Won't Boot, purhaps HDD broken?

I have last edition Powerbook 1.67 17" G4 with 2GB Ram.
It runs great, is still fast and does everything i want still but suddenly stopped booting.
i can boot into the install disk. i reinstalled leopard and it ran fine for a another week and then one day firefox and OSX gave me spinning beach ball and froze. I had to reboot and then it just doesn't boot from the HDD.
I reinstalled again and this time no still no go.
Anyone else have this issue?

Prvt. Donut:
running the disk utility verify seems to have revealed something that i was suspecting all along.
Boot from the install disk as before and click *Repair Disk* instead of +verify disk+
Repair Disk
Insert Installer disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu (Panther and earlier) or Utilities menu (Tiger) and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel, and report if it says anything but Verified)
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need to use a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior

  • Won't boot from HDD

I made the mistake of running a Linux Live DVD on my MacPro 1.1 to see if it was as great as they say. When I took dvd out and reboot my machine I get an error message saying no boot disk found ( I think this is a resdual message from the Linux dvd). Make a long story short. My Mac will reboot into the Linux dvd, it will boot from a Windows 7 disk but it won't boot from either of my Snow Leopard install disks. Why is that? OH, and while it's in the press any key error mode, the usb keyboard won't work, no matter which usb port it's plugged into. How do I get the boot order to find the HDD without an OSX disk running?

Some additional information. I eventually pulled the HDD and plugged it into my iMac 27". Diskwarrior said the directories were damaged. I then supposedly repaired them. To test the drive I had the iMac reboot to that drive & it reboot fine. However when I plugged it back into the MacPro I got the grey screen with the Apple then it flickered back & forth between the Apple, a folder icon with a question mark and the universal NO icon (the circle with the diagonal slash). I'm wondering if the LINUX  dvd rewrote the GUID partition somehow?

  • My Satellite C50-B won't boot from HDD

    Machine Details:-
    Model Number: PSCMLA-03F07Q
    Serial Number: XE343127P
Computer won't boot from harddrive. No error messages, just Toshiba splash screen at end of self test.
A couple of times a reinstall of the operating system seemed to correct the problem but then it would go again, now the problem is consistent.
I've narrowed down possibilities to a BIOS fault, reasons-
System boots from USB without any problems. Installing of operating systems proceeds with no errors. Harddrive SMART data reports a perfectly healthy harddrive. Memcheck returns no errors.
The obvious solution is to reload the BIOS, just resetting it achieves nothing. But here's the problem.
The updated BIOS 1.4 that the Australian website offers is a Windows program and the computer can't boot Windows.
Obvious answer is to use a bootable USB stick with a "live" operating system on it but all of these systems are Linux and the BIOS update is a Windows program. So much for intelligent solutions.
Downloaded Bios version 1.7 from European site but the iso inside that rar file is empty, 25 Mb in size but nothing in it according to Linux. Tried running it's program on a Win7 64bit computer and it returns an error that it could not find the correct iso file.
I've submitted a support request by email to Toshiba but they reckon it could take 3 days to get a reply so I thought I'd ask here as well. Can anyone please point me to a working copy of the latest BIOS update disk for a Satelite C50-B laptop? Please note - this model doesn't have a CD drive so the iso must be compatable with USB boot.
    Cheers,
    Andrew.

    OK, found the answer.
Bios was corrupted but not critically so, turns out that this laptop should never have been able to boot linux in the first place. It's only because of the corrupted bios that I got away with it a few times. Ended up getting a valid copy from a blog in Russia.
Toshiba used to be a byword for quality in the computer world but this is definately no longer the case due to poor (cheap) new quality control practices. Also it seems that Toshiba is no longer really concerned with making computers, they're more interested in selling Windows and GE Insurance Policies disguised as extended warrantees.
From now on I will definately be making sure that my customers understand the troubles they can have when buying Toshiba Laptops.
As for running Linux, I'm including this so that it will help other poor unfortunates who thought they were buying a computer instead of just a Windows platform.
The problem started with Microsoft, their proprietry MBR boot system was no longer valid in a modern world and they had to adopt the open source GPT partitioning system with UEFI boot, but in typical Microsoft fashion they couldn't stick to the widely accepted standard conventions for how the EFI boot partition should be laid out. And Toshiba is Microsoft's new "friend with benefits" so instead of sending Microsoft back to the drawing board they've rewritten their bios so that it looks for the Microsoft Win8.1 EFI boot partition and ignores all others.
The quick answer is to edit your boot partition after install and make it look like Microsoft's. Please note that you don't have to do this with other brands of computer, only Toshiba.
Here's a link with full instructions including pictures, it's written for Ubuntu but is easily adapted to almost any other operating system.

  • 2nd HDD bay with HDD = notebook won't boot with HDD in 2nd HDD bay

I recently came into a Pavilion DV9308 Notebook. It was in decent shape, well looked new and since I like tinkering with laptops and the motherboard had the dreaded NVIDIA GPU failure going on, I sent the motherboard out to my motherboard dude and he put a newer NVIDIA video chip in, made some adjustments and modifications to the heatsink cooler etc. Along with my modifications including vent holes and sealing up the fan blowing assembly so when the fan turned on the hot air would leave the laptop it now runs Windows 7 64 bit with a 64GB Kingston OS SSHD and 4GB DDR2 800mhz ram. It runs like lightning and impresses people when they see it boot up in 15 seconds.
The problem is and the whole reason I picked this notebook to restore is because it has two acutal hard drive bays. Well ever since I've gotten the notebook It will not boot with a hard drive in both bays or a hard drive in Bay #2. I had to send the repaired motherboard back once because one of the ram slots wasn't working so this is happening on two different motherboards. I cannot find a reason why this is happening and have yet to find anyone that can help me with this. Can anyone explain to me what I'm doing wrong? I have all the correct drivers I think and the laptop runs at 130"F when pushed to the max! That is amazing compared to what it originally ran. It would be awesome if someone could please help me with this. Thanks.

Hello jason9922.  I understand your notebook won't boot with a hard drive in the second bay.
When you say that the notebook won't boot with a drive in the second bay what exactly do you mean?  Does the CAPS LOCK key flash or do you get an error?
When you have the hard drive installed can you access the BIOS?  If so, is the hard drive detected within the BIOS?
I'll keep an eye out for your response.  Have a great day!
Please click the white star under my name to give me Kudos as a way to say "Thanks!"

  • IMac won't boot from HDD - stays at gray screen

Quite simply, the iMac that we have in the house won't boot. It just gets stuck at the gray screen with the apple and the loading wheel (which is moving, so it's still not "frozen" per sey, but it sits there for going on 20 minutes). We have tried booting it in Safe Mode, which only succeeds in displaying the loading bar, but the computer still gets stuck. Single-User Mode works, but the fsck -fy command says that there are no errors. Booting from a Disk also does not work - we got it to get to the Setup Manager, but choosing the disk just freezes the computer. So we can't get into the Disk Utility. Loading in Verbose mode, the commands stop in the middle of "Running fsck on the boot volume", specifically "Launchcti: dubios permissions on file (skipping): /etc/mach_init.d"
The operating system is 10.6 something we believe, but we can't find out because we can't start up the computer. It is at least 10.6, if not newer.
Any ideas what's wrong and what could be done to fix it? We don't know a huge amount about Macs (although my brother knows a bit more about unix-based systems than I do). Any help would be appreciated!

Are you saying you haven't been backing up? If so and you have performed all the steps in the letter and reached the final step that says to do an erase and install then yeah you will lose all your data!
If you have not been backing up I hate to say it but this will be an extremely valuable lesson on why you should. That being said I'd also recommend bookmarking and reading the following 3 MacWorld articles on backing up, IMHO the common thread is not only should you be backing up but that you should do redundant backups.
    Backup Plan I
    Backup Plan II
    Backup Plan III
Personally I use Time Machine and Super Duper on 2 seperate EHDs to backup daily.

  • IMac won't boot from HDD or CD.  Help!?

    Hi,
I recently came back from holiday for a couple of weeks and sat down to start my iMac (24" C2D). The machine just sat at a white screen and wouldn't go anywhere. Thought, ah, I'll just reset the PRAM (unplugged power cable for a min or so), and still same problem. Eventually I got the mac to boot by holding down the power button, the long beep sounded and the mac booted. All was well, until the next time I powered it down. Same thing, however same resolution didnt work...
After numerous attempts holding c, I've managed to boot into the mac installer, which said it couldnt repair the drive through disk utility. As I have time machine backup, thought I'll just start from scratch. Created a new partition (just to make sure everything was fresh), verified disk (no problems), started installer and it crashed towards the very end of the install (just over 1 hour in) with errors of being unable to copy files. After another few hours, managed to boot from CD again, this time install started, left it running overnight, only to find the mac in the morning on, but with a black screen. I've had to power it off and now I'm left with the same issue of a white screen and being unable to boot from CD.
Does any of this make sense to anyone? Could be a failed HDD, but why would I have the issue with the iMac generally refusing to boot from CD? Ran hardware diagnostic (extended) and no problems found.
I now have no hair left...

I assume that model has a back up battery in it? If so, have you changed it recently? If not you may want to replace it. In the meantime, try removing it completely and see if it starts up any better. If the battery is right on the hairy edge of good/too low, it might be corrupting the PRAM (or whatever they call it now on new models) causing start up issues. If you remove it, you won't retain a lot of settings such as Date and Time, but you should also be able to boot up eat time with all default values.
I had the same sort of issue with my eMac and pulling the battery cleared it up. That was many months ago and one of these days I might get around to buying a replacement battery... or not.
    Cheers,
    Patrick

  • Early 2008 mac pro won't boot from hdd when ssd is installed

I have Mountain Lion 10.8.3 installed on my 1TB HDD in my early 2008 mac pro.  That is the only OS install on my mac.  I have an OWC SSD formatted but left as an empty drive that I am trying to use but when it's installed my mac hangs on the blank gray screen.
My mac cold boots fine and runs fine when the SSD is *not* installed.  When I shut down and put the SSD into a drive bay the mac does seem to boot ok the first time, but when the computer is off for a while it will not boot.  It just hangs on the blank gray screen (no apple logo).    As soon as I pull out the SSD, the computer boots fine and runs fine again.  I am not trying to boot off the SSD, I am booting off the HDD.  The correct drive (1tb hdd) is selected in startup disk.
OWC has been helping me and I have tested 3 SSD's.  So it does not appear to be a problem with their drive.
The mac will boot into safe mode with the SSD installed.  It will boot if I choose the boot drive with the option key at startup.
    Mountain Lion was clean installed.
Could it be some sort of library pref or cache issue?
Any recommendations on what to try?

A HT does not find a lot of errors.
It doesn't look for bad sectors or directory or file problems.
Clone your SSD now that you have a clean OS and has the Apple updates on it. Before you make changes.
Install TRIM Enabler 2.2+ on it and any boot volume, to enable TRIM and so that Disk Utility's Repair Disk will trim cells. Mountain Lion Recovery won't  which is a shame, so...
Clone and keep bootable backup clone of your system to use for maintenance.
A really bad directory on a system drive will cause interference from booting.
SSDs really need extra care, and even with TRIM, to be repaired from time to time and couple times a year, to do an erase and restore from a current image.
Of course Mac OS system even iwth apps is small and doesn't need to have any data or media and fits on 120GB usually just fine and still have a good enough amount free so TRIM and Garbage Collection can work properly and not get low on free pages. But 20GB free should be the minimum free, and better to have more, at least whatever total amount is written out in a month.

  • Mobo won't boot PATA HDD

Bad mobo or BAD MANUFACTURER (MSI)
In past 7 years I have built over 35 systems from the case up.  This is the first one that is a total and fruitless failure ... I don't profess to be a guru, but then a mobo doesn't frighten me either (but this one is destined for the trashbin).  Mobo will not work VANILLA out of the box ... in fact it won't work at all.  I have tweaked everything in the BIOS every which way but win.  It is obvious that it is a 'timing problem' - but no idea of how to resolve.  I have turned everything on and off in every combination possible ... it is a mystery ... including jumpering CMOS.  The only thing productive ... but not desired ... is it will work XP SP2+ on SATA with WD2000 200GB SATA drive "out of the box VANILLA".  I want to boot 2000 SP4 on PATA primary -- that is all - finish.  Total boot failure on PATA IDE primary or secondary.  Constant reboot.  It will boot XP SP2 on SATA and show 'the installed PATA devices' and Win Explorer will show files.  The IBM 13.5 GB Win2000 SP4 IDE on PATA primary or secondary boots on TWO other computers 100%.  ON MSI 6728 constant reboot cycle (VANILLA) - no tweak successful.  It will attempt to boot XP SP2+ but fails on VANILLA totally (Maxtor 120 GB PATA) ... which works on other mobo.  If you turn off CPU cache and/or HT in BIOS ... it makes slight progress ... it allows the XP 'failed' reboot screen choice ... and with 'enter' eventually shows the WinXP boot screen AND at about 3 bars on the progress bar ... reboots.  Timing problem where? what? How to fix? Mobo in trashcan?  Why will it boot XP on SATA ... but refuse THREE proven PATA HDD drives with good operating systems.  The D-bracket LEDs do not light at all/ever. HELP!!!  I'm tweaked out.

    PSU 300
No other devices installed except one at a time HDD described above.  Tried add A-drive ... no result.

Thanks Danny for your response.  I am afraid the answer is not that simple.
The system will boot thru SATA with Windows XP SP2 that was ghosted by Norton from Asus mobo P4P800.  It will NOT boot from a PATA drive ghosted from the same XP SP2 Asus mobo P4P800 disk.  By disabling L2 cache it will VERY SLOWLY boot up to the Windows Screen and allow about 2 - 3 bars in the Windows progress box ... then dies with a STOP and drive is inaccessable.  Funny ... that the drive was accessable up to a partial windows load.  Funny ... it will not even finish the BIOS loading and/or proceed to loading the OS if L2 cache is enabled.  It certainly has nothing to do with what is or is not on the disk ... since it does not get far enough to even recognize the disk was made on another computer.  But for the record Asus P4P800 and MSI Neo-2P both have the same 865  ICH5R Intel chipset.  Every conceivable setting in the "On Chip ATA Operating Mode" has been executed.  For some reason there is an unknown 'timing' problem on the PATA Primary that does not exist on the SATA.
The Asus P4P800 (Chipset 865 ICH5R) (P4 2.4 ghz with same memory modues)  will efficiently and quickly boot:
Win98 created on BE-6 mobo with chipset 440BX - WD 5 GB PATA HDD drive.
This system was transferred to a Maxtor 11 GB PATA HDD and boots on mobo Abit TH7 Raid using Intel Chipset 850.  This same PATA HDD boots equally well on another Abit series board ... TH7 II  .
The P4P800 boots Win 2000 SP4 from a PATA HDD (IBM 13.5 GB DJNA 371250)
created with Abit TH7 Raid (Intel 850 chipset) mobo.
A Windows XP SP2+ installed on Maxtor PATA 133 HDD 120GB using the TH7 Raid (chipset Intel 850 ICH2) Mobo performs flawlessly on either of the Asus P4P800 Intel chipset 865 computers.
A Win2000 SP4 installation 'ghosted' from the Asus P4P800 systems performs flawlessly on the Abit TH7 Raid system using a Seagate Barracuda 120 GB PATA drive.
Two other systems running Windows XP SP2+ ghosted from the Asus P4P800 onto two 80 GB PATA Maxtor HDD run on 2 TH& Raid sytems boards without any problem.
Whereas all of these PATA HDD work flawlessly on either the P4P800 or TH7 Raid and TH7 II computers ... none of these same PATA HDD will work on the MSI mobo.
The HUGE question ... why won't ANY of these PATA HDD boot on the comparable Intel 865 ICH5R chipset on the MSI Neo-2P (6728IMS) mobo.  The only thing that will work on this MSI mobo is the P4P800 system ghosted onto a SATA drive.  It boots like it should ... and then it can even read the previously "inaccesable" PATA HDD installed on Primary.
The finger is pointing at a 'timing error', the Intel P4 3.0e Ghz processor and the MSI motherboard.  Somewhere this marriage will NOT work on the PATA HDD input.  Do I eat these TWO MSI NEO-2p mobo ... or is there possible salvation.  I've jumpered the BIOS  a couple times to 'get clean' BIOS ... to create a simple plain vanilla system ... nothing tweaked.  Plain jane out of the box does not work.
First time in 35 different mobo from FIC, Abit, Asus, Intel, Gigabit, Tyan and a few others.  1 Failure out of over 45 boards is not bad, I guess.  Sadly, the settings you gave have been tried a dozen times over, as well as several dozen more combinations.  Any further suggestions are welcome.

  • Mac OS 8 won't boot from HDD - Performa 630

    Hiya again,
I'm working on a Performa 630 for a friend and trying to reinstall the OS to mac a better system, I've already upgraded the RAM with a 32MB stick to make 36MB and have given it a 20GB HDD. I've tried to install Mac OS 8 to the HDD and can complete the installer, however on reboot the system shows the happy mac icon for a quick second before the screen goes white and restarts and shows the ? floppy icon. I haven't a clue why it's doing this as it's supposed to support OS8 and the specs are adequete and I am formatting it to the Mac OS Standard (HFS) file system so I'm at a loss.
    Any help greatly apprieciated, thanks.
Edit: Oh, and when booting back into the installer CD, it says it's rebuilding the desktop on the HDD, just if this makes a difference.

Are you using the retail/universal installer OS 8 disk (white with large "8" across the face of it) or are you using another model Mac's Restore disk?  If it's a Restore disk, that can cause problems because they have a model-specific OS build that doesn't necessarily support other models.  If you used the retail/universal OS 8 installer disk, did you use the included version of Drive Setup 1.3 to format the hard drive?  If you did, that's the first thing that you should correct.  That version of Drive Setup had a bug in it, and many years ago, Apple sent out "Drive Setup 1.3.1" CDs to customers upon request.  You should download Drive Setup 1.6.1 and copy it to a floppy disk.  It is a compressed file, so you'll need Stuffit Expander to expand it.  Once expanded, you'll have a self-mounting image file that you can double-click.  Drag the disk image icon to your floppy disk to copy Drive Setup to it.  When the Performa is booted to the installer CD, insert the floppy disk and run Drive Setup.  Do not choose to format the hard drive, but choose the "Update Disk Driver" option (I think it's listed under the "Functions" drop-down menu at the top of the screen).  After updating the disk driver, try rebooting the Performa from the internal HDD.  If you still have problems, you may need to reinstall the OS 8.  If you do, you should uncheck the "Update Disk Driver" option, so that the newer disk driver isn't replaced with the older version.

  • IMac G4 won't boot, cd-tray broken

    Hi,
My iMac G4 gave up on me last night. I tried to boot it, but it doesn't get past the gray screen with the Apple logo and the spinning thingie. I would have re-installed or such, but the cd-reader is broken, it rejects all cd's that I put in there, including the install disks. I tried booting it from my iPod, which contains the whole Tiger boot cd, bit that doesn't work either.
Can I still save it? Otherwise, can I re-use some of its components for my Mac Mini? By the way, I own another iMac 3,06 Ghz, latest gen.
    Cheers,
    Pilopew

An iMac G4 uses a standard tray-loading optical drive, compared to other iMacs (older and newer) with slot-loading drives. There is a constraint on length, but it still falls within what is typical for an optical drive.
OWC sells drives that they specifically say work with an iMac G4
    http://eshop.macsales.com/staticpages/Framework.cfm?page=superdrive/sdl_imacg4.html
You may not be able to order from OWC where you live, but perhaps you can find the same brands and models. This is a well-known take-apart guide for the iMac G4, if you want to get an idea of the work involved.
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imacg4/imacg4takeapart.html
Edit: Just noticed you have another iMac. You may be able to use that iMac's optical drive. Insert the Mac OS X installation disc you want to use into the Intel iMac, and make sure it is recognized. Start up that Intel iMac in FireWire Target Disk Mode.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Connect it to your old iMac using a FireWire cable. Start up the old iMac with the Option key held down, to get Startup Manager. See if the Mac OS X installation disc in the Intel Mac appears on the list of startup disk options. If it does, select it and try to continue. Hopefully, your old iMac will boot up from the Intel iMac's optical drive and you can run your re-installation.

  • IMac G4 won't boot, cd-tray broken, version 2.0

So, my last topcic (found here: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2197457&tstart=0 ) covered the fact what to do with my iMac, seeing it wouldn't boot, and the cd-tray was broken, so no re-install.
Kenichi Watanabe suggested I'd use my new Intel iMac to try and work around it.
So, I connected the Intel and the PPC through FireWire, and inserted the Tiger Disk. Nope, nothing.
The PPC wouldn't recognize anything, except for it's own harddrive. Oh noes.
Anyways, I figured, if I booted my intel on the Tiger install disk, could I install Tiger on a selectable external drive?(that being the PPC obviously)
I did a bit of research on that, and I was wondering, where can I get a Intel-bootable Tiger install DVD? Seems the black retail Tiger-DVD does not boot on the Intel iMac.
    Cheers

The only Intel-based Macs that could run Tiger 10.4.x shipped with their own
specific copy; the retail Tiger 10.4 install disc set is not Universal and so will
NOT work to install a Tiger version in an Intel-based Mac.
And an older OS X system will not work in a computer newer than it's build date.
{The suggested replacement optical drives in the linked reply you posted from
OWC would be among the prime choices for a replacement; and there are a
    few great online DIY pages on how to replace optical and hard drives yourself.}
Was the Intel-Mac able to be booted into FireWire Target Disk mode, so the
optical drive is it could be (perhaps/maybe) used as an external DVD drive?
Another option is to seek & find an externally enclosed FireWire based DVD
equivalent of a SuperDrive. Some third party FW optical drives can do that.
Then it would be a matter of finding out if the computer could recognize it
at some point in the startup, and have it "think" that drive is its own internal.
And that fancy newer computer drive may so totally out-class the old PPC
hardware, to fully reject such an idea!
Other than these passing glances, I have no real new information.
    However the cookie crumbles...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • MacBook won't boot to HDD or detect network boot option

    Hello,
    I have a MacBook 4.1 with a 2.4 Ghz Intel C2D, 2Gb of RAM, 250Gb HDD running with 10.5.3.
My main issue is that whenever I try booting my MacBook to the hard drive the MacBook gets hung up. This happens at the grayish screen with the large apple picture in the middle and the spiny loading thing. This seems to be happening every time.
Also, my MacBook isn't detecting the network boot option when it should be.
I'm able to boot to a CD just fine.
Anyone have any suggestions? I'd like to try and get it going to the hard drive since I have some documents I'd like to get off. I did manage to get it working for a couple of hours. I did that by removing one of the RAM cards and then resetting the PRAM.
    I'd appreciate anyone's help.
    Thanks,
    Smerky

On your desktop, double click "Install Mac OS X". Enter your administrator password and wait for your mac to restart. After that navigate to Utilities-->Disk Utility.

  • 8510W won't boot. HDD LED blinking orange-green

My 4 year old HP Compaq 8510W was working fine until a few days ago. It ran a bit hot so I decided to reboot to let it cool down. After shutting it down, it didn't want to boot again. Instead the fan starts turning fast (and loud), the power light comes on like normal and the HDD light starts repeating the following blinking sequence; orange fast, green normal, pauze and repeat. It doesn't respond to any button or key, I need to hold the power button to shut it off.
I was suspecting the HDD, as I don't hear it turning, only skipping once every 30 seconds or so. I pulled the HDD out and plugged it into my PC and the drive worked fine. I took this opportunity to backup all my files onto my PC.
If it is not the HDD I don't know what it is. Has anyone had this problem too? And (how) did you solve it?
My 8510W is running on Vista 32-bit.

Yes. Most likely the video chip on the motherboard went bad, or the CPU fried, or some other circuit on the motherboard went south.
There is no troubleshooting guide for your notebook--only a service manual which is only going to tell you how to remove and replace parts.
Maybe it is time to upgrade? I like buying HP business notebooks on eBay.
If you like the mobile workstations, go for the 8530w. Some of them have webcams.  I have the 6930p and am very happy with it.
Or, if you really like yours, get another 8510w. You may be better off in the long run than tearing into yours and not being able to fix the problem after throwing money and parts at it, or paying someone to fix it.

  • Meg 180 won't boot from HDD

Repair install of Windows XP appeared to work perfectly, but after install and removal of XP install disk PC wouldn't boot.  Noticed initially that IDE drive detect took approxiamtely 90 seconds.  Tried a repair of boot sector and MBR, no help.  Notice during MBR repair that drive was showing as HDD 2?  Attempted boot device order in all possible combintations, (CD, HDD0, HDD1, HDD2, etc,) no help.Moved drive to another computer, boots normally.
Attached HDD to IDE CD-ROM channel in Mega.  Drive detect occurrs instantly and computer boots normally.  I'd try swapping cables, but that requires more surgery than I feel comfortable with, considering the warranty.  Anyone else seen this problem?
Any or all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It turns out the Mega 180 primary HDD channel doesn't like Western Digital drives configured with the jumper in the Master position.  As Wonkanoby pointed out, the Western Digital drives are defaulted to Master with no jumper.  No other controller has appeared to care yet, but obviously the Mega primary channel does.  Thanks for all of the tips and especially to Wonkanoby who provided the info that cured the problem.  The Mega is up and running now and happily playing DVD's.

  • K7N2 won't boot from HDD when cold

Sometimes when this PC is first turned on, it goes through the POST, detects both the hard drive and the optical drive - but then tries to boot off CD as if the hard drive is not present. It always happens when booting from cold, if I leave it a minute or two then reset it normally then boots from the hard drive as it's supposed to.
I tried diagnostic checks on the hard drive but they showed no problems.
    Any ideas?

What PSU you are using?(List PSU details look for them over PSU sticker)
Try with one memory stick only.
