Won't read my boot disk

Hello! Well last May I purchased a toshiba c675 and had to SEND IT BACK in October. Toshiba said it was reimaged....but yet here I am in April with a black screen and no boot. When my computer was returned to me in November I was smart enough to make a boot disc...but IT IS NOT DOING ANYTHing!! It keeps saying "insert 1st recovery media". I only have a boot disc...PLEASE HELP!!!

It sounds like that isn't recovery media.
On most models you can hold '0' (zero) with the computer turned off. Then press the power button while continuing to hold '0' until the recovery utlity starts.

  • Bootcamp won't read windows installer disk

hey guys, I have a macbook pro, I just downloaded windows 7 from microsoft, I burned a dvd with the files and I partitioned my disk, but i can't install the windows because bootcamp won't read the disk. I get  the following message: the installer disk cannot be found. Insert your windows installer disk and wait a few minutes ti be recognized...
    What is wrong?

If it's an .iso, you need to open it in Disk Utility, then burn it from there. If you just put a bunch of files onto optical media, then it won't boot. You need to use something like Roxio Toast to burn a bootable disk from files. It knows what needs to be added and how the files should be arranged.
I've found that with Windows stuff, I'm better off using a Windows utilitiy that understands Windows booting. I use CDBurner XP. It works great and is free.

  • OS 9 won't install from boot disk

    Hi,
I've got a imac G4 with a 400mh processor 80gb hard drive & 194mb ram. I'm running OS X 10.2.8 and I don't have OS 9 installed. I tried to install OS 9 of the boot disk that came with the computer but it failed. Any Ideas ???
    Daniel

    Hi, Daniel -
...to select another drive or do a clean install.
Provided you are booting to an OS 9 Install CD, or the Software Install CD that came with the machine, it is okay to do a Clean Install. A Clean Install of OS 9 removes nothing - it installs a brand new, 'clean' System Folder, a new set of standard utilities if they aren't present, renames the old System Folder (if there is one) to Previous System Folder, and little else.
Article #58176 - Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation
The concern over your description of your machine as an "iMac G4 400MHz" model is that the slowest iMac G4 is 700MHz.
To have an iMac at 400MHz, it would need to be a G3 model.
Perhaps it is not an iMac, but is a PowerMac instead - there indeed is a G4 400MHz AGP model in the PowerMac series.

  • Macbook Pro won't read windows OS disk?

Upgraded my MBP to a 500gig HD, Imaged the old to the new with carbon copy clone, everything work fine on Mac side, but when I try to reinstall windows VIA bootcamp it won't recognize the windows disk. Like it won't recognize the windows OS disk at all (no matter when I put it in). It's an OEM disk 32 bit vista or 7 (i have 2). The disks work in other machines and my MBP can see them from an external disk drive, but then bootcamp won't install them... I get a screen that goes from the apple, to a folder, to a circle with a line through it... The laptop read the Mac OS disk fine, other dvds, and cds fine. Any takers???

    Hi,
first: put your XP 64-bit CD as far away from your Mac as you can. Apples BootCamp does not support it
Second: I assume corectly that these are Retail or SystemBuilder XP discs, not some Recovery CDs or manufacturere-branded ones, right ?
Third: insert the 32-bit XP CD while in OSX and check with the Finder if it can be read there (checking for the 'usual' folders on it: i386, Support, etc and files: winip51.sp2 etc.).
Fourth: some people round here have successfully used a 'standard' DVD/CD-cleaner disc with their Macs.
Fifth: try making a 1:1-copy of your XP disc. You can use SimplyBurns in OSX for this.

  • DIsk Utility: Won't properly verify boot disk?

Has anyone else noticed this, or is there something wrong with my Mavericks install?
If I try to verify "Macintosh HD" in Disk Utility, i.e. my boot disk, the verfiy doesn't perform the last 2 steps and doesn't confirm that the disk is OK.
For a normal disk, it says this:
    Verifying volume “Data”
    Checking file system
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking extents overflow file.
    Checking catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking catalog hierarchy.
    Checking extended attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume Data appears to be OK.
But for my boot disk, all I get is:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking file system
    Performing live verification.
    Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    Checking catalog hierarchy.
    Checking extended attributes file.
    Then the verify stops.
    Anyone else noticed this?
Incidentally, I am MASSIVELY underwhelmed with Mavericks so far.  It seems full of bugs and glitches and is altogether worse than 10.8 so far.

Yes, it's a known issue and bug reports have been filed. If you check the log you'll see that the Verify actually completed.
You can file feedback here. The more who file the more chance it will get done.

  • Won't read Windows XP disk

I have partitioned my drive and am now attempting to install Windows XP. However, my computer does not read the Windows disk. The disk is an authentic version of Windows XP Home Edition. I had previously installed it on another computer to run in Parallels.
I have done a few cross tests to validate functionality of the hardware and the disk - The XP disk is recognized by the other Mac computer. The computer I am trying to make the installation on is able to read other CDs and DVDs.

    Hi and welcome to Discusions,
if you insert the XP CD while in OSX, is it recognized and accessable ?
If so, you can try to make a full bootable copy of the XP CD onto a CD-RW and then try this copy for installation.
Personally I recommend SimplyBurns http://simplyburns.berlios.de/ with its '1:1 Disc Copy' feature for that.
It seems to happen with some disc-drives (especially the ones in Macs) to have difficulties with the original Microsoft XP CDs (don't know why...).
    Good Luck

  • Both Windows and Mac OSX won't read/keep ejecting disks

I erased my harddrive and reinstalled Snow Leopard this way I could get Bootcamp up and running. After I reformatted the computer, I have been having serious issues with it reading any Windows CDs. The first issue was with the installation CD. My computer would take it in and spit it back out, it did this over and over. It was a Windows XP full installation CD. The same CD I have used when installing Bootcamp in the past. I also tried a Windows 7 full install CD and had the same issue. After many attempts, it finally read the XP CD and I had XP running. I installed the drivers and went about using XP. For the most part things felt alright, but I was still having issues with CDs. I would put most CDs in and it would just eject them, or sometimes eat them, and not eject them at all. Other times it told me some software CDs were blank, when I knew they weren't. The CDs worked in every other computer, but not in my machine. I figured I would get around it by using disk images all the time, but this has proven complicated and annoying.
Today I finally got the Vista upgrade CD to work. When in Vista I was still having CD problems, but then things got worse. Daemon Tools wouldn't work anymore and neither would Alcohol 120%. It seems like things just stopped working all of a sudden. The Windows 7 CD wouldn't read eother so I was stuck with a pretty useless partition and operating system.
I just erased my drive again and reinstalled OS X 10.6. I am still having the problem with CDs. It keeps spitting out the Windows CDs/Programs designed for Windows CDs or is telling me they are blank media. I am at a brick wall here. I really would like to get Windows up and running so I can run my important software. Does anyone know what could be the problem? I appreciate the help.

So, if he has a OS 9 bootable G4, do you think the external USB floppy would work under OS 9?
Also, if he upgrades the 7200 to OS 9, do you think he could install that drive into the G4 and boot from it? I think there were some options in earlier OS <9 that let you do a custom install for all computers, not just the target one, which is handy for an external drive that you might use to boot more than one comptuer from, but I guess that depends on the installation disk?
Networking is a good way to migrate the files over, but if you plan on retiring the 7200, why not take the hard drive out and put it in the G4, at least temporarily to copy stuff over.

  • Drives Burn, but won't read newly burned disk

I've got two sony super drives, they are burning seemingly ok, but when I eject the disk and put it back in the computer tells me I've inserted a blank disk.
I can see the data burned into the disk, so I know there's something on the disk, but what's going on with my drives? It's both drives, so that leads me to believe that it's a software issue, not a bad drive.

I have posted on another section, but here are my comments repeated.
My dual disk drive fails to read some of my backup DVDs, which is a irritating. I have used a DVD cleaner, by the way. They were burnt on the machine originally and have been read in the past by both drives. I fitted 2 drives for just this sort of eventuality – and to do 2 backups at the same time, so I don't believe it is drive failure. I can restart the machine and occasionally they will read, but often not. I reduced the speed of burn from x16 down to x12 to see if it made a difference, but that is fairly inconcusive. The disks are stored 2-up in individual crystal cases, so scratching from sleeves shouldn't be a problem.
The disks fortunately CAN be read on my wife's old iMac, so I can network the data across.
Interestingly, some of the DVDs used are unbranded (plain white for printing), but some are 'Imation' brand. I would note that 'Tesco' (supermarket brand) DVD+R disks appear to be satisfactory at recalling data, for the time being.
The conclusion I draw is that it is down to the quality of the disks that are used. Don't necessarily go for bargain spindles of unbranded disks for valuable backups, although I cannot definitely say that branded ('Imation' in my case) disks will guarantee your backup security.
Judging by the lack of input on this message board on this subject, this may not be a widespread problem, but I would be interested to know if there is a definitive fix out there or if anyone can comment.

  • IMac won't read software installer disk, can anyone help?

I have an old imac (grape 99-2000) it was equipped with ethernet and i was told to get an ethernet wireless bridge, however the software for the wireless bridge won't open with my current OS 10.1 operating system, is there certain software i need in order to be able to access this? Can anyone help? Thank you!

You don't need software at all and most manufactures don't bother with Apple compatible setup software. Instead search the manual for set up instructions for Mac operating systems. Basically you will be setting up your bridge by talking to it through a browser (Netscape, Explorer, etc.) by typing in an address to get to the bridge's internal menus.
    Which bridge device is it?

  • IMac won't read startup disk

Longstanding problem. Older iMac won't read the Leopard disk. I got around this by using my daughter's iBook in slave mode and then installing 10.5. Everything works but I can't start up with the disk to use disk utilities. It was suggested that I get a new ext dvd drive which I did. (Kanguru qs2)
I started it up and installed Office for Mac without a problem. Then I tried to use the 10.5 disk and it would not read it. I had a hard time getting the disk to eject. After it did eject I tried using some other disks including Office and none of them work now. Any ideas?

Sounds like your new drive broke.

  • No Boot Disk available

I made a boot disk of Windows 7 to install through Parallels 9, but accidentally installed it on my Mac through Boot Camp because I wasn't paying attention to the finder tabs I had open.  I did NOT go through installing Windows upon the reboot, but now whenever I restart, it goes straight to MS-DOS BOOTCAMP and reads "No Boot Disk Available."  I can Command + R, and it will take me to internet recovery.  When I go to Disk Utility, I can clearly see that my Hard Drive, and the Mac OS X Base System are still in tact and on the computer.  The layout of the screen on the left looks as such:
    251 GB APPLE SSD SD25...
          Macintosh HD
           BOOTCAMP
    disk1
        Mac OS X Base System
My question is how do I get it so it no longer boots the MS-DOS Boot Camp and simply starts up as a Mac like it did before?  I've tried ejecting the BOOTCAMP drive, but it merely goes back to "No Boot Disk Available" when I attempt to restart.  I'd rather not lose the data on my Hard Drive and I haven't used Time Machine in a few months and would prefer to avoid that.  All of my files on the hard drive are still in tact at the moment as I've checked through browsing.

go back into disc utility, select apple ssd, click on partition then highlight the bootcamp part of your drive, click the minus sign then click apply. after this drag the divider line down to the bottom, click apply
then reboot, it will now start up into osx as normal.
you are now free to reinstall windows again using bootcamp if you wish.

  • DVD drive won't read disks at boot

    I have a Paviliton DV6-2113sa running Win7 HP  64bit.
I removed Acronis True Image and when I rebooted I got a BSOD at the point when the coloured balls should merge into one.
I thought OK, put the system repair disk into the DVD drive and boot up, but the drive is failing to read any recovery dosks. I think the drive has packed up as I haven't used it for some time.
Can I use any replacement drive in this model or must I get the same one again?
The drive light flickers as though it is reading data but it doesn't 'spool up' to speed and I don't get the 'press any key to load from DVD'.
The BSODs are a seperate issue which I think running a system repair will fix but I can't as the drive won't read data.
Is it possible to put the repair disk files onto a 4gb USB stick and if so, how do I do it?
    Thanks.

    Hi Peeps
I had exactly the same problem with my Macbook, again from the UK. Really weird though as would intermittantly read DVD film's which worked fine previously.
Well.... Took it to my local Apple store and saw a genius and anyway they replaced the super drive and logic board (surprised about the logic board!).
But just got it back today and the DVD drive is completely fubard so is being returned tomorrow to get this sorted!
Moral of the story, sounds like a drive or board problem. Will keep you updated when I get mine back

I took the system file out of the system folder on os 9.2 can't boot to put file back in machine also has osx 10.2 but won't let me boot to either need os 9 compatible boot disk I think?

If the OS X 10.2 on the hard drive is/was bootable, try this -
Restart or boot, then immediately press the X key, keep it held down until you know the machine has started to boot using OS X. This is a hardware instruction to the Mac to boot using the first usable instance of OS X it finds.
Once booted to OS X, you should be able to move OS 9's System file into OS 9's System Folder.
Note - in general, unless you know for sure what you are doing and that the results are desired, do not relocate or rename files in OS 9's System Folder or in OS X's System or Library folders.

  • External 'boot disk' for G5 won't boot

First attempt was to make an OS 10.5.? boot disk from the installation DVD. The second attempt was to use Carbon Copy Cloner to make an exact duplicate of the internal Boot Macintosh HD disk. Both onto one of a pair of external 4Tb Iomega drives. Connection is Firewire 800 daisychain. The external drive in question is the last in the daisychain. The G5 has twin internal drives already and the G5 will boot happily from either. (One is 10.5.8, the second is 10.4.11/Classic.)
Both installations attempts on the #2 4Tb drive appeared to "work". The now CCC version is an exact copy of the main internal drive and is OS 10.5.8. 'Startup Disk' appears to recognise it as a system boot disk. I can select it for booting on restart but it fails to do so and eventually finds the main internal drive after some wait.
Holding down the Option key as you restart the machine brings up just the two choices of the two internal drives to start from - no external drive choice.
This all used to work just fine in the days of SCSI...
I'm presuming altering the order of the external drives on the Firewire chain won't make any difference?

I wonder if such a drive is just too big to boot a PPC Mac.
Hmm. Interesting thought. You have a good point.
    I just found this technote:
    *Secrets of the GPT*
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#technotes/tn2166/_index.html
It contains the following regarding the Apple Partition Map scheme:
APM is restricted to 32-bits worth of blocks. With a standard block size of 512 bytes, this translates to a maximum disk size of 2 TB.
In Disk Utility, if you again click on the upper icon as before, and look again at the lower right of the window, what does it say for "Total Capacity?" Does it report the full 4TB?
It reports the full size - strictly it reports 3.6Tb - ie well over 2Tb.
(I do have the hardware option of switching to twin 2Tb on these 4Tb Iomega drives and strictly, that is what is inside the physical housing. It's a matter of throwing some switches. Of course, I don't actually want 2Tb drives. )
    MacBook Pro (10.5.8) Power Mac G5
It might be of interest regarding the capability of the drive enclosure hardware to connect the drive to your MacBook Pro, repartition it as GUID (which will erase it), install OS X on it or clone the MBP to it, and then see if the MBP will boot from it.
Hmm. I don't think I want to do that as the MBP is an Intel machine and the G5 isn't. It won't solve the actual problem. (At least I can't see how it will.) Though I see what you are getting at.
It's probably worth a shot emailing Iomega, I guess.
