Wmv extentson can't open it

I can't open .wmv extension in my iPad I get message Safari can't open attchment. What should I do

Another newbie question, I am afraid. I am trying to watch a windows media video stream in Safari, from a live web cam, on an iPad2. There are four VLC apps in the app store, but none seems to say it does what I am after. Which one are you recommending, please?
Similarly, yxplayer seems to be for the iPhone, and it is not clear from the description whether it will do what I want.
Since it is a live feed, I do not have the option of downloading and playing, but if anyone has another workaround, I am happy to try it.

  • I can't open movies with extension .wmv I get a page of symbols.

Someone sent me a movie clip extraordinaire_instrument_de_musique.wmv
I can't open it correctly. What I get is a file of symbols in textmate. I would like to be able to watch the movie, but don't know how to get around this problem.

You can open that file in your media player, hopefully will QuickTime play such a file. Firefox sees the file as a text file and displays it as such and you do not seem to have a file action in Firefox > Preferences > Applications for .wmv files.

  • Can't open WMV files in Quicktime since Snow Lep upgrade.....

I Can't open WMV files in Quicktime since Snow Leopard upgrade
I get an error message saying 'Quicktime player must be installed to run this application'
This is happening on both of my macs
    Any help appreciated

I had this problem. Double clicking the WMV file produced the message you had. However, if I open by dragging the WMV file onto the QuickTime X icon in the dock it did indeed open.
I then looked at the WMV's Get Info window and found that it was set to open in WMV Player by default. Obviously I do not have WMV Player installed. The drop down menu on this setting did have QT Player as the other option. When I changed the option to QT Player as default the "Change All" button became active. Previously it had been greyed out. Things have been OK since, but I have not tried it on any new WMV files.

No. To do so you need to install Flip4Mac WMV Player 2.4.4.2.

  • Can't open .WMV files

After years of using QuickTime with Flip4Mac to open .WMV files, suddenly it won't work. Not sure if this is a QuickTime or Flip4Mac issue, but thought I'd post here first. I have the most current version of both apps. FWIW, the only thing I've done recently (since last successfully viewing a .WMV file) is install 10.6.2, which shouldn't be the culprit or it would be headlined all over the internet. Here's what I get when trying to open a .WMV file:
"The document “xxxxxx.wmv” could not be opened"
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Unfortunately, the latest version of QuickTime does not have the ability to export using third-party plug-ins, however Apple has made QuickTime 7 available to install alongside QuickTime X. You can install it from the Snow Leopard install disk or by running a Quartz (*.qtz) file.
QuickTime 7 will install to your Applications/Utilities folder.

  • Can't open .wma or .wmv files

Maybe I should ask a broader question: What are the various audio and media file extensions I should be aware of, and what do I need to open/display them? I was thoroughly confused on my PC, where few such things worked. With my MacBook Pro, I can easily watch YouTube videos, and listening to songs with iTunes is a breeze.
However, while visiting a news site on the Internet, I still occasionally encounter videos that I can't watch. At the moment, I have some audio and video files with .wma and .wmv extensions, respectively, that I can't open.
Can Apple open these files, or can I somehow convert them to .mp3 files that I can use?
    Thanks.

The choices offered will depend on:
    a) The format of the AV file itself
    b) The applications you have installed/available that can handle that MIME type
Some files can be played/opened with many applications, some will require a specific one due to file type or the track composition - i.e. muxed mpegs might play the video but not the audio in some players.
Flip4Mac is a Windows Plug In Component for QuickTime meaning that QuickTime can decode/play mwv avi and other Windows files.
VLC is an Open Source player than can play/stream many types of AV file (including 'copies' of DVD's)

  • Can't open .wmv in browser

I can't open the video on this URL: http://www.scottmcleod.org/didyouknow.wmv The audio works, but no video. The quickTime Player screen appears but stays white. I have reinstalled QuickTime Player and the MPEG-2 utility.

The quickTime Player screen appears but stays white. I have reinstalled QuickTime Player and the MPEG-2 utility. The video is MSS2 which appears to be a WMV 9 advanced codec. Flip4Mac, VLC, and FFmpegX don't seem to support it. If you really have to have this file, suggest you see if you can convert it on a Windows platform to a QT compatible format.

  • Can not open wmv download

I bought a new iMac last August and have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 installed. Several of my other iMac friends send me downloads by wmv. and I can never open them. A screen comes up that says: “ The document could not be opened. The movie is not in a format that Quick Time Player understnads.“
I am wondering how these other iMac users can open these downloads, but I can’t. I assume I need some other software, and that my QuickTime Player v.10.0 needs help. Anyone know what I should do?? And, where to go to do it??
    Grandma Syl

Quicktime is only capable of certain audio and video file formats.
If you would need support for WMV, could could install the Flip4Mac Quicktime plugin (free):
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/video/flip4macwindowsmediacomponentsforqui cktime.html
If you also need more support for other formats (like FLV), you might also want to check Perian (also free):

You could always point out that anyone whould really wants to watch it could download and install the free QT 7 Player in much the same way that many Mac users would have to download and install either a WMV Player or a WMV component for their QT Player.
You realize, of course, things will likely get worse once you start "customizing" your exports of each recipient? My Sister only wants WMV 9 ($50 for Microsoft "approved" bi-directional components), my brother-in-law "prefers" DivX 6 minimum ($20 for the components), my nieces are into YouTube (posted directly from iMovie '08 for the price of iLife '08) and want everything posted there, and my Aunt (whose computer is more than a decade old) only wants MPEG-1 (which I used to make with iVCD (don't remember what that used to cost or Ti Toast 9 at $80) and of course there is always Visual Hub (at just under $24) for all of the others who will settle for older AVI or WMV files. You can also try exporting some of the "less recent" or "older" codecs like MPEG-4/AAC, Sorenson Video, Sorenson 3 Video, H.263, Cinepak, etc. There are dozens of audio and video codecs that can be combined in in hundreds of combination and placed in various file containers but the problem is you will probably never find a single compression format that really satisfies everyone all of the time. So before anyone can "draw you a map," you will have to make a decision as to "down which road you wish to travel."

  • Can't open Quicktime .mov file (Error -2048)

I can't open and run an 11mb QuickTime .mov file that was created, I'm pretty sure, on a Mac. I'm using a PC running QuickTime 7.2. Colleagues using PCs with QuickTime 7.0 and 7.1 can't run it either. The guy who created the file apparently has no problem running it on a Mac. My full error measage is "Error -2048: Coundn't open the file because it is not a file that QuickTime understands". Any ideas anyone?

Ask the guy that made the file what codecs are used in it. Mac users can open, save and edit .wmv files and he may have put one inside a .mov container. It will never play on a PC unless saved as .wmv extension.
