Won't read any cd/dvd roms, not even the Install disc

It just spits everything out. I haven't done any big changes lately... any thoughts?

I know that this sounds like voodoo, but try the Install disc one more time, paying attention to which direction it is installed. When it ejects it, turn it one-quarter of a turn and try reinserting it in that orientation. (This sometimes helps acceptance of a disc.)
If it still ejects it, you may want to try cleaning the optical drive with a cleaning disc to see if that helps.
Good luck.

I have tried to download Mavericks on my 2010 iMac(10.6.8), but nothing happens, not even the install app downloads, also I tried to download chrome, I moved it to the applications folder and when I opened the folder it wasn't there. I have a 1tb hard drive that is mostly empty. By the way I just got this imac used from a reseller.

Mavericks downloads into the Applications folder, where you can install it.   Some Mac App Store Troubleshooting information and how to resume a download that was interrupted; some of the information here might get you an answer.   Failing that, try contacting Apple Support.

  • IBook won't read any CD/DVDs...

All of a sudden my iBook does not want to read any CDs and DVDs... it would not even read the Installation CDs... two days ago was just fine - i burned CDs without a problem whatsoever...
When I insert any type of CD either it spits it out after a few seconds, or keeps trying to read but nothing really happens...CD image does not appear on the desktop. Feels like it is trying to read it but it cannot.... could the problem be that it needs cleaning?
I know it's hard to say like that without even looking at it, but I would appreciate any opinions...

Hopefully the optical drive hasn't failed; hard to say if some procedure
could help restore use of the drive. A dirty optical drive may have some
thing to do with the problem; but even so, a disc should mount unless
the drive has gone bad. It may need cleaning, or replacement.
Not sure if there is a software possibility involved in this situation; since
it seems to me to be a hardware problem. Maybe you will have to think
about getting an estimate from some reputable specialists who do 'out
of warranty' work; unless you have an active AppleCare Plan in effect.
Then, if you do, a call to Apple would be in order. Best wishes.

what to do please i am facing great trouble because of this issue.

I HAVE FOUND A FIX! Searching through the support blogs paid off in a big way. A minor registry edit is all it took and my drive is working like new! Here's the fix. My system is Windows 10 64-bit.  Resolution 5: Create a registry subkey
Note To use this method, you must be logged on to Windows as an administrator. If you need help verifying that you are an administrator, go tohttp://support.microsoft.com/gp/admin
Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.
To create the registry subkey, follow these steps:
Press the Windows logo key + R to open the Run box. (or right-click on windows icon in lower left corner)
Type regedit in the Run box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow
In the navigation pane, locate the following registry subkey:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi
Right-click atapi, point to New, then click Key.
Type Controller0, and then press Enter.
Right-click Controller0, point to New, and then click DWORD(32-bit) Value .
Type EnumDevice1, and then press Enter.
        Right-click EnumDevice1, click Modify....
Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
        Exit Registry Editor.

Hello, I have a problem. I am trying to burn a DVD+R DL from memorex and everytime I put it in my drive it always eject. But the drive works since I just re-installed my OS from the mac OS boot disc that came with the computer when I bought it. And I also installed programs from dvd before. You can try resetting the SMC Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
and PRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
If that doesn't help you can try a cleaning disc or a quick shot of canned air. It's likely though that your drive has failed, it' not all that uncommon. It that is the case you can either replace it or have it replaced but it's far cheaper just to buy a usb external drive....just not Apples because it won't work with macs with a built in drive working or not. .

  • IPhoto won't read any of my portrait photos, only the landscape ones. They only show up as black portraits and I already erased them off my memory card. Any idea how to retrieve them or fix the problem?

I am using a 16 GB Sandisk Extreme Pro SD Card with a Canon EOS 60D camera and my files are saved as .raw on the memory card. I imported all my photos into iPhoto and then clicked the 'delete photos', as I always do after I imported by pictures, but when I went through my pictures I saw some black rectangles. It appears that all my portrait-orientated photos are just black whereas my landscape photos are perfectly fine. My portrait potos did turn up on my camera screen when I checked them through as I took them but now they're gone. Any idea if this is a software problem with iPhoto, an error with my memory card or even my camera? I've experienced this problem a bunch of times and it's really starting to annoy me that I'm losing all my photos.

    What version of iPhoto?
Select one and rotate it. Then rotate it back. Does that make it appear?
A much better work flow is the keep the photos after importing.  Check the success the import, wait for at least one successful backup cycle then use you camera's format command to reformat the card

  • I have a corrupted version of Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and do not have the install disc to perform remote start and repair.

I am wondering if I can download a copy of Snow Leopard somewhere and create a boot disc, so I can boot from the disc and then run a disc repair.
Alternately, could I install Lion and resolve the issue, or would the underlying corrupted files remain? (When I run fsck -fy, it detects multiple threads but can't repair the issue)
Any help or insight would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Mike

I also have this problem which has gone from bad to worse.  I bought a new installation disc now I cannot use the computer at all.  It states I can not iinstall...I cannot repair ....

  • Drive won't read any dvd-ejects it automatically after spinning some time

The SuperDrive on my MBP has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my wife's Sony Vaio laptop.
There was a thread on this previously, but Apple has closed it:

I know Apple won't own up to the problem, so has anyone found a solution?

Dunno why, but I think this has something to do with the Security Update 2009-001 Apple posted on its download platform a few days ago. Must have wrecked my SuperDrive somehow--and maybe yours, too--and I agree with Ryan when he says Apple hasn't been up to its reputation, lately. Maybe the market pressure got too much, and they started buying cheaper components...
Makes me wonder; imagine, you buy the brand new MacBook/MacBook Pro, with its encased battery and other fancy stuff, and something breaks down in the beast's belly. What do you do, then, bring it back to that some so-called Genius tells you to send it in to AppleCare.
    Naughty, naughty, Apple...

  • After SL-DVD drive won't read any dvd-ejects it after spinning some time

Yesterday I bought the SnowLeopard DVD in order to do the update of my Mac OS.
Right after inserting the DVD in the drive (MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221) it started to have some problems with reading the DVD.
The Drive has stopped recognizing/reading any blank DVD media (and many recorded DVDs, including movie discs). It spins for some time with a noise and then ejects it out. The same media works fine in my Toshiba laptop.
I tried several times, but the drive isn't able to read the DVD and now has the same problem with other CD-Roms and DVD.
I am very suprised (and angry) about it, especially because I hardly use the drive.
As a lot of other people are having the same problem, there seems to be a structural problem with the drive and I think that Apple has to clearify if they are planning to do something and what.

Mine MacBook seems to be doing almost the same thing. The SL disk spins a bit then is ejected. It does the same thing with my first SL disk and the one Amazon sent as a replacement. I had the same trouble with the 10.5 Install disk purchased retail. Apple sent a replacement Non-retail disk and it worked. I can burn DVDs and read DVDs I've burned.

  • Photo DVD: Saving images to DVD-ROM not working

When creating a photo slide show In iDVD, there is an option to save the photos to the DVD-ROM portion of the disc so that viewers can download them to their own computer.
After I created a photo slide show in iDVD, it played just fine on both the computer and on a DVD player. But when I have the DVD in my computer's super drive and I try to access any of the photos (jpeg files) that are on the DVD-ROM portion, I get an error message saying they can't be opened.
    What am I doing wrong?
I have iLife 09 with iDVD version 7.1.2. My OS is Lion 10.7.2.

    > 8mp camera and I have the images saved in TIFF which are 22.9m in size
    That makes no sense.
    > So resolution is not an issue.
    Yes it is.
There are 2 issues here: file format and image size/resolution.
The best format depends upon what the print shop will accept. Often, JPEG is the only option and simply saving at the highest quality will give excellent results. If the option is available from the shop, give them a non-lossy format - TIFF is probably best.
With image size it's all down to pixels and looking at th epixel size of your image is what matters. The "resolution" [PPI value] is simply the ratio of pixels in the image to inches on paper. So long as you PPI is at least 200 and no more than, say, 600, you are OK. Print shops operate in 2 ways:
The expensive ones will take your image and you tell them how big you want to print and they do it.
The cheaper ones require the image be carefully prepared to be the right size - i.e. have the PPI set so that the size in inches is right.
In my experience, the cheaper ones, while requiring more work, often produce the best results.
If you are in the UK, email me [colin_walls AT yahoo DOT com] and I will direct you to an excellent mail-order printer, who is cheap, reliable and produces excellent results. [I have no business connection with them, except that I'm a happy customer.]

  • TouchSmart 300 Dvd Player won't read or burn DVD

My dvd player is not working correctly.  I am able read and burn CDs, but the player won't read or write DVDs.  I have a touchsmart 300 running Windows 7.  I was trying to burn some home movies in WMA format.  Movie Maker recognizes a blank DVD, and attempts to burn the DVD, but once it finishes, the disk is blank.  I then tried to just burn a MPG file using another software program and it failed at the validation stage.  Finally, I put a dvd movie in the drive and it wont recognize the disk.  These functions used to work fine.  The computer is only 15 months old, of course I only had a one year warranty.
Is there anyway this could be related to software or is it a hardware problem?

    Hi,
First, try the automated fixit from Microsoft on the link below.
    Windows 7
If it still isn't working, try the following.
Next, from the Start Menu, open the Control Panel and click on Device Manager.  Next click to open DVD/CD-ROM Drives.  Right click the drive and select uninstall.  Do not delete drivers if asked.  When the device has uninstalled click on the 'Scan for Hardware Changes' icon ( usually just below Help on the toolbar ).  Let windows reinstall the drive and see if it now works.
    Regards,

  • Super Drive won't mount any commercial DVD.

Since I use an eSata cage to back up the majority of my stuff, I can't say how long this has been going on. I believe it happened last week after I did a software update. My superdrive (PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-117D) will not mount or read any commercial DVD as well as ripped DVD's of movies. This includes not only any movies but also any original software installation dvd's from vendors (including apple). The superdrive does recognize dvd's to burn and dvd's I have burned on it. It also has no problem w/ any cd. The same thing has happened on my 15" PB w/ superdrive.
    Thoughts? And thanks,
    Drew

    by the way...
my 15" PB 1.5 w/ combo drive doesn't have a problem. Also I was able to mount my OSX tiger upgrade DVD w/o a problem on the G5. I can't however mount the iLife 5 installation DVD (get the message that "this disk is unreadable by this computer"). It (iLife 5) does show up in disk utility and I am currently trying to make a disk image.
