Won't recognize camera

Hi everyone,
I haven't used my Final Cut Express in a few months. I just connected my camera but it won't recognize it. I entered the program but clicking continue at the beginning so I could maybe capture video that way but when I click capture it closes on its own. iMovie recognizes my camera fine but I just can't get FCE to work. I also tried deleting preferences as suggested in another post but nothing's working. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

Assuming you haven't updated OS-X or QT since the last time you used FCE, here's what I would try first -
Shut down your Mac and disconnect all external FW devices. Then restart & log on. Then connect your camera & turn it on in VCR mode. Then start FCE. See if it works.
If not, I would create a new user account (with admin privileges by the way), shut down the machine again & restart all over as above. Log in to the new account. Connect your camera & turn it on. Start FCE and see if it recognizes the camera. If it works, then something is awry in your original user account, not FCE or QT. I'd trash FCE prefs in the original user account, check the FCE settings and go from there.
If it still doesn't work in the new user account, then I'd look closer at FCE and QT.
By the way, did you add any new FW devices since the last time you used FCE & are they connected at the same time as your camera?

    Hi G-Man,
It's probably something in the Preferences folder; Users/herusername/Library/Preferences. Start by removing com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist and trying again. If that doesn't do it drag the entire Preference folder to the desktop, log out and back in. Launch it again and if it works you can either reset preferences for all System Preferences and apps or drag the preferences files a group at a time back to the new Preference folder in Library and test Image Capture each time. That way you can narrow it down to the one offending preference file.

  • Updated iphoto won't recognize camera

Just a note to Apple, your latest Iphoto update (7.1.3) won't recognize my digital camera anymore. I have an Imac and a MacBook with the latest iphoto installed. I had one version updated, the other not. The updated version will open Iphoto with the camera connected, but won't show the camera or recognize it. I tried the same camera with the previous version of Iphoto and it worked, then I updated it to the 7.1.3 on the MacBook and have the exact same results.
I've tried all the work-arounds from previous threads. The only thing that works is using image capture to download photos and then import them into Iphoto. It used to work....any chance you'll fix it to work again?

  • MacBook Won't recognize cameras

I just upgraded to a MacBook Pro Retina 15 with Mavericks 10.9.5. Everything is freshly updated and no other performance issues with the new machine.
The computer won't recognize either of my cameras, neither a Nikon Coolpix S8100 nor my new Nikon D810 when connected via the USB cable.
No program will recognize the cameras being connected: not iPhoto, Nikon ViewNX2, nor Image Capture---all three latest versions. I have tried selecting  the preferences to have either iPhoto or View NX2 open when the camera is connected but it still doesn't work.
I can take the SD card out of the Coolpix and the MBP will read it in the built in card reader and I can manually drag files into both iPhoto and ViewNX2. I don't have a flash card reader for the Nikon D810.
My two drives for backups and photo storage connect and run perfectly
I had no problem with my old MBP 15 running Snow Leopard recognizing both cameras.
    Anyone else had this problem?

So you're essentially trying to install the XP operating system on your Mac?
You first need to install Boot Camp or Parallels and partition your drive, allowing for there to be a drive to install windows on.
During that partitioning process, it eventually prompts to insert the installation disc.

  • Replaced hard drive and now iPhoto won't recognize camera

I have been using iPhoto 4.0 with my Nikon Coolpix 775 for years with great success. My hard drive needed replacing and I have lost so, so much. Now iPhoto won't recognize my camera, and I can't import. Also, it won't import the hundreds of photos I had backed up on my external drive. "Don't contain valid information" or whatever that message is. I just got a download of Nikon View 6.2.1 on the manuf. website, but that didn't seem to help. What setting am I supposed to change?
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)   iPhoto 4.0.3

Sounds like you're describing two problems...
    1. iPhoto won't recognize my camera, and I can't import -- Open iPhoto Help and search on the word "camera". Seems like about the fourth item returned to tell you how to have iPhoto open when you connect your camera. If you have not imported any pictures to this library yet, then solve problem 2 before tackling this issue (so you don't have to contend with combining two photo libraries).
    2. it won't import the hundreds of photos I had backed up on my external drive -- most likely cause is that the external drive is not formatted as a "Mac OS Extended" drive. If you backed up by copying the iPhoto Library folder in its entirety, you might try just dragging it back into your Pictures folder (you may need to rename the existing iPhoto Library first if there's one already there with pictures you treasure). After the move, try starting iPhoto and see if it opens to the photos you had backed up.
If that doesn't work, come back and we'll go to plan "B".

  • IMovie won't recognize Camera in my New iMac

Hello, Just hit the "camera" icon in iMovie and it says "No Camera Connected  To import video, please connect a camera." Why won't it recognize my internal camera so that I can record myself while sitting at my computer?

  • JVC- GR-D72   Won't recognize Camera

OK.. I admit, It has been awhile since I have had a mac. I got my new iMac about a month ago, and I can't get it to recognize my camera (JVC GR-D72). I don't have the books for the camera anymore, but the software that did come with it isn't even executable when I put it in. It indicates that it is for Windows or Mac, but the Mac won't do anything, not that I even want to use the software, but I thought maybe it would help the machine to recognize the camera. Stupid question.. but does it need to be connected via firewire??? USB ok?? again ... I had an outdated computer previously so I never went to the computer to put my videos on..... any help is greatly appreciated

    Daddio,
    Welcome to the discussions!
You'll need to use a 4 to 6 pin FireWire cable to connect your camera to the computer. USB won't work.
Chances are your camera only came with a USB cable so you'll have to buy the FireWire cable.
You can put whatever software came with the camera in a drawer. You won't need it.

  • IPhoto suddenly won't recognize camera

I've been importing from my camera all day because I'm making a claymation short but it has stopped recognizing it for no apparent reason. It's a jvc everio hd camera, it still shows up in the finder but iphoto doesn't say anything. I haven't changed any of my settings, so I don't understand why it stopped working. image capture doesn't recognize it either. could I imported have too many photos? I don't want to start deleting things until I've finished and the piece is safely on a dvd, just in case something goes awry with imovie.
    Thanks

Sometimes it is the answer - even on a Mac

  • IPhoto won't recognize camera for new user

I recently set up a user account for my daughter with "Some Limits" selected. She has access to almost all apps, including iPhoto 4.03. When she connects our Canon PowerShot SD100 camera neither iPhoto nor Image Capture recognize it. When I'm logged in as an administrator the camera is recognized and works fine with both apps. The iPhoto Library is in the Hard Drive\Users\Shared folder. "Look for Shared Photos" and "Share Entire Library" preferences are selected in iPhoto in both my daughter's and my admin accounts. How can I get iPhoto to recognize the camera when my daughter is logged in?

The steps outlined in the article fixed the problem
for both Image Capture and iPhoto. Thanks - never

Neither would I. Remembered a problem with a limited account similar to this. Then looked it up in SUPPORT for iPhoto

  • Won't recognize cameras

I bought an iMac yesterday. iPhoto was installed. Yesterday iPhoto recognized the cameras and imported pictures. Today I can't get iPhoto to recognize either camera or the SD card. I made sure the camera was on, changed USB port but still no luck.
    I am baffled. Any ideas?

Thank you for your prompt response.  I listed the camera as a Olympus SP570UZ and a KodakC875.  What happens is nothing.  The camera does not mount to the desktop.  I cannot see it in image capture as well.  No I do not have a card reader.  If I buy one will it still create events in iPhoto.
I never reformate the card and that is not the issue because both cameras are recognized by iPhoto 5.04 on my imac G5.  I have a work around provided by me from Apple and that is to import them into the iPhoto on the G5 then put them on the desktop and transfer to a flashdrive then put on the desktop of the MacBook then manually transfer them into iPhoto 9.4.2.  This is a lot of work considering that everything worked fine until the last 2 updates to iPhoto 9.4.2.  I think who ever did the programing for the updates forgot to support older cameras or it has now become Apple's policy not to support older cameras.  I reached out for help because I thought maybe others were having the same problems and maybe they found a solution rather than the card reader.  Thank you Jon

  • Imovie won't recognize camera, english project due tuesday help!!!!

I am using a Sony DCR-TRV480 video camera. I am using a IEEE 1394 6 to 4 firewire to connect it. The tape format is Hi8. I've been told that certain older tapes marked 8mm will not work with Imovie 08 which is what i'm using. The thing is that the same tape i just recorded on, i've pulled video off of before for a different project and it is an 8mm tape. I've tried replacing my firewire, restarting computer, having the camera connected to a power source or not, turning the camera on and off, toggling thru the options on my camera and going back to the play/edit option. I've also heard of people messing with garageband for a while and then trying to import again and also messing with mobileme and then having the import work. I've tried both of those too. When i go into the system profiler and click firewire, it comes up in red saying a list of firewire devices cannot be shown and below in black shows the speed of the firewire port. the computer is a macbook running mac osx 10.5.4. I don't think i have any other info i can put up here. I need help.

See my answer in your other post about iMovie HD 6.
As for your Hi-8 camcorder, it's actually a Digital-8 camcorder.
    Sony's own troubleshooting page http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&externalId =C86798&fes=true&mdl=DCRTRV480 says..
    1. Ensure the i.LINK cable is connected securely to the camcorder and computer.
    2. Ensure the camcorder is turned on and being powered by the supplied AC power adapter.
..So try running the camcorder on its AC power adapter while you're using it with iMovie!

  • Bridge 'get photos from camera' stopped working and Bridge won't recognize my DNG files anymore

So, I've got Bridge set up to get pictures from mem.card whenever I insert one in my laptop (win. 8.1). A week ago I installed Sony's PlayMemories. Without asking me it hijacked Bridge's task of getting pictures from my cards. What's worse, I tried to fire the 'get photos from camera' function manually from Bridge. Bridge starts working, but nothing happens. I uninstalled PlayMemories and reset Bridge, also told my laptop to run Bridge whenever I insert a card. Still nothing happens and I still can't get the 'get photos' function to run manually from Bridge. Anyway, I can still rund the DNG converter to get my pictures, but today Bridge won't recognize my DNG files - worked fine yesterday. I downloaded CS6 from this link https://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-product-downloads.html  and tried to run the installer, but it doesn't seem to do anything. Maybe I need to do a full uninstall off CS6 for it to do anything..?  Anyway, if any of you guys could help me with my Bridge/CS6 issues I'd be grateful.  I've got 3 sets of concert photos and a snowboard comp. shoot I need to finish this week

  • IMOVIE 6 won't recognize DV camera while IDVD is encoding or burning

I am in the process of encoding and burning a dvd in idvd 6. Given the length of this process, I want to also import some video into an imovie 6 project. However, while idvd is encoding, imovie won't recognize my camera.
I understand I can stop idvd, but then will I lose the encoding that has already occurred?
Will imove recognize the camera if I launch idvd after beginning the import into imovie?
Is there a software fix that will prevent idvd from monopolizing the firewire port when it is just encoding video from an imovie project?
This is a very irritating conflict given the time encoding takes in idvd.
    Thanks,
    Knapper
    Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

As Sue suggests, it's not surprising that iDVD doesn't want you to access the camera with iMovie. It's not unusual for applications that perform FireWire-intensive functions—as both iDVD and iMovie do—to want to control the device. If iDVD can't control the camera, it may not be able to perform a task you want it to do. (Remember, iDVD offers several camcorder-dependent functions, including OneStep DVDs.)
While it may be a bit treacherous, you CAN go behind iDVD's back to get it done. The trick is to grab control of the camera before iDVD does. So Quit iDVD after you create, then save the iDVD project, then grab control of the camera with an iMovie HD project, THEN re-open the iDVD project and start encoding. (I tested exporting the iDVD project to a disk image, which is probably safer than burning a physical DVD. Use Disk Utility later to burn the disk image to a physical DVD.)
The iMovie video looked fine here, but your mileage may vary.

  • It won't recognize my camera

Hi. i'm a new mac user. i have nikon coolpix p6000 camera but my macbook won't recognize it.
i bought a card reader and it won't recognize it too. iphoto and image capture are useless in this matter.
by the way, when i look at the usb setting the camera name is actually there.
    Any ideas?

the card reader didn't work at all. but i tried it on a pc and it worked fine.
So you tried the same card in the card reader on a PC and it worked?
Could you view the pics when inserted into the PC?
If so, this tells me that you may have a problem the USB port on your Mac or the card is formatted to something that the Mac does not want to read, unlikely though.
Try a different USB port and make sure that you can view the pics on the camera itself.
Try resetting the SMC and see if that helps ya...

The photo sync is one-way: Computer to phone. Photos synced to your phone will have to be extracted from your phone using third-party software, if you want them on your computer, as Apple makes no provision to do so. Since you're using a Mac, you can use this:
