Won't Connect To Netgear Router

Hi There
I recently bought an iMac 2.0Ghz 17". It's a beauty. However, I can't seem to connect to the internet through my router. The router is a Netgear DG834PN. I've tried the usual things with it - such as installing all software updates and updating the firmware on the router, but no luck. In addition, my previous 1.42Ghz Mac Mini didn't work either, however, a different Mac Mini in the house does seem to connect through the router. My iMac will connect through an ADSL modem so it has been connected to the internet. The Mac Mini that does work I do not believe has the most recent software. Are there any things I might have missed to resolve my problem? It won't connect via Ethernet or Airport, it simply doesn't recognise the network. I've tried adding the Mac Address to the router configuration as well as removing and putting back on Encryption. No luck. Help is greatly needed!
Thanks

Hi Jack Shepherd!
There was a post in another thread recently where a new owner during initial setup activated the wrong radio button in answer to the question "How do you connect to the Internet?" Was thereafter incapable of manually setting up a connection. Had success with the following:
If you open the Network panel of System Preferences, click on the "Assist me.." button followed by the blue "Assistant..." button, you'll open the Network Setup Assistant which will redo that initial setup and give you a second or third opportunity to make the proper selection for that question. Give it a chance and let us know how it works.
Forget the "Diagnostics..." button at this point, as that's an attempt to "edit" your way out of the mess, and it appears that what might be needed is a fresh start. Best of luck:)

  • MBP won't connect to Netgear router

I purchased a 17" MBP In October of 2009. It would not connect to our Netgear G router at home, so temporarily I used our neighbors'. Our network would show up in Airport, but it would have the little padlock next to it, and would ask me for a password (even though we do not have one set - all our other computers, all Windows, work fine without a password). Therefore it wouldn't let me on. If I recall correctly, it would let me just continue without a password, but it would time out.
I called Apple in November and they told me to reset my router completely, back to manufacturer settings. So I did, and it worked. Then an unrelated problem occurred with my MBP and I had to get it replaced. Brought the new one home, same thing happened. But I cannot get our router to reset like it did last time. Not only did my attempts to reset not allow my MBP to connect, but my dad's desktop couldn't connect either, and it's the one connected directly to the router.
Are there specific settings that the Mac prefers? I'm getting ticked that I can't use the internet in my own home. Our neighbors are our friends and we accidentally end up on each other's networks all the time, so they're not upset, but I'd rather use my own!

You marked this question as answered. In any case "working fine without a password" is poor thinking on your part. You should always password protect your network. Read your Netgear manual on resetting the router. If all else fails contact Netgear. It's their router.
A thought. In as much as you don't password protect your router did it occur to you that perhaps someone else accessed it a fiddled with the settings?

    HP PAvilion dv1000, Windows XP
Would like to print from laptop to printer at home.  Printer is ethernet connected to NetGear Router.
I had been able to print wirelessly from laptop to HP 7310 Officejet all-in-one, but now all I get is "document failed to print" message.  I can get documents to print on this printer using my smart phone, but not the laptop.
I have used "find printer" button on print screen and can see the printer to select.
    Any suggestions?

  • Can't connect to Netgear router with WPA enabled (MBP)

I just received a Macbook pro today, everything is wonderful except wireless networking. When it first started up, it detected my wireless network, showed me the SSID, and asked for a password. I entered the password, and it failed to connect. I decided to try later and did the rest of the install.
I connected via cabled ethernet and downloaded all of the updates. For a machine that shipped from the Apple store (custom config) a few days ago, I was surprised at having 13 LARGE updates to download. Grabbed them all, including a Firmware update which required two reboots. One for everything else, and another for the firmware.
I tried again from sysprefs, and asked for the diagnostics. It asks me for my WEP key, and there is no option for WPA. I tried entered the WPA key anyway, despite only three WEP options showing up, and it still fails.
Going through the Airport 'tab' and editing the connection, I get an option for WPA Personal, Enterprise, WPA 2 Personal, and WPA2 Enterprise as well.
I tried using WPA Personal and WPA 2 Personal and entering the key which works on other notebooks, still no joy.

Which Netgear router do you have? I use the Netgear
RangeMax WPN824 and works well with WPA enabled but I
think it may have failed to work the first time.
WGT624 v2. Works fine with other wireless devices from a number of vendors, and is detected by the Mac, but I can't connect. I don't want to disable WPA if I can help it, I have a number of other systems configured for it as is, plus guests that come to visit.
but some how I had to delete the connection,
let airport find it again and re-enter the password
to get it to work. One of those things I kind of did
in the process of troubleshooting and can't remember
exactly how it was I did it
I'll try that and see if it helps. Thanks for following up.
UPDATE: Sure enough, I deleted the network and added it back in by manually specifying the SSID and password, and it works now. No idea why, but there it is... thank you very much.

I'm using a asrock z87E-ITX with Broadcom 802.11ac wireless adapter, and windows 8.1
my wireless adapter won't connected to my zte f660 wireless router, but it's connected to any mobile phone thetered device. The problem is when i try to connect, the wireless adapter is automatically disabled and enable it self after it.
i've tried using an external wireless adapter (TP link) and it's connected normally.

    Hello padidisawah,
    What is your current situation?
Have you tried the solution as MVP S.Sengupta mentioned?
Please take the following steps for troubleshooting:
    1. Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\All Categories and run the Network Adapter Troubleshooter
    2. If the wireless adapter can normally connect to other Wireless router, please check the configuration in zte f660 wireless router.

  • My mac won't connect to the router.

I am very new to macs and recently bought a Macbook pro, I have connected to my router a D-Link, DSL-G604T but when I enable WEP security the mac won't connect only my PC's will. I am prompted by the mac to put in my Encryption key but it still doesn't work. I am able to to set the router to WPA-PSK but get stuck on the length of the string that I am supposed to put in? Will this set up work better?? Very stuck mac virgin, pleas help.

First, I strongly suggest that you use WPA or WPA2 instead of WEP for your wireless encryption...but if you must use WEP & work in a mixed (PC/Mac) environment...
Always use Hex characters for WEP encryption. Either 10 Hex characters (for 40-bit WEP) or 26 Hex characters (for 128-bit WEP)
If you use an ASCII password or passphrase, then use either 5 ASCII characters (for 40-bit WEP) or 13 ASCII characters (for 128-bit WEP)
Note: Because manufacturers may use different algorithms to translate between ASCII & Hex, that this doesn’t always work, and is one of the leading causes of issues with keys.

  • IPhone won't connect to my router, but will to my neighbours'!

I have an iPhone 3G with the latest software update installed, and a Netgear DG834N wireless router (latest firmware). The router has no security enabled except MAC filtering and a hidden SSID.
Until recently, the phone would connect to the router successfully. Its MAC address is still listed on the router panel. But suddenly it cannot see the router at all, even if it's right next to it. If I enter the network's name, the iPhone responds with 'network not found'. And yet it has no trouble connecting to my neighbours' wireless routers even two houses along the road.
I've tried the obvious things, like un-hiding the SSID and turning off MAC filtering, but it makes no difference.
I just don't get it: why would an iPhone 3G be unable to detect a router with no security which is in the same room? I have three Macs in the house which detect a strong signal from the router across three whole floors and into the garden!

Ok this is getting RIDICULOUS Apple... there is obviously a problem with the software/firmware... this WiFi issue is popping up on ALL iPhone old and new; heck some of these people just bought a phone 2 weeks ago and the WiFi has quit working.
I have spent the better part of a month surfing the discussion forums looking for a resolution to my iPhone WiFi woes, to no avail!! I have tried all the reasonable suggestions, nothing. I have tried all the crazy and moronic suggestions and still nothing. Every once in a while I can connect to my WiFi, but it only last a few seconds. I tried the restart, the static IP, a new router, no security, b, g, f and z :o) Seriously... this shat is broke and Apple needs to fix it.
I am a 20 year veteran of IT and network solutions, and with everything I have tried, I have not been able to resurrect my iPhone's WiFi. The bottom line is this... I purchased my iPhone on June 29th, 2007 and it has work flawlessly with any network, hot spots, at work, with security without, with mac address filitering and without and many other configuration... until iPhone OS 2.2.1, and now I and hundreds if not thousands of others can no longer connect to WiFi.
It surely does not seam like Apple reads or monitors these forums... but I will say this... we need to all STOP spending our time monkeying around with our wireless networks and instead start writing, calling and posting here asking if not telling Apple to fix this problem in the next firmware release.
I for one will be giving up on the iPhone if Apple does not fix this issue soon. The iPhone becomes basically like any other so-called smart phone without the WIFi... heck you cannot do half of the cool things on the iPhone without the WiFi feature.
Come'on Apple fix the iPhone WiFi.

  • Connect Modem, Netgear router and 2 airports

I have a modem and separate netgear wireless router supplied by comcast. Would like to set up a wireless network using 2 airport extreme base stations, each connected via ethernet to the router.
Is this possible? I assume that both airports would be in bridge mode, each connected via ethernet to the Netgear router and then the router connected to the modem?

    Welcome to the discussions!
+Would like to set up a wireless network using 2 airport extreme base stations, each connected via ethernet to the router.+
+Is this possible? I assume that both airports would be in bridge mode, each connected via ethernet to the Netgear router and then the router connected to the modem?+
Sure, it will work fine as you describe. You'll need to configure each AirPort Extreme to "create a wireless network" and setup security and a password for each device.
You have the option of configuring two separate wireless networks, or if you assign the exact same wireless network name, security and password to both AirPort Extremes, you will in effect create a large "extended" network.
This is called a "roaming" network because computers will automatically connect to the wireless access point with the strongest signal as they "roam" around the house. As in the above example, both AirPort Extremes would be configured in bridge mode in this type of setup.
Post back if you need any more details about this.

  • Macbook Pro won't connect to wifi router

My laptop won't connect to my wifi at home when I go into my room. The wireless router is on the other end of the house and I know you'll probably say it's out of range, but i've been in the same room for 2 years and i've never had problem connecting it until up to a couple of weeks ago. Nothing has changed in the set up of the house, it just randomly stopped connecting. Can anyone suggest what may be wrong??
    Thanks.

It could be that one of your neighbors has added a router that's basically overpowering yours. Try logging into the router and changing the wireless channel.

  • HELP! send but cant receive on new broadband connection via netgear router?

I have posted a recent question as I cant receive mail but I can send it both through outlook express on classic9 and mail. I have recently got tiscali broadband and a netgear router, I have a pc and emac connected through the router which can accommodate 10 computers. I have re-set the passwords and user ID/names so I think they all match (unless I have something hidden somewhere). I did not have any trouble on my NTL dial up connection with either mail or outlook. I noticed from one of the top guys on the forums he suggested-Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list......I would like to know if this means built-in-ethernet or tiscali, as I have it set on automatic....is this right or wrong?? Also there was something said about a router having a firewall, which I can access on the PC but have never seen it on the emac or set it up I dont think (maybe unknowingly), where would I find it if the emacs cable goes to the router. Tiscali do not support Apple Macs by the way, so they are more than reluctant to get involved either by e-mail or on the phone. I can access my mail if I go to the tiscali web site because I can connect to the internet with intenet explorer no problem. I really just want to find the problem so as I can receive my mail in either outlook or mail....please help.

    > I would like to know if this
    means built-in-ethernet or tiscali,
as I have it set on automatic....is this right or
    wrong??
I don’t understand the question. If you choose
    Network Port Configurations from the
Show popup menu in System Preferences >
Network, there is no such thing as an “automatic”
setting there, only the list of available port
    configurations (network interfaces)...
*In network preferences the 'network' box displays with 'Location'- which in mine there is a choice of 5 options, the chosen one is Automatic....is this correct?
where would I find it if the emacs cable goes to
    the router
I don’t understand this either. You can see where the
cable goes by looking at it. What do you mean?
*Yes I can see the cable, but is there an Icon floating around that I have not found which will give me the status of said router.?
Actually, what’s the problem exactly? Is it that Mail
doesn’t check for mail on this account, or that it
checks but retrieves nothing, or what?
*Yes it checks for mail, the spinning wheel goes round in the right hand corner then it displays a box:::: 'Enter password for Account G&L....The POP server "pop.tiscali.co.uk" rejected the password for user G&L....Please re-enter password or cancel, save as keychain
What type of mail account is this (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
*Mail type is PoP & Smtp
Could it be that Mail or this particular account is
in an “offline” state? Is the Mailbox > Go
    Online command enabled or disabled?
*I can send Mail without a problem, so I dont think this particular mailbox is offline, but If it is applicable I will check it anyway.
Go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced. Is
Include when automatically checking for new
    mail ON or OFF?
    *Again I will check this.
What’s the time interval chosen in Preferences >
General > Check for New Mail?
*I will check and let you know but I think it is all password box related for some reason as my password has not changed at all.
Open Window > Activity Viewer and tell Mail to
check for mail on this account. What do you see there?
*The Activity veiwer has a red octabon in the top right hand corner and a blue&white barbers pole in motion and the text says fetching new mail and sending password, then I get the box asking for password as its been rejected.
*I have configured as DHCP in the TCP/IP menu
There is no PPPoE connection box ticked ...is this wrong?
    built in Ethernet configures Automatically.
I hope you can help me as its driving me NUTS!!
    Thanks in hope.

  • Macbook will not wirelessly connect to Netgear router...

Hello, I've been trying to sort this problem out with my Netgear DG834GT router for ages now, but I don't seem to be getting anyway. I'm really not a tech whizz, I'd go as far to say I know nothing about computers or networking or anything, so I don't really want to do anything that will make the problem worse.
I'm currently having to use an ethernet cable, which is really annoying. Anyway, when searching wirelessly for available connections, my macbook find the netgear router, and asks me to put in the password, which I do, but it never connects. The weird thing is, if I have my ethernet cable plugged in, then unplug it, wireless works fine but only for a couple of minutes. Turning the mac on and not plugging the ethernet cable in, and any wireless connection is pretty much useless. All the other laptops (non-mac) in my house work fine wirelessly.
    Am I missing something?
    Cheers!

I've taken a look at your router's installation manual - hopefully this link will work (you can download it from this site):
    http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/list/kw/DG834GT/sno/1/search/1/session/L3NpZC8 zT1VKS2luaw%3D%3D
If the link does not work, simply go to Netgear support and type in your model number.
In any case, pay particular attention to No. 2 in the instructions. It states that your computer needs to be configured before it'll work with the router and shows how to do that.
(I know this from my (newer) Netgear - it does not like to recognize any device unless I've gone through similar steps).

  • Wifi connection with netgear router DG824M - one solution

I have had some problems with connecting iphone via wifi with my home router
    Netgear DG824M
I'm still having a problem with the encryption issue but have at least found one solution to another security issue and thought it might help others so i am posting:-
If you have mac address filtering turned on (netgear describes this as only "trusted PC's" can connect) , you may find that you get an IP Address clash when you try to connect your iphone (or some other apple equipment)
I found that this resolved if i selected an "reserved IP address" for the iphone - in my casei chose 192.168.0.10 (since the router allows up to .51)
(the phone otherwise took 192.168.0.3 which clashed with another device)
This was not an issue when "trusted pc's" feature was turned off on the router

Ok guys. This is the simple way i used to connect my iPhone to my Netgear router.
    1. In your iPhone, go to Settings>General>About. Then, scroll down to "Wi-Fi Address". This is your MAC address. This you will need in order to authorize your phone in your Netgear page (which usually looks something like XXX.XXX.X.X (where "X" are numbers)).
    2. Log in to you Netgear page.
    3. On the blue left panel of the screen, click on "Wireless Settings". A new page comes up.
    4. Click on "Setup Access List".
    5. Click on "Add" to enter the require info needed for your phone to gain access to your network.
    6. On "Device Name" I entered "iPhone". This name is irrelevant for i named my iPhone differently and using just "iPhone" worked. So enter whatever name you wish, but keep it simple.
    7. Now, on "Mac Address" (the single most important info here) enter the number you obtained in Step 1. Make sure you enter it with the colons (:).
    8. Add and apply, and wait for the blue bar at the top of the screen to do its thing. It will take only a few seconds to update the network.
    That's all! Connect and enjoy!
I hope this was helpful. Let me know if it worked at [email protected]

  • Boot Camp: Windows won't connect to AirPort router

I got the new AirPort router from Apple in March and since then it's been working perfectly with my Macs as well as on Windows using Boot Camp.
A few days ago, I switched my AirPort setting to be Wireless-N ONLY so I could see some speed improvement on my Mac. The next time I used Windows, it would not connect to the network, so I then went back to my AirPort settings and switched it back to 802.11 G and N compatible. But both my Windows computers still won't connect.
Please help me set up the correct options. Thanks.
