with Leopard. I can set my monitor only to go to sleep and it may wake up fine for several days and then not. It seems worse since the 10.5.1 update. I may just use a screen saver and not let the monitor sleep. Tom

  • Airport extreme card not working with leopard / G5

I just upgraded my PowerMac to leopard (G5 dual 1.8, 3 gigs of ram, 250 GB HD). I bought it new in December 2004 from apple. Previously I had been using a USB adapter to connect to my wireless internet at home (Linksys WRT54G). This device does not support leopard so I got an airport extreme card from gainsaver.com.
The Airport extreme card is configured properly as far as I know but it will only connect to my network for about 5 seconds then it drops. The USB adapter worked perfectly in the same spot and my macbook right next to it works fine as well.
    1. Could it be a bad Airport extreme card?
    2. Is this a known issue? And possibly be resolved with the 10.5.2 update?
It is a fresh Leopard install with no updates as I can not connect it to the internet to get them. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi, I have the same machine (4 ram slots?) have you got the connector for the aerial that connects to the motherboard attached to your airport card. Mine works a treat.

  • Problem installing Snow Leopard on an external drive

Having just treated myself to a shiny new iMac, I have had a change around of my supplementary drives. I wanted to create a bootable external drive for backups and emergencies. I have a 500GB internal drive leftover from my G5 Powermac, which I have put into a Macally caddy for SATA drives. I have formatted it in Disk Utility and it mounts successfully via the Firewire 800 cable. DU shows it as having the GUID Partition Table.
The problem came when I tried to install Snow Leopard. The installation starts correctly and shows the drive as being selectable. Once the installation proceeds the progress bar gets about 25% of the way across when the iMac restarts and gets no further than the grey screen. The only way I can free it is to do a PRAM reset.
I have tried a similar procedure with my Powermac and Leopard and the same thing happens, so it must be something to do with the drive and caddy. Can anyone suggest what to do next?

There is no way for the installer or the Startup Disk system preference to know if the firmware of an external drive does or doesn't support booting a Mac. In theory they all should; in reality a few do not for various reasons, generally having to do with some proprietary feature like power management or something else that isn't completely specified in USB or FireWire standards.
There is no absolutely reliable technical specification for determining this. As a rule, interfaces based on the Oxford FW chips will boot a Mac; others may or may not, depending on the chip model & revision. Unfortunately, this info is often not published by manufacturers, especially for integrated devices not intended for drive replacements, which may use proprietary interface & power management circuitry.

  • HP psc 2175xi Scanning Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8

According to the information at the web pages for the HP psc 2175xi AIO, scanning is not possible with Leopard 10.5 and later using the HP Scan Pro package.
    I got it to work.
    Powermac G5:
    Leopard 10.5.8
    512MB RAM
    250GB SATA HDD
    DVD-RW PATA interface
Downloaded the software for the psc 2170 series all-in-ones:
      http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=mp-42188-1 &cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&os=219&product=90812&sw_lang=
    - Direct link to .dmg file, 101.28MB:
      http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software7/COL15886/mp-42188-1/2170_790_EN.dmg
Extracted the .dmg file then ran the installer.
Tried to launch various applications in the resulting Hewlett-Packard folder, but an immediate crash always resulted.
Next, launched Disk Utility then executed Repair Permissions. Restarted the Powermac.
I was then able to scan using HP Scan Pro, no problems or crashes. All other included apps also ran fine.
NOTE: With the Powermac G5 repair permissions took a really long time, so be very patient.

You need to install it from a retail Mac OS X 10.5 DVD. If you don't have the disk which was originally used to install the OS, buy one from a source such as Amazon or eBay.

  • Installing Leopard freezes during installation..

    hi.
im updating my old tiger powermac to leopard and its freezing during installation..
i cant take the disc out and try the original discs as it seems like it needs the disc to boot from.
ive held down the space bar but it doesnt eject.
    any ideas?
    thanks

    hi.
i have both discs (leopard and snow leopard as retail)...
at the moment it wont start in safe mode... it just doesnt startup and until i take my finger off shift it wont go anywhere other than the white apple screen.
i have tried dragging the install disc using disc utility to the macHD and erase the destination... now all it has done is create a clone of the install disc on the internal HD.
I put my other mac in target disc mode with the snow leopard disc in and tried to use startup disc to restart from it but it didnt show up as available... so im stuck...
i cant eject the disc, its not installing properly and my internal HD isnt bootable...
    any ideas?

  • My PM G4 just falls short of Leopard system requirements

As you can see from my signature im just falling short on the system requirements to install leopard on my powermac G4.
Leopard system requirements state you need a minimum processor of PPC 867 mhz, my Powermac G4 quicksilver 2002 has an 800 mhz processor, so my question is has anybody sucessfully installed Leopard on a powermac G4 with a 800 mhz processor.
I do plan to upgrade computers but wanted to hold on to this G4 as a server and it would have been nice to upgrade OS'es.

I used the procedure at http://blog.kupferman.net/?p=3 and have been merrily running Leopard since it shipped on my G4, 450 MP. FWIW, it's faster in all respects than 10.4.11. MacOSXHints posted http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20071214143723301, which I didn't try. Other installation options listed at

  • Add profile from iBook (Panther) to G5 PM (Leopard)

I have an iBook with Panther, can I add a profile from that Mac to my G5 PowerMac running Leopard, without messing up this existing profiles on the G5?
I have the whole iBook HDD cloned using CCC onto a FW drive.

you can try using Migration Assistant (it's in Applications/Utilities) and import one user account only. this will not affect your existing accounts. however, I'm not sure how well MA works when moving from Panther to leopard directly.

  • Message: "Photoshop quit unexpectedly"

When I quit non-Apple apps such as Photoshop CS3 I get the message "Photoshop quit unexpectedly." This happened with Leopard OS too. Also with my old PowerMac and Leopard. These reports have been going to Apple for sometime now. Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks.

Such a thing might be due to some non-compatible plugins being present. If you do have some older plugins onboard, try removing all of them and relaunch PS. If it doesn't quit unexpectedly, slowly add back each plugin until you find the culprit.

  • Change NetBIOS name in 10.6 Server

I'm setting up  a new server to replace my PowerMac G5 Leopard server, just got a Mac Pro so I put 10.6 server on there for file sharing services. I cannot figure how to change the NetBIOS name however. When i go into System Prefs and try to change it that way, it points me to Server Admin, but I can't figure out where to change it. It's currently at new-host.local, and I would like to change it to Lambda.local. How do I go about doing this? Thanks

    Hi,
We can use the active directory rename tools to rename domain NetBIOS name. But it is a complex and risky process.
For more information about how to use random.exe to rename domain name, please refer to the following article:
    Rendom

Besides, renaming of the NetBIOS domain name is not supported in any version of Exchange Server.

  • Belkin USB F5D7050 causes panic

I am working on a friend's G4 PowerMac with Leopard. I have been trying to set up a USB wireless adapter F5D7050. I downloaded the Ralink drivers, installed them, plugged in the adapter, found it in the Network prefs and activated it, but as soon as I try to access my router, I get total kernel panic followed by the grey curtain over the screen forcing a shutdown.
Now if I do a restart with the device plugged in, the mac panics on startup at the final windows as it is setting networking up.
Any ideas of things I can try? BTW, I set the same adapter up on my intel macbook with the same drivers and it worked fine (Snow Leopard).
    Thanks; Rick

I have solved my issue, but in case anyone else has this problem...
The Belkin F5D7050 uses modified Ralink drivers. The Belkin drivers didn't work for me, nor did the Ralink ones form Ralink's site. I went on the Newer Technology site which also uses modified Ralink drivers according to their product description, but somehow they must be different, as they worked fine on the G4 with the Belkin F5D7050 and it now works.
Better yet, just buy the Newer Technology USB wireless adapter. I wish I had.

  • Brightness setting missing in Preferences

The brightness adjustment is missing from my System Preferences. I cannot adjust the brightness from my keyboard or from the side of my Apple 24" monitor. The screen is stuck at a darker setting that is useful. Is there a way to fix this?

I had read in a few places to go to System Preferences/Display to adjust Brightness. Since my monitor would not respond to the Brightness adjustment buttons and my keyboard controls just beeped at me, I figured the control missing in System Preferences meant something was wrong on the OS level.
Further research revealed other users having similar problems on MacBooks. I also found some who had Brightness problems with Tiger. One person suggested opening Classic (OS 9). I did it and the Brightness controls did work. A clunky way to fix the problem, but apparently Apple has put off fixing it for some time in Tiger. It'll have to do until I upgrade to a new computer and not be using Tiger anymore (I fear problems if I try to upgrade my PowerMac to Leopard... I hear too many horror stories).

  • IMac waking up at night

For the past week or so my iMac has been waking up from sleep in the middle of the night, and I don't know why. Other people are reporting the same issue with their new 8-core Mac Pros running Leopard, but I'm running Tiger on a G4. Could it be last week's release of OS updates (e.g. QuickTime and/or iTunes) that is the culprit? My computer is networked with a G4 PowerMac running Leopard, but that machine doesn't seem to have this problem. Any suggestions?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Try resetting the SMC:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446
Note: Sweet Patootie Pie, this doesn't apply to you as the iMac (Flat Panel) doesn't have an SMC, although the next step may be a PMU reset.

  • LiveType Crashes Previewing Certain Effect  - lib3ivxEnc.dylib

    Hi,
I've used LiveType before (with FCE) and have now installed FCS2 (with FCP 6, LT 2.1.3 etc.). However, poking around the LiveType text effects - the application always crashes on me when previewing certain effects. For example if I launch the application, go immediately to the "Effects" tab of the Media Browser, then click on "Barrel Jump" the beach ball appears and I crash with an error saying the problem appears to be with the lib3ivxEnc.dylib plug in.
I've updated the SW with all the updates - still crashes. I followed the FCEHD removal instructions http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301182 (improvising on the way for other FCP pieces), reinstalled the suite again last night, left it unpatched and still no joy. Though I have noticed that without the patches applied the app will sometimes show me lines in the preview and remain up. I've even once used the effect in some sample text but then it crashed again later when I started to go through the Media Browser again a few minutes later.
I've tried different accounts on my machine - but LiveType still crashes, so it's not a user setting/config thing (or doesn't seem like it).
I've done a number of searches in this forum and Google in general and have not seen this reported before - so I'm assuming something in my setup is messed up and causing this.
    I'd love to know if:
    a) anyone has an idea of what might be wrong or what I can do to correct
    b) has full FCP removal instructions in case there is some piece still hanging around that I haven't found and is not being overwritten during the install
    c) has advice to reinstall just LiveType and it's components instead of the entire suite
The only thing exciting in my setup is that the LiveType support files are all on an external FW800 drive since my startup drive is around 30GB and won't hold it all without busting open.
I've considered a fresh install of Leopard and then FCP to see if that works - but I'd love a less timely solution if possible.
I've not installed this on my Laptop (not sure it meets the specs) to see if it's reproducible there but might to see. Right now this is all happening on my PowerMac G5 (Leopard 10.5.1).
Let me know if I've left out any details to help you understand the issue better and if you have any suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Sean

    I think I'm making progress.
I again tolled the system for FCP components using the FCEHD article. I think I ended up removing a bit more than last time. I also tried the 3ivx uninataller and it failed So I simply trashed the 3ivx folder in apps and again the 3ivx software in the folders referenced by the Apple article.
This time when I started the FCPS2 install, all components listed themselves as "Install" instead of a few showing "Upgrade" before. I installed only LT this time and after the installation I ran LT and the effects worked fine! Whew!
I've now restarted the install for the rest of the FCPS2 apps and we'll see if everything works OK afterwards. If not - then other part of the suite is causing the issues.
Good point about permissions - I've not done that in a while since I've been deleting and installing so I'll be sure to do that after the install completes.
I'll post again once the install works (or doesn't).

  • How to reestablish connection to external FireWire drive with iTunesLibrary

Hello all. Here's the scenario I would like help with, please:
I currently have a G5 Dual 2.0 GHz PowerMac running Leopard 10.5.1 and iTunes 7.6 . I have my iTunes library of tunes on an external FireWire Drive. I expect to purchase a Mac Pro soon. I expect to use Migration Assistant to pull files from my G5 over to the Mac Pro. Good so far.
Everything I've read about having ones iTunes songs on an external drive always starts with the assumption that the iTunes songs are currently on ones internal drive. In my case, as you can see, that is not the case. Given that I already have my songs on an external drive, that I'll have a new computer with things in their default positions (unless Migration Asst. pulls over my iTunes preferences including iTunes songs location), how, then, can I make sure the new iTunes app on the new Mac Pro "sees" where my music already exists?
Thanks for any help you might give. I'd like to be able to get iTunes working properly from day one on the new Mac Pro without iTunes problems.
    Wayne

Thank you Airsculpture. What you laid out is the exact procedure I have used in the past. For some reason I thought switching to a new OS on a new computer might complicate things further. Glad to see that is not the case.
    I appreciate your help!
    Regards,
