Won't read disk

My Dell died (surprise) and I had all of my data taken from the hard drive (most importantly photos) saved to disk. I now have a MacBook and it won't read this disk. Why?
How do I get the old photos off this disk and onto my MacBook? I don't have another computer to use, what do I do?

You still haven't really answered my question.
"saved the info to disk" <--what does that mean? CD, DVD?

  • Macbook won't read disks!

my macbook won't read disks, it justs ejects it immediately after insertion.  It's a software based issue because I have my hard drive partitioned with linux mint, and on the linux os all disks work with no problems.  It might be a red flag but I ran an executable file earlier labeled nocd.  On the other hand though acouple days ago I inserted a disk for an apple tech utility and it just ejected the disk immediately as well which was the first time this happened, but i didnt think anything of it because I assumed the utility just wasn't compatible with my computer.  I work at a help desk for a university so i thought maybe because it was not a university owned computer, I don't know, i'm not sure what my logic was there. but reguardless what i've tried was to kill backround processes involved with disk mounting and letting them respawn, there don't seem to be any unusual processes running on my system over all, after I killed those processes my home directory couldn't be located, I'm not sure if what I killed had anything to do with it, and don't really believe it did.  I know the superdrive is not dirty or anything of that sort seeing as it read the disk fine in linuxmint.  Any suggestion?  thanks in advance for any replies

  • DVD drive won't read disks at boot

    I have a Paviliton DV6-2113sa running Win7 HP  64bit.
I removed Acronis True Image and when I rebooted I got a BSOD at the point when the coloured balls should merge into one.
I thought OK, put the system repair disk into the DVD drive and boot up, but the drive is failing to read any recovery dosks. I think the drive has packed up as I haven't used it for some time.
Can I use any replacement drive in this model or must I get the same one again?
The drive light flickers as though it is reading data but it doesn't 'spool up' to speed and I don't get the 'press any key to load from DVD'.
The BSODs are a seperate issue which I think running a system repair will fix but I can't as the drive won't read data.
Is it possible to put the repair disk files onto a 4gb USB stick and if so, how do I do it?
    Thanks.

    Hi Peeps
I had exactly the same problem with my Macbook, again from the UK. Really weird though as would intermittantly read DVD film's which worked fine previously.
Well.... Took it to my local Apple store and saw a genius and anyway they replaced the super drive and logic board (surprised about the logic board!).
But just got it back today and the DVD drive is completely fubard so is being returned tomorrow to get this sorted!
Moral of the story, sounds like a drive or board problem. Will keep you updated when I get mine back

  • Auto CD Player won't read disk I just burned

I have a G5 iMac, about a month old. If I burn a CD, the CD reads on my PowerBook and wife's G4. However, it won't play in my car. This is puzzling because a friend burned me a disk of tunes, also using iTunes, and that played in my car with no problems.
Symptom: I insert the disk and the car's CD player thinks for a few seconds, sometimes longer, and then spits out the CD.
The tunes in question were purchased from the iTunes store. Does that make a difference?
    ??

ShepArt, thanks. Unfortunately, that's not the problem. I did have it set for Audio. I also did an on-line check with Apple. The agent claimed that the problem was probably the media, and that my car's player might not recognize any but certain kinds of CDs. I then bought some "music CDs," which Fry's insisted would work. No dice. The CD plays on other comptuers, but not in my car or in a boombox. I burned at 8X.

  • Power Mac G4 shows only screensaver image; won't read disks

My Power Mac G4 will no longer show the finder or any of my folders. It boots beyond the grey and blue screens to show a screensaver I'd chosen earlier, but doesn't show the finder or any of my folders. It will not read any of its original install disks, nor read the OS X Panther disks.
I don't know if its versions are current. It has no internet card, which has not been a problem until now as I also use a G5 that's on a cable modem.
I got this computer second-hand. It came with these disks:
Apple Hardware Test (Power Mac G4)
    Power Mac G4 Software Install
    Power Mac G4 Software Restore
    Power Mac G4 Developer Tools
Mac OS X Panther Install Disks 1, 2 and 3
I have tried installing them all from the screensaver mode, as well as from CD mode. Nothing has been forthcoming. Is my data still present? Does the OS X need to be installed, or has the system just stalled in the booting? I've rebooted a dozen or more times while working with the disks. Since I'm getting beyond the grey and blue screens, is this a sign of life?

    Hi t_orzechowski!
Have you found a resolution yet?
Have you ever run Repair Disk?
THESE ARE THE STEPS FOR USING DISK UTILITY TO REPAIR YOUR HD
1.Insert the System Install disk, Mac OS X CD-ROM disk, or Restore DVD disk, then restart the computer while holding the C key. Use the System disk, of the OS, that is currently installed.
2.Once started up from CD or DVD, on the Menubar at the top of the screen, choose Disk Utility from the Installer contextual menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3.Click the First Aid tab.
4.Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5.Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
6.Click Repair. If DU reports errors it has fixed, re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported.
7.Repeat steps 5 & 6, but select the Hard Drive this time. It's usually the first listed with the manufacturer's model number. Make note of the S.M.A.R.T. status.
8.When finished, select Quit Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
9.Select Quit Installer from the Installer menu.
10.In the resulting pop-up window, choose restart.
11.After the computer has restarted, you can eject the CD.

  • Disk drive won't read disks

    Hi there,
I've had my Mac Mini for several months, and starting fairly recently, it only reads about 1 out of 5 disks I put in on the first try. It accepts the disk and sounds as if the laser is about to move to read it, but then the lazer gets stuck. I can hear the motor working to try and move the lazer, but again, it seems to be jammed. After about 30 seconds of it trying to read the disk, it gives up and ejects the CD.
As a note, I've been able to read music CD's, burned CD's, and installation CD's for software before, but more and more frequently it doesn't read the disc.
Thanks for any and all help.

Hmm...not sure if this was the proper forum. Sorry if it isn't.

  • DVD Writer won't read disks

I have a problem with my DVD Writer in Windows 8.1 (64 bit)...after inserting disk (either blank or readab le), the computer hangs, and the only exit is to shut down the machine.  Device Manager   shows the unit as installed and working correctly.
I've tried all the following steps with no joy:
Updated, disabled and uninstalled driver (MS 6.3.9600.16384).
Tried all SATA ports and changed SATA data cable.
     Ran Windows DVD troubleshooter.
Ran MS Fix-it program.  It hangs computer after "Insert readable disk" .
Tried MS recommended registry hacks:  #3:  No upper or lower filters shown; #5: No help.
After this, I figured the fault must be in the DVD unit (a Lite-on) so I bought a new one (HP 1265d) and installed it.  Same problem... even after re-running the above steps!  Windows 8 installed OK months ago using the device,  and thats probably
the last time I used it for DVDs, so that pretty much rules out a System Restore.   I am now assuming that the problem will be found in:  (1) driver; (2) corrupted Registry; or (3) SATA ports on  the Motherboard (Gigabyte G41M-ES2L)
but have no idea how to proceed from here.  Would appreciate any help or ideas.

    Hi
It would be helpful if you included the optical drive model info (from Apple System Profiler), and complete your Mac profile; there are 6 different G4 models. Include what type of blank media, and whether the drive holds but does not mount the media, or if it ejects it.
applehistory.com can be helpful if you are unsure which flavour G4 you own.

  • Need to reinstall iWorks but my Superdrive won't read disk.

    Hi folks
I recently had a problem with 'NUmbers' not loading and after following the instructions of a very helpful forum member I have sorted out the problem. This, however, has thrown up another issue though and I wonder if anyone could help?
Since I installed Mountain Lion my Superdrive refuses to load most disks but as I hardly need it I don't feel inclined to spend time or money fixing it, however when I came to reinstall iWorks '09 from the disk - you guessed it - it would not load! I therefore had to downloadand a trial to see if I had fixed the problem.
My question is therefore, as I am the owner of a kosher iWorks '09 disk is there anyway I can gain access to the iWorks app in the Mac app store but without having to pay for it again?
By the way if anyone knows a way of sorting out my Superdrive I would be very grateful also ;o)
    Cheers Steve

The DVD version of iWork has no serial number and can't be upgraded to anything else.
If your Superdrive is broken, just buy an external USB2 DVD/CD drive from eBay. That is a Pioneer USB 3.0 BDR RW drive, but there are cheaper models.
I got a USB Bluray drive for a fraction of what Apple was going to charge me for their repair and as a bonus it reads DVDs twice as fast as well as reads/writes Bluray disks! Apple put a brake on their internal optical drives as a "fix" for something or other.
The speed of my external drive is nice but it does make one **** of a spinning noise.
    Peter
PS when you get to read your DVD make a disk image of it and store that on a drive somewhere as your backup installer.

  • Mini 2010 SuperDrive won't read disks

I have the 2010 Mac Mini Core 2 Duo edition with an optical drive.  I have had it replaced once through Future shop extended warranty, but again it is failing to play any disks.  I will take the disks in, make a few noises then after 15-20 secs, ejects them.  Am I fighting a never ending battle here each time I get the drive replaced?
    I'm running 10.9.4
Is there a common failure point with these models?  (hence maybe why apple decided to go without for 2011+?)
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Apple Computers: Troubleshooting the slot-loading SuperDrive
Yes the slot-loading drives are failure prone.
I replaced the the one in my 2009 Mini last year with an LG external drive.
The Apple USB external SuperDrive drive does not easily work with Minis that have internal drives. Commercial external ones are also less expensive.

  • My mac won't read disks and keeps ejecting them

Everytime I insert a disk in my Macbook Pro, it attempts to read them but seem to not be able to. Then after attempting it ejects them. I'm not sure what to do?

  • Computer won't read disks

My Mac will read any burned disk that ISN'T an audio one. For example, when I put in a disk containing just a bunch of jpegs, it is recognized and appears on my desktop. Even with blank disks, these are recognized as well.
But, when I insert a CD to open in itunes, nothing happens. It doesn't appear anywhere...not on my desktop, not in itunes....what's the deal? This is happening with ALL disks like this, whether I've burned them myself or if I'm putting in a CD I bought at the store.

There are two possibilities: 1) your computer's optical drive has a dirty lens or is beginning to die. 2) the DVDs we burn do not last forever, in fact some cheap media can seriously deteriorate in a year or less. So it might be that the discs you are trying to read are bad.
In your shoes I'd find a friend with a computer and see if those important DVDs can be read there. If so hit the local Radio Shack or other electronics store and get an optical drive lens cleaner and a box of high quality DVDs. If the lens cleaner works, make duplicates of your media. If it doesn't see if your friend will let you make copies while you wait for your new mail order external DVD burner to arrive.

  • Hard drive won't read Disk, Firewire or Disk Utility

Everything with my computer seems to work fine on start up. However when I insert a disk, attach a firewire drive or try to download an update it fails. When I go to disk utility or try Onxy to repair permissions the programs runs forever and never sees the hard drive. Any suggestions?

Hi! This sounds like logic board or hard drive problems. Try running the hardware test disc that came with your computer or that may be on the install disc. Tom

I am experiencing the same issue with a new external DVD burner, a Sony DRX-840U. When I load a CD into this external drive it appears in iTunes but when you go to import or play the CD iTunes indicates playing or importing for each individual track for just a moment. The end result is that nothing is ever imported or played. I am experiencing this on two different systems. One a notebook running Win2K and the other a desktop running XPpro. If I use the internal DVD drives on either of these systems everything work just fine. Yet I am able to use this new external DVD drive with every other application. For example Window Media Player has no problem playing or importing the same CD that iTunes fails on. The last person indicated that if one set the DVD drive in question to be the drive of choice under preferences>advanced>burning that all was ok. I my case this Sony external drive is the drive listed as the drive of choice for burning yet the issue still exists.
As this appears to be an issue that others are also experiencing help from Apple Tech Support would be greatly appreciated.

  • Bootcamp won't read windows installer disk

hey guys, I have a macbook pro, I just downloaded windows 7 from microsoft, I burned a dvd with the files and I partitioned my disk, but i can't install the windows because bootcamp won't read the disk. I get  the following message: the installer disk cannot be found. Insert your windows installer disk and wait a few minutes ti be recognized...
    What is wrong?

If it's an .iso, you need to open it in Disk Utility, then burn it from there. If you just put a bunch of files onto optical media, then it won't boot. You need to use something like Roxio Toast to burn a bootable disk from files. It knows what needs to be added and how the files should be arranged.
I've found that with Windows stuff, I'm better off using a Windows utilitiy that understands Windows booting. I use CDBurner XP. It works great and is free.
