Won't boot and CD is stuck in drive

Ok, so I've searched as best as I could so I do appologise if this is semi repeated. The other day I came home and my ibook wouldn't boot up. I've had hardrive failure before which is what i figured it was. I had a friend run the hardware diagnostic on it to see what the problem could be and it turned out to be the harddrive. Since then though, I can't get the cd out of the drive to try to boot to either the install cd or anything else. I've tried holding down eject and it only ejects a tiny bit. as well as space bar, trackpad button and numerous other keyboard combos. When I boot it up now, it just goes right to the diagnostic cd. I can't get it to do anything else =\ So, it's a G4 iBook I believe 1.07.

Hi,
Welcome to the Discussions.
Try using open firmware command to eject it.
To eject a disc using firmware:
1. Restart the computer.
2. When you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F keys. (The Command key has an Apple on it.)
3. Release the keys when you see a white welcome screen.
4. At the prompt, type:
eject cd
5. Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject the disc, and "ok" appears on the screen when the action is complete. Now insert your install disc in the drive.
6. Type:
mac-boot
7. Press Return and hold the "c" key to start from the disc.

  • MacBook osx 10.6 won't boot and has DVD stuck in drive

I have an older MacBook running osx 10.6 and it recently became unable to boot up.  It gets stuck on a gray screen with a dark gray apple logo, a spinning icon and a progress bar which goes all the way up and disappears.
I have tried the following from this page: Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
-safe boot verbose, it gets partway through and then black screens
-resetting NVRAM / PRAM, it seems to just be trying to boot and persists in the problem.
It has a DVD in the drive and I cannot eject it any way I try, there is no pinhole to force eject and the eject arrow or left mouse key don't do a thing, and as I can't boot into safe mode or any other way I don't know how to eject it, and because the DVD is in there I can't reinstall the OS.
Any ideas?  I do have an external USB dvd reader I could try attaching to it to install the OS anew but not sure that would work...
    thanks
    Tamar

OS X- Gray progress bar appears under Apple logo during startup
    If you need to reinstall:
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • Won't boot and fans go mental

since updating to 10.5.5 my 17" iMac has began to fail. not sure if this is a coincidence or something to do with the recent updates.
after about 10mins it started to freeze up with the spinning beach ball of death
then it would freeze after 2mins
now it won't boot and the fans go mental and it shuts itself off.
i held down some keys to get the text up of the booting process and first it went on about "intelPSU missing" or something and finally would say "I/O error" "14 majors" and stuff
could it be the hard drive?
    could it be the ram?
could it be the power supply?
    stupid mac
i can get it into target disc mode but my macbook pro doesn't see it.

It's probably a combination of a failing power supply unit and logic board. I suggest you take it in to be looked at.
Try booting from your install disc and running Disk Utility to check things out.
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Reboot from your hard drive and repair permissions.

A neighbor had the same problem and asked for my assistance.  I created a rescue disk using my HP desktop running Windows 7 64-bit.  Even though her HP laptop was running Windows 7 32-bit, the disk allowed me to boot into windows on her computer.  I then went to the HP web site and downloaded the latest BIOS and then flashed it to the BIOS chip following the instructions that came with the download.  Everything is working fine now.  Hope this helps.

  • Pro Won't boot and need major help!

All of a sudden my MP won't boot. It turns on but won't boot and can't figure out why.
I had just shut it down and let it cool off for about 10 minutes because I had to move it upstairs to my internet connection to register some software....and then it wouldn't boot up. I've tried and re-tried and no go. Opened it up and re-sat the drives and RAM thinking something got loose. There's 4 drives in there including a backup clone. I guess what I need to do is figure out how to boot from the clone. Will pulling the drives and just inserting the clone do that?

It appears that one of the four drive slots in your Mac Pro already has a clone of the OS. If so, then all you need to do is to hold down the option key after you press the power button until you get a choice of which HD to boot from. You should see both your original boot drive and your clone HD. Select the clone HD, and hopefully you will boot up and be back in business. If you wish to continue to boot from the clone drive, then you will need to set that up in System Preferences as your boot drive. I would suggest that as soon as you get your Mac Pro to boot from the clone drive that you run Disk Warrior on that HD or at least try and repair it from within Apple's Disk Utility program. If your Mac Pro still will not boot from that HD, then it may be beyond repair and have a hardware failure.

  • Imac g5 won't boot and cd stuck in drive

    please help -
my imac won't boot up (right now we're assuming a faulty power supply, the original already went and had to be replaced). furthermore, there's a cd i need to get at in the cd drive - is there a manual eject for the 2004 imac g5's?
    thanks!!!

Welcome to Discussions - What model Mac do you have? You can try lying it face down on a soft towel and pressing the eject button as you try to boot. If you have already had the power supply replaced, call Apple immediately and tell them, they should take care of it.

  • Power mac g5--won't boot, and I can't sleep

    Hi all,
I'm hoping someone is awake and can help. My power mac g5, circa 2005, has always come with some problems, specifically, kernal panics. It's not bad RAM, but I have never tested the video card. Oddly enough, it seems to go down most often in the most in simple internet applications.
Today, it froze in Firefox and I cannot get it to reboot. It stalls/freezes in the gray apple screen. Called my IT friend, and he said to zap the PRAM. That brought it back up for a second, and then it froze again. I replaced the battery, no results.
I can't get it to boot in safe mode or even single-user- it freezes up as well. I certainly can't get it up long enough to load the boot disk.
It may be garbage...I can accept that...but it is holding hours of work. Will I be able to retrieve this??

Hi, I'm having same problem. G5 1.8 dual processor purchased March '05, won't boot. Not from cd either.
Took it to the apple geniuses and first was told it might be a bad board or processor and that I might as well just buy a new system. Well, I can't, because I still need to run some classic applications for business reasons, and because of that I'm stuck at Mac OS X 10.3.9. Anyway... I left my system with the apple geniuses and got a call 3 days later saying it was fixed @ no charge and that the 3rd party USB card was bad. They pulled it and said all was well.Great!, saving me $800 charge for a new board and over $430 for a new processor. So on the way home I buy a new USB hub get home start up and nothing! No change. Back to the Apple Store and after some testing this time I'm told it's definitely a bad hard drive. So, on the way home I buy a new hard drive. Get back, install the new HD and, you guessed it, can't format the disk, system won't boot from CD. BACK TO THE APPLE GENIUSES AGAIN! Now they tell me it's definitely the logic board. After 5 days I'm back where I started... except I have an old USB card that is most likely fine and new USB hub and a new HD I purchased because the Apple Geniuses told me they were bad! I asked them if they would apply a credit of some sort for the unnecessary purchases and my time (The closest Apple Store is 30 miles away), They politely said we appologize for the inconvenience, but no, we can't do that. I've been using Macs of all kinds since the early 1980's. And have never had one fail! Since I started looking into G5 problems, I've found many others with this startup issue. I feel there is a known issue with this series that apple is intentionally sweeping under the rug instead of issuing a recall or credit.

  • Lion iMac won't boot and can't re-install OS as disk locked.

Hi, my iMac was purchased in 2011 and is running Lion, Mac OS X 10.7.5.
On Monday it stopped booting and gets stuck at the apple logo and spinning thingy.
I have tried to Verify and Repair the Macintosh HD disk but both fail. Next step I wanted to try was to re-install the OS which I understand will keep my settings and data. When I go into this option the disc is greyed out and it says "The disk is locked".
Do I need to unlock the disc, if so then any ideas how I do this ??
What other diagnostics should I try ??
Many thanks in advance for help.

When you try to install and check your hard drive, and you starting the computer from the recovery partition.
Restarting your computer by holding down the command + R, Additional if you have access to DiskWarrior you should give that a try to repair your hard drive.

  • Powerbook Won't boot - And disk permissions won't repair

    My powerbook G4 won't boot normally or in safe mode but will load up using the leopard disk to instilation page. Once there the folowing issues become aparrent;
    1. Not enough space to archive and install
    2. Disk persmssions can't be verified or repared (the disk can be both verified and repaired and appears normal)Have waited overnight for this to complete and it hasn't.
    3. Whilst it connects to networks it doesn't appear on them to allow data to be removed to make space
    4. Attemting to use disk utility restore function to copy the hard disk onto a external hard drive fails (bar about 1/8 of the way across predictions stat at 1hr58 and reach 6 hours when the powerbook starts making a lot of noise nad the external hard drive activity appears to halt)
Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Might be worth a shot trying to transfer in TDM, once booted from the install disk:

  • Powerbook 12 inch won't boot and I need to create a startup CD/DVD

My son's PB 12" won't boot up. We are on vacation and I have my 13 macbook with me, but none of the support disks.. I am wondering if there is a way to create a boot CD/DVD from mine to use with his, to hopefully get his computer working again. Any help would be great!

Hi, Ross. No, there isn't. The OS that runs your Intel-based MacBook won't run at all on the PPC-based Powerbook.
Hold down the Command and S keys on the Powerbook while turning it on, and use fsck in Single-User Mode to attempt file system repairs, as described in this article.

  • Arch Linux won't boot (and Linux in general)

    Hello everyone,
I've been having this problem for about 3 days now. I finally made an account and post the problem since I can't find a solution (I solved most of my past problems by searching forums and googling so I had never posted before).
So, I was installing Arch linux and Windows 7 on my machine (eee pc 1201t) but had problems booting into linux. First I installed Windows and it worked fine, then I installed Arch linux (this isn't my first time) and rebooted after finishing the installation. But my laptop just won't boot. It just displayed a blinking cursor on the top left of the screen. No error messages whatsoever. It was my first time encountering the problem so I thought reinstalling would do the trick. But it didn't. So I started researching on the same problems on google and discovered that it could be either a HD problem or corrupted MBR or some other problem. My drive works fine, since I can copy data onto it using a live cd (Ubuntu) and Windows works fine with it.
I'm thinking of using "dd" command on my drive and repair the MBR. I would like to know if you guys have encountered the same problem before and what kind of solution you applied.
Note: I also tried installing Ubuntu on my machine but the result was the same.

ngoonee wrote:Live CD, setup grub again, and profit?
I tried this first, had no luck or maybe I wasn't doing it right.
nixpunk wrote:So are you booting into windows using grub or just ntldr?
My laptop boots using ntldr only. Grub does not seem to work. I tried installing Arch and Ubuntu but I had the same result (blinking cursor on the top left of the screen).
schuay wrote:As always with boot problems, you will need to provide some more data about your setup. Output of 'df -h', contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst, install location of grub, etc. Without that, other people can only make guesses about the possible solution
I'll keep that in mind. Sorry for the lack of details regarding my problem. I will try to add as much information as I can the next time I post.
Anyway, I think I solved the problem. I zeroed the MBR on my HD by issuing the command "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 and grub installed just fine. Thanks for the reply everyone.
