Won't boot from Tech Tool disk

According to the Tech Tool disc that came with AppleCare for my Macbook Pro, holding 'c' is how you boot from the disk. It does not, the machine boots right into to main disk.
I need to run disc utilities to see why my drive seems to be chattering so much. The TechTool disk isn't bootable and I've lost the system disk that came with the computer. Suggestions?

You may need to download the bootable recent version from here....

  • I wiped my hard drive, but now my mac won't boot from the OS disk.

First it may help to read my previous discussion trying to amend the problem I had there. You can read it here. After that I did some more research and after backing up, I inserted my snow leopard install disk and wiped my entire hard drive using disk utility. Then, using Time Machine, I tried to restore my hard drive from a backup, and it told me that it can't restore from the backup and it gave me this error message (I'm sorry it's so long, I just didn't know which parts you may need and it gave me that entire thing. Also, this website wouldn't just let me attach the document):

Why did you wipe the drive?
    Were you having problems?
If you were those problem may be related to a failing hard drive and that is why the TM backup could be restored.
In you topic header you say the system won't boot from the SL DVD, But it di for you to wipe the drive. Then it should again boot from the SL DVD.
Insert the DVD and reboot, hold down the Option key and select the Optical drive, SL DVD, as the Boot source.

  • Yet another "won't boot from a certain disk" issue

My Sawtooth G4 just got a new second drive, which seems to work fine. At first it wouldn't boot OS 9 (there are multiple partitions on it) but after some messing with the OS 9 install disk and changing the Startup Disk in the control panel I got that sorted out. The real problem is with OS X. I'm running 10.3.9 on my primary HD and I wanted another OS X system on the new HD so I CCC'd my first disk to the new HD's first partition (which worked fine on the old drive's second partition, now erased) but the Mac won't boot from it. It showed up under the boot options menu (hold option down) but simply wouldn't boot from it no matter what. Finally, I erased the partition and installed OS 10.3 then upgraded it to 10.3.9 (still won't boot from it) but the problem continues. I get the spinning wheel followed by the circle with the bar through it.
It looks to me like there are tons of possible causes for this after reading through several similar threads here. Could somebody tell me what the most logical approach is to fixing this? Or maybe there's some stupid obvious thing I forgot?
    Thanks!

Haven't you ever had a system crash or something that messed up your startup disk or some portion of the OS? And what if your prefs or anything custom has been affected? If you only have one startup drive and it gets hosed you are really in a world of hurt, as then it's up to recovery methods to salvage things. And if you don't have unlimited time to sort all this out? It seems obvious why I would want two startup disks - I've used this system for fifteen years and it just works, thats all. Under OS 9 everything was a lot simpler - you just copied the files to another disk and if they were there, you got a boot disk; everything is a lot more complex in X and I don't really understand it even now.
Then there's the issue of why the other startup disk, while recognized as such, won't boot. That's a puzzle to me. I can't imagine how the Carbon Copy Cloned disk wouldn't work for this - that's what I did before and it worked fine.
The new drive is a SATA drive with an OWC card, but since the partitions with OS9 boots work fine I don't know what to think. (I have to have OS 9 because I still use Vision for my sequencing and audio recording, and because 9 crashes more often than X I always have at least two boot disks of my main system - just in case.)
    Thanks.

  • Booting from Tech Tool Deluxe 10.4.2

I can boot our older ibook G3 from this Cd ( which I just received with my brand new ibook)- however when I start up the G4 from the CD the screen is shades of gray- barely can barely see that it is loading correctly- however the pointer is frozen in left hand corner- can't move it, although the return key works to select the program. arrow down key also works to read report- but still pointer can't move to restart and I am forced to force quit.
    very strange
Cleaned and tried several times same results- I am wondering if perhaps this Apple Care Cd is not for 10.4.2.

I have heard that other utilities are more helpful- but as I just recieved this computer last week- from Apple and Tech Tool Deluxe was the software that shipped with my Apple Care plan- I thought it might be usable on the computer it was purchased with- silly me.
I also made a new updated disk of 3.0.3 Disk Warrior and I could not even start up from that disk- it froze and I had to force quit-
From what I have read elsewhere- Disk Warrior is compatible with 10.4.2, so there must be something else going on.

  • PowerBook G4 17" Boots into Open Firmware; Won't boot from HD or Disk

This PBG417 (1GHz/512MB/60GB) has an complex recent history directly related to this problem. It was thought to have a dead logic board, and was given to me for a very insignificant amount of money. I discovered today (at an Authorized Apple Repair center) it merely had a ribbon cable disconnected from the logic board which kept it from powering on, which, when rge cable was reconnected it did on the spot, fully booting (imagine my satisfaction). However, upon getting home, it booted into Open Firmware instead, and offedrs a choice of typing mac-boot or shut-down. Mac-boot takes it to the grey screen where the question mark/Finder guy blink and nothing happens. I put a grey PowerBook G4 17" system disk in, but not the one that shipped with it, hoping it would do. When I try to boot from disk, it goes to Open Firmware, I enter mac-boot, it goes to happy Finder with no question folder, but stays there with the optical drive occasionally making movememts and sounds. If you enter any command besides shut down or mac-boot, iot says unknown word; the command prompt itself is 0> .
I'm not sure the hard drive is seated correctly. When I got the computer, the drive was removed; I put it in an enclosure and installed Tiger on it and put it back in, but apart from connecting the ribbon cable, it just sat in its bay not fixed down. However, it booted correctly the first time it was successfully started.
Finally, the previous owner removed all 23 bottom case screws when he took out the drive and lost them; the Apple repair tech mustered up about 9 and put them in the crucial locations but it's still not screwed down everywhere, although the one time it booted correctly, it had no screws in it.
It seems the computer doesn't read the hard drive or the disk, but the hard drive mau be installed wrong and the disk, while for a 17" was not the one that shipped with this PowerBook 17". The computer is missing many case screws, bnutg booted properly only when there were none it place. I also tried resetting the PMU but am not sure I did reset it because the Apple article isn't clear about which models have which processes. I tied Target Disk Mode but it woujldn't mount/boot.
How can I get the disk out and how to make it boot to the desktop?

You can try to reset NVRAM here is KBase from apple site:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=42642
and after that reset PRAM in your unit, here is the kbase:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If needed you can also tried to reset PMU, here is the kbase:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Make sure you choose the correct step for your unit.
If after all the steps your unit still booting up to open firmware then there is possibility that you have corrupt NVRAM which could not be fixed by doing reset except replacing logic board.
    Good luck. Hope this help

  • If leopard won't boot from dvd, use disk utility mount to partition

wanted to share a way that i successfully installed os 9, tiger, and leopard on 1 hard drive. first of all, leopard was the only installation that i had difficulty with. it would not boot off the original dvd, no matter if i held down the 'c' key or the option key, so this is what i did after a lot of reading on the internet to try and troubleshoot this issue.
First thing i did was partition my internal hard drive in 3 partitions using disk utility. the 3rd partition was around 9gb. I installed os9 first on the 1st partition, i then installed tiger on that same partition. then i put in my leopard dvd, and opened up disk utility. and clicked on "restore", and dragged the dvd image as the "source", and chose the 9gb partition as the destination, and clicked on restore. then, i changed the "startup disk" to start from the 9gb where i just restored the image, and rebooted, and went through the leopard setup and chose the 2nd partition as the place to install. this should work with the dvd, or if you made an image from the dvd. I hope this helps someone else whose dvd won't boot, because it was very frustrating after you purchase a faster processor, and faster video card so that your system meets the requirements, and then the dvd won't boot.

Two ways. Use another computer to restore the install disc to one of those ext HD. Then, use it to boot the other machine. Get an ext CD/DVD reader and use it to read the install disc and boot the machine. However, if both the HD and optical reader are kaput, then a trip to an Apple repair station is in order.

  • IBook Won't Boot From ANY Optical Disk - correct forum this time sorry.

My trusty old iBook circa mid 2005 is overdue for an overhaul but refuses to boot in Target disc mode or boot from any of my install disks, 10 or 10.3 or 10.4. When I choose the disk from Startup Disk it begins to reboot until the Apple screen comes up with some pixelly artifacts onscreen and it hangs. Holding the 'C' key down does nothing. Please help I need to wipe this baby clean and start from scratch.

    Hey Craig,
Here's my pics of where the GPU sits from an earlier discussion:
"This is the position of the GPU on top. That bay right below is where the hard drive goes and that's it's connector lower right:

Here's a view with the heat sink in place and a ghost image of the GPU:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=13312iBoo kGPUheatsink.jpg
The spot where I'd recommend applying pressure from underneath:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=13312GPUu nderneath.jpg
and where that spot is on the lower shield:
    http://s291.photobucket.com/albums/ll306/spudnuty/?action=view&current=133GPUBot tomshield.jpg
So to access that you'd take the lower case off. Go to ifixit for that.
If that solves your problem or makes it better it will run like that for a while. If it gets worse you'd need to reball it. $79 plus shipping one way in the States."

  • Won't boot from alternate startup disk

I have 10.1.3 on my 366 firewire clamshell and I am trying to install tiger. I connected my external firewire dvd burner which showed the contents no problem, but when I chose it as the startup disk and rebooted, it just displayed the alternating mac/disk question mark icon then booted from the HD anyway.
So I installed Tiger on an external firewire HD and tried to boot from that, but this time it shows the mac/? icon but doesn't boot even from the HD.
I then realised I had Panther on cds so I tried to boot from that (hold C when powering up), but again it refused and just had the mac/? icon.
How can I reset it or do something to get it booting again ?

    Hi Neil -
If your 'target disc mode' install runs along fine and then quits ...that to me is a bad sign.
Have your tried resetting the PMU?
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449#faq4
I did a Jag. install via target disc mode from an iMac G5 and that went fine. My drive is partitioned with X and 9.
Does your OS 9 disc give you the same problems as you're having with X? If not, maybe boot into 9 and use its 'disk first aid' and/or 'drive set-up' utility to check your drive?

  • IMac won't boot from internal drive (Disk Ult can't see drive)

Yesterday morning my iMac (early 2006) froze while watching a movie. I figured it was because I was running so many things in the background (Safari, iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, iCal and Preview). So I restarted the unit by holding down the power button cause it wouldn't responded to any keyboard prompts, tho it did allow me to use the mouse. So I restarted and got a grey screen showing a folder and a question mark. i unplugged the system for a few minutes and started her up again. This time it showed the gray apple but it had a progress bar on the bottom like it was loading something. The system started and took me to the login screen. Just to be safe i restarted it from the login screen. the system booted up fine and i finished watching my movie. I came back from the gym like 2 hrs later and tried to wake my mac from sleep mode and got the usual prompt to enter my password to unlock the screen. As i started to enter my password the screen froze again. This time tho i was unable to restart the unit. i kept getting that grey screen with the folder and question mark. So iI popped in my 10.6 install disk to see if I could repair the HDD. But no matter how many times i try the system does not pick up my internal drive. I'm not really sure what the problem is. I thought it might be hardware failure, but I didn't have this problem until after the latest software update. And the drive never gave me any indication of problems before yesterday. All i can think is that the system update or safari update corrupted something or is not playing nice with something already on the system. But i guess that wouldn't explain the drive not being seen. Can anybody offer and ideas of a solution? I really just wanna get it up so I can salvage my iTunes folder and transfer it to my Macbook.
    HELP

    Hi MacBoy84
Sure sounds like the HD is worn out, damaged, failing or failed and needs to be replaced.
Take it to your local Authorized Apple Service Provider and have them put a new WD Caviar Blue or Seagate Barracuda 3.5 SATA HD in it. > http://www.apple.com/buy/locator/service/
Given the choice I would choose a WD Caviar Blue, they seem to run a little cooler and quieter than the WD Blacks and most Seagate's. http://www.wdc.com/en/products/index.asp?cat=3
As for your iTunes Library that depends, some times just before an HD totally fails it is possible to copy the data off of it. Unfortunately most of the time when it's gone it's gone for good and needs to be sent out to a professional data recovery service, you do have a Time Machine backup on an External HD right?

  • MBP won't boot from HD or disk drive

After using my MBP daily since I got it in Feb, this morning it refused to boot. It got as far as the gray screen with the logo and the spinning cog. The cog would spin for a while then stop. Then nothing. This has happened a time or two when I'd installed a program that the computer didn't like, and I'd always been able to use the install disk.
This time it didn't work! I tried starting while holding the "C" --didn't work. Same thing..cog stuck.
Next I tried holding down the Option key while booting. This gave me a choice of HD or Disk drive. HD booted and immediately froze before I could do anything.
Rebooted and tried chosing the disk drive...nothing.
This has gone on all day with intermittent breaks to scream and punch pillows.
Next, I found a TechTools disk in my Warranty pack. I somehow managed to eject the install disk and put in the TechTools disk according to direction on the front of the disk, with C key depressed...nothing. I took out the battery and reset the power settings. No help. I've tried every key combination that is physically possible with only 10 fingers and nothing has helped.
I'm embarassed to say that I'm typing this on my husband's Fujitsu Lifebook. I'll never hear the end of this.
    Please help!
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2gig

The genius is wrong. As long as you have the latest version of OS X on a PowerPC Mac it will work fine.
Here is a document from Apple that discusses the issue: Intel-based Macs: "You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read" alert message
You can't format a disk in an Intel-based Mac from a PowerPC Mac and have it boot successfully but you can access the disk or repair it.

  • Video Ram failed, won't boot from Leopard Install Disk

    Hello,
Recently, I ran the techtools software, and got a report that my video ram had failed. It was suggested that I attempt to reinstall OSX. I put in the Leopard install disk, click the install or setup button or whatever it is, click to restart. When it restarts, a gray screen comes up, but the computer never actually boots up, from either the DVD or my hard disk.
    Any suggestions?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Since your MacBook is still very new, you shouldn't have an problem with the DVD. If I were you, I'd call AppleCare Support and have someone walk you through re-installing Mac OS X. However, I really doubt this will help resolve what seems to be a hardware failure on your MacBook. Hopefully the folks at AppleCare Support can help figure out if you need to send your MacBook in for repairs.

  • New HDD installed in PowerBook G3, won't boot from installation disk.

I just installed a new hard drive in my G3 Wallstreet and I can't get it to boot from the original Apple CD.
I've tried holding the C key as well as +⌥+⇧+⌫, but to no avail.
The CD tests fine in my old iMac G4, so maybe the culprit is the optical drive, but then again, I'm not so sure.
Is there a way to either boot my PowerBook or install OSX from my iMac G4?
Message was edited by: rick268 Also, I can boot into Open Firmware just fine.

    Thanks for your help.
WeLoveMacs wanted $50, but I just scored an entire topcase on eBay for $15, shipped. We'll see what happens.

In the years of keeping the old soldiers almost relavent, I ran into a "won't boot from a system disk" issue on two of them. In both cases, replacing a dead PRAM battery fixed the issue. Don't ask me why but that was the only thing that fixed them.
When I was supporting those, you could still get new Wallstreet batteries from Other World Computing. Today they no longer show them. I'm not sure where to steer your for a new one. USed batteries are like used chewing gum, IMHO.
You can try disconecting the wire from the PRAM battery to the logic board. That might help. Requires some take-down:

  • Powerbook won't boot from CD

Trying to upgrade the OS on my 17" Powerbook G4 and it won't boot from the Panther disk or the Tiger disk. I can't even get it to boot from DiskWarrior CD.
I was able to boot from the original restore disks that came with the machine, but the OS is 10.2.7. I was able to run Disk Doctor, but that didn't seem to do anything.
    Anyone experiencing similar issues

I had the opposite problem. I was unable to boot from the restore disc that came with my powerbook, but my retail Tiger DVD worked. I copied the restore disc using my Mac mini, and the copy booted fine. Seems like the slot-loaders are a little picky sometimes.
You could probably convince Apple to exchange the media.

  • G5 will not boot from system disk or from Tech Tool Pro 5

Hi everyone - Having a bit of trouble and hoped I might find some answers here.
I suspect my system drive was having some issues as it sounded like it was being taxed and strained as I would open up applications from it. Upon verifying the disk using Disk Utilities, the test would stop short with the following message:
    First Aid Failed
Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered
    Filesystem verify or repair failed
In addition, an error message came up (in red) on the disk utility screen as well saying:
    Volume header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
Normally from here, I'd start up the computer from the Tech Tool Pro 5 disk (holding down C key upon restart). But when I did this, the computer never responded. Instead, the power was on but the screens went black and the computer went into a very quiet "idle" mode.
After about a minute, the fans began ramping up pretty high (and loud). This went on until I finally had to manually shut down the computer by holding the power switch down for a few seconds. I didn't know what else to do. Those fans were not coming down (not even after 10 minutes).
Anyway, I pushed the power button again and held the C key down. Still, nothing.... The fans stayed idle, for a little while and then ramped up again just like last time. I hit that same dead end and powered down the computer via the power button.
Is there an alternate way to boot the computer from Tech Tool Pro or the original start up disks? I'm having no luck, here.
I'm on my way into town to purchase a new internal drive (something with about 1TB of space) so that my pro apps can swim a little instead of being being bogged down on a 250G drive.
    Thanks for any assistance, folks!
Oh yeah.... Happy New Year to everyone!!
    Steve

The Install disk has version 10.4 on it. I have also tried booting from my OS 10.5 disk but with no avail.
However, here is an update on my plight.
Apple tech says that after hearing the symptoms, he thinks that one of the processors is shot. Being that my particular model of G5 (dual 2.7 processors) is a liquid cooled machine, it's possible that some sort of leak has formed and has either taken out a processor or has caused a processor to overheat. He says that this model of G5 has been known to do that. In this case, nothing will boot which makes me think that my original system drive may actually be okay. I'm taking it in for the tech to look at it and just be sure that's the problem. However, if it is a dead processor, the part alone would run $799 plus labor to install it. Frankly, that's just too much for me to pay to keep this old G5. I'd rather put that money towards a new or reconditioned Mac Pro 8 core or quad core machine.
I've owned several Mac computers in the past and perhaps this is the frustration talking but it seems that no matter how diligent you are in maintaining your Macintosh, these machines only seem to last about 5 years before something majorly wrong happens (mother board, processor, etc). Can I expect this same, limited time frame from a new Mac Pro? I mean, am I just being paranoid?

  • OS X Recover Disk Assistant won't boot from USB

I just replaced my hard drive in my iMac (2008). I'm trying to get the OS installed and I don't have both of my original install disks (I believe they were Leopard disks). When I purchased Lion I did create an install disk, however. I ignorantly tried to install Lion straight up from my disk onto the new hard drive. Now, it says there's a problem with the installation and to try and install again. The problem is the install disk just goes straight to that message and I can't use it to install. I tried to Erase the drive with Disk Utility and start over, but the install disk still goes straight to the "problem" message.
I read about the OS X Recover Disk Assistant tool and loaded that onto a USB memory stick, but it won't boot from it. I can use Disk Utility when I boot from my Lion install disk and the new hard drive shows up, the USB stick shows up, the install CD shows up, and then there's a grey line and under that with a globe icon that says disk3 and under that it says Max OS X Base System.
Under Restore, I tried to use this Base System as a source and my new hard drive as the destination thinking that's what this Recover Disk Assistant thing was but that didn't work.
I don't know what else to do... am I going to have to take it into a shop or can someone help me?
