Won't even boot from CD?

Hi,
I've got a G4 MMD powermac, and recently is decided to stop booting up. I get a boot beep and it will go to the gray apple screen, but I never get that little grey spinning wheel thing under the Apple. It just sits there forever.
After reading some forums, I found that this may be a problem w/ my hard disk, so I wanted to run Disk Utility to check it. But when I go to boot from the Install CD, (holding down "c" during boot), it goes to the grey Apple screen, the wheel starts spinning, and I can hear the optical drive spinning and accessing the disk... however it just sit there and does that forever. Thinking that maybe it was just slow, I left it for several hours to see what would happen, and it just sits there w/ the infinite spinning wheel...
Anyone seen this before? I'm wondering if it is not a HD problem now... maybe something w/ the on-board IDE controller?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi
You can connect your Mac to another one via FW and then holding down "T" at startup set it in target mode, and then check your hd from the other Mac.
Or remove the suspect hd and connect it to another Mac, on the internal IDE
or via an external enclosure (FW or USB)
If you remove your hd try to boot without, only from your CD/DVD drive

  • Can only boot into Windows 7. Can't even boot from Snow Leopard DVD.

I have no idea what prompted this. I don't recall installing any OS updates recently, other than some Windows Live apps in Windows 7.
I have an early 2009 Mac Mini with Snow Leopard, and have Windows 7 64-bit installed in a Boot Camp partition. When I installed Windows 7, I couldn't get the Boot Camp utility to install within Windows (I guess because it's 64-bit) so to switch back and forth between OSes, I just shut down the Mac and restart it with the Option key pressed, and select Mac OS X when I want to return to Mac. This has worked for about a month and a half now (ever since I got Windows 7). Suddenly I have problems.
I first had problems booting into Windows or Mac. I got to the grey screen with the Apple logo, with that spinning "progress" thing going for a while, then it would freeze up and get stuck on the grey screen with the Apple logo. I zapped the PRAM. No help. Then, after disconnecting all external drives (I have several) and extra USB devices, I was able to boot from the DVD install disk and reinstall Snow Leopard on my internal drive. Joy, or so I thought. Then I booted into Windows 7, and after some weirdness getting it to start, it did successfully start and ran just peachy.
Then I turned off the Mac and held down the option key (as usual) to return to Mac OS. But now all that happens is that I get a grey screen for a few seconds, then the Mac boots back into Windows 7, which seems to work fine. (I'm in Windows 7 right now.) I turned on one my external drives (Snow Leopard installed, connected via Firewire 800) in hopes that the Mac would boot into that, but same thing. Ignored and back to Windows 7.
Then I thought I'd boot from the install DVD again by putting it in the drive and holding down the C key as I restart, but the same thing--a grey screen for a few seconds, and then booting right into Windows 7. I can't seem to escape Windows 7! It's a bit disturbing when it won't even recognize the install DVD.
I tried to call Apple Care since I'm within my 90 day support window, but of course they are closed. I'm figuring that I'm going to have to take this into an Apple Store, but thought I'd see if anyone has any ideas. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

According to Apple, Win 7 64bit is supported with Bootcamp 3.0. If bootcamp 3.0 is available; I could not find it anywhere on Apple's website. It appears the most recent version is 2.2. The only place I could find 3.0 is not on Apples website and it's a questionable source so I won't post it here.
It may just be a matter of time before Apple makes it available. I'm not suggesting you wait, however if the install disk can't be used, I'm not too sure where u could go from there. Calling Applecare might work.
If you do a simple google search using the terms 'download bootcamp drivers windows 7' u will see what I was referring too.
Here's what I found from Apple (It doesn't specifically mention 64bit however just win7): http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3920
This is not from Apple, but specifically addresses whether they support win7 64bit: http://www.macnn.com/articles/09/08/31/boot.camp.win.7.64.support/
Here is more info about bootcamp 3.0 and win7: http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/

  • P55-GD65 registers only half of memory (now won't even boot)

    Hi
i have big problem with deployment of new system. Specs :
    MSI P55-GD65
    Patriot Sector 5 PGV34G1600ELK 2X2GB
    Intel i7 860
    CHIEFTEC 500W
NV 7900 gs (connected for diagnostic reasons)
First, BIOS recognized only half amount of RAM (2gb from 4gb)
-updated BIOS to 1.5 - nothing changed
-cleared CMOS and restored defaults - nothing changed
Second, i tried to instal win7/win2008r2 - freezes after installation booting progress bar disappears (tried to boot from USB key and from network deployment server)
Then, i tried to install win2003 - success! but system works unstable (eg once frozen at cinebench multicore test, once BSOD while booting etc)
CPU-Z recognized properly amount of installed RAM (and said that dual channel is disabled), but system still says that is only 2 gigs of ram.
Then, i found on this board that CPU bented pins could cause the problem, so i checked pins, and they seems to look fine (Hi res photo of pins)
After i mounted CPU back, the system event won't boot - all six CPU phase diods on main board are active, fans turns on, but boot process won't start.
Anyone know is there any way to fix it? (before i give back everything to vendor)

i just bought my MSI P55-GD80 yesterday. i just hope i wont be getting the same issue as some other guys do.
im planning on building my new rig tomorrow because i dont have my memory cards and video card yet(might get these items tomorrow).
so yeah, i will be checking the CPU seating. will try to seat it once then remove it for the pin contacts checking. and i hope too that the mobo i got has at least the 1.4 BIOS version, because to tell the truth i never done any BIOS flashing before(actually ive done it once with my XPS 630i rig and it went easy for me to do. i dont know whats the procedure for the MSI boards so no idea at all). and to tell the truth, this is my first time building my own rig so im a bit excited and i prioritize durability(long lasting) and always hoping not to get any problem building my very own rig for the first time.
**so here is my question :
how will i know if the CPU pad doesnt have a good contact with the socket pins?
what should i do if after checking i find out that my CPU pad doesnt have a good contact with the socket pins?
what if after checking i find out my CPU doesnt have good contact with the socket pins but with my GD80 reading 4gb of my memory cards?
if you wanna know where i got my board, i bought it here in japan from a known computer parts retailer. and yes im living here for now and its really hard for me to return my product if its faulty because, first im not that good at speaking japanese language, and second they might have different procedure for returning products that i might not know.
thanks in advance, will appreciate any help and reply,
    Skaahr
***edited : i just checked the sticker from my mobo which i read from the other topic that tells it shows the BIOS version in your mobo, the tiny green sticker shows me this " IMS140 " does it means i have the 1.4 BIOS version?

  • Can't even boot from install disc

I appear to have a dead hard drive but was hoping to at least boot up from my Snow Leopard installation DVD to check the internal drive. However, this doesn't appear possible. I've held down the option key at startup to see the list of bootable drives but am presented with nothing. (although I can hear the DVD spin)
Curiously, I tried sticking in a hard drive that I know is ok and WAS able to boot from the DVD!
So why would I not be able to boot from DVD with the other faulty hard drive?

I've heard tell of hard drives that were so badly damaged that they prevented the machine from booting at all. I've never seen it myself and have only rarely heard mention of it, but I believe it can happen. Don't ask me why, though.

  • MSI 975x won't even boot to BIOS

I had what I believe was a power supply failure.  Everything smelled burned when I came into my office in the morning.  No power came on so I deduced that the power supply had fried.  I replaced the power supply and now I get power to everything but I can't get even boot to the bios.
The status indicator lights show #1,3,4 lights-red with #2 light-green.  The manual states Memory Detection Test.  I have tried re-seating and replacing all the memory on the board.  I have even tried using only one stick of memory in every DIMM slot. Nothing has worked.  The computer comes on, stays on for 40 seconds, shows the 3 red lights above, , goes off for 3-4seconds and comes back on.  Then, 40 seconds later back off and the cycle continues.  This has to be indicative of something that someone knows about and has experienced.
Help, it has to be something more than Memory Detection Test.
    Any ideas?

Please >>CMOS Guide<< and see if that changes anything.
It often happens that a power supply failure damages other system components (due to excessive voltage fluctuation/spikes).  In case a CMOS Clear does not change anything, please try to test every component (including CPU, memory modules, video card etc.) in another system to find out if these parts are still working properly.
Also check the board for visible signs of damage (blown capacitors and burn marks).

  • After upgrading iOS5, my apps were deleted. Truing get them back, and only partially, the other apps, apple store is changing me again. Tried to restore and and sent an error. Now the Ipad won´t even boot. Can anyone help, besides Apple?

The iOS5 erased all my apps. Went to get them back and only part of it was recognized by Apple store. The others the store prompts to pay. I tried to go back to the old system and restore but as it was in sync an error ocurred and now I don´t have even the operating system. It won´t rebbot. I am afraid it will not stop searching the booting system until batery is dead and it will take many hours.
Any chance somenone ran into the same problem that could help?

The only people who can possibly assist you with this is Apple Customer Relations, call your local Apple contact number and ask for Customer Relations then explain your situation clearly and politely (be firm but don't rant).
You might want to investiage what the local laws are regarding defective goods and 'fit for use' definitions on warranties etc. Consumer Protection can be a useful tool to use or bargain with if needed ...

  • QuickCluster keeps vanishing with Compressor 4 and none of the solutions work, even booting from a clean system disk

I have a 2009 8-core MacPro with 16gb of RAM. QuickCluster started to disappear about three months ago. Apple support suggested that I log in as a new user and that worked for a while but the QuickCluster disappeared again. I decided to create a new system boot disk with nothing but 10.7.3 and FCPX and Compressor on it, nothing from my previous user settings. That worked for about two weeks and then the QuickCluster disappear as well. I updated Compressor last week and remarkably the QuickCluster returned....until today. Now I am back to using Adobe Media Encoder for fast encodes and I am not happy. Sure it's fast but Compressor is a much better program.
Before you suggest it: I have used Compressor remover, and Compressor fix from Digital Rebellion - no change. I have trashed library files according to Apple's support pages - no change. Permission repair - nothing. There must be something that is not in the typical pathways that Qmaster uses that is getting corrupted. Any suggestions?

Thanks for helping. A screen shot of something that isn't there might not be helpful. Let me see if I can describe the problem better.
Upon opening the Qmaster menu, I have the option to enable QuickCluster which I can do. Then the oddities start: first I get a system administrator password window which never happened before. I am logged in as an administrator and QuickCluster before always just enabled. I enter my password and close the Qmaster window however when I submit a batch, the QuickCluster option isn't there. Sometimes the computer isn't there either! (When that happens I have to trash the Qmaster library files or no rendering at all.) When closing Compressor, the system password window comes up again and if I don't enter it Compressor will not quit. Upon reopening Compressor, after the window asking if I want to enable shared services is clicked yes, the system password window comes up. If I cancel it then the QuickCluster is not enabled and Compressor behaves normally without any more requests for the system password. If I enter the password, the QuickCluster doesn't appear in the submit window and there's a chance the computer won't either.
This has occured the same way when the computer is booted off my normal system drive or the clean system boot disk that has none of my personalizations.

  • I'm having two problems: a) the browser won't load unless I go through profile manager and at time it won't even load from there and b) the search bar won't search it does nothing as does some links like your link to live chat

This has only started happening after my last firefox update. I tried a reinstall as well with no luck

Wow that was really quick, thank you so much.  Im not sure at all which version it was because i said it was around 4 years ago he bought it.  I know it isn't under his username, since he's a PC person (ugh) so i know its probably registered to one of our actual names.  isn't there some way to look it up since we did register it, because I'm not even sure where the disks are from when we bought it (we've moved a lot and also have two storage lockers, i know i would have kept it with other disks) but my cd rom drive is actually broken on my computer as well ( i think it got stepped on and is now squished and won't eject or run disks.)
So is there anyway they can look up that its registered to one of our names since we did register it when we bought and installed it, or do i really have to find the disk with some sort of proof of purchase (i know there would be no receipt after all this time)
either way, ill do what you suggested to the best of my abilities and thank you so much for answering my questions, i can't even open the program as its incompatible and find out the info from that) so I'm in a bit of a pickle and your response was so thorough and it didn't seem to be posted long enough to even write a well researched response, thanks, all the best,

  • Won't boot from dvd

So my PB 15 won't boot. It gets to the Gray apple screen, hangs up, then gives me a blue screen with a mouse arrow. I tried to boot with the dvd-hold down the c key. No luck, it won't boot from the dvd. I tried to choose a startup disk manually (hold down option key) but I get e screen with a lock and a password box. When I type in my PW-I get nothing.
I am a little feaked-I ned to pull te data down to another machine if I can't get it to boot, but it won't even boot from the dvd.
    any ideas? I'm pretty desperate.

The open firmware password can be reset reset and changed by any administrator user, as designated in the Accounts preferences, via physical access to the inside of the computer, or when the computer is started up in Mac OS 9.
    Follow these steps:
    1. Open the Open Firmware Password application. Note, For Mac OS X v10.4.x, you must use the updated version that can be copied from the software installation disc (located at /Applications/Utilities/ on the disc).
    2. Click the icon to authenticate. Enter an administrator username and password when prompted.
    3. Click Change.
    4. Click to select the checkbox for "Require password to change Open Firmware settings".
    5. Type your password in the Password and Verify fields.
    6. Click OK. A confirmation appears.
    7. Click lock icon to prevent further changes.
    8. Choose Quit from the application menu.

  • Rev. A iMac Won't Boot From CD

Ok, this has stumped me. My brother gave me an old Rev. A iMac (233mhz, 128mb RAM), and I wanted to outfit it so my kid could play CD games and surf the 'Net (he's only 3, so we're not talking hard to please here).
Anyway, I bought a brand new 40GB Seagate 7200 ATA drive to replace the original 4GB drive so that I could install Panther for the stability. I installed it today, then popped in the OSX installation Disk 1, and it wouldn't boot. Got the flashing question mark/folder.
So I figured I might have to boot with the old OS, so I popped in the copy of 9.0 that came with my G3 Blueberry, and that started to boot (happy Mac appeared), but a few seconds later I got a popup that said, "A Fatal Error Has Occurred." My only option was to restart.
I've been looking for a while at issues already discussed that are sort of related to this, but nothing exactly with that error. I suspect it's a firmware problem, but if it won't even boot off the 9.2 CD, how can I update it?
Furthermore, the drive was right out of the baggie brand new. I assumed that even though it was completely blank, I could still boot up with an install CD and initialize the disk, get the firmware on there and install a system.
Now I'm thinking from what I've read in other threads that in order for success to be achieved, I'm going to have to boot up and install from the original OS8.1 CD that came with the machine, then incrementally upgrade the from there.
Any help would be kindly appreciated. The fatal error message and the inability to boot from a system CD scares me.
    iMac G3 533mhz 256M/120G   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

OS X needs to be on the first partition, OS 9 can be on the second. I think you have to have an installed an OS on the first partition so the boot blocks are set. I believe also that you have to have 8.5 or higher to do the OS X installation. The process on my PowerBook G3 Wallstreet was to install 9.2 first and then OS X following the guide in the Read Me on the install disk. I already had 9.1 on it at the time.
I remember it was a pain. I had to take it to work, back up the hard drive, partition and install. At the time it was 10.0 and ran so treacle slow. 10.1 fixed that, and it still has 10.1.5 on it running fine.
Also, the disk format has to be HFS+, not HFS. If you have an external drive, then you could install and do your upgrades on that until you can install on the internal.
There is also an iMac Firmware updater you will need to run available from Apple.com.

  • Intel Xserve won't boot from 3rd party drive in ADM

Right, I've got a Late 2006 Xserve Dual 2.66 with the normal non-RAID SAS/SATA board, which has been running fine for 2 years with a pair of non-Apple Seagate Barracuda ES 250GB drives (Bay 1 & 2), and an original 80GB ADM in Bay 3 as a spare boot disk.
Bay 1 & 2 are set up using SoftRAID and are partitioned into a boot volume (30GB) and a data volume (200GB), both RAID 1 mirrors. The boot volume is cloned nightly to Bay 3 (single volume, set up using Disk Utility). Data is backed up to a utility machine, so this is arrangement lets me handle any single drive failing.
This arrangement has worked fine for 2 years, and allows me to remotely boot off Bay 3 and run DiskWarrior or other disk maintenance software on the normal boot drive without having to drive across town with a firewire drive. I originally started with Mac OS X Server 10.4, but I'm now on Mac OS X Server 10.6.4.
Where things have come unravelled is, I need to upgrade the two 250GBs to something larger. I didn't realise that the Intel Xserve is pretty fussy with ADM sleds and the model of SATA drive they will work with. I didn't have any issues when I set up the Barracuda ES 250GB so wasn't expecting any problems this time.
I bought a pair of Seagate Constellation ES 500GB drives (well 3 actually, one to keep on the shelf as a spare).
I installed them in the sleds and inserted them in the Xserve. The green power LEDs came on but the drives weren't recognised in Disk Utility or System Profiler. I then added the jumper to set them to 1.5Gb/s and then they mounted. I went through my normal process of cloning the OS to them from a standard disk image I have of a known working OS install, ran Disk Utility to repair disk & repair permissions, Disk Warrior to check everything else (my standard paranoid procedures). Set the startup disk to the new install and rebooted. No joy, just the flashing question mark folder. Reboot with the option key, and the new volume doesn't appear in the list of available boot options.
I installed the drives in a firewire enclosure, and it booted without any problems, so it's not a corrupt install, it's something to do with the ADM sleds.
So to go back to basics, I tried initialising a single drive as a single volume and installed 10.6.4 server fresh from the DVD. Same result, no boot when in installed in ADM sled, boots fine in firewire case.
Erased drive, changed formatting to APM (rather then GPT), cloned OS, etc. Won't boot when in ADM sled, boots fine from firewire case. So that screws the theory that drives have to be GPT to boot on Intel hardware.
So I ordered a set of WD RE3 500GB drives (x 3) and repeated this whole process. Same deal, boots fine in firewire, won't boot when installed in ADM. GPT vs APM doesn't make any difference.
Try #3. Ordered desktop variants rather than server class drives. So armed with a pair of WD Caviar Black 500GB. Same deal, boot fine from firewire, will not boot when installed in ADM. Also required jumpers for 1.5GB/s and also the undocumented pins 7&8 (apparently this might be related to the new Advanced Format they are using)
    Try #4
A pair of Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 500GB. This is where it gets tricky. One of the Barracuda will boot the Xserve when installed in an ADM, and one will not. So 2 Barracuda 7200.12, both same model number (ST3500418AS), both same firmware (CC38), yet they behave differently.
    Try #5
    Barracuda ES.2 250GB (x 3). Won't boot in ADM, will boot firewire.
    Try #6
    WD Caviar SE16 250GB (WD2500KS)
Boots in ADM (Yay!!) and firewire
    Try #7
    WD Caviar SE16 500GB x 2 (WD5000AAKS)
    Boots in ADM and firewire
I've managed to get access to G5 Xserve (2.3DP) so I've repeated all this testing on it as well. The G5 doesn't care about the model of drive and boots from any of them using a 10.5.6 install with APM formatted drives.
I've tried all these drives in 4 different models of ADM sled. One thing I have determined is that the model of sled determines if you need to use the 1.5GB/s jumper. I have 2 sleds from G5's, they require the jumper, a 80GB Intel ADM sled with separate data and power plugs requires the jumper, and an Intel 160GB ADM sled with the ribbon cable and combined data/power plug doesn't require the 1.5GB/s jumper. APM vs GPT formatting again makes no difference.
So on the Intel machine, the drives work in the sleds, appear as normal drives on desktop or in Disk Utility when logged in, and also appear as normal drives when connected via SSH if Auto Login is disabled. So to me they appear to be working drives.
It appears to me that something changed at a low level between the Barracuda ES and ES.2 generations of drives (for WD drives as well since the Caviar SE16 that boots is a similar age to the Barracuda ES)
So then why won't it boot from them? Is there some magic dance I've missed?
And how come one of the 7200.12 will boot, while another identical model won't?
Any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated.

I don't have an answer for you, but you deserve thanks for all the useful hardware information you posted from your trial-and-error testing.
My impression has that the XServes need specific kinds of firmware and hardware monitors on their drives in order for everything to function smoothly. My own efforts swapping drives in ADMs has produced "mixed results" to put it mildly. It would be so much easier if we knew what kinds of drives worked properly in what kinds of ADMs and on which Macs/XServes.

  • First gen. Mac Mini - won't boot from DVD/CD, or into any safe modes

    Hi All!
Last Sunday my Mini seemed to start hanging up, then all of a sudden it was spinning beach ball time. Everything pointed to a hard drive issue, including Disk Warrior, which couldn't replace the directory due to some kind of disk issue (I've forgotten). Was able to get into safe boot mode, tried fsck -y:
    +disk 0s3: I/O error+
    +Invalid Key length (4,25910)+
    +**volume check failed+
    +/dev/rdisk 0s3 (hfs) exited with signal 8+
Soon after that I couldn't even get into safe boot mode. Yesterday we replaced the hard drive, but now I can't even boot from the Leopard install disk, or even eject it so I can try booting from the Panther install disk. It's as if it's no longer recognizing the keyboard. I can't boot from the CD/DVD by holding down the "C" key, nor can I boot using the shift key. All paths lead to the flashing question mark/mac face folder...
What else can I try? Could this be a power supply issue?
There is nothing else hooked up to it at present, other than the keyboard and the monitor.
I do have a LaCie mini back-up drive with Panther installed available, if that's any use.
    TIA
    Rose

    Just for the records:
the Apple A1243 aluminium USB keyboard is not available at start up time (in connection with Mini 1,1 OS X 10.6.4, 1GB, late 2006)
I did not get the start screen to login, system hung with frozen wheel - so I was glad to have Boece's advice to use the IR remote for changing to the OS X DVD for startup (remember, no key worked on the keyboard). Nevertheless, Disk First Aid from the DVD have shown no problems with either disk nor allowances - but I have not been able to start from the the mini's disk.
Then tried the usual hints from Apple's documentation - to no avail.
After that I tried to restore from my actual TM backup, which used up some time (it's working rather slow, isn't it?), but then I got hung at the BSD's screen asking me to shut off an restart - another loop.
I guess that the iTunes update (9.2.1) is the culprit, as the last Safari update (5.0.1) is working OK.
At last, I made an erase & install - which worked (I am no in the duty of installing all updates again) so far. Let's see ...

  • MBP13 - first lock-ups, now not even booting anymore

    hi everyone,
after last weeks itunes update (could be coincidence) i have experienced some lock-ups when using my mbp. first for only a few seconds, but they grew longer and longer to the point, where it was unusable.
now it won't even boot. i get the startup sound, then the white apple screen for 30 mins. and then the light blue screen for about 4hrs (i shut it off after that).
does anyone else have this problem? any help is appreciated.
oh, running on 10.6.1 with all the latest updates installed.
    thanks
    frank

    thanks for the reply.
i've tried the disc repair. failed.
it couldn't repair the drive in three tries and suggested to back up my data (which i can not do) and install 10.6 from scratch.
will do this later. but ****, my last back up is a few days old.
any idea what could have caused this? drive hardware?

  • Macbook Pro crashes while trying to boot from install disc

    I have a 2.6GHz 17" Intel C2D MacbookPro running 10.6.6
Over the last few weeks I been experiencing numerous crashes, often while watching flash video. It freezes, the screen distorts and flashes and I have to reboot holding the power button.
Most times I can't turn it back on, it just won't get past the boot up stage. I generally try and boot from the install disc and/or another computer via firewire target mode, run permissions, disc warrior etc and eventually it will boot on it's own accord.
Now it won't even boot to the install disc. (the 10.5.2 disc that came with the computer)
It just crashes, screen dims and the 4 language warning asks me to hold down the power button.
I do notice that usually when you get these crashes that the background is a solid grey. but these times it's a speckled white and grey?
Is my graphics card on the way out (or out already)
Here's the crash logs from the last 2 crashes when I've got it to boot again.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Best regards
    Jesse

Yes, thus the link to the NVIDIA issue. NVIDIA is the maker of the GPU ("video card").
The quoted me $1000! I'm pretty bummed I need to spend that much on a 2 yr old machine. You should be able to expect more life than that.
If you're content to pay the $1000, no need to ask them to run the test for the NVIDIA issue. If you're not content, I would certainly ask them. Provide the link if they're unaware of it.
My only viable option is to buy the part off eBay and put it in myself.
Or have them test for NVIDIA issue. Or ask about a depot repair for $310.
