Won't power on after Hard Drive swap - torn ribbon beneath battery

While installing a hard drive for a friend in his 2006 black macbook, 13", I may have severed a few of the traces in the wire that seems to run from the trackpad (see image below for the location of the wire)
There is a little exposed section in the battery compartment that sticks up in a way that's begging to get caught in my view.

Anyways now the thing won't start up drive in/out or with old drive. I gather that wire also carries the keyboard signal that has the power button, or else I've shorted something else somehow.
Anyone know if this is fixable with some part short of paying a limb at Apple Store?
Thanks kindly,
Bryan

• Bad iBook G4 WiFi reception after hard-drive swap

I just replaced the hard drive in my iBook G4 with a larger one. Everything works fine except that the WiFi only works in close proximity to our Airport Extreme Router. Our other 2 current Macs and our 2 iPhones continue to have good WiFi connections. The iBook G4 had good WiFi reception before I changed out the hard drive. The stock Airport Extreme antenna connector is well-seated, and the plug and jack look fine. I disassembled the iBook and traced the antenna wiring to see I could spot any anaomolies.

Thanks, Ronda!
I just swapped the Apple M8881LL/A AirPort Extreme Card in my Power Mac G5 and my iBook G4. Both cards work perfectly in the G5. The "new" card works a little better in the iBook G4, but not anywhere near its performance in the G5 or the original AirPort card in the iBook before the hard-drive swap.
The antenna was treated with great care in the disassemblies, so I don't think it was damaged from that. What does the antenna connect to inside the iBook? Could it be that it's not making contact on one of the shields?
Any help is much appreciated!

• Apple TV does not appear in iTunes after hard drive swap. (original ATV)

I recently upgraded the internal hard drive in my mac book pro. I removed the original drive and and put it into an external casing. With the new, larger capacity drive in place, i reinstalled the operating system and the updates, bringing it up to snow leopard, 10.6.4. I then dragged in the user and other important files to the new drive. For the most part, everything worked, except, Apple TV
Apple TV now longed shows up in itunes. It is visible on my wife computer and when i reboot from the "original" external drive. I assume there is some setting or file that i did not transfer over, but for the life of me, can figure out.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thx

Are you doing it in this order? (#5 below is a good inicator of whether the micro USB cable is compatible)
1. Unplug Apple TV and move it to your computer running latest version of iTunes.
2. Quit iTunes if running.
3. Plug micro USB cable to the back of the Apple TV.
4. Power the Apple TV using  the AC cable.
5. iTunes shoud either launch itself (a good indication that the micro USB cable you're using is compatible), or launch iTunes.
6. Click Restore. Software will download and install (big file).

• How do I find my lost preferences! (after hard drive swap-out

I replaced my bay 2/3 mirrored drives with larger drives, then copied over the data from one of the old drives from bay 4. My problem is I now have just a generic desktop, all my: dock and web preferences are missing, my copy of fetch wants a serial number. All my data is there but someone things are mixed up. Here's exactly what i did:
In bay 1 I have the original drive, which has all my applications, etc.
In Bays 2/3 I had two 500gb drives with my documents (mostly photos). This set up got too small so I bought 2 x 1 tb drives.
I placed the two new drives in bay 2/3 and one of the old 500gb drives in bay 4.
I turned on the computer and formated the 2 new drives as mirrored. I then dragged/copied of my documents from bay 4 to 2/3.
All works, all is there on the drives but I get a generic "dock", and all my preferences in firefox, etc. are missing, just generic copies of the software.
Also, when I tried to open "fetch" it asked me for my serial number, although other software, such as Lightroom open fine (although it does not automatically open to my Lightroom library).
i have tried restarting the computer several times, to no help. I've also tried logging out but this also does nothing. <<<<<<<<<<
I'm sure I made some mistakes doing this, like I didn't un-raid the old drives first.
Thanks, ron

Preferences are not located in the Documents folder. You need to copy a lot more stuff:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
/Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
If you want cookies:
/Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
/Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
For FireFox:
/Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
/Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist
Credit goes Macjack for this information.
You may need to copy other folders in Applications Support for you applications.

• LR 3.5 won't open catalog after hard drive crash/recovery

The catalog and the rest of my files were restored to the new HD installed in my WinXP laptop by computer repair techs. After I reinstalled LR, I get the dread "LR cannot use the catalog named "Lightroom 3 Catalog" because it is not writable..." There is not an lrcat.lock file next to it and the permissions for the catalog file are open. I tried opening the last back up catalog before it but I get the same result. The program will however open an empty catalog I had made eariler but not used. I tried switching from empty catalog to the problem catalog but I still get the same result. The catalog is in the LR folder in My Pictures as it should be. I can't believe that one file of thousands would be corrupt after the recovery.I'm out of answers. Does anyone out there have an solution I've missed? Thanks in advance!
Echo

Thanks, Ian. Are you referring to something different from the information I mentioned about the permissions for the file being open? They are not restricted. There are no check marks in the General tab. I tried the back up files but they don't work either. I'm getting a little desparate. I do't want to re-catalog 20,000 images!

• Fans running after hard drive swap

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 and last week my boot drive failed and I purchased a new drive, installed it and restored everything from my Time Machine Back-up. Everything is fine except now when the Mac Pro goes to sleep and I wake it, the Mac Pro fans run at full speed for about 3 minutes. The fan then spin down and it runs fine the rest of the day or until it sleeps again and wakes.
Any clues?

Try an SMC reset.

• Dv7 3085dx won't power on after adding 2nd hard drive

I'm attempting to add a 2nd drive to my laptop (dv7 3085dx). The drive is a Seagate Momentus 750GB drive (ST9750420AS). I purchased the drive caddy and connector from Newmodeus. The laptop will not power on after the drive is installed in the 2nd bay. Everything is fine if the drive is disconneted.
Any ideas?

Are you absolutely sure you got the right caddy and cable from newmodeus? They sell several different ones for the dv7 series and they look similar but are not compatible with each other. I understand the reluctance to try hot-plugging it.

• No internet after hard drive replacement

HI. After 4.5 years of abuse I decided to replace my internal hardrive on my Powerbook G4 1.25ghz. I did the repair my self and everything seemed to be working out well. I installed tiger 10.4.6 and the computer booted right up and was working just as fast as the day I bought it. All my joy came to a halt when I realized I could not connect to the internet. I can see and connect to my wireless router and the ethernet connection recognized the router etc... It just won't connect to the internet. I tried updating to 10.4.9 which was the latest update on the old hard drive. This did nothing to help. Reinstalled OSX again and the same thing happened. Is there something a could have screwed up while doing the hard drive swap??? The only thing I can think of is to take it apart and put it back together again. Heeeeeeellllpppp!!!! I can't afford an new laptop. I don't know if its a related issue, but the lower memory slot does not recognize any ram chips but it has been like that for a while now.

Fixed it. Ended up resetting the router to its factory default and then redoing all my old configuration. Strange thing is that my macpro and ibook had not problems which is why I suspected the router last. What a pain but at least I didn't have to replace anything.

I have a 5 month old  iMac running Lion and W7 with the latest version of boot camp . It has been operating flawlessly until I went to reboot into Mac tonight. Screen went black, and system is unresponsive. I've tried force quitting and turning power off. Hard drive starts, there's a small amount of drive activity and that's it.

Hi Jane, your info may still be there, look in the Users folder at root of the drive, how many users are there there?
It sounds like this may have happened...
Return to default desktop, apparent "loss" of home directory, (it can happen spontaneously too)...

• MacBook Air won't recognize iOmega External Hard Drive

I just bought my macbook air and I wanted to transfer my data over from my old MacBook. The MacBook died so I was using my backup. The problem is that the Air won't recognize the ext hard drive. I connected the ext hard drive to my AirPort Extreme for the migration assistant but I keep getting a connection failed message. I tried plugging in the drive to the air directly using USB but it won't recognize it at all. The drive won't mount. The drive begins spinning and the light is on so the drive does work. It always worked with my old MacBook. I did alway connect it with FireWire so could that cause a problem since I have to connect it with USB to the Air?

I had a similar issue with mine but it was because I tried to connect to an external drive that was already connected to my iMac via FW800. When I disconnected the FW cable and plugged in the USB, everything worked perfectly.

• How do I unactivate after hard drive crash?

Just purchased an upgrade to CS6 Photoshop from CS3 Photoshop but hard drive crashed before I could uninstall it. How do I deactivate after hard drive crash? Do I need to or can I just load my full CS3 copy and then upgrade it to my new CS6?

You can just install CS6 directly.  You will be prompted to enter your qualifying serial number from CS3 during the install process.

• Firefox won't stop using my hard drive. I've had to start using Chrome.

Firefox won't stop using my hard drive.
I've had to stop using it as it drives me nuts.

Thanks for that.
It's been behaving itself since I did the 'safe mode' thing.
I suspect it may have been Free Download Manager which is now disabled.
I'll see how it goes for the time being. Things are looking good.
Thanks for all your help, much appreciated! :-)
