Won't burn DVDs, rejecting various DVDs, what to do?

Hi all, I've had my MBP for about a year and a half now, and as of late it's not let me burn DVDs, quite some time ago, and also rejects various DVDs (brand new ones, no scratches on some not copies, genuine DVDs) and I don't know why.
I do have an extended warranty of 3 years, what do I do?

Since I just burned half a dozen single and dual layer DVDs this week and I'm up to date with updates, I think we can scratch that idea. Though if the update didn't quite take on your computer...If you updated via the software updater you can always download the combo updater and apply it again.
Media can be an issue - I have DVDs that my old MacBook burned just fine but my MBP won't. (Different drive manufacturers.) Dirt and dust can also be an issue. I'm not a big fan of optical drive cleaners but if you are out of warranty it is worth a try - for that matter if you are still in warranty it is worth a try. The next step would be a call to Apple.

  • External Drive won't burn DVD's

I have a Sony external DVD/CD burner attached to my G4 it is capable of burning all formats of DVD and CD. The System Profiler recognises it and tells me all the formats it will burn.
However when I put a blank DVD-R in to burn a disc image, it won't burn and it tells me it can't burn to this disc and to insert recordable media.
It's not the DVD's as they burn with no problems in my other G4, either disc image, iDVD, Toast etc though this one has a superdive.
    Any thoughts on this?

    Hi
What interface are you using to connect it?
That error code in Tiger is often related to the Finder, relaunching the Finder can fix it. In Panther though, I don't know if the same is true, can't hurt to try, however.
If you just purchased it, I would strongly recommend returning it for a drive from a vendor with a higher standard of Mac-support, such as LaCie, or a vendor such as OWC, that sells a variety of cased-drives.

  • IMac5,7 running 10.6.7 won't burn DVD's

Reads DVD's, reads and burns CD's but I get a communication error when attempting to burn a DVD. Tried multiple media. Tried cleaning disk. Tried to burn data and movie DVD's at various speeds without success. The disk has the tiniest sliver burned onto it and then ejects. On movie disks, it will actually play the menu and start to play the movie but then stops moments into the movie. Data disks leave an "Untitled DVD" icon in the "Places" sidebark in Finder. I can't get rid of these unless I clean up ~/Library/Preferencescom.apple.sidebarlists.plist. Already attempted https://discussions.apple.com/message/11790618#11790618
    Any would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

    Thanks Dr. Smoke,
I will look into purchasing a new set of DVD's in -R & -RW and try my fate at burning them tomorrow. I will let you know how I make out.
I do have an unrelated question for you if you care to answer it. I use Retropect to back up everything and since they sold off to EMC, I really have not been all that thrilled with their performance. Would you recommend another application that is better?

Hi, Daniel. Welcome to the Discussions.
    1.Your DVR-104 will not burn DVD+R or +RW
media since those aren't supported by that optical
drive. It supports DVD-R/-RW as noted here:
    DVD-Write: -R,
    -RW
So, if you've only DVD+R/RW media on hand, that may
    explain the problem.
    2. What is the exact text of any error messages or
alert dialogs that are displayed when you insert a
    suitable, blank DVD.
    3. Immediately after the problem occurs, again
assuming DVD-R/RW, check the ends of t
    hese Console logs for clues.
    Good luck!

  • Idvd won't burn DVD of iphoto slideshow

Using iphoto 5.0.4 I've created a slide show, added music etc. It all works wonderfully in iphoto until I try to "send to idvd". (idvd 5.0.1) The idvd dialogue box indicates that it is exporting and everything seems in order until I plink the "burn" button in the box that appears when export has completed. Things whir for a while then I get an error message about burn failed. The rest of the error message varies from time to time but is usually something about menu. It sometimes ejects the partially burned disk, othertimes I have to shutdown and/or restart to get the disc to eject. I did get one satisfactory burn out of 11 attempts (I'm persistent). I'm using TDK DVD+R 1-16x disks.
Just putting the jpeg photos onto a disc works fine but its snafu time trying to burn a slideshow
This is what System Profiler says about my DVD drive:
    MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-846:

Do I have a software or hardware problem? Is there a good way to reliably burn DVD's of slideshows.
On the one burn that worked, when played back, the pictures are not at all sharp or clear yet the original photos in iphoto and iphoto's slideshow are quite crisp. Is this just what I can expect from a burned DVD or are the burned slideshow photos supposed to be crisp?

    Welcome to the forums.
You'll see various posts about image quality; one improvement results from resizing your photos -- see this and other suggestions at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4399400#4399400
In terms of workflow, I prefer to Share/Export my slideshows from iPhoto to full-quality Quicktime movies. You can double-check the resulting movie before dragging it onto the iDVD menu area (not into a drop zone).
For burning, you'll reduce errors by using slow burn speeds and high quality discs. Verbatim is often recommended around here; I also like Sony. DVD-R are the most compatible with players, but perhaps this isn't a dramatic difference compared to DVD+R. To better control burn speeds, first create a disc image (Save as Disc Image) and then copy the disc image to your DVD (use Roxio Toast or Apple's Disk Utility).
There are a variety of other tips to improve the consistency of burns, so write back if you still have troubles.

  • Both Superdrives won't burn DVDs or CDs

Hello everyone.  I'm having a serious problem.  Both of the Superdrives in my MacPro (1.1) will not burn DVDs or CDs.  They read discs just fine.  They just won't burn -- in ANY program (DVD Studio Pro, Finder, iDVD).
I have scoured the forums to answers to this problem, and NOTHING has worked.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue.
Here is a list of things I've tried:
    Disc cleaner
    Reducing burning speed
Different DVD media.  I've tried every brand and speed out there.  Verbatim, Memorex, Sony, generics, etc.
Re-install operation system.  The issue started on Leopard.  A reinstall didn't help.  I'm not on Snow Leopard and having the same problem.
Checked connections. (all plugs are snug)
    Some thoughts:
I find it hard to believe that this is a case of bad superdrives.  They both stopped working at the same time.
I have an external firewire burner that works just fine.
Thanks for whatever help or advice you can provide!

I'm not sure if we can post links to other mac forum threads, but I found this:
    Open System Preferences.
    Click on "International"
Under "Languages": Drag any of the other languages to the top,
then drag English back to the top.
Set "Order for sorted lists" to English
Set "Word Break" to English (United States, computer)
    Close System Preferences
    Restart computer
What you can try is typing the exact phrase of the error message into google... in parentheses, and you will find a lot of hits, and maybe the answer. Good luck!
PS... I know the "fix" above sounds like nonsense, and it might be, but several claimed it worked...

  • IPhoto won't burn DVDs

iPhoto is refusing to burn DVDs-- it says it can't connect to the drive. But I burned a DVD in finder just fine. What can I do?
I just got my macbook back with a new HD and did a TM restore, although I don't see why that would be related.

It doesn't matter if you empty the Trash or not . A new pref file was created when you opened iPhoto.
Are you still at 10.5.1? If so I suggest you download and apply the Mac OS X 10.5.5 Combo Update followed by a repair of disk permissions with Disk Utility. Then try again.
If you can burn from the other account then your primary account is the culprit. It could be a preference file other that iPhoto's. To determine if that's the case try the following:
    Trouble Shooting Preferences in Leopard
1 - Create a folder titled "Preferences A" on the Desktop.
2 - Open the working Preferences folder, HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences, and move the contents to the Preferences A folder on the Desktop.
3 - Make a duplicate copy of the Preferences A folder on the Desktop as a precautionary backup.
4 - With the working Preferences folder empty run the application again and determine if the problems is fixed.
NOTE: you may have to drag the contents of the working folder to the trash and empty if moving the contents to the A folder only copies them instead of moving.
5 - If the problem is fixed:
A - open the working Preferences folder (HD/Users/your_name/Library/Preferences).
B - Open the Preferences A folder on the Desktop, select all of the contents and drag them into the working Preferences folder.
C - When the Copy window pops up check the "Apply to All" check box and then click on the Don't Replace button as seen here.
6 - If the problem is NOT fixed, empty the working Preferencess folder and move the contents of the Preferences folder on the desktop back into it.

  • PB won't burn DVD-RWs

I have tried since purchasing my powerbook to burn DVD-RWs... but to no avail. I keep having the computer simply spit out the DVD-RW, and DVD-Rs as well as giving me error codes such as 0x8002006D. I have read about resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, and PMU, but those didn't do anything for me. The strange thing is that I can burn CD-RWs and CD-Rs with no problem. It only spits out DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs nearly 90% of the time. When I do try to burn, it gives me the aforementioned error code. I am using Memorex, Sony, and Maxell for DVDs and the same brands for CDs. Is it hardware or software related issue, because I need to decide whether or not I should talk to applecare about it to get it serviced. Thanks for the help!
    Ty

Let me see if I can help out.
Just because your drive says it is capable of 8X doesn't mean it will burn at 8X.
Depending on what you are using to try to burn with in the way of software, I suggest you burn at a slower Speed. like 2X. Apples Software is entry level and it works but many users find harder to use than the top of the line in burning software like Roxio's Toast 7.
Here is the explination on the different DVD's.
    http://www.videohelp.com/dvd
Just bear one thing in mind.
When it comes to DVD Players, Formats, and Burners, of the hundreds of different manufactures, All are opting to be the Industry Standard, and it appears they insert there little chinks that almost force users to use there products exclusively.
There is always a backlash from these marketing ploys.
In a perfect world you would think any DVD would work in any DVD Player and Computer but sorry it is not so there are so many things that come into play. Format, Speed, Brand, Software used. Any one or combination can affect the process.
    The problem is multi-dimensional.
First check in your particular profiler on EXACTLY what type(FORMAT) of DISK's your burner will burn.
Next please do not just randomly go out and buy a spool of 30 50 or 100 disc's because they are on sale.
There is a HUGE difference in the type format disc's you buy
There is also a HUGE difference in the BRAND you choose, some are junk.
There is also a HUGE Difference in the SPEED of the media you choose.
If any one or a combination of any of the 3 mentioned above can cause burn error's or no burn at all or spit the disk out.
So it is a good idea to do a little homework on your Optical Drive and see just exactly what it is capable of and what it will use for media.
    (ONE LAST NOTE)
Many of the Media Manufactures are becomming aware that many of the Apple Burners are having trouble with there Media. Maxell has just come out with a brand new one that is. Maxell 16X DVD-R.
The key is read the packaging. this new media tells you that it will burn at any speed from 1X through 16X, and it works very well on the older Optical Drives. I also opt to use the individual that include the cases there seems to be much better quality, not like that of the spools.
Remember Apples Drives to date are much pickier than those used in the PC community.
    Cheers Don

  • Purchased Premiere 13. Won't burn dvd of slideshow created in elements 12.

I created a slideshow in Elements 12. Saved as WMV. Tried to burn DVD. Get message inviting me to try Premiere 13 trial. Have already purchased Premiere 13, but Elements 12 doesn't recognize that.
Tried opening Premier 13, importing my WMV from file. Go to create DVD. After seeming to go through the entire burn, I get a message that says something is stopping the complete burn. Provides a link that takes me to a page not available. Is there a way to get my Elements 12 to link to Premiere 13? What else can I try?

    susanK
If you have outputted your Elements Organizer 12 slideshow to obtain a wmv file saved to your computer hard drive, you should be
able to import that into Premiere Elements 13 Editor with the Editor's Add Media/Files and Folders and edit and export accordingly.
There is no integration between the Elements Organizer 12 Slideshow Editor and Premiere Elements 13/Elements Organizer 13.
However, you can convert the 12 catalog in 13. But 13 will require you to convert the slideshow in that catalog to its new format which
is significantly different from what you have used in 12.
Have you updated 13 to 13.1 yet. If you have, sounds like the program is using a new 13.1 feature which leaves you with .iso image file
if you hit burn to failure. You can take that .iso image file to DVD-VIDEO on DVD using a free program named ImgBurn.
You can also use Publish+Share/Disc/DVD  burn to Folder (4.7 GB) to obtain a saved folder containing the VIDEO_TS Folder that you can
get to DVD-VIDEO on DVD disc using the ImgBurn program.

  • IDVD 2.1 won't burn DVD's on System OS X 10.4.3

I recently upgraded from 10.2 to 10.4.3. Now I am unable to burn DCVD's with iDVD 2.1. IT JUST WON'T BURN. There is nothing on the disk or it gives me an error message at the end of the burning process or quits unexpectedly. There seems to be a compatability problem. Can anyone tell me what is happening?
    Clemens

You're not alone! I can't get iDVD 4.01 to burn on OS 10.4.3, but it will burn on my second H.D. on 10.3.9????
If I want iLife bugs with no help from AppleCare I get buy a PC and save some bucks! I've been a loyal user from the beginning , but if Apple is going to start abandoning its software and leave it with bugs to quickly push out upgrades with more bugs I may have to re-evalute my purchases!
Are they ever going to fix the bugs in iMovie 4.01 or just go on to iMovie 5, 6 and 7! Sometimes I'd trade the the new "toys" put into the upgrades for reliability.

  • IDVD won't burn DVD

Using IDVD 5. and Sony-R DVD's. Trying to burn slide show imported from IPHOTO, and graphics imported from IMOVIE, and get an error #1 or multiplexing problem.

Man, you're about the millionth person to post an error #1. Search the group for possible solution(s).
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Disk Utility to burn the DVD.
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (not the .img, the one below) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. Your SuperDrive tray will open. Insert a recordable DVD. (DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and Tiger.
b Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93006
Try Verbatim DVD-R rather than Sony.

  • EMac won't burn DVD

When I try to burn a DVD, an error message pops up that says "Startup disk is full (message error-34).
    How do I remedy this?

    Welcome To  Discussions dnewsman!
What size is the Hard Drive, and how much space is available?
    Here is some additional information.
Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
Review the suggestions, in the documents that I have linked to below.

Is the eMac shutdown overnight, or does it run 24/7?
Have you ever run any routine Maintenance procedures?
If you turn the PowerBook off nightly, the Background Maintenance Tasks, are never run.
These can also be run, using a Third-Party utility, or manually using Terminal, to run the CRON Commands.
    I use MacJanitor, when necessary.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
    Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
    At the prompt, type:
    sudo periodic daily
    Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
    sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
    Repeat again, with command:
    sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here
Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • IDVD won't burn DVD, previews fine

    Hello,
I am trying to burn a fcp 5 project onto a dvd+r with idvd. the project previewed fine in the idvd, but when i put the dvd in, it says it can't read the dvd and that there's nothing in the drive. The dvds are brand new and have never been used. I burn cd in itunes fine, any suggestions?

    Hi St Louis:
Are you sure you have a Super Drive? Check your System Profiler. It should look like this:
    Manufacturer: MATSHITA
    Model: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-825
    Revision: DBN7
    Serial Number:
    Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
    Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
    Removable Media: Yes
    Detachable Drive: No
    Protocol: ATAPI
    Unit Number: 0
    Socket Type: Internal
Also, if you do have a Super Dive, you may want to try DVD-R.

  • IDVD won't burn DVD, keeps showing up with "You Inserted a blank DVD..."

I keep getting the error during the encoding process for burning. The prompt shows up as if i just inserted a new blank DVD, and gives me an encoding video error.
Does anyone know how to prevent this?

You can set preferences within apps like roxio toast to automatically launch when Blank dvd media is inserted into your mac / burner. And if this is the case then you may need to address these preferences so they don't overtake iDvd from the start.
Check your preferences for burning a dvd as to which app/s you have selected to perform this function. Perhaps you have another app other than iDvd selected.
Hope this helps but if not just come on back.

  • Tiger Won't Burn DVDs

I just installed Tiger on my silver G4. Everything seemed to work fine until I tried to burn a DVD in my Super Drive. The message reads,
"Burning the disc failed because communication to the disc drive failed (Error code 0x80020022)"
The drive has worked before. It is very frustrating. I've wasted several DVDs just trying to get this to work. I'm using HP 16x DVD-R at the slowest burn speed.

    Thanks for responding.
I updated from Jaguar to Tiger doing an "easy install" from the recently purchased disc. After the install, the software update utility kicked in and did some security updates.
The System Profiler has only a category called, "Disc Burning" and only lists the following:

get this error when burning to Maxell CD-R:
