Won't boot, intermittent, power button does little (Early 2008/A1260/15")
I've got a Macbook Pro Early 2008/A1260/15". It's a 2.5Ghz running 10.5.8 with 2GB of RAM. Model Identifier MacBookPro4,1, Boot ROM MBP41.00C1.B00 and SMC version 1.27f2.
Sometimes it will not boot. When it does not boot, the only thing that occurs when the power button is pressed is that the hard drive spins up. Nothing else happens. The display does not turn on, the system makes no sounds, the light on the latch does not illuminate, and the fans do not activate (I have tried booting with the case open to watch the fans and they do not spin).
If the AC adapter is plugged in during such an attempt, the hard drive seems to stay on indefinitely, until the power button is held down for 5 seconds. If the laptop has only battery power during such an attempt, the hard drive will power down after a couple of seconds.
There are 3 sorts of things that seem to allow it to boot in such a scenario:
1) Time. If I wait for an hour or sometimes many hours, it boots fine.
2) SMC reset. Sometimes disconnecting AC and battery and holding the power button for 5 seconds, then reconnecting power allows a successful boot
3) Random repeated attempts (generally with AC power) of holding down power to shut down the drive after an unsuccessful boot and then trying again. This sometimes works.
At other times, it boots fine and will boot fine repeatedly.
I tried running Apple Hardware Test. The short test was successful. The extended test was also successful, although during the test the mouse froze, and after the test succeeded, the mouse remained frozen.
I have tried re-seating the RAM, swapping the RAM sticks, trying each of the 2 RAM sticks individually in each of the 2 slots, but none of this helps.
I have removed the hard drive and attached it to another computer where I ran a SMART short and extended self test, both of which were successful. There is no evidence that there is anything wrong with the drive.
Any ideas? Is it the logic board? Is it the so-called "left I/O board"?

I did. It's just that I am in a developing country with only 8 authorized service providers in the entire country, and 0 apple stores. They were not able to reproduce, diagnose, or fix the issue.
So I'm hoping that my own tests and the experience of others can help me narrow it down a bit more so that I can bring it back again and have a higher chance of success.

Hi all - I was using my iBook earlier this morning and it just turned itself off without any warning. It was running off the battery, but had plenty of charge, and there was no 'low power' warning, so it wasn't that.
I can't get it to turn on now. Pressing the power button does nothing - no whirring, beeping, chiming or anything else. I tried resetting the PMU to no effect. No lights appear on the caps lock button. I haven't tried using the Mac OSX cd, but I'm a little afraid I won't get it back out of the slot-load drive with the way the computer is behaving.
I have it plugged in now and it seems to be charging the battery, so I don't think it's related to either power or battery issues. In fact, it seems the power and battery are the only things working! Absolutely nothing else happens. Unresponsive.
My warranty ran out in September (November now, unfortunately) so if it needs servicing I suppose it will be out of my own pocket.
Can anyone help?

iBook G4 Dual usb 14" Mac OS X (10.4.8)Ok - good news. I've got the problem fixed.
After a call to Apple Support (called the Canadian one), and a $59 charge (worth it, in my opinion, since my warranty is expired) the gentleman on the line asked me to do a PMU reset with the SHIFT + CTRL + Option + Power combination. That's what I had tried before and it didn't work. Didn't work this time either.
Next, he had me remove the battery, unplug the computer from the adapter, and hold the power button down for 5 seconds. I put the battery back in, plugged it back in, and turned it on.
Voila. Works like a charm. Apparently, there are two ways to do a PMU reset.

HP6310 won't respond to power button, camera light flashes
After turning my HP6310 off by unlugging the power cord, I can't get it to turn back on properly. I plugged the power cord back in and the display lights up blank and the camera light in the front lower left flashes. The power button does not light up and when pressed, does nothing.

Froze on black screen and power button does not work

any suggestions would be appreciated- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
Neglect the reset and when it says place the iPod in recovery mode use one of thes programs
- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Lenovo V570 Laptop Power Button does not work. Did I screw it up?
Hi, my Lenovo V570 keyboard recently stopped working so I took the keyboard off to reposition the cable. In the process I disconnected another cable on the motherboard (shown in the pictures below). I also cant find the black plastic piece that was holding it down.
Now not only does the keyboard not work but the power button does nothing. After research though Ifound out this laptop is notorius for having the power button go bad.
When I plug in the AC adapter I do see the battery light go on and it charges so I dont think the motherboard is bad. I
have tried every trick in the book as far as getting static out of the laptop power button (holding down power button for
certain times). I looked at the mainteneance manual for this laptop and could not figure out what the disconnected cable does. I have tried reconnecting the cable without the plastic piece but that did not work.
Is the disconnected cable responsible for this or should I order a new power button board with cable?

As per the snap shot which you have shared it looks like the black support connector is broken, you can fix this cable by using a gum, but I would suggest you to visit nearest service center to fix this issue.

The power button does not work
i recently noticed that my original iphone power button does not work i push but nothing happens. I know that i have to fix but the problems is that the warranty is been over for long i need to know a good place to repair because the apple people said they could not fix it. VictorCT, the behavior of the power button on Mavericks (10.9.2) is not as the note (OS X Mavericks: Using the power button - Support - Apple) describe. I have to press four or five times de power button in order to put the mac to sleep.

Help! While doing workaday tasks on my 15" MacBook Pro with 10.6, I got the dreaded slowly unfolding darkened screen with the message "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button until it turns off." Kernel panic, I guess.
In the past, in the few times this has ever happened to me, I held down the Power button as instructed, and the Mac turned off.
HOWEVER, this time around, holding down the Power button does absolutely nothing! It doesn't make the computer turn off, no matter how long I hold it down, nor if I try holding it down in combination with other keys.
Needless to say, the OS is completely frozen otherwise, and no keyboard or trackpad actions have any effect.
And since this is the new kind of MacBook Pro -- there's no way to remove the battery!
So, is the only solution, to unplug it from the power supply and simply wait for 8 hours (or whatever) until the battery runs out of juice? Say it ain't so!
(I'm writing this on someone else's computer, needless to say.)
I NEED access to my computer's files TODAY for important work-related matters. Am I out of luck, or is there some secret way to get this darn thing turned off and restarted?If you insist! :

I have a Mac Mini running very latest version of OSX. I was making a recording with QuickTime; when I needed to plug in a USB recording device into the back of the Mac Mini, as I pulled the Mac off my shelf to do this, the power cable came out and the Mac lost power.
I plugged it back in and powered up the Mac. I get the grey screen with Apple logo and the spinning grey wheel; then it goes to a blue screen (as usual) and I get the "starting OSX..." progress bar. When the progress bar finishes, I'm left with a blue screen only, no dock, no apple icon at top left, nothing across the top, no nothing.
So far, I've booted from the original disc and repaired the permissions as well as the disc, then re-booted, but same old blue screen.
I have another iMac G5 machine, so is there any way I can at least retrieve the important HD files from the Mac Mini to my G5, before throwing the broken Mac Mini away?

Not to differ with my colleagues here, but there's an important question that wasn't asked.
1. You wrote: "So far, I've booted from the original disc and repaired the permissions as well as the disc, then re-booted, but same old blue screen."Did Disk Utility report any errors it could not fix when you ran Repair Disk? I suggest you run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified.
2. You may also want to run the Apple Hardware Test that came with your Mini to be sure nothing shorted when the power cable was removed from the computer. I've seen it happen, hence I usually recommend removing the power cable at the wall before disconnecting the power cable from the computer. See my "Apple Hardware Test" FAQ.
3. Repair Disk gives your Mini a clean bill of health, the blue screen may be the result of some Startup or Login item that was corrupted due to the sudden power outage. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem and may help you avoid and Archive and Install.
4. If you elect to go the Archive and Install route, see my "General advice on performing an Archive and Install" FAQ for some important tips on this process.
5. As FYI, this is the kind of problem that makes one glad they've implemented a comprehensive backup and recovery solution. For advice on the backup and recovery solution I employ, see my "Backup and Recovery" FAQ. Computing without a comprehensive backup and recovery solution is like driving without auto insurance.

Power button does not react iMac Core Dua 20"
Hello,
I just purchased an iMac 20" intel Core Duo. I leave the machine to go to sleep during the night. Almost everyday when I want to start the next day my iMac does not wake-up pressing "enter", moreover the power button does not even respond. I have to unplug the power cable and after a few seconds the powerbutton can activate the Mac again. Can anybody help or should I immediately return for repairs?

PowerBtn will allow you to set a HardButton to turn the TX on and off in the same fashion as the PowerButton, if you want.
This setting will remain active while 'Enable' on the PowerBtn screen is active.
The user can select 'Disable' on the PowerBtn screen.
The setting will survive a Soft Reset. (Hi PG )
If the Palm PowerButton fails completely then you will not be able to do a Hard Reset.
The PowerBtn app has a 'Hard Reset button' which you tap and after a time countdown (you can cancel in this time) it will perform a Hard Reset. This is the same as the Hard Reset app mentioned above.
The 'Enable' and 'Disable' mentioned above do not affect the 'Hard Reset button'
NOTE: PowerBtn also has a 'Program itself becomes power button' feature but I do NOT recommend you use this.
If you enable this you will not be able to change the setting or use the 'Hard Reset button' because when you Tap on the PowerBtn Icon the TX will turn Off. The only way to change the setting or use the 'Hard Reset button' would be to Delete PowerBtn then install again.
You can also turn your TX On by pushing the 5WayNav Select (middle button) to bring up the clock then double push it. The TX will stay on at the same place it was in when you turned it off, in the same way it would if you used the Power Button

G4 MDD won't start. Power button doesn't light up.
I just moved, shipped my computer (a G4 mirrored door drive) and when I unpacked it and plugged it in, it wouldn't even act like there was power to it. No light up on the power button, no chime, no nothing. I used my Blackberry to troubleshoot and ended up resetting the PMU.
Today, about a week later, I was having trouble with my internet so I shut everything down and flipped the switch on my powerstrip to reset it. (GRR. I probably should have just unplugged the modem and plugged it bag in.) Now, my computer is doing the same thing. Now lights, no chimes, nada.
Should I reset the PMU again? Is that bad to do? Why would it possibly be doing this again?
Help!Unplugging your Mac from it's power source causes the battery to discharge as it trys to maintain PRAM settings and the Macs clock. If you have done this before, or often cut power off to your Mac via a power strip or wall switch, your battery may be depleted. Since it's not a rechargable battery it'll need to be replaced. You can also check it with a voltmeter.
Even if you have'nt done it before, this disconnect may have been enough to kill it, if it was weak to begin with.
I would check it first. When mine went, I had no response from my Mac at all; just a light on my power button; absolutely no boot at all.
Check out things in Texas Mac Man's tutorial on the subject. His tutorial is a little dated (don't believe it even mentions G5's) but the info in it, except SMU not being included, still applies.
