Won't recognize external drives

Just installed 10.7.3 and now my MacBook won't recognize my external hard drives (for Time Machine or other storage) nor will it recognize digital cameras except through Image Capture. Suggestions? Since posting this I found another post with the same topic, and have posted the info to that string.

Try resetting the bus. Instructions here:

  • New computer won't recognize external drive[s]

Just got an HP Pavilion 500t Desktop with Windows 7.   Although the USB ports (front and back) WILL recognize an 8 Gig thumb drive, we cannot get it to recognize other external drives.   We've tried our old Maxtor 3200 drive (which has all the files from the previous computer) and also a 1 T passport drive that I brought home from work.
What is up with this?   I'm looking for some suggestions, please.
    Thanks

It appears the Maxtor 3200  has an external power supply.  Is the drive showing response to the power pack before plugging into the USB port?  Same for the other drive?
When you state "we cannot get it to recognize other external drives" does that mean the computer does nothing when either one is plugged into the USB port?

  • New iMac won't recognize external drive

My Buffalo external drive won't show up on my new iMac (neither on the screen nor in Disk Utility. The only difference from when it was working before on my old iMac is the new firewire connection.

What kind of cable are you using, if it has a FW400 to FW800 adapter that is probably your problem. If the EHD only has FW on it and no FW 800 then I'd recommend a cable like this one. You can probably pick one up at your local computer store, Radio Shack or of course Amazon. You can also try doing a SMC reset.
    *SMC RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    *PRAM RESET*
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.

  • Macbook Pro 2008 ejects disc and won't recognize external drive

My Macbook Pro 15in 2008 immediately ejects discs.  I have tried opening and cleaning the drive, but no luck.  I went on to connect my external drive, but when I insert the discs, they just spin for a moment, and then stop.  This goes on indefinitely, and there is no way to eject the disc unless I hook the external drive to another computer.  I tried resetting the PRAM, but no luck.  I am running OS X 10.7

    Hi bigdubee,
The exact same thing happened to my 2010 MacBook Pro today.  Restarting with the "option" key held down, I get only 2 of the 3 options you listed in disk utilities ("disk0" and a subfolder of "disk0" labeled "Mac OS x Base system".
Did you take your Macbook Pro to the Apple store?  And were they able to fix it?

  • OS X won't recognize external drive

I bought an external SATA drive, put it into an enclosure, and connected to my laptop. OS X said, "can't recognize drive that you connected; do you want to initialize?" I said yes and it opened the Disk utility, but apparently I tried to partition it before initializing. I got a read/write error.
Now the disk won't show up in Disk utility even though it shows up in System profiler under "USB High-Speed Bus" as "USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge". This is what it says:
    USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge:
    Version: 1.00
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: JMicron
    Product ID: 0x2338
    Serial Number: 152D203380B6
    Vendor ID: 0x152d
Any suggestions on how to get it to work?
    Thanks,
    Peter

If your drive is being bus-powered try using an AC adapter else put a powered USB hub in between. It's possible the external device isn't being supplied sufficient power through the USB bus.

  • MacBook Pro won't recognize external drive via usb, will recognize same drive by firewire.

Title pretty much sums it up. I've had an external firewire 800 drive (Iomega eGo) for about 2 years now. I've got it partitioned and am using part as a time machine backup and the rest as a data storage/ data moving partition. A few days ago I realized that any data I put on either partition can't be copied off by either my computer or either of my two friend's MacBook Pros. The copy starts fine, but then always screeches to a halt around 5% (this is via firewire). This same drive also cannot be recognized via USB by any of our Macs (I plug it in, light comes on, but doesn't blink), but if I plug it into my Windows Desktop the USB recognition is immediate. I found this very strange. I could also copy files off of the drive via USB onto my desktop. If I let it sit long enough on a failed copy on our macbooks eventually it gives me an error code 36. I traced that to a likely hard drive failure on the part of the external. I found this odd because not even 3 days ago I was pulling iTunes songs off the drive onto my desktop with no trouble. Is there any way to fix this via software or the terminal or anything? Disk Utility says both partitions are 'OK'. I'd really like to not spend another chunk of change on an external, as I just spent $180 on a new HDD and SSD for my desktop.
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeremy

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
{ diskutil list; echo; diskutil cs list; } | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • PowerMac G5 quad 2.5 won't recognize external drive..

but my Powerbook G4 which is networked to the Powermac G5 does. It doesn't make any sense to me- I can see and use my external harddrive(LaCie 2T bigger disk) which is connected to my powermac G5, by using my powerbook which is also connected to the powermac G5. Any ideas?
    The G5 works fine otherwise.

    DANODOO-
Try a different cable just to be sure. Try a different port on the G5.
You can reset the firewire bus by shutting everything down, unplugging all devices from the Mac, wait 30 minutes and plug everything back in.
    Luck-

  • My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you

My MacBook pro won't recognize hard drive I put in it. It boots only to a white screen unless I boot to my recovery USB. If I do that then I can select my USB and my external time machine drive in the disk utility, so no problems there. But what do you think it is? It won't recognize any hard drive I put in the machine, so might it be the sata cable?

Boot the Recvoery USB, use Disk Utility to select the internal drive makers namea and size on the left.
Now select erase and select the midde option and click erase, it will take a bit to complete but it's best for the drive.
Now select Partiton tab, click the big box and Options: GUID and then Format: OS X Extended journaled and click apply.
Quit and you should be able to install OS X now with your Apple ID and password.

  • IMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?

iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?  Got a brand new iMac and purchased external speakers for same.  Hooked them into external speaker jack and the computer does not recognize the external speaker jack.  I then plugged them into the external head phone jack and the computer recognized the head phone jack.  How can I get the computer to recognize the speaker jack?

Thanks "a brody," my mistake, I was mistaking the "audio in" jack for a speaker output jack.  I have some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers with a built in amplifier that I am using and they sound beautiful.  I do have them plugged into the correct jack, but was thinking there was a speaker out put and headphone out put.
Thanks again for correcting me, I feel much better now that I know my brand new iMac isn't defective, lol.

    Hi Tom,
I'm so impressed with how you help everyone solve their problems. I will do my best here, but my husband will be home soon and knows how this large external is formatted.
How late do you all work there? I'm on east coast. Is the screen shot you wanted? I opened up external and
    this is what I see.

  • Suddenly Mac mini won't "see" external drives. Possible related to OS software update to 10.6.8?

Suddenly Mac mini won't "see" external drives, neither Firewire nor USB. Possible related to OS software update to 10.6.8? Worked fine under 10.6.4. Any advice? Thanks.

Turns out it was nothing to do with the OS update, it was just a loose cable plug connecting my FireWire/USB hub to the computer. But your tip is a good one -- I'd been wondering why the external drives (even when mounted properly) weren't showing up in the sidebar. Thanks!

  • Computer Won't Recognize Hard Drive

I wanted to do a clean install of OS 10.5.  Wiped hard drive using Tech Tool Pro 4.  Now computer won't recognize hard drive during install.  When it asks to what volume I want to install the OS, the screen is blank.  This is a new one on me.
Anyone have any ideas?  Thank you.

Boot to the Installer/Utilities DVD, but DO NOT Install.
Answer only the "what language" question if presented, and wait a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn. Choose Disk Utility from the Utilities menu or the Installer menu.
Use Disk Utility to Erase the drive again. Be sure you are getting Options GUID partition map.
Then use Disk Utility to partition the drive to one partition, Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
Select the drive and choose Mount. It should not produce an error. Now you are good to go on the Install.

  • P965 won't recognize optical drives and can't undate BIOS thru LiveUpdate

Changed mobo's from amd x2 to P965 Platinum and all went well except that mobo won't recognize optical drives either through USB  or IDE channels. Heard I needed to upgrade the bios but every time I use Live Update it gives me a "Copy file fail" error. The floppy drive works fine for other tasks and copies fine. Changes floppies and no luck and same result. Tried at least 10 times.
    Any help appreciated. Thanks

Before I waste any more time let me try a clean install and see what happens. My old  program drive was an IDE drive and I will see what happens when I install on a SATA drive. I'll be back if problems arise. Thanks to all.
