Won't Boot internal Start Up Disk
Hi all,
Today I had to do a hard shut down after my 2009 mac book pro froze. After this, the computer would not boot up again. I get as far as the grey screen, with the rotating "gear icon". It stays on this screen indefinitely.
I tried booting to the recover disk - it did not boot into it
I have tried doing a safe start up - nothing happened
I tried resetting the PRAM - it restarted twice, but after that nothing else changed
I tried doing the fsck -fy command, and nothing really came of that. However, it did say that the OS was "not yet set".
I changed my HDD a few months ago, and have a clone of my hard drive from then. When I plug that hard drive in and try to boot into it, it works, as the computer was a few months ago. I opened the disk utility and repaired my main hard drive, I am currently verifying the partition labled "Macintosh HD" on it. It has so far said (in red) Journal needs to be replayed but volume is read only.
Ive exhausted my knowledge so that leaves me here.
I dont think its my logic board, because I can still boot into my old HDD... but im not sure.
This leaves me thinking it could be my new hard drive that has somehow failed to connect to the Start Up Disk.
Any insight would be much appreciated,

It looks like the hard drive is damaged. Try to repair it and see if you can use it. However, it looks like it is physically damaged and you will need to replace it.
Your MacBook Pro needs a 2'5" SATA hard drive, and you can buy near any hard drive that meet that requirement. Have a look at OWC for information > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

Macbook won't boot or start, constant disk drive noise
I purchased a Macbook Pro and been using it constantly for over 2 years now but never seen a problem like this.
I partitioned my HD to run Windows a while back but recently decided to remove it. I partitioned the HD back into its original state. While verifying the drive in Disk Utility, the drive said it had an error, don't remember what, but was able to repair it using the installation cd.
Soon after i thought everything was normal but my computer started to slow down and freeze, I had to manually turn off my Mac by holding now the power button. This went on for a bit and soon afterwards the computer wont start at all. I also heard a beeping noise when i turned on my mac but that was only once.
I dont hear a boot chime and the screen doesnt turn on. All i hear is the disk drive making its noise that it usually makes when you turn on the Mac but in this case it just keep making the noise.
Has anyone encountered a problem like this before? Any help would be great. My data has been backed up but i would rather that i didnt has to reset my Mac. I'm guess is that the HD might be failing, if thats the case then i got no choice.Have you tried starting from the installation dvd? If it won't start from this it's likely to be a hardware problem.
You could also try starting in target disk mode by holding the t key until you see the screen with the target on. Even if you don't see the screen light up still try the following. If you have access to a second Mac and a firewire cable try connecting the 2 with the cable after the attempted target mode startup and see whether the hd shows on the second machine. If it does then you probably have a failure of the graphics processor. I was able to do this earlier this year when my screen didn't light up.
My next Q: Do you have the Applecare extended warranty? If you do then take it to your nearest authorised service centre for diagnosis.

Took a look around to see if there was any information on that error, and found a few things for you. Most of the steps are for Vista and Windows 7 - if you have a different OS loaded on that Mini, please post back anytime to let me know.

Can not start up on my Macbook pro. All I get is a grey spinning wheel. Tried all the Startup key combinations and nothing works. I reset the NVRAM and nothing. I booted with start up disk , ran disk repair and all is ok. Tried to re-install OS but when I get to designating drive its blank. When I go to startup disk there is a "?" mark. When I restart under startup disk search for a drive it still comes up with nothing. Before I got the grey spinning wheel I had a locked screen. Could not move curser or click on anything. Finally just shut down. Thank you in advance for any help!
Shouldn't still have a 'beachballing'... if the drive is being found and the system is trying to boot from it but is having problems, I would suggest looking over ds store's user tip - Step by step to fix your Mac.
It's likely either something corrupt in your system files or a failing hard drive. But follow ds's steps until you find the cause of the problem.

If leopard won't boot from dvd, use disk utility mount to partition
wanted to share a way that i successfully installed os 9, tiger, and leopard on 1 hard drive. first of all, leopard was the only installation that i had difficulty with. it would not boot off the original dvd, no matter if i held down the 'c' key or the option key, so this is what i did after a lot of reading on the internet to try and troubleshoot this issue.
First thing i did was partition my internal hard drive in 3 partitions using disk utility. the 3rd partition was around 9gb. I installed os9 first on the 1st partition, i then installed tiger on that same partition. then i put in my leopard dvd, and opened up disk utility. and clicked on "restore", and dragged the dvd image as the "source", and chose the 9gb partition as the destination, and clicked on restore. then, i changed the "startup disk" to start from the 9gb where i just restored the image, and rebooted, and went through the leopard setup and chose the 2nd partition as the place to install. this should work with the dvd, or if you made an image from the dvd. I hope this helps someone else whose dvd won't boot, because it was very frustrating after you purchase a faster processor, and faster video card so that your system meets the requirements, and then the dvd won't boot.Two ways. Use another computer to restore the install disc to one of those ext HD. Then, use it to boot the other machine. Get an ext CD/DVD reader and use it to read the install disc and boot the machine. However, if both the HD and optical reader are kaput, then a trip to an Apple repair station is in order.

I wiped my hard drive, but now my mac won't boot from the OS disk.
First it may help to read my previous discussion trying to amend the problem I had there. You can read it here. After that I did some more research and after backing up, I inserted my snow leopard install disk and wiped my entire hard drive using disk utility. Then, using Time Machine, I tried to restore my hard drive from a backup, and it told me that it can't restore from the backup and it gave me this error message (I'm sorry it's so long, I just didn't know which parts you may need and it gave me that entire thing. Were you having problems?
If you were those problem may be related to a failing hard drive and that is why the TM backup could be restored.
In you topic header you say the system won't boot from the SL DVD, But it di for you to wipe the drive. Then it should again boot from the SL DVD.
Insert the DVD and reboot, hold down the Option key and select the Optical drive, SL DVD, as the Boot source. -
Powerbook won't boot past apple screen, disk utility can't repair
Last night I applied the most recent software updates, I don't remember exactly what they were but there was a Java update, a security update, a quicktime update and an itunes update. after the required restart, my powerbook g4 won't boot past the apple icon screen.
I can't boot it into safe mode or single user mode.
I can start it up in target disk mode and transfer a handful of files/directories at a time before it hangs.
When I try to run the repair in Disk Utility against the target disk, it gets about halfway before the following:
Verify and Repair disk “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid sibling link
Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
the disk doesn't make any grinding or anything, just a few clicks when it tries to boot but nothing bad sounding.

Locating the data it needs to rebuild your directory can take a while — that's the step at which DW far outperforms other utilities. It digs deeper and tries harder than anything else, and that can take a long time. The longest successful DW "fix" I've seen reported here in the seven and a half years I've been participating in Apple Discussions was *14 days* of continuous work to find the necessary data and reconstruct a hard drive directory from it. That was after all other disk utilities had been tried and had failed; it was the user's last hope to save data that hadn't been backed up anywhere. If you haven't allowed DW at least a few hours to accomplish its task, give it another chance. And don't try to use the computer for anything at all while DW is working.

New HD won't boot internally; fine externally
I'm trying to swap out the hard drive on my wife's late-2008 Macbook with a new Western Digital hard drive (regular style, not a solid-state drive). Cloning the drive with Carbon Copy Cloner seems to have worked fine (including the hidden Recovery partition) as it can be booted from in an external USB case on startup. The problem starts when I switched out the old drive and placed the WD inside. All of a sudden the Macbook won't boot up and I get the flashing folder icon instead. Switching the drives back and everything's fine; I can again boot up from either drive by holding the option key on startup.
I've read that some older Macbook Pros have an issue with SATA II data transfer rates and need to be slowed down from 3.0 Gbps to SATA speeds of 1.5. Unfortunately, it according to WD's site you can't do that with WD's 2.5" drives, only their 3.5"s. I've tried it anyways with a jumper and it doesn't seem to work for me.
I've also read elsewhere that there is a limit to the size of the drive that can be placed in: 500 GB. The drive I bought is 750 GB, so if this is true, that could be what the problem is. However, I can't find any mention of this supposed limitation anywhere on Apple's site. Does anyone have a reputable source for if this is true for this model of Macbook?

When the WD is in the MBP (15" 2010 Unibody), and I boot from an external HD, firstly the MPD says it can't recognise the WD and offers me the choice to Initialise, ignore or eject. I select initialise and disk utility reports that there is only a FAT partition of 58.2 GB on the WD. Err?
When I put the original HD (an ST950032 500GB) back in the MBP and boot off it, all is fine. I then put the WD in an external exclosure, and the MBP sees it fine and Disk Utility correctly reports a MacOS Journalled GUID partition of 465.8GB.
All the data is there (from doing an earlier clone). I just can't boot off it - weird.
Surely there is a fix for this? Have tried all the SMC / PRAM reset stuff.
The box even says that the WD Blue is 'Suitable for all operating systems (except XP) out of the box". How can you be sure that a drive you but will work in a MBP before you spend your money?

Yet another "won't boot from a certain disk" issue
My Sawtooth G4 just got a new second drive, which seems to work fine. At first it wouldn't boot OS 9 (there are multiple partitions on it) but after some messing with the OS 9 install disk and changing the Startup Disk in the control panel I got that sorted out. The real problem is with OS X. I'm running 10.3.9 on my primary HD and I wanted another OS X system on the new HD so I CCC'd my first disk to the new HD's first partition (which worked fine on the old drive's second partition, now erased) but the Mac won't boot from it. It showed up under the boot options menu (hold option down) but simply wouldn't boot from it no matter what. Finally, I erased the partition and installed OS 10.3 then upgraded it to 10.3.9 (still won't boot from it) but the problem continues. I get the spinning wheel followed by the circle with the bar through it.
It looks to me like there are tons of possible causes for this after reading through several similar threads here. Could somebody tell me what the most logical approach is to fixing this? Or maybe there's some stupid obvious thing I forgot?
Thanks!Haven't you ever had a system crash or something that messed up your startup disk or some portion of the OS? And what if your prefs or anything custom has been affected? If you only have one startup drive and it gets hosed you are really in a world of hurt, as then it's up to recovery methods to salvage things. And if you don't have unlimited time to sort all this out? It seems obvious why I would want two startup disks - I've used this system for fifteen years and it just works, thats all. Under OS 9 everything was a lot simpler - you just copied the files to another disk and if they were there, you got a boot disk; everything is a lot more complex in X and I don't really understand it even now.
Then there's the issue of why the other startup disk, while recognized as such, won't boot. That's a puzzle to me. I can't imagine how the Carbon Copy Cloned disk wouldn't work for this - that's what I did before and it worked fine.
The new drive is a SATA drive with an OWC card, but since the partitions with OS9 boots work fine I don't know what to think. (I have to have OS 9 because I still use Vision for my sequencing and audio recording, and because 9 crashes more often than X I always have at least two boot disks of my main system - just in case.)

hey guys i really need a big help here , my n900 was working fine but yesterday the network was down so i removed the battery and put it again and it worked fine and i put the phone in the charger and i slept , when i get wake up in the morning i realized that phone didn't charge it was weird for me so i removed the battery and put it again and it won't work any more...i tried to boot it and it worked fine and i choosed from boot the backup but it keep telling me error in backe up...i shut it down and since that N900 dont want to make boot or start again...when i try to open it comes the white screen with blue Nokia and it shut down....when i connect it to the computer the phone do weird thing...it keep power on with the white screen and the blue nokia, then turn off again and start again and turn off again, the N900 keep doing this untill i removed it from the computer.
I asked one of my friend have N900 and he told me that may be this happened because the battery.so i removed the battery and put it into a desktop charger for 1 hour and put it in the phone but nothing happened... still the same situation.
I don't know what to do if , there is any solution please guys tell me

W520 won't boot with eSATA RAID disks attached to Mini Dock 3 Plus
Hoping there is a simple fix to this. My month-old W520 (i7 2720QM, 16GB, Intel 80GB mSATA, 500 GB Seagate installed) sits in a Mini Dock 3 Plus. There have been absolutely no problems booting in or out of the dock.
I recently installed a 2 TB RAID 1 box in the Mini Dock 3 Plus's eSATA port (Raidon 2-disk enclosure, 2x 2 TB Hitachi 5K3000.) It performs well (great speed, very reliable so far.) Everything was fine until I shut down and rebooted--then it hung at the Think screen. Removing the eSATA connection and rebooting led to a normal boot.
I can always take the W520 out of the dock to reboot, but this is a bit of a pain. Does anybody know a way to fix this?

Unfortunately, there is no solution at this moment. I'd like to know whether it was properly reported as an issue or at least if there is some progress in resolving it, but it seems the only thing we can do is hope it will be resolved in the next BIOS/UEFI release. By the way, do you use BIOS or UEFI? When I was using BIOS, the issue was exactly the same as you describe. Then I moved to UEFI and now it doesn't freeze on Think screen, but tries to load the OS and during that process it fails and reboots.

Windows HP laptop won't boot Windows - possible hard disk failure!

A month ago my HP Pavilion dv6-6b57sa completely froze mid-use, and was unable to move the mouse or get any sort of response.
Naturally I held the power button to hard shutdown and restarted. Ever since then I have been unable to boot Windows 7 (the original OS) properly, and all I could get to was a Startup repair which took days to try to fix the issues, eventually coming up with a message saying it was unable to fix the errors.
Today I decided to ditch the data I had stored and do a fresh install - using the HP wizard by pressing F11 on boot and using a newly created USB Windows 7 install drive. After getting to the point of install process of Windows just loading the files, after choosing a hard drive partition successfully etc. the installation quit, citing a number of issues (screenshots link are below).
So I then try to restart the computer, and get a 'SMART Hard disk error' (screenshot link below) and when I select continue startup from there, it says Windows failed to start (screenshot link below) and then leads to me to the Startup repair manager again - which fails again - (screenshot link also below!)
So after doing a hard drive test, it says it has failed (screenshot link also below).
So what can I do? Is there a serious hardware related issue linked with the hard drive (which is bound to cost lots of £££ I bet), or are there further steps I can take?

MaxYes and you had to at the moment since you won't have a key unless you buy one from Microsoft for about 99 dollars.

IMac Won't Boot - Grey Loading Bar - Disk Repair Fail
My 3 month old 27" iMac (late 2013) running Mavericks will not boot up. It was smooth sailing till I'm listening to music and my iMac starts slowing down and freezing. It was so bad I had to hard restart. After I booted up the problem continued. I ran Disk Utility and it told me to boot to Recovery and repair my disk. In Recovery I'm told that my drive can't be repaired and that I need to reset/restore it completely and I should back up all my important data. I restart to move some data over to an external HDD but instead all I get when I restart is the grey apple logo and a grey loading bar. When the bar is filled my computer shuts off. I'm not terribly concerned about my data because I run Time Machine and use a few cloud services but I do want to get this problem solved so I can get back to work. Please tell me there is a better solution than taking my iMac to the Apple Store 3 hours away.
Also let me just say that I have tried resetting SMC and have already looked through the Apple Support page for the grey loading bar. I'm just looking for some advice or some untried tricks.

You have 2 options since you are still under warranty.
#1 - CALL AC to see if they will send a repair tech to your home since you have an iMac.
#2 - Check to see if there are any AASPs closer. AS are not the only places that repairs Macs.
