Won't allow me to change my hard drive icon

Hello anyone! Here's my problem...I've been using Mac since 1985 and this has always been how you did this and now it's not working, has something changed?
1. Copy icon, picture, photo
2. Click once on hard drive icon on desktop and choose Get Info
3. Click on hard drive icon in Get Info window
4. Paste
5. Voila!
The blue halo that usually appears around the icon in the Get Info window is not appearing anymore. I've tried unlocking the Owner and changing from System to me as user and that doesn't help. I've tried renaming the hard drive and no luck. Has anyone else had this issue and can it be resolved. I don't want Cookie Monster as my icon anymore! Thanks!

There are a number of possible problems:
1. If you use Preview to copy the pix you might not have actually gotten the picture onto the Clipboard, so there is nothing to paste. You can check this by either "Show Clipboard" from the Finder's Edit menu, or try pasting first onto a new folder. If it doesn't paste into the folder let us know. It could be that you haven't gotten the desired picture "active" in Preview--if, for instance, it is an icns file you need to select the 128x128 icon and then click in the actual picture part of Preview's window, then copy.
2. If your picture is indeed on the Clipboard and will paste onto a folder, but you can't paste onto the drive because the wee GetInfo icon won't highlight you've got a permissions problem. I've had luck changing the icon by TEMPORARILY giving Everyone read and write permissions to the drive, using GetInfo.
As a last resort you will have to use the Terminal, there are several different things you can do, of various levels of complexity.

  • How in the HECK can I change my Hard Drive icon??!??!!

I've tried searching these discussion forums for how to do this, but the question has always remained unanswered! Does ANYbody know how to use this? I'd buy applecare but I'm a student and can't afford it. Would somebody please figure out how to make it so that you can paste a new icon on top of the standard icon for 10.3.9? It's driving me crazy that after I copy the icon I want to use for my hard drive that I can't paste it on top.
And I've tried doing a permissions repair in Disk Utility.
    400 MHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That's how other people do it, HVlaar; it's the standard procedure. Works fine for me. Are you logged into an admin account? Have you considered that changing your hard drive icon probably isn't an important thing to do anyway?

  • App store keeps asking for old owner's password when I try to download updates, even though I am logged into my Apple account. It won't allow me to change ID to mine.

I bought a used iMac recently, and sometimes the app store asks for the user password of the previous owner (and displays former owner's ID). It won't allow me to change ID to mine, even though I am signed into store with my own account (and this is shown in dropdown menu).  How can I make the store recognize my ID for downloads?

It is showing updates because your machine is tied to the original purchase and will remain so until you wipe the drive.
As you purchased it used and the seller obviously did not do what he was supposed to do and that is erase the hard drive and reinstall the original system, you will run in to far more difficult problems when you need to reinstall for whatever reason. The new licensing requirements are that any mac is sold with the original OS - any OS or app obtained at the app store is NOT transferable and the buyer needs to purchase their own license. That means you will not be able to reinstall the OS.
At some point, you will need to try to get either the original install disks (from the seller or Apple) and wipe your drive and reinstall. Then you can download your own licensed copy of Mavericks and any apps you want.

Ummmm no it didn't.  iOS only runs on iPhones, iPads and iPods.

  • I have changed my email address.  Now I cannot access I Cloud as it won't allow me to change the email address.

I have changed my email address and now cannot use I Cloud as it won't allow me to change details without deleting old email address.
How can I change the old email as I have forgotten password and cannot have it sent to me via the old email as it is enabled.
I would like to be able to turn on I Cloud on all my devices, I phone, I pad and Apple Mac desktop.  Help.

    Hey cnasmond,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are having issue relating to changing your iCloud account. The following articles may help to resolve your issue:
iOS 7: If you're asked for the password to your previous Apple ID when signing out of iCloud
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS5223
    3. Change your Apple ID temporarily
If signing out and back in to iMessage or FaceTime didn't work, try these steps:
    1. Change your Apple ID to the Apple ID you used previously. You shouldn't need to verify the email address.
    2. Tap Settings > iCloud and try to sign out.
    3. Change your Apple ID to the new email address that you want to use. You'll need to verify the email address.
    4. Tap Settings > iCloud and sign in with the new Apple ID.
    Thanks,

  • TouchSmart IQ546T Music "Settings" won't allow me to change my library to itunes

I would like to use my Itunes Library instead of the HP Touchsmart Library, I've seen/read all the tutorials about changing the library under "settings" but the icon to click "Use my Itunes Media Library" is greyed out and won't allow me to change to that setting. I verified that the location of my library was in the "music" folder. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

  • I changed the hard drive on my laptop, since then my iPhone does allow me to change my music. What can I do?

I changed my hard drive on my laptop, so my laptop is pretty much brand new again. Anyway, I connected my iphone to the laptop to transfer some new songs onto my phone but every time I try and drag a song over I get the red prohibited circle. I cannot add nor delete songs however, my Ipad works fine. There aren't any problems.
I have used the 'rest all settings' option but that didn't resolve anything. Would I have to chose the 'erase all content and settings' or is there another way I can get around this issue?
Oh, I use Windows 7 on my laptop and I have an iPhone 4
    Thanks

    You should be able to:
Backup the device to the new installation
Transfer your purchases into a newly authorized library
Recover any other media using third party tools as suggested in this post from forum regular Zevoneer
Restore the device from the backup
This process should switch the association of the device to the new library, preserving the data and settings in your apps.
May also be prudent to attempt a backup to iCloud directly from the device before you start... Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup > iCloud Backup > On. It won't save any media but it would preserve the general account settings and documents in case anything goes wrong while you are trying to extract your other data.
When you get it all fixed, make a backup!

  • Changed internal hard drive but it won't start up using it

Thought I had everything covered but i seem to have missed something whilst changing my hard drive.
Having installed the new hard drive i then erased it using the mac os extended (journeled?) button. I then dragged over my folders etc from my carbon copy cloned external hard drive. i then attempted to reboot but the apple symbol on the start up went crazy with a question mark and danger type sign.
So having done a bit of research i don't think my macbook pro can see the new hard drive as its start up disk. its not showing up in the system preferences startup disk section.
Does anyone see an error from what I've written? Should I carbon copy clone my old hard drive files to the new hard drive rather just drag them over?
    cheers

Well, i carbon cloned it back again from the external hard drive and now its working fine. i hope thats it but we'll see.
    That is the correct procedure.

  • HT5149 Final Cut Pro x won't recognise any of my external hard drives

Hi, I am sorry to start a new thread on this topic as I am aware there are already numerous threads. I have been searching through them for a solution to my problem and nothing appears to be working.
As stated in the title, Final cut X won't recognise any of my external hard drives. When I open Final cut x all I see is an "Untitled" event in the library and not even a mention of my internal drive.
I have checked that all my hard drives are formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) which I can confirm they all are. I have a spare hard drive which currently has no content on it and I have just reformatted it using disk utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). This hard drive is not showing up in the library either. I mention this as some of the suggested solutions appear to be that an external hard drive not showing up might be because of folders within the hard drive labeled something such as "Video" "Audio" or "DCIM,"  as this may cause Final cut x to see it as a camera device and not a hard drive. This hard drive has absolutely nothing on it and has been reformatted just 10 minutes ago, yet it still does not show up in my final cut x library. The weird thing is... all the hard drives show up in Motion 5.
I am really stuck and I don't know what to do. I am currently in the process of re-installing final cut x to see if that will change anything. I will post what happens as soon as it has been reinstalled. I can provide screenshots as soon as it has been reinstalled.
Does anyone have a solution to this? Has anyone had the same problem and found out what I must be doing wrong? I would greatly appreciate any comments or feedback which might provide some insight into what I am doing wrong. I feel like this must be an error on my part as I am not that adept at using final cut x.
    Thanks,
    Chris

I am using the latest version. Currently re-installing final cut x which will bring me up to date.
Thank you for taking the time to reply. That makes a lot of sense.
However I still can't understand something... I only have 100gb free on my internal drive and I want to optimize a large amount of footage for my video projects. How do I save my projects to this hard drive if it is not showing up in my library?
I appreciate I am probably being very stupid and am very grateful of any insight!
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • I am changing my hard drive and want to copy my old hard drive to the new one.

I went to the apple store with a bad hard drive in my macbook pro. The apple store said change the hard drive, they did, but I wanted to save the old hard drive to get everything off of it. So, I borrowed a sata enclosure and I was able to get everything from the orignial drive (which wasn't really broken) onto my external harddrive. Then I started up the Computer, but didn't use the Migration Assistant (Dumb, I know). Now I need to get everything that was on the original drive and put it where it is suppose to go. Is there a simple solution?

If this external drive is a boot drive (has the OSX on it), you can swap it into your MBP or use Disk Utility>Restore to clone the data to the internal MBP HDD.
    Ciao.

  • Hard Drive icon won't open and menu bar flashes off and on

All of a sudden, in the middle of the day, my eMac went haywire. I can launch apps and docs are one the desktop. But I cannot open the Hard Drive icon. If I double-click on it (or used Command-O from keyboard), the icon won't open. And when I attempt to open it, the Finder Menu Bar begins flashing off and on (vanishing, reappearing, vanishing) across the top of the screen. I haver rebooted, run disk utility to repair permissions, even booted from TechTools to run its diagnostics. But still no access to the Hard Drive icon. I logged out and logged in as a TEST user, and same thing happens even when logged in that way. Literally, this happened in an instant. One minute the eMac was fine, then this started. Anyone else seen this? -- david

If the problem exists in both your regular account and your Test account odds are that it is at the system level. You can try a Safe boot (hold down the shift key at startup) to see if there is a third party startup item or one of the optional Apple functions that is causing the problem. You could also boot from the installer disk and use the Disk Utility->Repair Disk function. If you have a utility such as Tiger Cache Cleaner which will do a deep cache clean you can also try that.

Green is a marketing term for a drive designed for lower power use, lower noise, and lower heat. The side effect is that it's not as fast. Black drives are designed for highest performance, so they might use more power and run hotter and noisier. I upgraded my Apple Time Capsule with a green drive, but I put a black drive in my Mac Pro.

As in cars, RPM is not the sole determinant of performance. In some cases, a newer drive at a lower RPM is faster than an older drive at a higher RPM, when the newer drive uses better technology. I have heard that some of today's high-capacity 5400RPM drives are faster than 7200RPM drives of lower capacity simply because the very high density of a 1TB drive means more data passes under the head even at a lower RPM. Certainly there have been times in Apple's past when new lower RPM drives were faster than higher RPM drives of the previous generation, a notable example being when 4200RPM perpendicular recording drives were introduced and beat 5400RPM drives.
Yes, generally RPM can be used to compare, but it is important to realize it isn't always true.

  • I had to change my hard drive, now i'v tried to reinstall itunes, it is saying i have to restore my ipod touch to factory settings, will i loose all my films by doing this, as now my ipod wont work anyway unless i restore ?

I had to change my hard drive, now i'v tried to reinstall itunes it says i have to restore my iopd touch to factory settings and will loose my files. I have a few films on there and they show up on my purchases. If i restore, will i be able to get my films back ? as at the moment my ipod wont work now untill i restore anyway.

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your ipod. Only if you back up your device manually before syncing, you can restore from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Here's how to:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your ipod to your computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the ipod for the first time.

either something got damaged when you installed the hard drive or you need to perform a pram reset (other possibilites could have occured, these are the ones I think)
