Won't charge unless macbook is off

My 4 day old macbook won't charge its battery while it's open and turned on. When I plug in the adapter the light will do its usual (green for a few seconds and then turn amber) and the icon on my desktop will indicate the battery is charging- but this only lasts about 2 minutes before the light turns off and my desktop icon goes back to showing how long until my battery runs out (and it does run out, so I know its not just a problem with the adapter's light.) The battery charges just fine when the computer is off or asleep.
I'm new to Macs and this is my first laptop of any kind so my question is: am I just making a mistake or is there a problem with the hardware that I should have checked out? Thanks in advance for any help!

That was the first problem I had with my Apple one year ago. It has only gotten worse! If I had known it was the beginning of a bigger problem which Apple refuses to admit to, would have returned it right then and there. I have had that problem fixed and am on my 4th going on my 5th battery and am constatntly sending it back to Apple -- After getting your situation fixed, my computer now runs hot, fan runs quickly and battery dies. It is a symptom of a bigger problem -- Unfortunately, Apple has not been able to fix it and I am truly disappointed in their attitude towards what seems to be a common problem which is known by many but not admitted by Apple.

Try cleaning out the phone's connector.  Else take it in to Apple, you have a 1 year warranty.

  • Ipad won't charge unless turned off

My iPad 2 won't charge unless turned off and in some cases not at all.  It does this off and on.  Typically, it'll stop charging when turned on and I can turn it off and charge it to over 40% (or so. . . .it varies) and then it will charge the rest of the way while turned on. And then, I can go through long periods --maybe a month-- where it will charge as usual (while on) but then suddenly it will stop charging while on and will only do so when off.  This back and forth has gone on for several months. Today it stopped charging even when off.  Given history, it might kick in and start charging suddenly but I fear that the battery could run out this time and I'll not be able to charge and restart it. I'm at 20%.  I am using the iPad 10W charger and I have a new one so the cord is good and it works to charge my iPhone as well.  I have also tried rebooting the system, holding down the home and start button.  Anyone have experience with this and a solution?

you can also try the universal troubleshooting step of resetting your iPad. No data is lost so don't worry.
You can reset your iPad by simultaneously pressing and holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until you see the Apple Logo. This can take up to 15 seconds so be patient and don't release the buttons until the logo appears.
Try again to see if the problem persists.

  • New MBP battery won't charge unless closed

I've had my 17' MBP for 3 months and I'm having more issues with it than my last 2 macbooks combined. My problem now is that the battery won't charge unless the laptop is closed, and yes, I use only Apple authentic chargers. I first thought it was a bad charger, so I ordered a new one from Apple and it still won't charge while I"m using it. Any ideas on what to do? Or why this would happen. I'm also having problems with trying to restart it after software updates, it tells me that Mail won't close so I can't restart, even when I quit mail prior to initiating the restart.
I have a feeling I'll get my money's worth out of Apple care this time around and I like the removable/replaceable battery on the older laptops, I wish they wouldn't have changed that.
    Thanks!
    Kara

Went over my laptop with an Apple Genius today and did two things, one or both of which contributed to resolving this issue.  The first thing was actually shutting the computer down and restarting it.  I typically don't do that for weeks or months at a time and this can help some of the internal power settings establish a baseline.
The 2nd thing, which I think had the most impact, was to take the 980+ items on my desktop and move them into a single folder on my desktop.  Each file icon on your desktop in OS X gets drawn using the same procedure as the one that renders an open Finder window. So each desktop icon is a separate object that gets managed, rendered and displayed by your graphics card and that means my graphics card was doing the work it would take to display over 1000 different Finder windows. That work is shouldered largely by the GPU, so it does not show up as CPU core activity in the Activity Monitor graphical plots, but it does seem to show up as part of the percentage of Finder CPU time that is reported in the list of running processes in Activity Monitor. That Finder CPU percentage was spiking a lot, as different events triggered a refresh of my desktop. I think it was this extreme overtasking of the GPU that was driving my laptop's power needs beyond what the adapter could supply.  This would explain the correlation some people see with this problem and watching video, as well as a strange 25 second hang that I would see in the Finder after using Quick Look.  This would also explain why people report having this problem recur after having their entire laptop or power adapter replaced. This is an easy fix to try, at least. YMMV.

  • Battery won't charge unless I jiggle the charger

For the past week or two, when I plug my iBook in, it won't charge unless I jiggle the connection just right. Weirdly, the charge-indicator light turns orange when I plug it in, but you can tell by the battery icon that it's still running off the battery. If I jiggle things just right, though, I can get it to charge.
The battery is fairly new, still has more than 4000 mAh, and relatively few loadcycles. Would a new power adapter solve the problem? If so, anyone have a tip on where to get a cheap one? I don't really feel like dropping $79 on one at the Apple Store, as I'm not sure how much longer I'm going to keep the ol' iBook.

    Hi Richard,
Thanks for the input. I was worried that someone might say something like that. The plug on my power adapter has been a little bent for the last year or so. My cat ran by one day, knocked it out, and bent it pretty badly. I bent it back with pliers, but I couldn't get it to look perfect, and I've been a little worried that the pressure over time could have broken the jack loose.
Hopefully that's not the problem, though, as I don't own a soldering gun. I'm going to try to borrow a power adapter from a friend first and see if the problem isn't coming from that end of the connection.
(P.S. I'm the same person who posted the question. I just realized that I was logged in under a different name.)

  • My iPhone 4 wont charge unless it is off. can't restore

Hello everyone. My iPhone 4 wont charge unless it is off. It is currently running ios 5.1. I can't restore because it won't connect when turning on! I have tried updating to ios6 via software update tab but it just responds with software update failed!

Well, look it up on the internet.  Surely if you were able to find this site, you can find out where there's an Apple store near you.

This sounds to me like a hardware issue. Take it to an Apple Store or Apple authorized repair service.

Iphone 5 won't charge unless I wiggle the cable around to fine a spot where it works. It's not the cable/charger as it works perfectly in other iPhone 5's. I haven't even had it a year so it's still under warranty and the phone is in very good condition and has never been abused/dropped etc. I'm taking it into apple tomorrow for an appointment. Has anyone had this problem? if so, what happens? thanks

I had the same problem and took my iPhone 5 into the Apple store.  What happened was a little embarrassing.  The genius took out a "special tool" (a paper clip) and began digging out an unimaginable amount of lint from the lightning connector port.  After that I was able to connect the cord and charge without any issues.
A few days after, I realized that my problems associated with the remote/mic not working on my ear pods might be due to the same issue.  (The volume and action buttons on the ear pods sometimes were not responsive)  I grabbed a paper clip and began digging.  Again, a large wad of lint came out of the headphone port and my ear pods have worked perfectly since.

  • Lenovo B570 Won't charge unless power cord is in a certain postition.

My Lenovo B570 is faced with a new problem. Now my laptop wont charge unless the power cord is in a certain position. I want to send it in repair but i am afraid that i will have to pay MORE money to repair the computer. I tried a universal charger i had and it is the same thing.

    Hi kschumake83,
I agree that it sounds like a problem with the laptop power jack, but it's not soldered onto the board.  It sits in a housing and it has a cable that plugs into the board.  Here's what the power jack looks like.

  • Help my iPhone 4 doesn't want to charge unless it's off

I have iPhone 4 only charges if it's off, when I have it on and I put it to charge when it's on and it doesn't charge what do I do

    Hello there, Laurawashere.
The following Knowledge Base article offers up some great, in-depth steps for troubleshooting charging issues with your iOS device:
iPhone and iPod touch: Charging the battery
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1476
    Resolving issues
If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.
Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.
Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • My iPad won't charge unless it's turned off. What's wrong?

my ipad (2nd generation) suddenly stopped charging. the charger is not the problem as it still charges my iphone. I then used my iPad charger to charge my iPad but it still won't work. I plugged it in my laptop and I get nothing. I can only charge it if it's turned off and I don't know why this is happening.
This happened to me months ago but for some reason it fixed itself. It's really frustrating especially since I barely use my iPad and now it's acting up on me.

I have a similar problem. My iPad battery will actually discharge when it is plugged into a charger and I am using it. I spoke to Apple Care and they recommended that I restore to factory settings. That was fine, until I restored from back up and the problem returned. I took my iPad to a Genius Bar and the battery diagnostic tests showed the battery was in good condition. Yesterday I set up the iPad as a new iPad and it had a 100% charge, which it held for sometime and after approximately 8 hours of sporadic use, the battery was still 55% charged. When I returned home, I installed some of my favourite apps, including setting up the iCloud for iWork files and this morning the iPad was again losing battery charge when it is plugged into the charger. It seems as this must be a software glitch - any suggestions?

  • Blackberry Tour won't charge unless I turn it off

Okay I've been charging my Blackberry with a usb cord because I no longer have a wall charger. Over the last two days I haven't been able to charge my phone with the USB cord unless I turn my phone off. My phone will show that it is charging, but yesterday it sat on the usb cord for 5 hours and didn't do anything until I turned the phone off and then it charged. Any reason for this? I assume if there was a short in the wire it wouldn't charge at all no? Can anyone help me out?

    Try this -
When you device is POWERED ON, remove the battery for a minute, and then reinsert the battery. This make a reboot to your device which minor issues with the BlackBerry device.
