Won't mount RAID

We have a G5 running 10.4.3 and a 4.1 TB xserve RAID system setup. I have created 2 arrays (1-7, 8-14) and updated the firmware to ver. 1.5.
So RAID admin says everything is working, green lights across the board, G5 sees our Xserve RAID but I get an error that states the volume maybe unreadable and I am asked to initialize, ignore or eject.
How can I make this work? Why does it not mount the volume? Any ideas? New to the whole RAID thing.
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Have you ever formatted the RAID?
The first time you plug in the RAID there is no file system on it. You need to format it (initiailize) it to put HFS+ on the system so it can read it (or you can put RAID).
Select Initialize, and Disk Utility should fire up. Select if you want a pair of volumes, or a single (RAID 0) stripe across both.

  • External RAID Won't Mount

    Hi all -
I have a SimpleTech Quad-interface RAID which I'm running as RAID 1 for mirroring, which is supposed to be protecting archived video projects. I've been in the middle of a weeks-long NIGHTMARE trying to get an eSata Expresscard to work on this MBP, which is another story.
After numerous crashes, forced quits, etc testing various eSata cards, my RAID won't mount. It shows up the same whether I'm using FW400, FW800, or USB. When it powers up the Mac says it can't recognize the drive (Initialize, Ignore, or Eject), and Disk Utilities sees the box but only identifies the volume as disk1s2.
I have opened the box and attached the drives separately, and get the same response on both disks individually. Disk Utility can't verify or repair, and DiskWarrior can't see them at all.
I know I can reformat the RAID, but I really want to save these files. Is there any way I can do that?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Dave

You may have to reformat the RAID.
Do keep in mind that even RAIDs need to be backed up.

  • RAID won't mount until 20 minutes have passed

Every now and then I'll have a crash on my G5.
If I have to force quit through menus or manually through power my RAID won't mount after the restart.
The RAID is a striped 5 hard drive set at RAID 0. After some turning on and off of the RAID and plugging it back in, the drives appear on Disk Utility, but not the RAID image. After the drives appear the RAID waits 20 minutes until it mounts the proper way.
Any help on what is causing this?
    Thanks!

I suggest you check any drivers there may be for the eSATA card and also the firmware for the card.
RAID is a CoolGear 5 Bay PLCD
Created through Disk Utility on MAC OSX 10.5.8
Not having created a RAID using Disk Utility I am not sure if running it to 'Verify Disk' will adequately check your RAID but hopefully someone else will post re that.
It's been a few years, 5 maybe, doubt the warranty is still on.
90 days, they're having a laugh. That is the worst warranty I have ever seen for a RAID. I have seen cheap printers with a better warranty than that. I was expecting 3 years at least and maybe even 5

  • G-Raid won't mount 10.4.5

    Ok...
    Here we go ...
I reluctanly installed Tiger 10.4.0 on a "brand new" "freshly formated " Internal HD.
Did all the updates to get ne to 10.4.5, after each down load, I repaired permissions.
    Ok so far.
Started to load all apps, after each one rebuilt permiisions and even went so far as safe booting after much was installed.
    Well low and behold;
All my internal HD's mounted on the DT, My 1.5 Inetnal Raid mounted on the DT, my 2 Firewire 400's mounted on the DT, BUT:
    My 500gig G-Raid did not (FW 800).
So I did all things known to man and disconnected all externals,
Rebuilt Perm's and rebooted. No luck..
Booted from the CD and repaired disk, no luck there either.
I Booted from the Disk Warrior CD and repaired as well, No luck.
    System is a G-5 Dual 2.5
I then plud the G-Raid into my G4 1.67 Gig Laptop running 10.4.5, Low and behold it was there and wroks flawlessly.
Then went to a MacMini running 10.4.5 pluged her in; It mounted.
    Anyone know anthing here?
    Thanks

I've had a similar problem with a Formac 500 Oxygen drive, working fine in a RAID 0 setup until I powered it on today and was told I had an unrecognised device. Worse still, it won't mount on my Powerbook (also 10.4.5) either.

  • RAID Arrary won't Mount

I'm having some issues mounting my RAID on xserver Xeon, yesterday in order to mount the drive I had to go to RAID admin/utilities/make drive available for use, this process erased all the data and mounted the drive, but today after rebooting the server, the drive won't mount, I can't use the same fix as yesterday because my users have dumped a bunch of data on the drive which I can't erase, besides, even when I choose that option, the "make available" button is greyed out. any ideas on how I can mount the drive without having to erase the data?
    Thanks in advance.
    Ayo.

This sounds like a controller problem, where either one or both controllers are not properly seated, or one of the controllers is bad. Try powering off the array and reseating both controllers before powering back on. If that does not resolve the problem, you may have a bad controller. Have you checked the status of the controllers in RAID Admin and are you seeing any errors in the log?

  • XServe Raid won't mount after drive replacement

We had a drive go bad on an XServe Raid.  We replaced the drive.  It went through the rebuilding process. Now we can't mount the raid.  The verify in the disk utility is successful but it still won't mount.  What are we missing?

I have managed to fix the problem (at least it's still going at the moment...). We were just about to return the Fiber Card to Apple, but just before I removed the card from the G5 I had one last look at the settings on the RAID. Previously I had noticed that LUN Masking was on. I didn't take much notice of this before, as I read in an Apple manual somewhere that LUN Masking is always on while the Xserve is initializing the disks. As a last resort I thought to try and force LUN Masking to be disabled. I changed the array to JBOD, so the disks wouldn't be initialized, and entered the advanced settings. I then went to the LUN Masking section and turned off masking for both controllers. I then shut down the Xserve and unplugged it for 10 minutes.
I then turned on the Xserve and the G5 and to my utter delight, the G5 said "Unrecognized disk inserted"! The G5 was finally seeing the RAID.
I then formatted the RAID and everything has been fine since (4-5 hours).
I have no idea how LUN Masking turned on, the masking list had no devices in it, so the RAID was basically disallowing anyone access through fiber. Upon turning masking off, the RAID reappeared on the G5. Apple support said nothing about LUN Masking when I on the phone to them. I guess they though resetting the RAID controllers would reset the LUN Masking, but it doesn't seem to. I repeat: Resetting the RAID controllers does not reset LUN Masking.
All along this was the problem, but no-one at Apple or the reseller we purchased the Xserve RAID from thought of it!
I hope this helps someone out there.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Maxtor External Drive Won't Mount!

    Here is my problem.
We got a Maxtor One Touch III 1 TB external drive. I loaded about 850 GB of media onto it, passed it off to my partner to continue to edit our video project. Everything was running fine on my macbook pro 2.2 core duo. He edited for a day on his macbook 1.83 core duo. Said everything was fine.
That night he shut the machine down without unmounting the drive. He said the drive kept blinking so he shut it off. In the morning he tried to connect the drive to a g4 tower running 10.3.9. (I never realized he was so tech-vapid). He said the drive wouldn't mount. Then he moved it back to his macbook. Still wouldn't mount. Now it won't mount on my macbook or any machine. He then wonderfully told me he once had the same problem with a G-Drive 500 GB external. Wouldn't mount after switching it to his g4 and back. G-Tech told him the drive was dead so he sent it back. Maxtor told us this drive is dead, but I just think it sounds fishy.
It is still spinning, but there is no light on. Have tried every different kind of connection and updated drivers, same result. A friend said if it got unintentionally unmounted it might take the OS hours to fix it up because it's a RAID 0, suggested leaving it connected for a few hours and see what happens, but that happened once with my G-RAID and it didn't need time to fix itself. I am stupid for buying a maxtor it seems, but it doesn't change my dilemma.
    Someone help.

Check the /Volumes/ folder for a broken alias to the disk. The folder is invisible so you need to use the "Go" menu to open it.

  • XRAID won't mount

For some reason our XRAID (RAID 50) won't mount on the desktop anymore. Restarted everything multiple times to no avail. Disk Utility sees it, but complains about node structure when trying to either mount or eject it. Thinking of running Disk Warrior on it as I am running out of options. Any help appreciated!

to be more clear, when I try to mount through Disk Utility, it says the volume cannot be mounted and I should run First Aid. When running First Aid, I get the invalid node structure error.

  • Filesystem won't mount in rc.sysinit

My RAID card won't mount with the other filesystems in rc.sysinit, it displays
mount: special device /dev/sda1 does not exist.
However, I took it out of fstab and added the line
    mount -t reiserfs /dev/sda1 /var/lib/mysql
to rc.multi, so it mounts the filesystem right before it starts the mysql daemon, and it works just fine.
Any ideas as to what would cause this?

    Hi Olaf,
No, it hasn't gone away. I only have those two iPod menu items: HDSpecs and HDSMARTData.
But I don't think there's anything wrong with the iPod; it works on other machines. And no other iOS devices will work on this Mac; I've tried an iPad and an iPhone. I spent 20 minutes on the Apple support chat yesterday. They suggested I zap the NVRAM and the SMC but I've tried both of those. They gave up after that and suggested it was something to do with the Mac's logic board or power management chip. But that doesn't explain why it works perfectly well with my Android phone and my Kindle.
I don't want to take it in and find out the logic board is failing, so I'm just going to have to carry on listening to old music on my iPod, and never buy an iPad or iPhone!

  • Hard Disk Won't Mount; Lion Wants To Initialise It - Please Help!!

    Greetings All,
Disk issues! Help! Ok, I have an external RAID box (Sonnet 8 Bay SATA) with 4 pairs of RAID 1 drives. One of the pairs, 3Tb Hitachis, all of a sudden won't mount on OS X Lion. Everything was working fine, tried to save something to them, Mac refused, I restarted and the other three pairs show up, but the 3Tb Hitachi pair don't. OS X gives me the message that "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer". I've restarted the Mac and Sonnet box several times, checked that all drivers are up to date and reinstalled anyway. Have also taken the two drives out and tried to get them mounted on my Mac Pro or MacBook Pro using a FW800 dock without joy - always get the same message mentioned. Disk Warrior won't even help as when the Hitachi 3Tb is plugged in via the dock, the program hangs when it's scanning for disks. Although all the data on the drives is almost definitely backed up, I don't want to initialise / format the disks as there is a chance some video files aren't and also it'll knock FCP X as this was the primary drive where Events and Projects are stored.
Any suggestions would be thoroughly appreciated :-)
    Cheers,
    Edmond

    Hi,
Both drives physically are working (both bought together several months ago). The Sonner RAID software shows the RAID pair as ok and doesn't report any issues or errors - it sees both drives and the RAID 1 is 100% fine. So, as far as teh RAID box is concerned, all is well and there are zero issues.
When I try plugging the drives in seperately using a dock, neither will mount and give the same error message :-(
The issue seems to be at a data / OS level. Biggest initial problem is I can't mount them to check :-(

  • Won't mount partition!

Ok, I have no idea how to use all this XServe stuff. Not sure if it's a RAID or what. When we got it at work, some 3rd party was hired to install it and it never worked quite like I wanted it to. Basically, we have the XServe, something that's called a "SanBox"? and 3 computers connected. The guy created 4 partitions. One for my computer, one for graphics, and two for my bosses computer. He titled them Host 1 Media, Host 2 Media, etc.
All of the partitions seems to work on all the computers except mine. I get Host 3 Media and it won't mount to my desktop.
    Here's what I know:
I looked at the XServe. All the lights I see are green.
I opened disk utility and it seems to see the partition. I verified the disk. It ran some checks and seemed to be able to communicate.
I opened the system profiler and it says there is a link.
I opened the Raid Admin utility. It doesn't show anything at all. I tried to add a system but, it asked for an address and I have no idea what it's talking about.
Need more info? Let me know!
(It worked yesterday, I turned the computer off before I left, now it doesn't work today.)
Thanks, so much folks, you guys on these boards have helped me out before and I rather appreciate it.
    Kip Gordon

Hmm... i was afraid questions like this might be asked because i don't really know what all of that means...
When we bought the thing I was wanting to be able to share files across all the computers. Basically, I wanted one disk that all three computers could see and access the same files. When the guy came and set it up he said we couldn't do that without something or other that was a lot of money. My boss decided not to get that thing. So, the man set it up as the partitions saying it could work this way. I can't access the other partitions without using AFP.
    So, here's how I think it's setup.
All three computers are connected to the SanBox using fibre channel cables. The SanBox is connected to the Xserve.
When I boot my computer, my partition automatically shows up. Same with the graphics computer and my managers. Their partitions automatically show up. If I want to access the graphics partitions, I have to connect to that computer using AFP over our network, then mount their partition through their computer. If that makes sense...
Not sure if we're running Xsan. Not sure what that is. How would I find out?
Also, rereading your response... you say one xserve, one xserve raid, a Qlogic FC switch, and three computers.
what is the difference between an xserve and an xserve raid? I get what the Qlogic is.. that's the "SanBox" and the 3 computers... duh. heh.
I have a big silver box that's made by apple. A black box that says SanBox and then three computers. If that helps...
If I'm making no sense let me know... I'm trying to learn all this from the bottom up at the moment! lol

  • Hard Disk Won't Mount Volume

I have a hard disk that won't mount. It was previosly part of a software mirror RAID. The raid was degraded, so I tried to rebuild the second raid mirror. THis failed, and now the master won't mount either. In TechTools, the drive is reported as being fine, but the volume still won't mount. Any suggestions? This is really setting us back a bit.

  • Need help with Lacie Big Extreme that won't mount

    OK Guys,
My buddy's Lacie 1TB Big Extreme won't mount to any computer we try. The blue light is flashing. We have tried different cables on different computers. After a web search for similar problems we found out several people had success just plugging in a new power supply. So, we ordered one. Didn't work.
I can hear the drive spinning up. Oh, I guess I should mention this unit is out of warranty.
Here's my question. After some research, I found out this drive has 2 hard drives inside and set up as Raid 0. This is the way Lacie sets these up for use right out of the box. So if I take the Lacie enclosure apart and try to mount the drives separately in another generic enclosure what will I see in terms of the files written on a single drive (assuming it mounts) since I am dealing with an initial Raid 0 set-up? My intention is to save the files. Please help.

Same problem with an external LaCie Little Big Disk = does not mount, but shows up under FireWire in System Profiler. I assume it's a OS X issue, because I ran a software "Data Rescue II" and this software has recognized the disk.
Has probably something to do with one of the latest OS X updates, because I've used this disk with Time Machine now more than a year and never had a problem.
I recommend not to experiment with partitioning/reformatting (if you care about the data on the disk) and push Apple for a solution. It assume it's some kind of an access problem.

  • Can't install Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro - DVD won't mount

I am unable to install Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro as the DVD won't mount.  This is an early 2008 vintage MacBook Pro, intel core duo...
I'm using a OS X Snow Leopard install DVD (family licensed).  This DVD has been used to install 3 other Macs in my house without a problem (about a year ago), but cannot be used to upgrade my MBP.  Actually, this disk mounted on the MBP exactly once - inserted with system up, the disk mounted.  Upon running the installed (a year ago), the computer restarted but hung in boot.  After getting the disk ejected and the computer restarted, the disk would never mount again.  I've defered upgrade for a year but at this point need to upgrade my MBP at least to Snow Leopard and possibly Lion.
The problem doesn't seem to be with the DVD, since it continues to mount fine in other computers, and in fact a borrowed Snow Leopard DVD also will not mount on the MBP.
BUT ... the problem also does not seem to be with the optical drive in my computer, as it can read & mount the install/restore disks that came with the computer as well as other CDs and DVD ROMs.  Only the Snow Leopard install DVDs fail to mount.
I've also tried mounting the 10.6 install DVD on my Mac Pro desktop, making it available over the network (ethernet) with DVD/CD sharing.  I can mount the remote disk from my MBP that way, but when I launch the installer, the application launches (its own menus are displayed, I can quit from menu, for example) but does nothing -- no windows open, nothing.
I've also tried "Remote Install" (again with the DVD made available with the Remote Install MacOS X application on my desktop), but when I boot the MBP with option held down, the remote disk is not available as a startup disk.
Zapping the PRAM did not help.
Am off to the store to get an optical drive cleaning kit and a blank DVD big enough to burn a new disk image, but would appreciate any further ideas at this point....

Solution that worked: Copy the Install DVD to a USB flash drive and boot from that.
