Won't display messages in or out

i am on a 2.0 macbook running leopard 10.5.1 and whenever i type a message into my ichat messenger and hit return to send, i don't get the usual blip and display of my message. I have tested it with others and they are receiving my messages. Also they are telling me they are sending messages back, but they do not display in my window. Seems very strange, has anyone else run into this problem. I have restarted multiple times.

Hi,
By Default iChat uses port 5190 on the TCP Protocol to Login to the AIM servers.
It gets info back including some Text chats on port 5190 on the UDP protocol.
SOme modems and routers do not seem to like this use of the same port twice.
Go to iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server Settings tab
Whilst Logged out of AIM change the port to 443
Log back into AIM
Also consider deactivating "Animate Buddies" and/or stopping any AppleScript that "Scrolls" the Status Message.

  • Mail Won't Display Messages

Recently, starting May 18th, my mail shows it is receiving messages, but they won't display.  I can see them coming into the server, but nothing displays.  For example, when I send a test email from my Gmail account to my hosted email account, I can see the message coming in under the "Mail Activity" screen (lower left), but then nothing comes up.
I'm hosting my websites and using my iMac as a mail server.
I've been working on this for days, and nothing has worked.  Just to recap:
I've "Rebuilt" every email box multiple times
I've deleted the "Envelope Index" file, and allowed mail to re-import everything
I've deleted all the security certificates from the system, except for the website security certificates, and issued new certificates
I've tried using Firefox Thunderbird for an email client, and I get the same problem
    I've deleted all unnecessary emails
I can send email from outside accounts to my server, and it works just fine.  No errors, and I can see the message coming in just seconds later.
All email accounts connect and the "Connection Doctor" gives me green lights on everything.
This was a very sudden problem, and I did have 2 updates recently.  One for iTunes and one for the Thunderbolt controller.  Neither of which should have given me any mail issues.
So what would cause the messages to remain hidden?

The bottom line is, if your server is not properly setup for mail, it just won't work.  Obvious really, but the not so obvious is Apple syntax required for a proper server configuration.  Such as using "www.yourserver.com" as your FQDN.  Of course, this has never been an FQDN, "www" is a Microsoft sub-domain.
Hopefully, Apple will fix this in the future so it's not contrary to Internet industry standards.  Currently, this is very confusing and difficult to establish standards because the Apple environment doesn't see Internet domains the way they're established in the industry.

  • Mail opens, but won't display mail, quit grayed out

I can open Mail, indicates messages in the various locations (inbox, junk, other folders), but displays none of the messages. Also, "Quit Mail" and other choices are grayed out. Ideas?

I remembered the "Force Quit" option, that worked. Disregard, no other response necessary. Thanks.

  • How to open the server log file that displays messages of System.out.print

    Hi,
I am working on a j2ee project. How can we access the default log file? I have put many System.out.println(..) method in different classes in order to get the program flow and to track the origin of the error.
I opened the a log file named "defaultTrace.0.trc" in usr\sap\J2E\JC00\j2ee\cluster\server0\log installation directory. Although it shows the ecxeptions, It is not showing the messages that i have written to console with the help of System.out.println(..) method.
Can anybody tell me the location of the log file where i can find my messages sent through System.out.println(..) function?
    Regards,
    Sudheesh...

System.out.println goes to console, which is not a file... This whole thing is much easier if you use standard logging:

  • Mail won't display messages or close?

I bought this Macbook today (literally about 5 or six hours ago), brought it home, and used the migration assistant to bring my documents/preferences over to my new macbook from my old iBook G4, which was still running Tiger. Everything seems to be running alright, except that Mail is acting funny. I click on it and it opens, but the message viewer doesn't pop up. It doesn't come up until I go to Window > Message Viewer, and then it comes up as an empty inbox. I click the button to get mail and nothing happens. I checked the preferences and all my email account stuff is in there and correct. To top it off, when I try to quit, it refuses to - it just stays there until I force-quit it. I'm not really sure what to do and I didn't see any posts on Mail having this problem. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to fix this?

This post under Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard > Mail and Address Book
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1830441&tstart=25
eventually handled my same situation. Mine was a new MB Pro which would not display the mail after a migration from an older iBook.
The entry further down in the post from the original writer is what did the trick for me.
    Good Luck

  • Apple Mail won't display messages in HTML

I'm using Apple Mail on my laptop to check email from an account other than iCloud and Gmail.  I also use my iPhone and iPad to check mail from this same account.  Sometimes, newsletters are appearing in Apple Mail in plain text format, and not in HTML format.  What's unusual is that these same messages appear in HTML format on both my iPhone and iPad, so I'm guessing it's not a problem with my mail server, but with the Apple Mail application.  Are there any settings in Apple Mail to ensure I view all messages in HTML format?
    Thanks!

    Emily -
My wife is having the same problem with her new MacBook Air. She never saw the problem on the old first-gen Air running Snow Leopard.
    Here's what's going on:
The messages that are having the problem are encoded as multipart/alternative. That is, they contain this in the received message:
    MIME-Version: 1.0
    Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
              boundary="----=_Part_2836956_1545934347.1333570398993"
Downstream, you'll find that boundary string whenever a new "part" begins:
    ------=_Part_2836956_1545934347.1333570398993
    Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
This begins the first part...the plain text part. On down the stream, you'll find the part header again:
    ------=_Part_2836956_1545934347.1333570398993
    Content-Type: text/html; charset=utf-8
    Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.=
    w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
    <html>
That final <html> tag begins the bulk of the HTML code to render the graphical page. The block must end with a </html> tag to indicate the end of the block...but in this message the last line is:
    <td style=3D"color: #000000; text-decoration: none; font-size: 10px; font-f=
    amily: Arial,Helve
...and that's it. Obviously, the last word should have been "Helvetica" but ***the message was cut off***. I know this because if I open the message source window for the the same message in the gmail section (not the inbox section) the end of the message looks like this:
    </body>
    </html>
    ------=_Part_2836956_1545934347.1333570398993--
...which is what I'd expect in a multipart MIME encoded message.
The amount of data that's missing from the end appears to be about one network packet's worth. I suspect what's going on is that mail is erroneously discarding the final packet of some mail messages.
BTW, I've taken the computer to the Genius bar, and we took the time to create a new user account and a clean mailbox and duplicated the problem there in the store. The genius was unable to recommend a solution to the problem, and suggested that I perform a reinstall-in-place of the OS. Haven't done that yet, as I consider that pretty thin gruel from the perspective of fixing the problem.
In the meantime, I'm trying Sparrow mail as an alternative mail client. So far, I haven't seen the problem using Sparrow (nor, for that matter, on OSX Snow Leopard.)
Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I'll post back in this forum if I come up with a solution. I'll follow the thread...if anybody has any ideas what might be going on please post.

  • Messages won't display images, sandbox violation?

Can anyone help me figure out why, when I receive an iMessage that contains a photo or other image, Messages on Yosemite won't display the image? It appears to be a sandbox permissions issue, but I can't figure out how to resolve it.
Briefly, when I receive an iMessage that contains any image, the image displays just fine on my iOS devices, but in OS X Yosemite (10.10.1, build 14B25), it just shows up as a generic icon (attached at the bottom of this question). Clicking the icon or magnifying glass doesn't load it, double-clicking it doesn't load it, Quick View won't show it... nothing. If I look in /var/logs/system.log, any attempt to view it generates sandbox-related errors:
Messages[30820]: [Warning] Transfer: unable to create image for IMG_2758.JPG.jpeg
    kernel[0]: Sandbox: Messages(30820) deny file-read-data /private/var/folders/7l/cn4n4k4n4p31ncqq9qqk1klrydkmkm/T/IMG_2758.JPG.jpeg
If I manually open up that directory (/private/var/folders/7l/cn4n4k4n4p31ncqq9qqk1klrydkmkm/T/) I can see the image and open it myself, but Messages can't do it... and I can't for the life of me figure out how Messages's sandbox is configured and what is going on here.
This all happened when I upgraded to Yosemite; prior to Yosemite, everything worked fine. I've tried to blow away /private/var/folders/7l/ and let it get rebuilt, to no avail. I've also hunted for Messages's sandbox config file, to no avail.
    Help?
    Thanks in advance!
    Jason

    Hi,
    That does seem odd.
I mentioned the Containers things as this is the Read and Write route that the app uses (normally to the aliases in the /Data/Library/Preferences that pints to ~/library/Preferences)
I also looked in those places but for IDS, SOAgent and IMAgent that are also involved but no luck.
On your Console Location for the Var Stuff I have this
See Path Bar across bottom. This pic of Dec 1st I had to open in Preview.
A Different view if it helps
I am not sure what to suggest at this point.

  • I have a 5th gen that won't display any video out

I have a 5th gen that won't display any video out. I've tried 2 different splitter cables out of the earphone jack. I've tried plugging the RCA cables into different colors on the tv. Thought it was just a problem with the cables until tonight when I got a Sonic Impact V55. Video won't display on it either. I have the TV setting to ask. After it asks and I say yes, I get a picture of an Ipod cable connector and a message saying: TV OUT
    ENABLED Please Connect Video Accessory.
This message happens on both splitter cables and using the dock connection on the V55. I've restored, reset, nothing has helped.
I did see a couple of posts regarding the V55 and whether the 5th gen would work on it. Does anyone have a v55 that the ipods working with? Heck the box says it works with Ipod 5th gen.

It goes trough the place where you put youre dock conector in (on the bottom)
Yes it does, on the 5th generation (pre-Classic) models, the video does indeed feed out the headphone jack (as well as out the dock connector on the bottom).

My iPhone 4s won't display my contact names in my message, although the number is still linked to the correct contact in my phone book.
Recently updated with iOS 5.1.1, I've read elsewhere about a possible bug associated with the update?

    Hello, Sue.Darby.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I would recommend having your friend check to see if call and message blocking is enabled on their end.  Here is some information regarding that feature.

  • Mail Messages won't display on iphone 4

I have a .mac and a gmail account set up on my phone. I can see the messages in my inbox for all accounts but the individual emails won't display when I go to read them, the message portion of the email is blank. I can see the "from" an "to" and just the message is missing! Any thoughts?

Rebooting the phone seems to have solved this for the time being. I will let everyone know if it recurs.

Sprint iphone 4Gs will display only preview of email message. When I tap on the preview, it won't display the entire email message, only the preview. Previously worked fine, only recently started doing this.

I recently had a problem with messages too. Try hooking up to itunes and hitting the restore button. You will have to back up your settings again, but it worked to solve my problem. Hope that helps.

  • Messages app won't display any windows

My Messages app (v 7.0.1) intermittently won't display any windows, not even the Preferences. I've tried reloading the app from Time Machine, but it won't let me replace an the current version.
    I'm running a Mac Pro Quad-Core Intel Xeon 3.2 GHz under 10.8.5.
    Any ideas?

    HI,
The Time Machine version needs to be the same version as is used in OS X 10.8.5
This will be version 7.0.1 which came with the OS X 10.8.2 update.
the Process should be to go to Applications and find the Messages app.
Then use the Time Machine icon in the Dock.
This will reduce the window and display the galaxy in the background.
On the right are the arrows and dates for moving "back in time".
The window should also have become "stacked" with those older versions behind.
Changing the date should file through the stacked windows until the process finds a change to the Applications Folder.
If you went back until a change in Messages you probably got the wrong version (or a version that will not work with a later version of the OS).
    Try this:-
In any Finder window use the Go Menu whilst holding down the ALT key.
Select the Library that now appears in the Menu list
    Navigate to Preferences.
    Find com.apple.ichat.plist
Drag it to the Trash and restart the app.
This .plist holds the windowing Info for the app.
I am presuming you have tried the keystrokes seen in the Window Menu of Messages ?
however it also holds all the info about the Preferences except for the accounts.
This means any change you have made from the Defaults will be reset.
The Messages section on Fonts and Colours is the most commonly changed.
All the Alerts will be reset if you changed them.

  • How do I fix my messages if I sent a REALLY long message to someone and the messages just blacked out and won't open to show my conversations or anything?

I sent my friend a really long message of moons and spaces to **** her off for fun, and my messages froze, blacked out, and now they're blank and I can't click anything. I did it before on another day, and this never happened. Is this because the messages are still sending? Can I just backup and wipe my phone to fix it?
I need help ASAP I need my phone.

Sounds as though the messages app has crashed. Follow the below steps:
    1. Double tap the home button, locate the messages app in the screen that appears and swipe up to force close it (assuming you're running iOS 7 on your device).
    2. If the above doesn't work, then press and hold both the lock (on/off) switch and the home button at the same time, until the display turns blank, and the apple logo appears. Once the logo appears, release the buttons and wait for your device to power back on.
If neither of the above work, you may well need to complete a restore on your phone via iTunes.
