.wmv files won't open when downloaded with Safari

Recently bought this MacBook. It has Safari 3.2.3. When I download any .wmv file, the icon is a blank page icon and opens with textedit, not QuickTime or QuickTime Pro, even though the extension is .wmv. The .wmv files download properly with other browsers I have tried. I am hesitant to upgrade Safari to 4.0.3 due to the many posts of all the problems it seems to have. (I still have an unresolved issue with Safari on my other Mac after I updated.)
The message I get is "The file could not be opened. The file is not a movie file."
Anyone have an idea?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Safari 4.0.3 (that I am aware of). There have been very few posts about problems, actually. The problems that have been posted almost always are specific to an individual configuration. For perspective, this user-to-user forum is for people who have problems. As a comparison, if you went to a hospital and extrapolated, you would think the whole world was sick.

However, as you have been told, normally Windows executable files cannot be opened or used on Macs.

Downloaded file won't open when password-secured

Since moving from Acrobat 8 to 9, my passworded pdf file will not open once it is downloaded from the server. My file was created as an .xls file in openoffice, then converted to pdf. Password security was then set in Acrobat 9 pro (mac). I works fine when not passworded. Is there something I can do to regain the security functionality? Note: the problem only occurs AFTER uploading to the server; it works as it should on my computer before that.

Thanks - I tried do that but I didn't see any appropriate forum - the choices were too specific. Any chance you could point me to the correct one to deal with this issue?

My Time Machine won't back up and files won't open when double clicked.

I'm not sure if these are related, but recently my MacBook Pro has been acting much more sluggish than usual.
To start, I have a 13in MacBook Pro Mid 2012 model with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 memory. I've got it new in the summer of 2012, and haven't had any real problems until now. I have a 1TB Hitachi external hard drive with over 600GB left of storage. I'm running Yosemite.
Lately, as in the past few weeks but more noticeably the past few days, I can't open files if I just double click on them from my desktop or from searching them outside of the application. For instance, if I click on a word document on my desktop, it will cause the work icon to bounce for a while, pretending to open, but it never does. If the application is already running, the file just won't open. If I search from the "open" selection within the application, it works fine. This is true for all of my Microsoft Office apps, Photoshop, Preview, iTunes, and everything in between, all of which I had never had a problem with before.
Next, anytime I try to backup my system using Time Machine, it simply shows the "Preparing Backup" status and never starts. I've had the hard drive and used it as a Time Machine since I got the computer, and have had zero problems at all.
I've tried CleanMyMac2, Memory Clean, and I've always kept my Mac very clean and organized, as in no duplicate files, moving my biggest files onto my hard drive, and deleting any of my unnecessary files. I know I don't have a ton of RAM left, but I'm honestly not completely sure what to do about that, as this model apparently doesn't have RAM updates available.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Why can I not print out a pdf-file (train ticket NS) when downloaded with Firefox? (file says (SECURED)

When ordering and paying a train ticket by internet they send a pdf-file, which one must download and print. When downloading this with Firefox (from my e-mail account) the pdf-file says (SECURED) and I cannot print out the ticket (pdf-file). (Adobe program stops automatically).
When downloading this same pdf-file in Safari, I encounter no problems.

Current Firefox versions have enabled a built-in PDF Viewer that doesn't have all features that other PDF readers like the Adobe Reader have or may not function properly otherwise.
You can change the action for Portable Document Format (PDF) from Preview in Firefox to use the Adobe Reader application or set to "Always Ask" in "Firefox > Preferences > Applications".

Downloaded JPG Files Have Security Warning When Downloaded with FF 14.0.1

Since updating to FF14.0.1, JPG files that are downloaded from the internet display "Open File - Security Warning" "Unknown Publisher" when double clicked to open. I can disable the warning for individual files, but would rather have it global for all since JPG file are a low security risk. They do open without the warning when downloaded within IE8. I couldn't find any FF security settings that may affect this issue.

I'm not aware of any changes in Firefox 14 relating to this feature, but there are dozens of changes in each release, so I certainly can't rule it out.
Is the E drive a partition on your hard drive, RAM disk, removable storage? Just wondering whether it might be treated differently than the C drive for some reason. But IE and Firefox should be consistent, since this is all about Windows' internal security controls...

RTF files won't open; Icons replaced with dotted rectangles in Finder

Hello all, I am trying to troubleshoot a friend's computer. She uses TextEdit to take notes and saves her files as RTFs. A while ago she complained that one of her textfiles wouldn't open, even though she could see the file in the Open dialog in TextEdit. However, the file as it appears in the Open dialog does not have the traditional RTF icon. It is replaced with a dotted rectangle. This error happened again a few days ago.
The problem has only occurred with a few text files. Others work.

Thanks. That seems to have fixed it. I logged out and then logged in to a different account. The problem wasn't there and I could open the files. Then I logged out and then back into my original account and the problem had been fixed there as well. Thanks so much for your invauable help and quick responses.

What can I do to get it to open? Is it a problem with my firewall or what?

some pdf files open just fine, but this particular file (and a few like it) will open the Reader but the reader comes up with an error box that says the file is corrupted or not a compatible file, as shown here:
I get this file from my download folder which gets it from a link in an email (from a trusted site I subscribe to)--been getting this file (a 'zine) for years and never had a problem with it. I think the error coincided with an update/upgrade to the reader a few months ago. Last month's issue didn't work at first, but later when I tried again it opened fine...there are a few other files I get in a similar way which also seem to have a problem. I've tried turning off the Reader security stuff but no joy....

Wrong file icons - files won't open when double-clicked

I have a the following problem on a powerbook.
Most picture files (JPGs, but not bearing the .jpg extension) are not reckognised any more by the system.
In fact, they bear an icon of Terminal exec (a black square with a green "exec" note in the corner).
When double-clicked, they don't open in Preview any more, they act as a terminal app, and won't launch, obviously.
The only way to open them is to go the hard way : in Preview, File menu, Open...
Another way is to change their names by including the ".jpg" extensions, which seems to wake up the id from the system and place back the correct icon and app link. But we have 1000's of pictures...
Painful.
We tried rebuilding OS X desktop, repairing permissions, and update prebinding (using the excellent ToolsX 3.4). No results yet.
Any idea someone?

Have you tried selecting a picture, doing command i, for info, then in the info window setting the app for that file as Preview then clicking Change All?
Does ToolsX have a "Rebuild Launch Services database" function
or an update for "whatis" and "Locate" databases?

RDP file won't open on Mac with double click

Hi
We have sort of created our own RDP Gateway and this used to work fine on Mac's double click the RDP file and this automatically opened Microsoft Desktop App and you could login in once entering username and password. Since the last couple of updates to
RDP App it doesn't work when double clicking the RDP downloaded file, it works if I import it into the RDP App and start it but not when I double click it.
This is obviously causing an issue with quite a few users and causing our number of support calls to increase dramatically.

Photoshop elements 5.0 won't open when downloaded on my pc

i have an old version of Elements (5.0) which I used to have downloaded on my pc (operating system is Vista) which I removed. When I reloaded it to my pc with the cd it appears to download the application but I can't open it. Anyone have a clue as to why?

I loaded the program from a purchased cd and it looks like it is loaded on my pc. When I try and open the application nothing happens. Sometimes I will get a welcome page but then when I try to go to organize or edit nothing at all happens. It doesn't even spin up or act like it is trying to open. When I go to task manager it doesn't even show the program as open and not responding. Just does nothing. I have installed, removed and reinstalled and still nothing. No error message is being shown. Nothing happens.

Can I set a preference so that files don't open when downloaded?

I'm downloading a series of video files. I click on each link and they start downloading. I might have several that are all downloading at once. While they download I go on to work on something else. However, when each file finishes downloading, the program I use to view the video opens and I have to take time to close it and go back to work. Any suggestions? I'm sure there is a simple solution. Safari Preferences>General: at the bottom of the pane uncheck 'Open "Safe" files after downloading'.

Lightroom 5 is not opening when downloaded with creative cloud?

I have creative cloud and have tried downloading lightroom 5 multiple times now, i have completely updated my macbook and still the problem is not solved. It will come up as if its about to open then disappear. It doesn't download as its own folder like my photoshop and indesign files have if this has anything to do with it?

Purchased Elements, Downloaded to Drive, Can't find Files, Won't Open from Download list

Can someone please assist? I purchased elements, downloaded the files, saved them to a shared drive, and they are nowhere to be found now. I can't open them from the browser download list, or from the Adobe Screen that says Open Bundle.
