Won't print black ink

HP5510 All In One.  Printer started printing in very light blueish gray ink.  Changed the black cartridge (NEW HP ISSUED not refurbished) and it still didn't work.  Cleaned printeheads, aligned printer, unplugged printer and still didn't work.  I then ran out of yellow ink so I replaced it and it still wouldn't print black.  Then I ran out of blue ink working on all these issues and replaced blue cartridge now it won;t print at all.  I have repeated all the above steps. Now my magenta ink is low.
When this problem started all the colored cartridges were close to full. The ink has been depleted with repeatedly following the directions to correct the black ink issue.
I have put the printer in greyscale, black ink only and still the issue is unresolved.  The printer is not in warranty.

Hi @turtleinthesand,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums! I see you are running into some print quality issues on your HP Photosmart 5520, you are unable to print in black ink after replacing the cartridge.
I would like you to continue here: Printer Does Not Print Black Ink or Color Ink, or Prints Blank Pages, I understand you may have done some of these steps already but I need you to complete all steps in order to resolve the missing black issue you are experiencing.
Please note: There are three printhead cleaning stages. Complete all three stages if necessary. If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes after the last (third) cleaning stage to start the first stage of the cleaning process over again.
If you are still unable to print in black ink, I suspect the issue may be the printer and not the cartridge. Please let me know which Country/Region you are in?
I hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks

  • HP Photosmart 6510 won't print black ink

I changed the ink cartridge in my printer and it won't print black ink now.
I have used almost an entire cartridge of my color inks running alignments and cleaning the printhead. I have also cleaned the print head with a cotton swab and some warm water.
I have delted the software and reinstalled it.
I have always used HP cartridges.
The printer is out of warranty. I'm in the US.
I have also ran every reset I can find online, nothing is working.
I appreciate your help as I am a broke college student and can't really afford a new printer at the moment.
    Thanks!

Hello @valster101 and welcome to the HP Forums!
One thing I see that hasn't been tried is checking the vents on the cartridges. Please have a look through this Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Photosmart 6510 e-All-in...s document to make sure you have tried all of these steps at one point or another.
If it still won't print black after that, just let me know and I'll do my best to get you a resolution

  • Photosmart 5200 won't print black ink

Hi there, I purchased the printer just over a year ago. It hasn't been used much at all. For the last few months I have continuously changed the black ink cartridge as it is saying it is empty or low and it still won't print black. The colour functions fine. I have tried all the settings options of cleaning and aligning and it doesn't make any difference. I only print via air print from iPhone and iPad, and the documents sent are extremely basic word docs. The printer is in perfect condition and I am out of warranty. Please can you advise how to fix as I rely on the printer for my invoices! Thanks

    Hello,
Since you have replaced Black ink cartridges and tried performing Clean Printhead and issue still exists, i'd suggest you to call HP Tech Support for further assistance.
If you are in US , the toll free # is 1-800-474-6836 .
If you are not in US , then log on to www.hp.com , at bottom-left corner there is a world map icon, click on it and then select the region you belong to, which would then provide support options for you for that region.

  • Printer won't print black ink; have already replaced printhead 1 month ago

My Office Jet 6500 e709n stopped printing black ink first part of December. I followed all the instructions on the HP site and cleaned printhead several times, replaced ink with new cartridges and ended up replacing the printhead and purchased from HP with a return of my old printhead.  I installed easily and printer worked.  Now one month later, the black ink does not print again.  I have cleaned printhead several times, replaced ink cartridges and checked vents.  Any other solutions?  Is it time to buy a new one?  I'm a little frustrated that the HP printhead I purchased only one month ago appears to need replacement so soon.

    Hi @StMelG,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that your HP Officejet 6500 e709n will not print in black. I am sorry for the frustration, but I am happy to help!
Please take a look through this guide, Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Officejet 6500 All-in-On....

  • Photosmart premium 3-all-in-one printer won't print black ink

My hp photosmart 3-all-in-one C310 series does not print black ink on the page.  The cartridge is new, and all of the ink cartridges are full.  The printer is 3 years old, just one month out of warranty.  I have downloaded all the latest updates, I'm pretty sure, and have gone to the troubleshooting page on the hp web site.  I have followed all the directions, twice, and still no black print.  Please help, I do not want to buy a new printer!
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Under Tools, I only see "Clean cartridges" not "Clean printhead."
When I selected "Clean cartridges" twice, the black ink printed!  Hooray! Once I post this, I hope get back to the page to say the problem is "Solved"!
Oh, while I have you on-the-line, while the cartridges were being cleaned, I got a message saying that I had to download the newest hp drivers, since the ones I have are not compatible with this version of Windows.  However, I did download the latest drivers for 8.1 from your web site when I had a horrible paper jam.  After I downloaded the newer drivers, that problem was fixed.  But, since I am getting this message re incompatibility, do I have to download again?  It was only a couple of weeks ago (three at the most) that I downloaded the drivers.
    Thank you again!

  • PhotoSmart Premium fax C309 won't print black ink

Windows Xp series 2. Had been refilling ink cartriges when problem first occured. Installed two new black ink cartriges and still wouldn't print black ink. Cleaned print heads several times using the menu on the printer. Still did not correct the problem. Color is fine. Did a print test report and all color ink shows fine but no black. Alignment is fine. Do I need a new print head? Printer only gets occasional use.

  • All in one printer won't print black ink - colour only

My all in one printer won't print in black right now - colour only - even though the black ink is new.  It will print a couple of black ink pages and then reverts to colour.  If I give it a rest it will print a couple more black pages and then again, in colour - I think something needs cleaning but I don't know what - any help is much appreciated!  Val

Please read this post then provide some details. What printer model? What operating system? Is the black cartridge an original HP or a third party or refill/renamufactured cartridge? (The symptom is typical of a poorly refilled cartrdige....)

  • Printer won't print black ink.

    Hi all,
I am recently experiencing printer problems with my HP deskjet F4180. After seeing an error message to refill ink, I went and bought new black HP 21 ink. When I printed a few pages the black ink only came out blue but my computer says both cartridges are full. I printed out the diagnostic test and the red did not appear and the yellow was poor. I am wondering if I have to buy a new color cartridge or I can print in black and white only?
    Thank you!

The user manual here indicates on page 66 the printer can operate in ink backup mode by removing the color cartridge.

  • 5510 all in one won't print black ink

    Hello guys,
I see that this issue has come up before, sorry for being a broken record!
My HP 5510 is not printing black, and I have followed the troubleshooting steps on this board. I am very frustrated because I am 3 months out of the 1 year warranty, and I for troubleshooting purposes, I purchased nearly $55 worth of ink! I have no idea if Best Buy will take it back since the cartridges are opened and installed in my printer.
What options do I have to get a working printer?

  • Won't print black ink with new cartridge

I have read all advise. Black stopped printing. New genuine HP cartridges. Did partial and whole resets. Cleaned printhead. Removed all cartridges and case and cleaned well. Very gunky. Still won't print HELP ME! Have read thru all the posts and did everything

The post here may help resolve black not printing on your Offcieejt 6500, go through all the troubleshooting steps in the document referenced there and if that does not resolve the issue then try soaking the printhead.
If this does not resolve the issue you may need to replace the printhead.

  • My HP Photosmart 6510 won't print black ink

Tried to add a response to the existing link for this issue, but couldn't find a way to do that.  Maybe I'm just blind.  Nonetheless, here are my answers to the information that has been requested:
    1. Which model HP printer you have. = 6510
    2. Whether you have followed the steps in the Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink document for your printer and whether the steps worked or not (just Google that document title along with the name of your printer to locate the right document). = Yes, tried them.  No, they didn't work.
    3. What country you reside in. = USA
    4. Whether the printer is in or out of warranty. = Yes, it is.
Seems like this is a fairly significant issue in the market.  I hope a countermeasure is being developed.
    Thanks for your help.

  • Officejet 6500 - suddenly won't print black ink

I have an OfficeJet 6500.  It used to work just fine, but all of a sudden, the black ink is not working.  I checked that there was ink in the cartridge (there was), and I even replaced the cartridge with a new one.  I did a print test page, and the colors are working, but no black ink.  I tried rebooting, reinstalling drivers, plugging directly into wall outlet, but still no luck.  Sometimes, I can see very faint black ink on  the page, but it is definitely unusable like this.  Anyone have any ideas on what to do?
I am on Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit.  There weren't any changes made to the computer right before this problem started.

You need to get a new printhead

  • Printer won't print black ink on plain paper but WILL on photo paper.

Suddenly my printer stopped printing black text, main tray.  I put in a new cartridge, clean print heads, cleaned screen, reset the printer, etc., etc. Then I found it WILL print text in black on photo paper in main tray.  It will print colored text, it just WILL NOT print black text on plain paper, I have tried different brands of plain paper.  No difference.  I have tried different quality settings, I have deleted and re-installed the printer, update software, prayed, etc.  Even tried wired and wireless connections. I give up.  Please help.

    Hi @plutolover2011
I'd like to help you be able to print again. I understand your colored cartridges are working, but the black ink is not.  Please begin with the steps in the following document; Printer Prints a Blank Page or Does Not Print Black or Color Ink for the HP Photosmart Premium C309a...
If you complete all of the steps in the document above and the issue continues, my own personal recommendation, not one of HPs, is to use the solution offered in the following video.  I only suggest doing this if he printer and printhead are out of warranty.  Hot Water Printhead Flush - HP Ink Series Printers with removable Printhead.
I have recommended this solution to others and have seen success, but I can not guarantee this will resolve the issue, it is an end of the line kind of effort. I hope it helps.

flushing it worked, Yeah!!!!!!! thanks for your help.
Although the printer might be out of warranty, if the issue persists, HP may be able to offer you something. Maybe they can offer you a discount on a newer model, or discuss the option of replacing the printhead!  If after all of our efforts the issue remains, I suggest calling HP. If you are in Canada or US call 800 474 6836, or you can Contact HP Worldwide.
Thanks for reaching out to the HP Forums. I hope one of my recommendations resolves the issue.

    Hello dasdoos,
Please try the below steps ..
    On the printer front panle....
press the SETUP ( wrench icon ) > Tools > Clean Printhead.
You might have to repeat the above step atleast for 2-3 times.
Each time the printer would print a test report, check for the presence of Black.
If issue still exists, then printer need to serviced.
It didn't work and finished my other inks.
All the people that wrote here didn't really get a solution and the people that talked to the support got another printer (a new one) - it doesn't sound like a solution to me.
And of course most of the people dosn't have warranty anymore.
I'll probably buy a new printer soon and it won't be HP.
