Won't add to library TV shows stored in a network folder

iTunes 8 for Windows will not add media files of type TV Show stored on a network share to the library. I have tested this with both DRM-protected files purchased from the iTunes store, and with unprotected files I have encoded myself. Any tips on how I might diagnose this further, or make it work as intended?
Steps to reproduce:
1. Share my Mac’s iTunes Music folder (containing a TV Shows subfolder with TV shows in it) on the network.
2. Verify iTunes 8 for Windows will successfully add music files contained in the shared folder to its local library (e.g. by File > Add to Library…).
3. Select File > Add to Library… and this time browse to the TV Shows subfolder. Select a particular show’s folder to import. iTunes appears to process the files, but fails silently to add them to the library.
4. Attempt to add the same files to the library via drag-and-drop, and by right-clicking a single file and choosing Open With > iTunes. Each attempt fails silently.
Partial work-around:
1. In iTunes 8 on the Mac, select an episode of a TV show, right-click and choose Get Info. On the Options tab, set Media Kind to Movie. Click OK. Assuming iTunes is configured to organize files automatically, iTunes silently moves the file to the Movies subfolder of the iTunes Music folder.
2. In iTunes 8 on Windows, choose File > Add to Library… and select the file that is now of type Movie on the network folder. The file is successfully added to the library as a TV Show!
3. In iTunes 8 on the Mac, change the Media Kind of the file in question back to TV Show. iTunes silently moves the file back to the subfolder of TV Shows.
4. In iTunes 8 on Windows, attempt to play the file. iTunes will complain that it cannot find the file at its designated location. Browse to the file’s new location on the network. Although iTunes will happily show the file in the library, it will fail to play it.

I've been having the same problem on my wife's Windows XP machine and after some experimentation determined that iTunes does not like the fact that there is a space in name of the "TV Shows" folder. Since iTunes wants to put TV Shows in this folder you can't change the name but I did find a pretty simple work around. From Windows Explorer I mapped a network drive directly to the "TV Shows" folder, so instead of selecting "...\iTunes Music\TV Shows" (or some level above that) as the folder when doing a File, Add Folder to Library..., I selected n:\ (the network drive I mapped) and it worked great.
I don't understand what the issue is with the space, especially since music stored on a network drive does have this problem, but this did the trick.

  • ITunes stalls when finding files-won't add to Library...

This started with trying to delete several duplicate files.  The cure turned out to be far worse than the disease.
So tonight I moved all copies of all my music to another hard drive.  Then I took a backup from a few weeks and (with Carbon Copy Cloner) ONLY backed up my iTunes music folders, hoping to start fresh.
When I open iTunes, I get that import, download or find music files screen.  If I go to add to Library nothing happens.  I select the link to search for files, and it works for anywhere from 3-20 minutes.  It gets to a point where it says "processing download.m4v" and then it stalls.  I waited over an hour once.  All you can do is force quit at that point.
The weirder thing is I have even gone into terminal to display hidden files and there is no file with that name anywhere on my computer.
I do have what is on my iPhone and I have it set so it won't sync.  My understanding is sync will replace my iphone with my iTunes library (which is nothing).
I thought there used to be a way to have the iPhone override the computer, or truly sync in that whatever is on one will be copied to the other.  But this is how I lost everything yesterday.
Even if i were to throw money at this problem right now, I have no idea how to get iTunes to import anything at this point.  I have gone in and deleted the preferences, and i have zapped the pRAM.
Any suggestions or reference much appreciated.

  • Music plays, won't add to library or ipod

its a specific album of mp3s just downloaded that will play in itunes just fine, but despite every obvious effort such as dragging into various parts of the interfaces and using the menu dialogs just can't seem to add these songs to the library and subsequently ipod. successfully done this plenty of times recently, even since the last time the main itunes folder was moved.  can there be something about this free download that is preventing it from being played on anything but home pcit was downloaded to? thanks -sh

  • ITunes 10.5 won't add to library OR play any audio files prior to update

I recently updated to iTunes 10.5 on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8, and iTunes won't add any of my old music files to the library, regardless of what directory they are in. The permissions on all files and folders of interest are read and write. I've tried directing the library to sevral different places, deleting the library files, etc. etc. Nothing works. Not only this, but iTunes won't even open ANY of the old files when I click on them, even though they all have the iTunes icon. Additionally, when I move the files in the library but don't tell iTunes in preferences, they still play (there are two songs in the library I just downloaded from the store to figure out what's going on). Anyone have any ideas here, this is a mess. Oh, forgot to mention I reinstalled iTunes as well and that didn't resolve any issues. Have tried restarting the computer also. Thanks for any thoughts,

  • Some tracks won't add to library

Switched from the Zune software to iTunes this week after getting a 1st gen iPod Touch and it was all going so well until I realised a whole bunch of my music was missing from my library. I've tried adding from the file menu and dragging/dropping but neither will work. I select the file or folder to add but absolutelt nothing happens, no error message, nothing. Strangely it seems to be specific albums that are affected rather than random individual tracks, but the albums in question seem to be tagged correctly, aren't corrupted, and aren't in any weirdly named directories or anything like that.
I've contemplated editing the iTunes Music Library.xml file to try and add them manually but I don't know if it would work (plus the xml is pretty complex). I also looked for a 3rd party app to use instead of iTunes but none will sync with iTouches.
Anyone have a solution for this?

Some audio formats don't sync with an iPod. Make sure all of them are either .AIF .WAV .MP3 .MP4 .ACC and maybe find a way to convert them if they aren't. I hope this helps, somewhat.

  • After moving the library, itunes shows less songs than music folder in finder does

         hi all.
after moving my library manually, i have this situation:
    1220 songs in music folder;
    1091 songs in itunes.
all the songs in itunes are regularly matched with the original file in the finder.
now. how to find the 29 files which are not in itunes? i don't care why this happened !!
    thanks to all in advance

in my itunes media folder there are not audio files! they are stored in music folder of the macintosh hd, as you can see from these screenshots. do you have any suggestion?

  • Why don't all my iTunes Library songs show up in my music folder

I have a lot of music in iTunes (16,000 plus songs) and they are stored on a LaCie external hard drive. Just recently I discovered that when I click on the file folder where all the music is stored, only files starting with A through B are listed. I can play anything in iTunes ~ nothing is missing, but the list of music when looking at the file with Windows Explorer is incomplete.
The reason this is of concern is because I am trying to back-up my music to DVDs (just for safe keeping in case of a hard drive crash). I have tried to do this several different ways, but nothing has worked. I suspect that it has something to do with the fact that maybe the directory of this large folder holding all my music files is incomplete or corrupted. If I run the Windows Back-up program on the folder, it acts as if only the A - B files are there and only creates a back-up of them. I know the rest exists because I can play them from iTunes. We are talking over 55 gigs of files that are not listed.
I am trying to back-up my library, but I think there is an underlying problem that is causing whatever method I try to fail. Is there anyone out there who can explain what is going on?
    My question is two fold:
Why doesn't the list of songs in iTunes match the contents of my music folder?
How can I creat backup DVD's of 60 gigs of music?
Thanks in advance for the help!

Is that not a way to relocate the files? In other words, I have 16,000 plus songs in iTunes and they are all playable. They must be on my external hard drive in the file I have named "Art's Music" (verified by the check you suggested in your first reply). Let's assume that I want to put them all on a different external hard drive (my C drive is not big enough). What steps should I use to relocate my entire library? The plan I had in mind was something I found at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748
    Is this going to work?
I am going to borrow a friend's unused hard drive for this and then put it back on my hard drve after I reformat it.

  • My Macbook Air won't come on - it just shows a picture of a folder with a question mark

My Mac was a blac screen when I came down this morning.
Icouldn't wake it up, so I decided to switch it off and on again.
Now it won't re-start it.It constantly displays a picture of a folder with a question mark across it.
    Is this a bad sign?

You need to use the computer's USB thumbdrive or Lion's recovery partition(press Option at startup) to repair the internal drive or install a new OS; if the Disk Utility doesn't see the drive, it needs to be plugged back in or replaced.

  • Won't boot from anything and shows flashing ? and Finder/Folder icon

What do I do to fix this? Thank you guys!

I'm trying to help but your answers and the information you've given isn't clear at all. If the answers to these questions weren't necessary I wouldn't ask them. If you're trying to boot with an older OS it won't work and that's not a hardware issue.
Yes, you have a hardware issue but since you don't want to supply any information neither I or anyone else can help you troubleshoot it.

  • Ringtones are in my library but won't show up in the tones folder

I have iTunes10 and an iPhone 5. The files are the correct format (m4r), they show up in my music library as a ringtone, the tones folder is already showing, but the ringtones do not show up in my tones folder.  I have already tried saving the files to the desktop and then deleting them from my music library and then opening the file from the desktop.  It automatically adds it back to my music library as a ringtone but does not add it to the tones folder.  Does anyone have any idea why iTunes won't allow me to put anything in my Tones folder and nothing will show up in there even if it is the right file format?
Also, because there is nothing in the tones folder when I connect my iPhone there is no tones tab at the top of the screen to allow me to select any syncing options.  The tones folder shows on the left side of the screen when I click on the iPhone to expand it but no tab at the top and it won't let me put anything in the tones folder under my iPhone either.  Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problem. I spent three hours on the phone with Apple Reps last night. They first said that they would have to reinstate ? my permissions, which they did (I had also lost some music) but after an hour of downloads, I still had no tones. Spoke with another Rep and they said if I purchased the Tones on Istore they should show up. I had. They didn't. Then said that it could be the "older" music was no longer compatible and it MUST be purchased through Itunes Store to show up in Tones automatically. So...I bought almost $20 of Tones last night after I hung up, and NONE Of them show up in my Tones folder. I have tried everything. I cannot move them by drag and drop.
This has been an ongoing problem for me for over a year, and so far, I cannot get any help.
I was asked if it was possible if I had different Libraries. I told them I don't know, since I have used Itunes since 2009 (and like the old version much better) and I have never changed my Itunes login or password. I have however, had different computers.  I hope someone can help with this issue.

  • ITunes crashed during "Get Info" now the movie won't add to the library

    Hi all,
I've been using iTunes with my Apple TV for over a year now, and this is the first time this has happened, and I'm at a loss on what to do to remedy it.
I added a number of movies to my iTunes (as i have done a number of times before), and selected them all, and clicked on Get Info, to move them from "Home Movies" to "Films", nothing new there, but this time when i clicked ok this time, for whatever reason iTunes stopped responding, and came up with the usual error of "iTunes has stopped responding....", so after I get returned to my desktop I went back in to iTunes and the movies i'd added weren't in "Home Movies" so i figured, "oh well, it must have completed it anyway, and then crashed", so i went and checked my movie list, and they aren't there either.
I figured that it just hadn't saved the fact i'd imported them, and went to add them again, but it just won't add them... i've tried adding them as multiple files, and adding them as individuals, but still to no avail.
Can anyone shed any light, or point me in the right direction for correcting this issue?
Thanks in advance for reading, and any help anyone can offer.

    Hi beau_nidle,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If iTunes quit unexpectedly while saving changes, and now will not import the movies again, I'd suggest rebuilding your iTunes library. See this article for help with this troubleshooting step:

The iTunes application should be installed on the system drive. You may need to repair iTunes to fix that error regarding a missing .exe.

  • 11.2.1 won't add files to library

When I updated to 11.2.1, I found that I can no longer add files to my iTunes. I'm trying to add mp3 files by double-clicking on them, right-clicking and "opening with iTunes" using the "Add to library" function off the file menu...to no avail. Sometimes, I'll see the status window showing that files are being added, but I cannot find them in my library. Repeated searches of all kinds of failed. While it implies that they are being added, I do not see them.
So, in essence, I can play songs that are currently in my library, but not add anything new. This ***** because I just bought a bunch of stuff and can't listen to it, nor get it on my iPhone.
Not sure what to do to solve this. I've of course restarted my computer several times and that makes no difference so far.
    Please help.

    Hello there, LoveSavesLives.
The following Knowledge Base article provides some great guidelines in regards to importing content to iTunes:
Adding music and other content to iTunes
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1473
    Particularly:
Adding content on your computer to iTunes
iTunes helps you add digital audio and video files on your computer directly to your iTunes library. You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes for Windows can convert these files to one of these formats. You can also add video content in QuickTime or MPEG-4 format to iTunes. To learn how to add these files to iTunes follow the steps below.
    Open iTunes
From the File menu, choose one of the following choices:
    MacAdd to Library
    Windows
    Add File to Library
    Add Folder to Library
Navigate to and select the file or folder that you want to add
If iTunes is set to "Copy files to the iTunes Music folder when adding to library," iTunes will copy all content that is added to the iTunes library to the iTunes Music folder. To adjust this setting or change the location of this folder, go to the Advanced tab in iTunes Preferences.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • I click on "add to library" and the file shows up in my iTunes media file, but not in my iTunes.

I click on "add to library" and the file shows up in my iTunes media file, but not in my iTunes.

  • ITunes won't add large files to the library

I use software to convert my personal DVDs into Apple TV format via H.264 decoder for 720p resolution. The resulting files are typically larger than 3GB for a 2 hour movie. Now iTunes won't add them to my library so I can't sync them or stream them to my Apple TV.
Any advice? Is there a setting in iTunes that I overlooked?
I have tried the mpg4 conversion setting for 480 resolution and those files will load into iTunes and stream to Apple TV, but they are grainy and a horrible quality. So for those saying I don't need to use the H.264, I am picky and want a high quality resolution.
Thanks for any advice and help.

It is possible that there is something else wrong with my files. Several mp4 files worked fine prior to getting a new iMac and transferring the files over (using ext HDDs, not the migration wizard). Quicktime won't even open the files in question. It states that they are not movie files.
Sounds odd, they may be corrupted.
Try enusring the file extensions are either .mp4 or .m4v (or .mov perhaps).
3GB+ for a file intended for AppleTv 2 hours long sounds excessive and may exceed AppleTv playback specs but it shouldn'tbother quicktime. If the files don't open in QT they may well be corupted.
