Won't boot - no display, solid white light.  Fans spin up and gets loud.

Hi Everyone,
I have a Core Duo 20" that won't boot. The display won't light up, and the white light stays on the whole time. No chime. Fans start slow, but then gradually gets very loud after over the course of a few seconds.
I've began taking it apart. One suspect area is the DC/DC Inverter board. The POWER_GOOD line is only showing 0.16V. Most power supplies uses signaling between 3V and 5V so I'm suspecious of this 0.16V POWER_GOOD signal.
Can someone help chime in (no pun intended), or verify the POWER_GOOD signal voltage of an early 2006 iMac Core Duo (2105)?
THANK YOU!
Yue

By the way, I've done AppleOption+PR (from my LCII days!), and have removed the logic board battery, waited, reinserted and retired without success. Thanks!

    Hello,
As the title states my power mac g5 doesn't start..I suspect it's for the scrap, but hold out hope.
    It's around 2005 model. 2.0ghz
Ok so I turn on, fans go into overdrive, red light comes on and does not blink at all, stays solid.
No display, it also does not chime.. Just sits in fan overdrive and solid red light..
I hold the power button to turn off and it does.. No led flashes.. Red light is the one behind the power button, no other lights on..
Help would be greatly appreciated... Have looked at so many links, but they don't have the exact same problem
    Thanks in advance.... Innit!

My 2007 MacBook pro won't boot up beyond a White screen any ideas what to do?

Odd how this hasn't been archived yet.
I'm getting the same thing with my Macbook, but can't boot past the white screen. An Apple store in KS suggested I needed a new hard drive, but I've already put two in there and it's still doing the same thing. I really don't want to buy another motherboard like I had to a couple of years ago.
My choices are either buy a cheap drive to boot from and remove the current one to put into an external case, or save the money by not buying a new motherboard and putting it as a down payment toward a Mac mini.

I recently updated my apple tv software anvd now it just constantly blinks a white light in the front and will show no video to my tv what do I do

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)

  • G4 won't boot from any Linux disc I put in it and c key no longer boots cd

I have a G4 Powermac (sawtooth, DVD drive, 512 MB RAM, 30 GB HDD) which has started refusing to boot from any Ububtu discs I have all of a sudden.
I'll be more specific. I've previously been able to boot from Ubuntu 6 cds (originals from shipit, not burnt) as well as Ubuntu 7 (burnt disc). I haven't made any changes to the system that should stop it booting from them. Currently installed on the hard disc is System 9 and Puma. It is still booting ok from my System 9, Puma, Panther and Tiger discs; but when trying to boot from my ubuntu discs (I've tried all of them to eliminate the possibility of a stuffed disc) the screen goes black for a second as if it is starting to boot, but then it kicks me to the flashing folder screen you get when it can't find a startup disc. Oddly enough the background colour of this screen isn't grey like usual. It's orange. I've never seen that before. If I leave it sitting at this screen after about 30 seconds or so it starts up from the hard disc on its own.
Another odd thing: the c key no longer forces the machine to boot from the cd when held on power up. This is extremely odd, as holding down option brings up the startup disc selector, and cmdopt+shiftdel also works. I've tried everything I can think of. Used a different keyboard, reset the NVRAM (by cmdopt+pr and my manually going into open firmware and doing a "reset-nvram" and "reset-all"). I've tried the PMU reset switch on the logic board. I've tried using different drives. In all cases it still refuses to boot from cd when holding c.
I don't think that the mac refusing to boot while holding the c key is coincidental. I believe that whatever the issue is that's causing this issue is what is also causing the mac from not booting any Ubuntu discs. It's a very strange problem and upon searching around, it seems this doesn't seem to have happened to anyone else before. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi, yoshi -
I just have to be rush to get the cd in the drive and then to hit cmdshift+optdelete before it's too late...
You should also be able to use Startup Manager to choose the CD as the boot volume -
Article #HT1310 - Startup Manager: How to Select a Startup Volume
A feature not discussed in that article -
Once Startup Manager has loaded, if the CD is not in the drive you can press Command-. (Command-periodkey) to open the drive - this should work even if another disk is already in the drive. Insert the disk you want to use, close the tray, wait a few seconds for the disk to spin up and get recognized, then click the circular arrow icon on the left - this forces a rescan of the available drives, which should result in an icon of the new disk appearing in the array. Click it to select it and then click the straight arrow icon on the right (or press Return).

  • 2010 iMac 21.5 won't boot up , froze at white screen! HELP!

Hi, everyone I need help! This morning the batteries ran out in my wireless magic mouse so I put in new batteries... Then all of a sudden by computer began to freeze and the colorful pin wheel began to spin and it was unresponsive! As my mouse couldn't get connected to my Mac ...
Every time I start my Mac It won't load past the white screen :(
And so I turned off my iMac and restarted it, it turned on and I heard the chime, it looked ok although it froze at the apple logo for 4 mins and a loading bar came under it and then as it finished loading the apple logo disappeared and the whole screen just went bright white and it just freezes, I can't use it !
Although when I boot up my iMac in safe mode it starts after about 10 minutes ...  And everything appears ok  just laggy but I guess that's what safe modes like, well anyway I went into disk utility and I verified the disk and permissions and repaired the disk and all that... And still nothing works, i also tried resetting the PRAM and still nothing has fixed it
My Mac is backed up with time machine, although when I bought my iMac it only came with snow leopard and now it's running lion... Although my friend installed it onto my computer a week or two after lion came out . And it's been perfect until now...
Please help! I don't know what to do next!

Ok now when I turn on my Mac, I don't even hear the chime, just displays a white screen. That's it, please someone help me I'm desperate here, In less than 5 days my warranty is over! :(

  • X2100 won't boot (no display)

I bought a new X2100. Out of the box it ran fine. I just powered it on at my data center and it appears to not post. The fans never calm down, there's no video, and no console output.
The motherboard shows C1 which is normal, I reset the CMOS and it showed C3 which is the bios coming from the compressed nvram image.
The system does nothing with C1 displayed on the motherboard led. I'm at a loss. The machine won't boot.
The primary nic never lights up etc...
The system shows a Green 'OK'. I have tried disconnecting the peripherals with no success.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello Aaron,
the system is under warranty. Why not open a service case with Sun or your reseller ?
These forums are user-to-user and (at the moment) there is not much experience/expertise with these system. I sure in a few month this will have changed.

  • How do I back up my MacBook Pro from an external hard drive if my macbook won't boot up from the white start up screen? HELP!

I went to the Genius Bar a week ago, and the guy helping me there was nice enough to help me save some money by telling me I could replace the bad hard drive my MacBook Pro had by myself. I bought everything I needed (hard drive, screws, external hard drive) and my computer won't boot past the white start up screen. It doesn't even show the Apple sign at the start up screen. How do I back up my computer so I can save all my music, school files, etc.? Could really use someone's advice on what to do! Thanks!

Ok, to be sure I understand what's going on. You were able to boot the Macbook from the existing "damaged" internal drive, and it has been backed up to the internal.
If that is correct, your internal drive is working. Just to be sure, try booting with the R key down. Then run Disk Utility to repair the internal drive. That drive may in fact be useable.
You should be aware that you cannot boot the MBP from a Time Machine back up.
Please post back so I am sure I am understanding the situation.

    Hello teacherella12,
I would be concerned too if my iPod nano was only showing a white screen.  Following the Five Rs for iPod nano (4th generation) might help with this. You can find the steps at the following link (you can skip any steps you have already taken):

  • Laptop Won't Boot. Caps Lock Button Light Blinking

I just bought a HP Pavilion DM4-2015dx laptop a few days ago.  Turning it on this morning, it won't boot and the Caps Lock light  is blinking.  I have searched the HP site and Google for a solution to the problem and have found nothing to tell me what the blinking light means or why it won't boot up.  Does anyone have an idea of what the blinking light on the Caps Button means?

My laptop HP pavilion Dv6 - 7132TX had a problem of blank screen and caps lock key blinking. I bought the laptop on 28th Apr 2012 and just before completing a year, I was facing a problem of computer inadvertently not booting. It used to show black screen with wifi LED red, power button LED glowing, and caps lock key LED blinking. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&docname=c01443366 On going to the above link, I tried to notice the number of blinks of caps lock key  LED.Found that the blink count was an endless loop of 2 LED blinks. On checking in the above link, found that 2 blinks meant the problem was BIOS corruption failure. LEDs blink 2 times BIOSBIOS corruption failure(as found in the table in the above link) So I went on and found another link to find the BIOS upgrade on the same page , where it read, Step 3: Find and download BIOS updates Then followed to the link: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?swlinkmsg=100&cc=us&dlc=en&docname=c00042629&lc=en&product=4057208 to download the driver. Downloaded the BIOS latest driver and installed it. It gave the same problem while restarting the laptop which was required to complete the bios installation. Link for the BIOS installation: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp54501-55000/sp54629.exe However after several force shutdowns and reboots (since in my laptop the blank screen during bootup was inadvertent and random..) the installation could proceed and complete. After that voila.. Problem gone Hopefully it stays that way. Now next task on my mind is to fix the sleeping problem of my PC and the noise problem of the speakers. 1.Laptop does not sleep and goes into freeze mode with LEDS glowing and screen black.2.While the laptop speakers are on, they constantly make some background noise as if the speakers have a loose connection. However I got a clue that the problem is not with the connections but with the frequencies mismatch. Inherent problem of laptop architecture I suppose. However still wish to hear sounds clearly on my laptop. Had a good experience with HP with my earlier laptop from HP. However now things are changing I guess. Feel good that I could at least troubleshoot and save money. [Even gas is Rs. 84 per litre.] and more importantly time since I was working when I saw this problem and did not want to keep laptop powered on All the time just to avoid restart .

  • Mac Mini won't boot after wind storm flickered lights

My Mac Mini running OS X 10.5 will start up but won't go beyond the Apple logo.
I can't even get it to start in Safe Mode. Is there any way around this problem besides
    buying a new computer?

Usually, if there is a power disruption (or a static shock to the computer) and it does
    not work correctly, you may be able to perform a power management unit re-set;
if the computer is a G4 PPC Mac Mini, that would be a PMU reset. If the computer
happens to be a later Intel-based Mac Mini, the procedure would be an SMC reset
and different rules would apply. I have added links to both methods in this post.
There is a chance some hardware damages may have occurred to the computer due
to being unprotected and not isolated from grid power fluctuations; such as provided
by use of an 'uninterruptible power supply' or 'backup power supply' which would be
able to switch to battery backup automatically when the main power goes haywire.
Which model Mini do you have? Since I have a G4 PowerPC Mini, I know something
about resetting Power Management Unit procedures since I've notice the Mini is more
likely to need a reset due to static shock when normally touching the computer; with
winter weather and less indoor humidity. (Otherwise, I have UPS power protection.)
Links to both kinds of power/system management reset procedure are below.
    • PPC-based G4 Mac Mini: How to reset the PMU
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2183
    • *Intel-based Macs:* Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 (mini reset instructions, as follows)
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
    3. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    4. Release the power button.
    5. Attach the computers power cable.
    6. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
{You may wish to read through the entire Intel-based Mac article if your Mini
    is of this architecture, since there may be applicable hints for all Intel-Macs.}
Not sure about your other continuing issues; I'd have to re-read the posts,
since I have been interrupted three times during this post, locally...
If the computer does run, eventually, it may be some directory damages or
    other sector or data errors have occurred in the computer's hard disk drive;
and you may have to consider buying Disk Warrior on disc so you can boot
the computer from its disc to repair the Directory on the hard disk drive.
Restoring is easier if you should have a complete clone of the computer on
an external hard disk drive; one that is capable of booting the computer.
    Good luck & happy computing!
