Won't go to sleep, any ideas?

My wife's iMac 17" won't go to sleep when I go to the apple menu bar and select sleep. Shut down and restart works fine. I already did 2 re installs of the OS, first saving all profiles and documents and the second one was a complete erase and install but with no luck. I did the Hardware test and it came OK and also ran the Disk utility with everything OK. So I do not know what is going on. Could anyone give me a tip??? Thanks

There are no known viruses for OS X.
When you stated in your original post that you ran Disk Utility, did that mean you repaired permissions?
One of these articles should pertain to your model G5. I couldn't tell which model when you stated 1.8 as there are 2 different models w/that number.
You may wish to try to reset the SMU to see if it helps.

  • I wasn't able to access my email on my pad, so I tried to shut it off, thinking I needed a software update.  Now my ipad won't shut off.  Any ideas?

My email was a white blank screen on my ipad.  Thinking I needed a software update, I tried to shut it off.  Now all I have is a black screen and the "working" logo in the center, but it won't shut off.
    Any ideas?

When you reset the iPad, wait until the Apple logo appears on the screen before you let go of the buttons.
Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Hello I went to wipe my 1st generation iPad and then tried to update the iOS now the iPad won't work at all any ideas what I can do?

Hello I went to wipe my 1st generation iPad and then tried to update the iOS now the iPad won't work at all any ideas what I can do?

You can't update the original iPad beyond iOS 5.1.1 so if you were already running that version, there was no reason to wipe the iPad to try to update.
Won't work at all, doesn't tell me the whole story. Does it power up but not respond to anything? Does it not power up at all? Some detailed information in context would really be helpful.
IF the device will not start up, try a reset. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices
Right-click or control-click the line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Quit the application if it's running. Move the selected item to the Trash. Relaunch the application and test.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Just got my other new ipad yesterday and am setting it up.  Wanting to use the same e-mail address but won't let me.  Any idea's.  We would like to be able to get into e-mails on both ipads. Thanks.

Just got my other ipad2 yesterday and would like to use the same e-mail that I use on the other one, but it won't let me. Any idea how to set that up.  I thought you could have like 5 on one acct.  Thanks.

No it's not stealing. They have an allowance that you can share with so many computers/devices. You'll have to authorize her computer to play/use anything bought on your acct. You can do this under the Store menu at top when iTunes is open on her computer.
As far as getting it all on her computer....I think but I am not sure (because I don't use the feature) but I think if you turn on Home Sharing in iTunes it may copy the music to her computer. I don't know maybe it just streams it. If nothing else you can sign into your acct on her computer and download it all to her computer from the cloud. Not sure exactly how to go about that, I haven't had to do that yet. I wonder if once you authorize her computer and then set it up for automatic downloads (under Edit>Preferences>Store) if everything would download. Sorry I'm not much help on that.

  • Ipod 20GB Won't Turn Off.  Any ideas?

It seems everything else works but the darn thing just won't power down. Any ideas?????
    Thanks!!!!!!
    ipod 20GB   Other OS

Are you trying to get it to turn off without running the battery down? Have you tried reseting it?
If you're willing to wait, you could let it run down, recarge it, and see if the problem is gone.

  • Sloow boot, won't sleep, any ideas?

So I'm running 10.5.2 on a 15in, 2.16ghz circa august 2007. Recently (as in the last two days) the computer will not wake from sleep and requires a manual restart. More than that, the computer never fully enters sleep. The screen shuts off, then the light turns on, but the light doesn't blink like it has entered sleep. And the cpu gets hot while the computer is "sleeping," this is with no applications running.
The second set of problems occurs on start-up. The boot takes 6-8 minutes to reach the login page, after which it boots normally (~5 sec). I checked the system log and found a major time gap occurs on every start-up, it logs something about the IOFireWireNode, then 3-4 minutes later gives the message: Timed out while waiting for the IOKit to be quiet.
I've reset the pram, smc (pmu), repaired permissions, booted from the DVD and repaired the hd, and run so many hardware checks that I am convinced it is a software issue. I have removed all USB devices, Bluetooth devices, everything but the power cord, turned off the wifi, etc. All of my software/firmware is up to date. The last time the system worked perfectly was two days ago. I didn't do anything unusual (perhaps I installed that recent Java update?), the only slightly odd thing that happened right before this problem occurred was an issue when ejecting USB drives... three devices wouldn't eject because they "were still in use," but they weren't, so after several tries I just pulled them, but that's fairly standard...
The Apple phone support recommended the "Nuke from Space" method (format the hd and reinstall everything) but I'd rather not. And if I have to, is there any way to keep my applications without needing to reinstall them from the dmg/disk? The disks are at my parents house and I'm away at school...
    Any ideas?

Do you have anything connected to it through usb or fw or bluetooth. Basically any kind of external peripherals could cause this.
Try disconnecting everything, turning off bluetooth and wifi and then try going to sleep.

  • Brand new Mac, had to erase drive through disk utility as time machine back up failed. Now disk utility only has the option to install Mountain Lion which my Mac won't allow. Anyone any ideas as my Mac won't load anything up but disc utility!

Brand new Mac, had to erase drive through disk utility as time machine back up failed on initial setup, USB cable popped out Now can only access disk utility as won't load to log in screen. The only has the option in disc utility is to re-install Mountain Lion which my Mac won't allow or loading another time machine back up but after an hour of it processing, that didn't resolve the issue either! The time machine back up is the latest back up of my Mac Book Pro which was using OS X Maverix. I'm guessing I'm going to have to take my Mac to the store but that would be a hassle so does anyone have any ideas?

Follow this guide using another Mac.
Insert your newly created Mavericks USB into you Mac, press the power button and then hold down 'option,' until it gives you an option to boot from the USB. You will then be able to erase the internal disk with Disk Utility and reinstall Mavericks straight after.
After that you should be able to use Migration Assistant to restore your applications and user data.

  • My Macbook Pro starts beeping and won't turn on. Any ideas?

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro.  It now won't turn on even though the light goes on.  It also makes a beeping noise that won't stop until I force it to shut down.  Does anyone have any ideas?

Normally - one would think that your RAM went bad if it's 3 beeps.
It could also mean that macbook can not find any valid os installed.
Have you recently upgraded your RAM?  if so - take them out and install the old one back and see what happens.
if however, you never upgraded your RAM - best suggestion is to take it to Apple and have them take a look at it.

  • Won't Start... any ideas?

    hi people,
just got the new education imac and on starting worked fine, but turning on for second use, won't start up. i see the white light, the powerup sound but black screen and nothing thereafter. any ideas?

Firstly, try holding down X at startup. This will force your iMac to boot into OS X. Failing that, try putting your install DVD in the drive and holding down C at startup. This will force your iMac to boot from your install DVD. You can then try repairing the disk from there (or if necessary reinstalling OS X).
If neither of these work, then I'd say Apple would be the best people to deal with your problem. Maybe you should just call them anyway? This is unacceptable in a completely new computer.

  • My iPad won't hold a charge ---any ideas?

My iPad won't hold a charge.  It even loses battery while it is on the charge. Any ideas???

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon.  The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.
Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight.  Admittedly the labeling is hard to read but, if you use a magnifier and squint your eyes, you'll see "Output 5.1V, 2.1A."  The symbol between volts and amps is the symbol for DC.  Do NOT use an iPhone charger.  Do NOT use an iPod charger.  Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear).  An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.
I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem.  I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.
    According to Apple:
    Use Your iPad Regularly
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).
Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.
