Won't connect to WEP secure router

I have a d-link xtreme n router. I just changed the password from WPA2 to WEP. Everything is fine with every other computer except for my sister's MacBook Pro. For some reason, it refuses to connect to the router if it is WEP protected. It worked fine with WPA2 and it's working without security. Can anyone help me with this?
Also the reason I changed the security was because certain things in my house are only WEP compatible. I would not like to change it back to WPA2.

I had the same problem with my MBP
Here's how I fixed it:
- I SKIPPED the network setup assistant.
- Instead, I used native system preferences, then clicked network.
- I clicked the + sign to add a network
- Typed in SSID of my home wireless network
- (IMPORTANT) in the field below, I was able to specify 128 bit WEP hex *** HOW COME I DIDN'T SEE THIS OPTION WHEN I USED THE NETWORK SETUP ASSISTANT? *
- applied the changes, and I'm on.
Sounds like the network setup assistant has some limitations?

  • Satellite A300 - won't connect to WPA secured network

Help please.... new Toshiba Satellite A300 - running XP professional with atheros AR9281 wireless network adapter (driver 7.6.0.200) won't connect to WAP secure networks, but seems to be fine with WEP and unsecured networks?
I can connect to my WAP secure network using LAN cable and also if I use an external Netgear wireless adapter, so the problem is definitely with this adapter or driver. I have update bios and tried updating driver, but no luck. Current driver is (I think) most up to date?
Would be grateful for your help.
    Thank you.

On the Toshiba website is a newer driver version available (7.6.1.149.1)
So I would try the new driver.

  • New iPad won't connect to Orange Liveboxs router...

New iPad 16gig wifi won't connect to Orange Livebox router...
I can see the router available as a choice in a list of wireless routers(presumably the neighbours' as well), I can select it, it changes from Gray to Black but then removes itself from the window...
I DO get a message about the 'base station', does this indicate a router issue?
I have a G5PPC imac working and a G4 powerbook and an iPhone all on this wireless connection - I can switch iPhone wifi on and off and the Livebox is readily found...
I also have access to a 10.6 macbook and it's network choice behaves in this fashion also - ethernet OK but no wireless....

I had the same problem. Unfortunately it seems that the Orange Live Box, which was previously the Wanadoo Live Box, is not compatible with a Mac. You can confirm this in the instructions for the Live Box. Completely rubbish and hopefully after mass buying of Apple products will convince Orange to upgrade their technology.
The solution that I use is to use a second router plugged in to the Live Box and connect to that instead. I can recommend the FONERA SIMPL from http://www.fon.com/en/product. I've now bought 2 as my parents also use the Orange Live Box at their house.
    Hope that helps.

  • My Ipod Touch won't connect to belkin 54g router with wep password 128 bit

Well basically, I try to connect to my router it is belkin 54g, I have a 128 bit password WEP security. When I put the password in correctly, it says that it's " Unable to connect ".
However, when I only put in the first 10 hex of my password it says connected, but when I go on facebook or safari it says " No Internet Connection".
Before you refer me to any solutions these are some of the things that I have tried but didn't work:
Putting a $ sign in front of the password
    Restarting my router
Turning off security and then put back on ( When i turned it off it connected but when I turned it back on it wudnt connect)
Changing it to WPA (still doesnt work)
I have noticed that on my router, it keeps blocking me from connecting to it. All of the comptuers can connect to my router as normal however, my ipod touch can't.
It's really annoying because you can't even do half of the things without being able to connect to internet.
    Please help me

are other things still connecting to the wifi without a problem?
Have you tried resetting network settings, then unplugging modem and router from power for 40 seconds then plugging back in letting the lights stabilize and Then recconecting with the ipod>?

  • Airport won't connect with WEP active

I have a Netgear router (the one Sky issue that everyone seems to have) and my Mac Mini refuses to connect to it when I enable WEP security, even when I select 'Other' from the Airport menu and input the WEP key.
I have to turn off WEP to be able to go online on my Mac. Is there a way to fix this?

You might try resetting your connection settings using the steps listed in this message:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=10695921&start=1
They're not guaranteed to solve the problem, but they'll only take a minute or so to try.

If there are any neighbors near enough to connect to your network, you could have trouble from them sharing your bandwidth or worse.

  • EA2500 won't connect to my EA3500 Router

I bought a new router today because my WRT54GL was giving me some fits. I purchased an EA3500 and I'm using an EA2500 adapter on the desktop since the router can't reach it via ethernet.  Some of my early troubles with this combo began with not being able to test upload bandwidth.  It would just time out and give an error via the built in Cisco (OOKLA) utitliy and through speedtest.net after which, the network would show no internet access and I'd have to reset the adapter.  After trying to troubleshoot that issue it grew into zero internet access for my desktop however my Nexus would have wifi access without issue.  If I'd startup in safe mode with networking I'd have net access shortly and then it would quit about 30 seconds after startup.  I've tried uninstalling all drivers for the wireless NIC and the Cisco Connect software while doing everything manually but nothing changes.  This PC simply won't gain internet access with the EA3500 or even allow me to access the router through the default gateway IP.  I've since put the WRT45GL back in place and I have access again with my EA2500 adapter.  I should note that with the EA3500 in place, if I disconnected from my wireless I couldnt see any networks until I unplugged the adapter and reinserted it into the USB port (i've also tried many different ports).  I've named the SSID's of the two routers differently, tried a manual setup of the wifi, tried the CD setup, the wifi protected setup, no security, and WPA2 to no avail.  I can't seem to get the EA2500 adapter and the EA3500 router to get along.  I'm running W7 x64 Pro.

Did you try making any changes on the router to fix the issue? If not, please try this. Launch Cisco Connect. Click on router settings and then click on 'advanced settings' and click ok.
This will open the router's web interface. Click on the wireless tab at the top. Then click on manual. After this, you will see the options for 5GHZ wireless settings and 2.4 GHZ. wireless settings. Change the 'network name' for both 5GHZ & 2.4GHZ settings. The network name shouldn't be identical. Change the channel only for 2.4GHZ settings to 11.
Now on your desktop, it would show you two different networks. Try connecting to 5GHZ network first, in case it doesn't connect, try 2.4GHZ network.

  • Ipod won't connect to my wireless router.

My ipod was working just fine at my mom's house using her wifi, but at my dad's house it won't freaking connect.
the modem is a ssid 2wire. I don't know the model, but it's WEP password protected. Yes I have the pssword.
The modem is using DHCP settings.
I go to settings, wifi, click on my network, type in the password but the lock is still there. is it supposed to be?
anyways, it says its joined, (hence the checkmark) but when I try using safari or youtube it says "cannot connect".
I've went through the network connections on my desktop, although its connected directly to the router through LAN, and it has a diiferent subnet mask.
    ipod subnet mask : 255.255.0.0
    desktop subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
I dont know if that makes any difference, but anayway I tried changing it to static and changing the subnet mask to the same thing. still no luck. I also tried making the IP's the same.
Do I need to fill in the client ID, DNS, and the search domains?
Also there was a DNS server IP on my desktop so I input that on my ipod but that only made it take longer to tell me that it couldn't connect.
I read the wifi section in the manuals but that was useless.
I'm kinda ****** off about it so if anyone can help me thanks.

Well this happens to me too. In my case, the router is set to allow only and only my sisters computer to connect. It`s a router from Belgacom. Now this is just a hunch ... but the symptoms are exactly the same here ... also you should try pressing "Renew Lease".

  • My HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 won't connect to my wireless router

This is bizarre.  I have had my HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 for about 6 months.  It has generally worked fine, and we have used it wirelessly only.  But now it refuses to connect to the router.  It can FIND the router, and it can find other networks in the area, but it won't connect to the router.  I ran the Wireless Network Test, and the results say:
Wireless On - Pass // Wireless Working - Pass //
Network Name (SSID) found - Pass //  Wireless Networks Detected - 9
Printer Settings Consistent with Wireless Router Settings - Pass / No Filtering - FAIL //
So it recommends solution as follows: "1 If MAC Address filtering is enabled, and you would like to keep it enabled, you must add the Mac address of your printer to the list of permitted devices for your router before continuing."
Except, guess what, I don't have MAC Address filtering enabled.  I wouldn't know how to do that, much less check for it.
Also, before today, this was never a problem.  HELP!
    Thanks....
If you are interested, here's more detail and background.
Before today, the only problem we have had is that frequently our Apple laptop (OS X 10.6) has trouble connecting to the printer.  This has been odd because the printer is connected to the network, and so is the laptop, but the laptop can't find the printer - it thinks the printer is "offline" (even though it's not).  Usually, if I wait a while, it will find the printer, and it will resolve itself work fine.  If not, we sometimes have found that it can fix itself if you restart the laptop -- restarting the printer does not make a difference.   In fact, I did exactly that today, and it resolved itself.  And I printed.  Fine, right?
But then I wanted to do more printing, and the problem of the laptop not finding the printer came up again, so I decided to really "get to the bottom of this."  I don't remember exactly what I did, but somehow I was persuaded by the online help, that the correct solution would be to go into my System Preferences / Print and Fax, and click on the "-", which de-installs the printer, with the idea of re-installing the printer.  But then when I tried to re-install the printer, it could not find the printer.  Ugh!  Wierdly, it found an 8600 Scanner, but not an 8600 printers.  After installing and de-installing the 8600 scanner a few times, I eventually deinstalled everything, and I decided to start from scratch.  I got my HP disk, and installed all the software again from the beginning (even though it was already there), and then it looked for my printer, but couldn't find it.  So then I got a USB cord, and plugged that in.
So, now I have a situation where I do have a working printer via the USB cord, but no wireless connection at all.  In particular, since the Office Jet Pro 8600 won't connect to the router, I don't know what else to do.  My Apple MacBook pro is 2 feet away from the printer, and it is connected to the router just fine (as is my blackberry), and I have never before had a problem connecting to the wireless router by the printer.
    Any suggestions?

There are two things that can trip the mac filtering test to fail:  actual MAC address filtering setup (sounds like this is not the case) and using wireless channel 6 or automatic for wireless channel in the wireless network settings (in the router).  Since it does show failed for MAC filtering and you do not use this option, try changing the wireless channel in the router to 1 or 11.  Those two channels provide the best compatibility with printers due to less interference.  Almost everything defaults to auto or 6 for the channel and this causes a lot of interference.  This change should not affect anything at all.  To do this, you may need to contact the router manufacturer as the process differs from router to router.
What brand and model is the router?
Has anything in the network settings changed at all?
What version is the Mac OS X?  There may be additional steps to take as it sounds like there are two separate issues involved and this could be revisited later.

  • IPad 2 can only connect to unsecured Wireless network.  It won't connect to my secured network at home or at work

Two days ago my ipad 2 with (wifi only) will not connect to my secured network even though it show's up as available with a strong signal.  It keeps rejecting my password.  I brought the Ipad to work and the same issue.  However I am able to connect to an unsecured wireless network with no issue.  Is this a network/router issue or an ipad issue?  If it's a network issue what is the fix? calling my internet provider to change router settings?

    - I've used the correct pw (it worked till 2 days ago)
    - I use road runner from Time warner, not sure of the mac address filtering
    -Security is WPA PSK.
I called road runner to request they remove my pw and see if i can access my wireless if that works which i believe it will then it has to be a security issue.  I'm using a 802.11n wifi access point, if that means anything.

  • Mac mini won't connect to my wireless router!

I just bought my mac mini server then connected it to wifi, then after 2 weeks I had to go abroad for a week so I just turned off the switch connecting to my mac, without switching off my mac mini server. then when I get back home my mac mini won't connect to my wifi. I tried everything from manually setting up IP and DHCP nothing works. What happened?
    thanks for help,
    Jakarta

I didn't reset the machine/router itself because 2 of my computer is still connected to wifi-and working perfectly, but the mac mini server cannot connect to wifi.
what I did was to set up the "networking utilities"-having said that, what I did was to connect all over again to wifi, this did not work. I did tried to change from DHCP to manually set up IP, neither of these didn't work.
    I'm now stucked!

  • Officejet 6500A plus won't connect to new wireless router

I recently purchased the Netgear R6250 Wireless Router.  My HP Officejet 6500A plus was able to connect to my old router, the Netgear WNDR3400, but it will not connect to my new router using the WPS feature, nor the Pin method.
I get "An error has occured" message when using the WPS, and an "Invalid Passphrase" with the manual input. I have verified the passphrase several times with the same result.
Is the issue with my new router (i.e. I need to make some sort of change to its settings that are not indicated in the manual) or is there an issue with the Printer (i.e. something special needs to be done to allow it to connect to this new router)

Yes, download the user guide here.

  • 1st Gen iPad won't connect to my home router. EVER. Refuses to connect to my wifi.

HELP ME PLEASE WITH THIS 1st GEN IPAD refusing to connect to Wi-Fi ISSUE
It shows up as having full signal, and shows the name of our network. But go to Safari and try to go do anything and it spins and spins then tells me "Cannot Open Page...Safari could not open the page because the server stopped responding."  Well...it never responded in the first place, so....
Apple says it works fine on their in-house system when we took it in. Told us to call Comcast. More than once, Comcast walked me through 20 mins of reconfiguring the router and the iPad and multiple phone calls and a trip to Comcast later...no go.They say it's Apple's problem now or that I have to buy a special Comcast technical support account for further help --- which doesn't guarantee anything....
This is rather BS to have this unusable thing for so long and now be expected to pay MORE money to get something like this working....and why won't anyone take responsibility? It cannot be that big a deal.
We now have been unable to use our expensive iPad for about 4 months or more. What the heck am I supposed to do? Throw it in the trash take the huge loss as a life lesson to not bother paying Apple prices for stuff that only works for a few months before some glitch or software issue makes it unusable without having to buy a new unit or pay someone to keep trying only to hear '...sorry, call someone else...'*
*Same thing happened with my perfecctly perfect dual G5 tower...motherboard burned out for no reason. Paid 1200 to replace that...then a year later the other main board fries...on a computer that barely ever got used...ended up having to literally give it away on Craigslist and buy a new iMac...which then made all my expensive music software and projects unusable. So I have about three years of special music project files sitting on a harddrive that will never be able to be used.
...I'm beyond frustrated since all we wanted the iPad for in the first place was to be able to check some websites and emails...help me help me.

If the iPad works on other Wi-Fi systems then I'd have to agree that it is your own router causing the problem. To be sure take your iPad to a Starbucks or your library and a few other places than have Wi-Fi and test it out. If it works in those locations you'll need to talk to Comcast some more and be assertive. Something could have failed in your router.
Regarding your hard disk full of music. Put it in an enclosure and connect it to your Mac. Other World Computing sells all sorts of hard drive enclosures that you can install your drive in.
Computers can be frustrating but solutions are sometimes just around the corner.

  • Airport card on ibook won't connect to D-Link router

    Greetings:
Just bought an airport card to put in my iBook. This replaces a MacSense Aeropad Mini (external wireless card) that has been hanging off the computer and working fine all over the house.
Although I get the iBook to see the airport card (filled-in icon in menu bar) and it tells me there's a signal, I can't get my browser to go to any sites ("Firefox can't find the server at....")
Router is a D-Link DI-514, connected to a Qwest DSL line. I've made sure the WEP hex password # is the same, and I THINK the "network name" is the same (when inputting it in the airport drop-down menu option.
Any ideas on what to do next? Ditch the D-Link and buy an airport base station that'll speak the same language?
    Thanks,
    Carlos Alden

    Okay, some progress:
After hours of googling and fussing with settings on the D-Link and Airport card, I discovered that this problem has a history with Apple/D-Link users, and one must set the "preamble length" in the router setup to "long." The default setting is "short."
Did that, and I was able to get through, but noticed that the signal range is very short, maybe 30 feet. Totally goes out in the other room. This never happened with the MacSense external card. I tried fooling around with the D-Link antennae and now have cut the signal altogether again and can't get back in.
I think it's time to buy an Airport base station, whatever the latest incarnation of it is. It's pretty frustrating know that there's probably some solution but it's buried deeply. Any ideas on how to get this operating more smoothly would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Carlos Alden

  • Galaxy S3 won't connect to DI-624 router

Just bought a new Samsung Galaxy S3 but when I got home found that it would not connect to my Verizon-provided home router (DI-624).  Signal strength is great; it sees the network and tries to connect, but always fails to get an IP address (DHCP is enabled) and then declares the network to be out of range.  However, it connected at the Verizon store and connects to my neighbor's network across the street (range about 100 feet).  Meanwhile, I have two laptops that connect to my network with no problem.
    Router: D-Link DI-624
    Hardware version: C3
    Firmware/Date: 2.50DDM / 09 Sep 2005
Everything in router set to default.
I tried to update the router firmware with version C firmware from D-Link and got a file incompatibility message.  Turns out that the "DDM" means that the firmware is some kind of verizon custom job which will only upgrade to new firmware from verizon, which I can't find.
Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a lot.

You need to go into the router, get to this page and then experiment with the Wireless Channels.  Verizon doesn't do firmware updates for that router.  In fact if you called verizon they would gladly give you a new actiontec router.  In most area's they are doing proactive router replacements.
Once on that page, change your wireless channel.  Try channel 1, 6 and 11 and your Galaxy s3 should connect on one of those channels.   Also make sure you are using the right SSID and Passphrase from the same page, and while there, you might as well bump it up to WPA PSK for increased security, but that last one is optional.
