Won't Recognize Blank CD's

I'm having a problem with my G4 not recognizing blank CD's. When I insert a blank disk it just spits it back out a few seconds later. However, it will read a burned CD just fine. I've looked through the system prefrences and changed the "when you insert a blank cd" options to "open a finder folder" and it didn't help. Any suggestions?

Here's a link to some info on that drive:
http://www.welovemacs.com/lfd211a.html
It's the original drive for that machine, meaning it's at least 6
years old. My guess is that it has just died. The symptom is one
consistent with that, as is the age of the drive. A replacement will
run you about $40 and will burn and read much faster. The usual
recommendations are to check New Egg if you want a wide variety
of drives to choose from :
http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=5&name=CD-DVD-Burners
or Other World Computing if you just want something you are sure will work
with your machine:
http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/optical-drives/superdrives/
The Pioneer 112 is widely recommended in this forum and should work
in your G4, although not quite at the max speeds the drive is capable of.
Still, much faster than what you have. If you need any installation help there
are a number of tutorials (some on the OWC site) or you can post for help.

The model number is A1054, machine model powerbook 6.5. 12 inch G4 30 gig 1,2 GHZ 512 MB with DVD/CD-RW drive. This wil not recognize blank DVDs or CDs. It reads awhile and ther rejects them. The preferences are set up to ask what I want done to the disk. It will read and mount recorded CDs.
    I just got this computer,

    Welcome to the discussions.
Go up to your Apple upper left and click it and when the box opens Choose System Preferences, and when that opens choose CD-DVD and when it opens, take your time and go through here and choose the options you want for CD and DVD's WHat do you want to happen for both Blank media as well as media with copy on them and what you want to open to read them,
Generally with DVD Movies you want your Player to open.
Blank DVD's you will want any combination of programs to open depending on what you want to do, from iDVD or Disk Utility to make copies.
The same steps must be done with CD's as well.
    Cheers Don

  • Burner won't recognize blank dvd

    Hi,
I have an old cd/dvd burner I bought from best buy years ago.  Tried burning a dvd and it wouldn't recognize blank dvd..it keeps saying "please insert dvd" even though there's one in the drive.  It burns CD just fine.  Plays DVD just fine.  I have tried using SEVERAL other burning programs and still doesnt work.  Please help.
Also uninstalled and reinstalled the drive several times...going crazy here.

Just to make sure, are you SURE it's a cd AND dvd burner? There are drives out there(I mention this since you said years ago) that were CD burners, with the DVD ROM feather.
If you like my post, or solution to your issue/question, go ahead and click on the little star by my name and/or accept the post as the Solution. It makes me happy.
I'm NOT an employee of Best Buy, or Geek Squad, though I did work as an Agent for a year 5 years ago. None of my posts are to be taken as the official stance that Best Buy will take on your situation. My advice is just that, advice.
Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • Computer won't recognize blank CD-R's

I stick a blank CD (tried many different makers) into my Combo Drive slot. It takes too long to recognize, then when it does, it thinks that the CD has a song on it (usually Blue Cantrell). But they're completely blank, according to every other computer I try.
This all happened when I upgraded to iTunes 5.
In fact, my Finder won't even recognize the blank CD-R's half of the time. My computer recognizes other CD-ROM's and DVD's just fine!
    Am I going crazy?

I just had the same problem two days ago. Everything was fine before I installed Roxio Toast. Now, it's hard for me to say what is the problem exactly because I deleted Roxio with another bunch of preferences at the same time. I did not reinstall it because I don't need it so I don't know if it was the problem.
Hopefully this may help you, if you have Roxio, I suggest you see if it recognizes the CD-R. I've deleted: desktop preferences and every other preferences linked to Roxio Toast Platinum and the other programs it installed: spin doctor etc. You can try this first and reboot your computer. Goodluck!

  • DVD Writer won't recognize Blank DVD (Imation)

    Hi
I have bundle blank DVD brand Imation but unfortunately my internal or external dvd writer would not recognize the disc. I have tried several times using Toast Titanium 6 and when i put the blank disc it says 'please put a blank disc. In fact, the disc i haven't use at all. Does it cause of my firmware or other related problem. Please help me. Thank you.

    Hi M Faza-
Since it is two different drives the first step is to try a different brand of discs.
Are the discs compatible? Did you but dual layer discs when in fact you have a single-layer burner? Are you putting the disc into the drive with the correct side down?

  • Won't recognize blank CD

I inserted a blank CD into the drive and it won't appear on the desktop so I can't eject it either. F12 does nothing. It didn't make any unusual noises, either. Not showing in Finder windows. Help?

    Hi
Here is a link to Apples document on how to eject a disc when all else fails.

The other option to try is to reset the PRAM.

  • My BD-ROM drive won't recognize blank Verbatim BD-R

are there some brands that work?

Will the drive recognize CDs,DVDs and a commerical blu-ray disk?  What model PC and Blu-ray drive are you using?  What application program are you using?
Verbatim is known for quality so I am surprised that your blu-ray drive has issues with a blank media.

Hi, My 17" G4 Powerbook recently stopped recognizing blank media when I insert them, there's some whirring noises for about a minute and then it spits them back with no dialogue whatsoever. Please help.

  • Superdrive won't recognize blank DVDs

This problem sounds similar to several I've seen here, but appears to be different, hence a new topic.
My PB has been in to Apple for repairs "several" times, and has multiple logic boards replaced and the DVD drive replaced at least 2x in the past 12 months.
I have the CD and DVD prefs both set to "ask". CD media immediately pops up the "You inserted a blank CD." dialog, so I know the drive is online and working. CDs with content load and run fine.
DVDs do not. Some DVDs burned on my 15" iMac read fine, while others get ejected or have read errors. Trying to burn off my nearly full internal disk to data DVDs, I've tried Disk Utility and Toast, and it doesn't matter. I get the same result. The program asks for a writable DVD; I insert a blank DVD; The drive churns for awhile; I hear a beep every so often while it is churning; The DVD is ejected without ever being seen by the Finder, Disk Utility or Toast.
I hadn't tried to burn a DVD since it last came from the shop, so I do not know if this specific drive ever worked for burning, but previous drives all worked fine. The fact that the DVDs never register anywhere I can see before getting ejected is just weird.
Is there some software config problem here, or should I just take the PB back to Apple and say, it doesn't work. Help. This is pretty frustrating.
It's not the DVD media, because it works fine in the iMac, and my other PB.
    PB Ti G4 1Ghz 10.4.7 512MB/ 15" iMac G4 800Mhz 10.3.9 256MB   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Although, since when has a DVD that was rated for a higher speed NOT been able to be burned at a slower/lower speed?
Since always, if the data layer in the disc is sufficiently different from what the drive expects. In a high-speed drive, a disc with a high speed rating can be burned at any speed within the drive's range, often including very low speeds. But in a low-speed burner, high-speed media may not be usable at any speed, because its data layer is very different from what the drive was designed to work with. You may not be able to see the difference easily, but the drive does, and rejects the disc thinking it's defective.
Back before DVD drives and media were common, this problem arose all the time with people trying to read early CD-RW discs in the CD-ROM drives of older Macs: it couldn't be done. When the speed ratings of CD-R media skyrocketed to 48x and 52x, some CD-ROM drives couldn't read the high-speed CD-R media either, though that problem was less common.
When optical drives generally cost upwards of $200-250, it was hard to tell anyone that the simplest solution was to replace the outmoded drive with something newer and more capable. Now that you can buy a slot-loading high-speed dual-layer DVD burner with all the bells and whistles for under $100, it behooves anyone who can use those capabilities to go ahead and get one. As for me, I've never tried to burn a DVD in my UJ-815, and now that slow media are almost impossible to find, I probably never will. If I decide to burn more than one or two DVDs sometime, I'll replace my drive. You might save yourself some hassle by doing the same.
As for -RW media, I never bother with it: it's way overpriced and too often has problems. I've always had good luck with the cheapest CD-R discs on sale at Costco, Staples, etc. for about 15 cents apiece in large packages. I occasionally burn an archival disc using high-priced 200-year Delkin or MAM-A media, but for the most part, cheapies serve me fine.

  • Won't recognize blank DVD

I have a Powerbook with the new dual-layer Superdrive (Matshita DVD-R UJ-846). Blank DVDs are not recorgnized. I am inserting single-layer, 4.7 Gb discs; they don't show up on the desktop, in Finder window sidebars, etc. The lower area of Disk Utility shows this when a blank disc is in the drive:
         Disk Description :     MATSHITADVD-R UJ-846     Total Capacity :     0 Bytes
Connection Bus :     ATA     Write Ability :     Read Only (DVD-R)
         Connection Type :     Internal     Capabilities :     CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW
         Connection ID :     Device 1
Note the statement "Write Ability :     Read Only (DVD-R)".
I am using Office depot 8x DVD-R media. http://www.apple.com/powerbook/superdrive.html claims this speed is supported.
    CD-RWs work fine.

I had this problem as well; it really confused me until I figured out how to change the default behavior as I had found documentation online suggesting that it would default to prompting me what to do (mine would open iDVD by default but wouldn't mount the disk).
If I open in finder the disk is mounted (of course) but I get similar behavior in Disk Utility. I can drag files to the disk to burn but Disk Utility still sees it as read-only. I'm curious if this behavior changed for you or if you're just able to use other products and thus haven't checked Disk Utility?
I'm using DVD+R media, other than that this is the same issue.

  • When trying to burn a playlist to a blank CD, iTunes 10.3.1 won't recognize the blank CD I've inserted (Verbatim CD-R). I've burned using these CDs before, this is a recent problem. Not the burner, as I can burn using Toast. iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

When trying to burn a playlist to a blank CD, iTunes 10.3.1 won't recognize the blank CD I've inserted (Verbatim CD-R). I've burned using these CDs before, this is a recent problem. Not the burner, as I can burn using Toast. iMac with Snow Leopard 10.6.8

What kind of CD are you burning (Audio or MP3)?
If you're burning an MP3 CD, the songs must already
    be in mp3 format.
If not, iTunes will tell you that you have no songs
    in the playlist.
    M
I was making an audio cd. But I have since found out what the problem was. The files in my PLAYLIST I converted to aiff, since they were SDll files (I thought they were similar to AIFF, and they PLAY on Itunes...just won't burn.) When I selected the songs in the playlist and converted them...I thought all those files were converted, They were not. The converted files went into my LIBRARY, even tho I selected the ones in the playlist...and once I exchanged the SDll versions of the songs in my playlist. THEN they burned fine...but still...it's confusing..you say convert..it says it's been converted..and what they don't say is it's not been converted inside the playlist...where I had selected the songs...It just ADDED aiff versions..but only in the library...Anyway, that's what happened. But it's strange that it PLAYS SDll but won't burn them....and you'd think, logically..the ones you selected would change...but they don't. Playlists are mainly pointers to the actual files I guess...a sort of Alias..
At least it works now. But it's sad that the latest itunes does more, but also does LESS...as I used to be able to burn SDll files. Now I'll have to convert all my files to AIFF, and mp3's as I assume my ipod video won't play anything but mp3's?

  • DVR-110D wont recognize blank media

Hi all, I just bought a dual core 2.0 machine and when I try to burn a disc with it, it won't recognize any blank media, either cd-r or dvd-r.
I put the blank in the tray and close it, and the machine seems to be trying to read the disc to figure out what it is, but after approx 60 seconds, the tray opens and i get a message saying to "insert a recordable disc"
The drive WILL read cds and dvds.
Here is the system profile description of the drive and my Mac:

I had the same issues, although mine recognised blank cd-r but not blank dvd-r and previously burned dvds. Called up AppleCare and found out that it may be a faulty drive, however, I didn't want to waste my time bringing the machine to the AppleStore for a replacement, so I just bought another dvd drive and replaced the old one. Sorry if this isn't helpful, but you may want to try other different kind of media before jumping into any conclusion.

  • DVD Burner won't recognize discs

I recently installed an lg gsa-4166b dual layer dvd burner to my emac and for some reason it won't recognize cds or dvds. Whenever I try to burn anything and put in a blank disc I get the message "no disk inserted". I'm running Mac OSX 10.4.11 and even installed the PatchBurn utility, but still no luck. Can someone help me?

Oh really? Now that is interesting, because in fact I also have a Western Digital MyBook Pro external HD. Actually 2. They worked fine until the last month or so, and one of them had a bad disc so I had to have it replaced on warranty. Now the other one is acting strange -- won't mount. WD had me upgrade the firmware and reinstall the latest drivers. But it's still not acting right.
And you are also correct about the disc playing. Normal DVD's, CD's and CD-ROMs play fine. It's just blank CD-R's etc that come up as "unreadable."
I bought these two WD MyBook Pro 1 TB drives on 10/20/2007 however, and I don't recall that I had a disc burning problem that long ago. Maybe it's been that long since I burned a disc? I'm not sure...
Incidentally I've had another problem for a really long time, which is a very long Mac OS startup. I am not sure when it started but it might have been about the time I bought these drives and installed the software. See threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1765645&tstart=0
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1880557&tstart=0
Yesterday two things happened. One, Apple sent through another automatic update requiring a reboot, but I didn't catch what it was. Two, WD had me upgrade the drive firmware and software drivers. Suddenly my bootup problem has gone away. So the question is, was it Apple's update or WD's firmware upgrade?
And lo and behold, I just entered one of the same blank Fujifilm CD-R discs and it mounts without a problem. I can now burn discs again. I have a feeling the WD firmware upgrade fixed a lot.
Yeesh! I think I shall be buying drives from someone else in the future.
Thanks for this very insightful tip.

  • Won't recognize inserted disks

The drive in my black MacBook won't recognize an inserted CD or DVD unless it's blank. If it's blank, it asks what I want to do, but if it's a data disc of any kind - for example, the Snow Leopard install DVD - the drive takes it but as far as the OS is concerned, there's no disc in the drive.
Once I go to restart the computer, however, it sees the disk and mounts it.
    Any clues?

Hi PWolves04, the fix bobapcoed described probably won't help you because your computer still "sees" your CD drive--it just doesn't read the disks you insert. The fix makes your computer see your drive again when it has completely disappeared from "My Computer". Speaking from personal experience (I've had to replace three CD/DVD-Rom drives over the years) one of the first signs that they're dying is the inability to recognize and read disks.
If you want to try the "Fix" before you move onto other troubleshooting avenues, here is a link to one thread that discusses it:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1457169?
I recommend that you search the Importing and Burning Category for entries by "toonz" for more information if you really think this will help.
