Won't boot from OS X install disc

I'm trying to put a second installation of OS X onto a second SATA drive in my MP, so I put in my OS X installation disc, double click "Install OS X and bundled software" and then click the button that says "Restart" to begin installation.... but it just boots back into my primary OS X drive instead of beginning installation from the OS X disc.
What do I do?

Insert the installation DVD and shut down your Mac. Then start-up your Mac while holding down the C key, this will force your Mac to start up from the DVD. So first press down the C key and while holding it down press the powerbutton (keep holding down the key until you see the gray Apple on your screen). The start-up from the CD can take some time, so be patient.

IMac won't boot from OS X install disc!

I'm needing to do some internal hard drive repairs but the system won't boot from the install disc! I've restarted it tons of times while holding down "C" and it just bypasses it and boots right into OS X. It restarts as normal with the chime (I am holding down "C") then the Apple logo comes up, then the spinning circle thing, but it just goes right into OS X. Help!

Let's be sure you are doing it properly.
First, you must use the OS X Installer Disc One that came with your computer. Carefully check both surfaces for scratches, dirt, fingerprints and if so clean it carefully with a very soft cleaning cloth that won't scratch the disc.
Second, insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when the spinning gear appears below the dark gray Apple logo.

MacBook Pro won't boot from HD or Install CD

I have a 15" MacBook Pro running Lion. It won't boot from the HD or Install CD.
1. When I try to boot it from the HD, it makes the boot sound and displays the Apple logo. The small "working" wheel spins for about 20 seconds, and then gets stuck mid-spin.
2. When I try to boot from the Install CD, I eventually get a gray screen with a large power button image and the text "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button."
I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC per another post, but nothing changed. I have also tried to boot it from an Ubuntu 11.10 CD, which also got stuck.
Any idea what the problem could be and next steps I should take?

My Mac started freezing (colored pinwheel) every time I tried using any application (i.e. Safari, iPhoto). After restarting for the 2nd time, it would no longer boot - makes start up sound but gets stuck on gray screen w/ apple icon. I tried resetting PRAM also - did nothing. I decided to reinstall OS; problem now is my HD is nowhere to be found! I am a tech dummy so this is way beyond my comprehension...I'm not seeing my HD from the Disk Utility either???
Side question...I backed up my files (mostly pics JPEG and videos) on DVD (had to compress to save). Why can't I open files on PC?

Macbook won't boot from Hard Drive of Disc Drive!

So I bought a Macbook (Mid-2010) from a friend recently and I can't seem to get it to boot from the hard drive or optical drive. At first I tried booting from the HD it already had and when I didn't have any luck, I went out and bought a new one. It still won't boot. I'll turn it on, it'll chime and will try to load, and then I'll get the "You need to restart your." message. I've tried booting from disc (Leopard & Snow Leopard) and will still get the same message. I have also tried all possible startup key combinations and haven't had any luck. I don't have the original DVD it came with. So was wondering if any of you guys out there have experienced this. I would like to hear your tips before I go to an Apple Store and see if they can get it fixed for me.

I don't have the original DVD it came with
You will need those discs. Replacement disc(s) from Apple: You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
You can check the startup disk using the Disk Utility application located in /Applications/Utilities if you can boot in Safe Mode, but you cannot make repairs without the install disc.

Power Mac G4 won't startup from OS X install disc

I have a Power Mac G4 that needs to have the Classic environment on it. I've done some checking and apparently this isn't possible with 10.4, so I'm trying to install an old version of teh OS. I have the Power Mac G4 OS X 10.2.1 install discs that came with the computer, as well as the Mac OS 9 Install disc.
When I try to boot from the OS X install disc, nothing really happens. I've tried running the application on the disc taht automatically restarts the computer to the install disc. I've tried restarting while holding down the C key. I've tried selecting it as the startup disc in system preferences. I've tried holding down the option key when restarting, and it doesn't even list the install disc as an option.
The only thing different that happens when I try any of these methods (except the option key, where nothing different happens at all) is when starting up, a small bluish-purplish folder with the "mac face" on it shows up for about 5 seconds, and then it continues on to start up normally in my current OS 10.4.9, just like it would when doing a normal restart.
Oh yeah, and I've tried this with multiple copies of the OS X install discs that are specifically for G4s and the same thing happens, so I'm pretty sure it's not the CD.
Can anyone help me in my quest to get a version of OS 9 running on my computer? Thanks in advance for the help!!!

I've done some checking and apparently this isn't possible with 10.4...
I have no idea where you might have got that info, but it is not correct. OSX 10.4 (Tiger) does indeed work with Classic. Classic needs to be OS 9.1 or later; OS's 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 have better compatibility in that role.
I've tried this with multiple copies of the OS X install discs that are specifically for G4s...
Your machine will not be able to use any original OSX Install CDs that are for a different model G4 - the original disks that ship with a machine are specific to that particular model.
Since your G4 apparently came with a separate Software Install CD for OS 9, that is what you should use to get OS 9 onto the hard drive. Boot to that CD, then run the installer app - Mac OS Install.
Depending what version is installed by that disk, you may want to update it to a later version of OS 9 via download updater. However, if your G4 originally came also with OSX install disks, then the separate OS 9 Install CD is at least OS 9.2.
It would help to know the exact model G4 you have, including processor speed and number of processors.

Cannot access boot from Mac OSX install Disc-frozen cursor

Twice a month I do some housekeeping and clean up my Mac--run scripts, verify preferences, repair permissions, etc. Quarterly I boot from the installation disc to renew any start up info that may have become corrupted.
My IMACG5 won't allow me to do this now. I put the disc in, and shut down the machine. I start it up again while holding down the C key but when it is finished booting from the disc my mouse cursor is frozen on the screen and I cannot acess anything. I have a battery operated mouse and I always check to make sure there is sufficient battery life.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is up and how I resolve this issue? At this point I won't be able to wipe my hard drive and re-boot everything fresh from my installaion discs because the cursor is frozen.

I put the disc in, and shut down the machine.I start it up again while holding down the C key but when it is finished booting from the disc my mouse cursor is frozen on the screen and I cannot acess anything.
I hope you mean Restart and not Shut Down.
Insert CD, under Apple drop down menu -> restart after/ at the chime hold the c key dowm till the gear/ wheel stops spinning .

IMac won't boot from Windows USB install stick

I have a iMac 7.1, the first gen Intel iMac, now running Moutain Lion 10.8.2. I installed Windows 7 via bootcamp two years ago via a flash disk, and the installation was smooth and easy. Now I want to try some Windows 8. I used the Windows USB install tool to clone the install disk into a flash drive and tested the flash drive on a windows computer first. It was working properly. But my iMac just couldn't boot from the flash disk when I pressed the option button during start-up. There's no icon for the flash disk. Then I clone the old Windows 7 install ISO into the flash disk, it wouldn't show in the boot options either! Why? Is it because of some firmware update? Why the same Windows 7 install image I used two years a ago can't boot now for the same iMac? Please help. Thanks!

I believe mende1's response is slightly incorrect. On older Mac computers that came with an internal DVD drive the only way to install Windows on those Mac's is from that internal DVD drive. Even if you connect an external DVD drive OS X and or the Mac computer Firmware will not allow the Win install DVD to boot from that external DVD drive. It must be done from the internal DVD drive. So if yours has failed then you would need to have it replaced before you can install Windows on your Mac.
I know this from personally trying to install Windows from an external DVD drive even when there is an internal DVD still in the system. My late 2011 MBP would not load the Win install from the external DVD drive but would from the internal DVD drive.

MacBook Won't Boot From Install Disc

I was getting the "No Airport Card INstalled" error notice, so I replaced the airport card. Very easy operation really. With a new card in, I still get the same error notice. Mind you the Bluetooth works, and it's on the same card.
If I unplug the battery, and reconnect it, the airport will usually then come up, but disappear as soon as the machine wakes from sleep.
I was thinking software corruption, but now I find that I cannot boot from the Apple install disc. Using the "C" key or the "Option" key.
I have also now found that I can't reset the PRAM using the Option-Command-P-R key combionation either.
It's NOT the keyboard, as it works in every other way.
So still thinking software corruption somewhere, but unable to boot from the install disc to do a wipe and reload of the OS.
Need ideas before I bite the bullet and take to the shop.

Help!
I've been having some issues with my iBook G4 recently (it seems every program will randomly quit unexpectedly and it's generally rather slow) so I was thinking I would just wipe the drive and start afresh.
But I can't seem to boot from the OSX install disc. There's an option in the disc itself to restart and that didn't do anything and pressing "c" while restarting still starts things up normally. I've tried zapping NVRAM, PRAM, I went through OF and did reset-all and set-defaults (I'm not even sure if that was necessary- I'm desperate!) and nothing will work.
Help, please!

In order to erase your internal hard drive, you have to be booted from something else. I think you could do this from another Mac in FireWire Target Disk Mode, but I have never done this myself.

Is there a reason you don't want to use FireWire?
The biggest problem still seems to be that either your disc or your optical drive is not working properly. Even if you do succeed in erasing the drive, there is still the problem of reinstalling the OS. I think there are methods of doing this with FireWire Target Disk Mode, but I have just never done it myself, so I hesitate to give any instructions.
If you can, you might see if you can borrow an external optical drive and see if you can boot using that. If so, you can erase and reformat your internal drive using Disk Utility and reinstall the OS that way. If an external optical drive won't work, there may be a problem with your disc.

PB won't boot from drive or disc: HELP!

I can turn the machine on with the power button, and the screen displays the grey background with Apple logo, and the spinning barred circle underneath. The circle just spins and spins. Also, the machine is suddenly very loud--fan or drive making a clattering sound.
I have tried to boot from the Hardware Test disc. I could get to the Open Firmware screen but when I try the "mac-boot" command, I get the following error message: "Invalid memory access." Also, the "eject" command would not open the drive device (though the disc did eject when I powered down).
Also tried to boot from the Software Install disc. I can hear the drive reading the disc, but once the spinning circle comes up nothing else happens.
Now I cannot eject the Software Install disc.
Next steps? All help appreciated!!

Let me see if I got this right.
1. You can't boot normally from the internal HDD.
2. You can boot from the Hardware Test disk, but no "Mac-boot"
3. You can't install from the Install Disk.
First try resetting the PRAM (Hit start button while holding down CommandOption+PR) and let it chime at least three times. Then release and see if it boots.
If it won't boot restart and when it gets stuck in the Apple Logo grey screen do a hard reset (hold down the Power button for 10 seconds or so until it goes off) then try restarting.
If you manage to get it to boot Open Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility) select your HDD and run Repair Disk.
Report back on any progress of lack of it.

MacBookPro updated to 10.5.6 won't boot from 10.6.3 DVD it came with

I have a clone image 10.6.3 on an external hard drive also, and when I try to select it as the start up drive for a machine that often freezes on start it says it won't bless that drive as a startup disk, and it won't boot from the original install dvd. it's only 3 months old - does it go to hardware repair?

Since your machine is so new, I'd definitely make an appointment at the genius bar and have them take a look at it. It's one thing if it won't boot from an external clone, since there could be a problem with the external drive or how it's set up, but if it freezes and won't boot to the install disc, there's something wrong.
The Apple Store can run a hardware test from their store feed and it just takes a few minutes. That might be a good place to start. Take your install DVD along when you go--possibly it is what has a problem.

27" iMac won't boot from anything BUT the main drive

My lovely 27" iMac is in perfect working condition, but I thought I'd try to install a OS on a large SD card to see if I would gain any speed.
In the process of doing that (cause I never got that far) I discover that the iMac won't boot from the original install DVD. It simply spits out the DVD when I try to insert into the drive. I'v managed to make an image of the DVD (in a different mac) onto the SD card in order to try an boot from that. No luck. I've tried to insert a original install DVD from my Mac Pro into the iMac, which it reads fine and well, and when I tap the restart button it restarts, but stop with a white screen doing boot up.
If I try to hold down the option key during startup, the iMac WILL let me choose which OS to boot from, but if I choose anything else than the OS already installed it freezes.
I've even tried to boot my Mac Pro from the iMac install DVD - no problems.
I've even run a hardware test on the iMac - no problems.
I am running out of options fast! Please help a devoted Mac-friend.

I WAS using the DVD that came with the machine, but I fear Apple may have sent me the wrong one?
In trying to solve the issues I'd tried other OS disc's (A Mac Pro install DVD and a OS X Leopard DVD) - but none of them would even boot, nor install of my iMac. I always end up with a white screen during boot up.
As I described, the original iMac install DVD would indeed boot my Mac Pro, do the disc seems ok?

MacBook Pro Won't Boot from Leopard DVD

My brother's MacBook Pro (2009 13") won't boot from the Leopard install DVD. Here is what happened:
- I tried to do Bootcamp on it. I installed Windows 7 but realized that there were no Bootcamp drivers for that.
- Deleted Widnows 7 and put the XP install disc in. Somehow, it formatted my Mac partition instead of my Windows partition.
- Now that the MBP was only running Windows XP, I connected it to my iMac in target disk mode and wiped it (GUID, one Mac OS Extended (Journaled) partition).
- I tried to put the Leopard (10.5.0) install DVD in there so I can restore from the Time Machine backup, and it sees it when I hold option at bootup but refuses to boot from it.
- I reset the PRAM and tried again, no luck.
What is going on here? Does it have to do with the fact that it was doing Bootcamp? I either want to boot from the disc or somehow restore from Time Machine some other way. I can use another computer (my iMac) if I need to.

Haha yeah, I posted right before. The thing I'm wondering now: Does this mean that a Mac that came with Lion cannot be downgraded to Snow Leopard? Well, I'll save it for another question if I ever cross that bridge.

Mac Pro 2008 won't boot from install disc - black screen

I recently purchased a new hard drive to replace the original that came with my Mac Pro 2008. I was able to format the new drive using Disk Utility. I am now at the point where I need to install OS X onto the new drive, but the computer refuses to boot from the disc. The disc is recognized by the computer (I can access the disc and am able to use the BootCamp applications, etc.) but I just get a black screen when trying to boot directly from the disc. The computer boots fine otherwise.
I have tried the following:
I have tried using both the gray install disc that came with the computer and the Snow Leopard Install DVD disc.
I have tried booting using the "C" key and the "option" key but still receive a black screen following the chime (I've held these down for several minutes).
I have tried restarting from either install disc using the Bootcamp Assistant.
I have tried running the installation software to get it to restart from the disc.
I have tried a combination of the drives, i.e. trying to boot from the discs with just the new drive installed, just the original drive installed, and with both in bay1 and 2.
Everything results in the computer starting up, hearing the chime, and then nothing..just black screen. I have the original drive partitioned with BootCamp with OSX Snow Leopard and Windows 7 installed (I don't know that that matters).
I am at a loss as to what to try next. It doesn't seem like the superdrive because it is recognizing the disc, it just won't boot from it.

Clone should be a must and easy to do and learn (learn by doing! 2)
6800 would 'qualify' as 5x70 series flashed etc and same rule: 10.6.5
In the past there was 10.4.6, 10.5.6, but not 10.6.6 - even though strong need for such a DVD.
10.6.8 DVD would be excellent
Lion or ML - buy, download, make an installer flash card would be what I would do at this point.
Then keep both - dual boot as you learn and test and see what ML does and waht you had that required Rosetta to support PowerPC. See www.roaringapps.com about that.
With Carbon Coyp Cloner - was share, now commercial, great utility been around since 10.2.2 at least - this time 2003. 10 yrs.
You can clone the system folders, you can even selectively choose. You can skip copy of most of your home account and do that separately to another drive if you want.
Clone Windows with Paragon or WinClone and use Windows 7 or 8 DVD to do a system repair (automatic) or to edit the BCD file. It can and should - and all you do is boot Windows 7 DVD w/ only the one drive present and go at it. Piece of cake. But yes, Windows gets fussy if you change or remove or move. BCD to the rescue. A proper program for cloning like Paragon's "Clone OS" meant for going from disk drives to SSDs, knows that and how to do it.
Back to how to clone etc:

Disk utility has RESTORE which will also clone your system but not the Lion Recovery partition. Oddly Apple did not 'endorse' making bootable clone of the system which works too but most choose Carbon Copy Cloner - it works more consistently; it allows for smart update of the backup volume. Both can backup to a sparse disk image if desired.

The DVD is dependent on your hardware. And your hardware changed. The drivers for the 5780 and 6xxx are bundled in the OS and lacking. Minimum build thing.
Put the new drive anywhere you want. Does not matter. Can move it later. Can be drive bay 0-3 or a Firewire external or under the DVD drive.
When you clone pull the old drive and boot from the newly cloned.
After that keep a backup clone around all the time. Takes less than 10 minutes to do a smart update to copy just the changes to keep it current. So you have working copy of the system. I keep Clone "A" that I keep "as was" the system as of last month or whatever (like 10.7.4 before upgrade to 7.5).
Comes easier after doing it once and have all your ducks in a row.

G5 won't boot from Install Disc or Hard Drive

After 2.5 years of perfect service my G5 2.0 suddenly won't boot from the HD or Install Disc that came with it. My G5 only shows the grey screen with the apple logo, the spinning gears and the circle with the line through it.
I haven't added any hardware since day one. I've done pram,nvram and smu resets. I've selected a start up disk by holding the option key, removed and re-seated the ram one by one.
The Apple Hardware test CD shows everything passing. I ran Disc Utility from Target Mode from my MacBook Pro and it showed the G5 hard drive is in working order.
I think I have a hardware issue.
Is it worth it to get this model repaired if its something major?

I was having a similar problem, except I only saw the grey apple logo, no spinning. Finally got it figured out, ended up being one of my processors (dual 1.8) was bad, took the bad one out and it works fine now. Now Im working on getting processor replaced.
