Won't really see a video card in the PCI slots

I have a G4 MDD 1.23 GHz. I have a 32 MB video card in the AGP slot, but I also have 2 PCI 128 MB video cards lying around.
Every time I try to throw a PCI video card in, though, I have problems. The image is only 640 x 480 grayscale, nothing else. I tried to change the settings, but those are the only options.
I have a 3DFX Voodoo 2 and a TwinTurbo 128. Do I need drivers? Does the MDD not support video cards in the PCI slots? What's wrong with this picture?

For what it's worth, here's a few quotes:

  • On-board sound card failing. Will BIOS let me add a sound card into the PCIE slot?

On-board sound card failing, consistently locking everything, (yes, I updated all drivers, codecs) so want to put in new sound card. Will the BIOS let me add a sound card into the PCIE slot? (of course after disabling the ReakTek onboard sound) I don't see an option to choose PCI or PCI-E in the setup screen (F10 at boot) for audio.

  • X58 PRO won't boot (memory or video card issue???)

    Hi all,
this is my first message here.
I have recently bought a X58 PRO motherboard to which I have connected the following devices: one HD, one DVD, the CPU (i7 950), one Video Card (GeForce 6600 pci-express) and three DDR3 modules from Corsair (named CMT6GX3M3A2000C8). According to Corsair website the modules CMT6GX3M3A2000C8 run on thie X58 PRO.
I have turned on the system, but the screen remains black and the motherboard issues an intermittent buzz sound.
    Besides:
The led close to the pci-express (where the video card is connected) is on.
The 5 CPU leds are all turned on.
The led close to the memory socket is off.
As far as I know, usually the intermittent buzz means that the motherboard doesn't recognize either the RAM or the video card, but I don't know if the buzz is different case by case (can be buzz be different according to the issue?) and in the manual I didn't find a troubleshotting chapter.
Is there a way which allow me to better identify where the issue would be (in memory or in Video Card... or something else)?
I have not tested neither the memory nor the video card on another system, thus I don't know if one of them is faulty.
    Can anyone please help me?
    many thanks in advance!

    Do a CMOS clear>>Clear CMOS Guide<<
Only insert one mem module. Check all your power connections to the board/s again that they are secure. You may want to reseat your CPU and check carefully that all the contact pads on the CPU do have imprints.
Ok, I'll try it this evening!
In the meanwhile, I thank you.

  • Dual video card on the m3985

I'm planing to upgrade my m3958 to it's limits  for 3d rendering. This is the present rig. Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz (8 CPUs), ~3.4GHzMemory: 8GB GPU : NVIDIA Quadro K2000    * Really i dont see much difference with this card. Though it is rated amongs the best. I dont know why* So what can i really add to make this machine more powerfull for 3d rendering. Thanks

More information on the Video Card integration problem, but no success yet.
I plugged in the second monitor; an Acer AL2223W LCD connected to one of the ports on the EVGA GeForce GT 610 card, to see if it would be recognized. It displays "No Signal" when turned on.
Did a search on the computer and found the AMD VISION Engine Control Center. That had a place to search for video equipment and the only thing it would find is the Samsung 213T.
I verified that the fan on the card is running so the card is getting power via the PCI-E slot.
The 2 outputs on the video card and the receptacle on the Acer are DVI-I dual link configuration with 24 pins + 4 pins at the flat pin for analog signals. The Samsung has a DVI-D dual link receptacle (24 pins).
The cable is DVI-D Single Link (18 pins + the flat pin). When I get another cable it will be DVI-D Dual Link.
It seems that the  EVGA GeForce GT 610 video card is not being recognized by the mother board or not putting out a signal.
There was no driver disk with either the video card or the computer.
Power supply is 430 Watts and the card specs say the PS should be at least 300 Watts.
Do I need to do something with the BIOS or get a driver or setup disk for the board or card or do something with a jumper on the MB?
Do I need to get the DVI-D Dual Link cable to get the signal from the Video Card to the Monitor?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Better video cards for the new 8-core Mac Pro...?

I don't know a ton about video cards. I did some research and the internet says that the Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 video card is the best card out right now. Will it work in the 8-core macpro? If not, or if it's not the best, what is the best video card that will work in the 8-core macpro?
    P.S.
Does anyone know how to tell exactly whether a video card is better from another? I mean I can guess a video card at 1792MB is going to be better then one at 512MB, but I've also heard that, for example, the ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB is better then the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512MB, and apple charges more for it so it probably is better, but all that tells me is the name of the cards, and that they are both at 512MB, so from that without any other information I would assume they're exactly the same just made by different companies, but there must be some other details that would explain why it's better right? Thanks in advance

Well I found out the Quadro FX 4800 works on it, that looks pretty good.
It's a good card, but it has a different application focus.
    What applications do you use?
Answering that helps determine what the best card is.
The 5800 is better though, will it work?
    Better, how?
    The spec's read better?
    How about real world performance?
    Benchmarks?
They are very similar in shape and such.
Shape has little to do with anything.
    The ROM is the key.
If the card is not produced as "OS X compatible", it does not have Mac ROM and cannot be used.
If there is a Mac edition that is similar (same GPU series, similar architecture) the ROM may be flashed to Mac ROM.
Especially in Geforce cards, the ability to edit ROMs and even write portions of the ROM is necessary to be able to flash a card.
    Even then, no guarantees.
Often a port on a flashed card won't work after flashing.
Seems the 5800 has a 10 bit display port, so if the card were flashable, the display port wouldn't work.
The ROM chip size of a card is also of concern.
Many cards require either a new, larger ROM chip to accept the Mac ROM (soldering), or, require a hacked, "reduced" ROM to be written to allow flash.
Invariably, there will be some feature loss with a reduced ROM, but a good hacker usually gets rid of superfluous stuff.
Cards with more VRAM than the Mac counterpart will often times lose the extra VRAM- it won't be read by OS X.
Then there is the EFI question, which often creates a final stumbling block for converting a card.
There are many pioneers who flash cards.
If a card is flashable, it has already been done.
The Quadro 4500, 4800, and 5600 have all been worked out.
As of yet, the 5800 hasn't been sussed out for flash (as far as I can find).
    Flashing the card is easy.
Finding a physically compatible card and a compatible ROM are the hard parts.
The two best retail cards for the Mac Pro are the Geforce GTX 285 and the Radeon HD 4870.

  • Upgrading Video Card in the iMac

I've been very confused by what I have read on so many discussion groups. Is the video card in the 2.8 Mhz, duo core, Intel based iMac upgradeable? I know there is a standard plug in card, MXM, but am not sure if the 2400 ATI card I have in the iMac can be upgraded. I am sure it is a chore to access the innards of the iMac.

YC73, you can familiarize yourself with Apple's policies;Sales and Refund Policy. The link is to the US online store, but the policy is consistent, allowing for local laws, throughout the world.
As you can see from the policy, a built to order iMac is not returnable in the first 14 days, as a standard model would be. It is my understanding that something as simple as a RAM upgrade makes the Mac BTO.
As a BTO, the Mac is subject to the Apple Manufacturer's Warranty. It is repaired or replaced at Apple's discretion. It is reported by other's in the forums with experience, that Apple traditionally replaces a machine if it is repaired three times.
I hope this answers your question.

  • What video cards will the p7-1423w support?

I would like to upgrade my video graphics to something that will support Witcher 2.  I picked up a video card but then realized the power consumption is too great for this pc.  Any suggestions on what card I can get that will support this type of graphics?  (It is a windows 8 machine if that makes any difference.)
    Thanks!

    Hello Leach69,
There are two things to consider when purchasing a video card. The slots that are available in your computer and the power supply that is already in the computer. If you are looking to play modern games you are going to need a good video card, as you already know. I would suggest that you also consider upgrading your power supply to something that provides more power so that you can use that card that does use more power consumption.
Upgrading the power supply is also going to give you the freedom to do other upgrades in the future if you choose to do so. The power supply that is currently in your computer is only 300w from what I can tell, this means you are going to be extremely limited.
I'd suggest upgrading your power supply to something around a 550w - 600w then you can get just about any video card you want as long as you have the slot for it.

  • CPU rendering why can't a Video Card do the job?

I started noticing that the flash player rely on a processor
more than a graphic card, I kind of was hoping that someday that
flash would work off from video card as a rendering engine. Though
right now flash player playing flash files seems like it puts too
much stress on a processor for rendering flash I mean simply why
can't the video card do the work when processor takes up like 90%
of the job? and do the job more smoother? Just an idea I'm putting
    out for adobe staff members.

  • Why cant I see BOTH video tracks at the same time?

I read all the manuals,I swear.
I make film collage and want to do multiple layer exposures of different clips.
So far I just have two video tracks-
Why cant I see BOTH video tracks at the same time,I mean each track will create another layer,or exposure that will both play back viewable simultaneously right ?Or would that be considered "layering"?
Does this have anything to do with the source vs. destination thing ?

FCE plays back video tracks in a "top-down" manner: that is what's on track 3 obscures what's on track 2 which obscures what's on track 1. You can control scale, position and opacity of each clip on each track so that you can get the layering you seem to be after.

  • Nvidia 8800GT video card in the First Generation Mac Pro

This message is a bit of advice if you install the new Nvidia 8800GT video card in the first generation Mac Pro. The advice is keep your old video card. The old video card will be needed if you ever need to reinstall the OS X operating system. This new card needs the video drivers (kernel extensions) that are in OS X leopard 10.5.2 or later. With this video card installed, both the OS X original installation disk that came with this computer and the OS X leopard upgrade disks will cause a kernel panic when booted up. This is because they do not contain the kernel extensions needed for this video card. There is a question. Does anyone know how to create and burn a reinstallation DVD with OS X leopard version 10.5.2 on it? This would help solve this reinstallation problem

this is a advisory to whom it may concern
here my latest reply from a apple product specialist how was very good and helpful but only
give me this to my upgrade answer !
i want to upgrade my graphic card to 8800 and run tiger on my 1st gen macpro
    here it goes:
"This article indicates what cards are supported in what machines: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305346
Your Mac Pro is the first generation, and did not have PCI-Express 2.0 slot like the current generation does have.
Unfortunately, we don't foresee the release of any drivers for the 10.4 OS on this machine.
In regards to the second issue, we also don't support two video cards in two slots, using a different one for eash OS, there is no supported way to do this."
"Unfortunately, the latest version of the Mac Pro will not run Tiger, as it was manufactured after the release of Leopard, therefore the drivers for the machines hardware will not be available on Tiger."
hope thats cleared some ones Q.
    kindly

  • HT2452 I accidently pushed a photo card into the CD slot and can't get it out. Any suggestions

I accidently pushed a photo/video card into my CD slot and can't get it out. Any suggestions?

If you can Mark, take your iMac to an Apple Store or Apple certified repair provider.
IMHO, better to let Apple take care of this then inserting anything else in the slot that may damge the optical drive.

  • Graphics card on secondary PCIe slot PUE 975X

I changed my graphics card slot to the secondary PCI express slot. But now none of my operating systems will boot correctly with the nvidia graphics driver. Only when set on failsafe mode or vesa drivers (linux), is the only way to render the desktop environment. Is there any way to have my graphics card on the 2nd slot and for it to work correctly? I am using a Nvidia Geforce 6800GS.

You are right. Using the 975X PUE, you can use 2 nVidia cards in the PCIe 16X slots(they will run at 8x) and should be able to be used with 3 monitors.  The 2 slots can be used in a crossfire configuration(2 ATI cards);ATI's answer to SLI. Using nVidia cards, you should be able to use 2 PCIe cards and get the 3 monitors since they obviously would not be in crossfire(and not in SLI since the board can not do SLI). Your PCI card is an ATI chipset and the PCIe card is nVidia. Since you have both nVidia and ATI drivers installed and being used, I think you maybe getting a conflict (which is likely causing the issue).  If you had PCI nVidia card, it might work.
When cards are in Crossfire or in SLI mode, only 2 monitors will be supported. If SLI or Crossfire is disabled, you should be able to get up to 4 monitors.  See if you can borrow your friends nVidia card and try it out. I would advise you to uninstall any ATI drivers.  You are going to need an additional nVidia card(PCIe or PCI).

Any suggestions on how I can get my SD card out of the CD slot.  I accidentally put it in and tried to get it with tweezers but that only pushed it in further.

Thanks for replying.  I did a search to see if anyone else was dumb enough to stick their card in the wrong slot and I saw a post to turn the computer on it's side and shake.  I did and it came out just enough for me to grab. I must say I love Apple just because someone is always willing to help me out if they can.  Thanks for responding back and hope you have a great night.  I am back up and running
