Won't display simplified Chinese

I just checked out an ebook written in simplified Chinese from an online library . The ADE displayed the title and the table of content correctly on the left pane, but the content of the book displayed on the right pane were not - just a bunch of special characters. Do I need to download a language pack to make it work? What do I need to do?  This is the first time I use th Adobe Digital Editions so I really don't know much about it.

I have the same problem. I got the book Niubi: The real Chinese you were never taught in School, by Eveline Chao. The Chinese caracteres doesn't appear, the Latin letters with diacrits also not. I noted that Adobe Digital Editions, doesn't have a proper place to fonts, in this case Unicode, would be apreciated. How can I solve the problem? Without this, there isn't any sense to have a software and a book which you can't read properly.
At Adobe PDF, when you open a book like this one, immediately the PDF upload a plugin for that specific language.  I also would like an aswer about this problem with Digital Editions. Thanks.

  • Pls help - Displaying Simplified Chinese characters

    Hi all,
I am using Servlet to generate HTML.
    When I use setContentType="charset=big5" and out.println(" . . . ."); with Big-5 Traditional Chinese characters, everything is fine.
    However, when I use setContentType="charset=gb2312" and out.println(" . . . ."); with GB2312 Simplified Chinese characters, everything is trash with some ??????.
The internet browser in both cases can correctly set to the appropriate character set, that is, in the 1st case it is big5 and in the 2nd case it is gb2312.
    Pls help

It should be because the font provided cannot handle the characters. Java only ever sprays question marks or rectangles at you if the font you're using is incapable of displaying what you're trying to show.
I'd imagine that the system's default font is capable of displaying Big5 Chinese characters quite happily if it's working on the page. The problem will come when you switch the encoding of the page and the characters within it. The same default font obviously can't display GBK stuff. So switching the font (probably through the use of <FONT face=""> tags) might do the trick.
    Hope that helps!

  • Newbie: Simplified Chinese characters are displayed as square boxes

    Hi,
I am using Windows XP Simplified Chinese Version SP3, Sun JDK5.0 Update 20. I want to run Apache Ofbiz POS; however, the Chinese characters (zh) in PosUiLabels.xml are all displayed as square boxes.
I have tested run Ofbiz in Mac OS X and the Simplified Chinese are displayed normally, and other languages can also be displayed in Windows XP.
    What should I do?
    Regards,
    Terence

When you say "displayed" I assume you mean displayed in some GUI component. In which case you should assign a font to that component which can render those characters properly.

  • Simplified Chinese displayed as boxes with numbers

Firefox used to be able to display Simplified and Traditional Chinese character pages perfectly when it's set at "Auto detect- Chinese". However, ever since I updated to 4.0b7, Simplified Chinese characters have all started to be displayed as boxes with little numbers in them.
Despite trying different encodings, such as GBK and GB18030, nothing is able to properly display Chinese simplified characters. I have IE as well, and it is able to display both S and T Chinese pages without a problem like Firefox before 4.0b7. I'm using English version of FF with 64bit Windows 7.

The boxes with little numbers mean that Firefox is now unable to find a font which supports the characters in question. (It's nothing to do with the character set detection.) This could either be because the fonts have been removed from your computer (unlikely, if IE can find them), or perhaps because the website has changed to ask for fonts you don't actually have, or perhaps it's serving different pages to different versions of Firefox. Were you on 4.0b6 before, or 3.6.x?

  • Traditional and Simplified Chinese characters couldn't be displayed!

    Hi all,
Recently I installed an Oracle 9i Database Server (9.0.1).
Problem regarding the globalization support issue was encountered after the installation of Oracle 9i Database Server. Parameters in NLS table had been checked that the language is initially set to AMERICAN, territory is set to AMERICA and the character set is UTF8.
Since traditional and simplified chinese characters must be required for the HK server, it is believed that the above parameters should be altered to TRADITIONAL CHINESE / SIMPLIFIED CHINESE, HONG KONG and ZHT16MSWIN950 / ZHS16CGB231280 respectively.
I tried to alter the NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS, but it’s not working; should the NLS_SESSION_PARAMETERS be changed instead? I also tried this one, changes is taken place but the chinese characters still couldn't be displayed, just bunches of &#20098;&#30908; (meaningless codes) instead.
Another piece of information is that the Oracle server is installed on the basis of Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition, should the Language for non-Unicode programs (which is in the “Advanced” page of the Regional and Language Settings) be configured to Chinese (HKSAR)? Various combinations, in terms of English (US), Chinese (HKSAR), Chinese (PRC), Chinese (Taiwan), had been taken turns to test for the results. However, same results happened.
Hence, how should we configure? Please advice us.
P.S.# It is known that this question should be placed in the "Globalization Support" forum, I have done that; however, it is hoped that I could seek more advice in here.
    Thx in advance.
    Karen

    Karen,
Setting up such an environment requires some sophistication and know how. I would advise reading though the Globalization Support Guide and som of the papers on the Globalization Home Page http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/globalization/index.html
before randomly attempting to change parameters. If your requirement is to store and retrieve both TRADITIONAL and SIMPLIFIED CHINESE then your database needs to be Unicode (UTF-8). Designing an application that allows you to easily access multilingual data requires careful design and planning. If you are simply trying to quickly display data you have in your database you might want to use iSQL*PLUS which is browser based and will allow you to display Unicode data. It might also be helpful to take a look at the following paper: http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/globalization/pdf/globalization-best-practices.PDF

  • Problem with display of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean business partner name

    Hi All,
I'm trying to understand how to get GTS to properly display the names of the business partners that are in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean.
I have set my SAP gui localization as follows:
    - Select the Customize Local Layout, then Options, then the |18N tab,
and check the Activate Multibyte Function box
    - Select the Customize Local Layout, then Character Set and check
    Unicode and Simplified Chinese
In the source R/3 system for these partners, if I set my localization to the right language, the business partner's name and address would be displayed correctly in the C/J/K character sets when I select the appropriate version in International Version of the address.
However, in GTS these names/addresses would just appear as nonsensical characters (like "·ÉÀûÆÖÕÕÃ÷µç×Ó£¨ÉϺ££©ÓÐÏÞ¹«Ë¾").
For example, if I do a look up of a known Chinese BP by number, in the seach results window the Description field of that BP would just be garbage, but if I put the cursor over the Description field, then the correct Chinese display (matching what is in R/3) would appear for as long as the cursor is over that field. This indicates that the data was transferred correctly from R/3 to GTS, but some how the display does not default to the right character set.
If I select that record, the resulting detailed display would also have garbage as the Name and Address. However, here putting the cursor over the fields still do not bring up the correct character displays, and I have found no way to get the correct displays to appear.
Does any one know of a way to get the displays to show correctly in GTS?
And can anyone explain why putting the cursor over the Description (in the BP search results window) would let the correct display pop up?
Greatly appreciate any insight anyone can provide.
    Thanks,
    Rex

Hi Rex - As per message - this looks to be an issue for BC-I18-UNI and not the GTS application:
For general information purposes - last response from BC-I18-UNI development via oss message:
"However, from readind the message, I believe I understood the reason for
the described effect. I assume GGT is a non-Unicode system? If yes, this
    is my idea:
The data stored in the BP tables, e.g. for number 2555442 have been
entred manually, probably within a session using English as logon
language. In this case the data are stored with a Latin-1 codepage. This
means the stored data are actually Latin-1 data, not Chinese. By
switching the font at front-end side to Chinese, the characters appear
as correct Chinese, although they are still Latin-1.
It is possible that different GUI components show different effects in
this context, as the internal font switching mechanisms behave a bit
different in different components, e.g. control based components are
    different from normal Dynpro-based fields.
To have correct Chinese data, you need to logon with language Chinese.
This holds for all non-Unicode systems. On Unicode systems, the logon
    language is arbitrary."

  • Unable to read Simplified Chinese in downloaded excel

    Hi,
We are running an MDMP Simplified Chinese SAP system.
After extracting some data with both English and Simplified Chinese and saving it as excel file, we are not able to view the Simplified Chinese characters when it is opened in MS Excel.  "Garbage" are being displayed in place of Simplified Chinese.  English display is ok.
The PC already has Simplified Chinese fonts installed (Control Panel->Regional & Language Options->Language tab->Install files for East Asian languages), and Windows XP is an English version.
In addition, we are able to key in Simplified Chinese via the keyboard using Hanyu Pinyin.
I am suspecting that the issue is with MS Excel which doesn't know how to convert the Simplified Chinese.
Does anyone know how to overcome this problem?
    Thanks

    Hi,
as far as I know you need to set the system locale (Language for Non-Unicode programs) of Windows in the control panel to Chinese.
In addition in a standard  MDMP system it is mandatory to logon with language Chinese if you want to download Kanji characters.
    Best regards,

  • Image with foreign characters in name won't display

I have an image on my drive whose name has foreign characters ("cpia de frente.jpg"). To display the image my JSP reads the image name from the database and generates the following html:
<img src="../pictures/cpia de frente.jpg">The page then displays a broken image icon for this image. Images in the same list which do not have foreign chars get displayed accurately. When I choose "show image.." in my browser I see that the image name has been rewritten into the following: c%C3%B3pia%20de%20frente.jpg. The rewriting that will display the image is instead c%F3pia%20de%20frente.jpg. I found the correct rewriting on another of my JSP where the image with the foreign chars actually gets displayed correctly although the code to generate the html is the same on both pages and looks something like this (simplified):
    <logic:iterate id="listelement" name="list" property="rows" scope="request" type="org.apache.commons.beanutils.DynaBean">
    <%
    out.write("<img src=\"../pictures/"+listelement.get("name").toString()+"\">");
                             %>  <br>
</logic:iterate> Every image that doesn't have foreign chars in its name gets displayed accurately but images with foreign chars in their names won't display. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks
    Niklas

Thanks, but it doesn't seem necessary to replace foreign characters. It works without replacing in one place but not in another which is confusing. I think it is something with the enconding but can't see what the difference is between the working and non-working code. In both pages I have put <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1">I'd greatly appreciate any more suggestions to solve this problem.

  • Simplified Chinese search in RH9 is partial, non-existent in RH8

I notice the adobe marketing literature states RH9 is fully searchable with simplified chinese character sets but my company's testing shows otherwise.  The search results do not pick up all keywords in the topics.  In fact, the search results are minimal to the reality of what is in the project.  I am not proficient in simplified chinese but my colleagues are and they assure me the feature is not usable for an online help delivery.  This is a let down for us because simplified chinese in RH8 did not yield any search results at all in RH8.  RH9 is a step forward but not god enough for delivery of a professional product.
Another bug report to adobe is forthcoming.  Please advsie if you have similar or contrary experiences.  This is not a browser issue whatsoever so that argument won't qualify to address the problem.

  • MS Notepad unable to display the Chinese characters I type and display them as squares

MS Notepad is unable to display the Chinese characters I type and display them as squares. But when I copy those squares on notepad to Wordpad or MS Word, they display the Chinese characters just fine. I've no idea why those Chinese characters I type can't display properly on notepad. I check the font of the notepad and it's the default. I've another Windows Vista desktop computer which has notepad of the similar setting and display Chinese characters just fine. Both are using Chinese (Simplified) - Microsoft Pinyin New Experience Input Style to input those characters. But I don't understand why my Windows 7 is facing this problem.

    Hi,
Notepad is a very simple text editor BUT it will work if you use the SAME language in Windows. Please try:
    1. go to control panel, click "Clock, Language, and Region"
    2. click "Change location" under the "Region" section
    3. go to the "administrative" tab, then click "change system locale...", then select "Chinese".

  • Cannot read simplified Chinese

    Dear all,
I have problem in reading a simplified Chinese PDF file. Some characters can't be displayed in Adobe Reader 9.3.2 (in Win XP SP3 English version). I try to copy and paste the content to a Word document, the character can be display.
I already install the Chinese Simplified Fonts Support for Adobe Reader 9, but it doesn't help. Any suggestion?

"When I try to open a Chinese PDF, I get a message saying, "The Simplified Chinese Language Support Package is required to display this page properly." It then offers to install it, and I click "OK". Then it goes through the installation process."
I have the same problem, but I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit.  I have Adobe Acrobat Standard 9.3.2 installed.  After installation, it reboots my computer, but the same error comes up.  After doing this twice, I tried using Control Panel/Programs and Features to Modify the installation and add Simplified Chinese Language Support.  That process also completed succssfully (i.e. no error messages) but even after rebooting again, and re-entering control panel, it showed that the support had not been installed.  When opening the same document the same message was displayed.
It is clear that Acrobat 9.3.2 has an issue across a number of Windows platforms.  Will soneone (anyone?) from Adobe acknowledge this issue?

    Hi,
Does anyone know how to insert simplified Chinese characters in the headings of an iGrid applet.
    Thanks,
    Ahmed

    Thanks Sam,
However the iGrid editor does not take in Chinese characters. When I pasted the Chinese characters in the headings fields of the layout pane of the iGrid editor they came out as little boxes. Even after saving the template and viewing it in IE they still came out as little boxes.
I opened up the saved template's XML file in a unicode editor pasted the Chinese characters for the headers then changed the font from the default Dialog to SimSun. SimSun is not one of the fonts available in the dropdown list of fonts in the iGrid editor. I then saved the XML file and re-viewed in IE and the Chinese characters displayed properly.
