Won't recognize external hd

I'm a new convert to Mac, the idea of getting a new PC with Vista threw me into a panic and I just bought a new iMac, 20", intel duo, Mac yesterday. Setting it up today it won't read my external Maxtor hard drive. It works fine on windows based computers, but not sure how to make my Mac recognize it, its not appearing anywhere. My whole iTunes library, games, pics and more are on it, I really need to be able to use it as my TimeMachine as well. Someone please help!

I'm also a Mac/ PC guy, Here is what you need. MacDrive............It's an app that makes Pc and Mac talk to each other fine. Since your stuff is already on a Pc formated drive here are the steps you need to take.
1. Get MacDrive on your PC
2. Drop all the stuff off of your HD onto a PC that has MacDrive
3. Format the drive with Mac Specs, you can do this on PC, Just erase the drive and make it journaled
4. On your PC , with MacDrive, it will recognize the new harddrive, drag and drop your stuff onto it.
5. Drag and drop all your stuff onto your mac, or just read from the drive

  • IMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?

iMac 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, running Lion 10.7.3, won't recognize external speaker jack, any suggestions?  Got a brand new iMac and purchased external speakers for same.  Hooked them into external speaker jack and the computer does not recognize the external speaker jack.  I then plugged them into the external head phone jack and the computer recognized the head phone jack.  How can I get the computer to recognize the speaker jack?

Thanks "a brody," my mistake, I was mistaking the "audio in" jack for a speaker output jack.  I have some Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers with a built in amplifier that I am using and they sound beautiful.  I do have them plugged into the correct jack, but was thinking there was a speaker out put and headphone out put.
Thanks again for correcting me, I feel much better now that I know my brand new iMac isn't defective, lol.

  • Won't recognize external drives

Just installed 10.7.3 and now my MacBook won't recognize my external hard drives (for Time Machine or other storage) nor will it recognize digital cameras except through Image Capture. Suggestions? Since posting this I found another post with the same topic, and have posted the info to that string.

  • ? MacBook won't recognize external disc drive

My MacBook's internal disc drive quit, so I'm trying an external Samsung SE-208 slim portable DVD writer.   It worked once, but now the mac won't recognize it.  I tried a DVD switcher app - no luck.  The Samsung plugs into the USB port, starts up OK then disappears from itunes, the desktop, Finder - It's gone. Can I completely disable the internal disc drive?  Would that help?  I appreciate ANY help.   I'm not skilled at these things so you need to spoon feed me.  thanks

  • Intel iMac won't recognize external display with Dynex mini-DVI adapter

I've got an original Intel iMac with a Mini-DVI connection on the back. I'm attempting to hook it up to an external display (a plasma screen, in fact). I picked up a Dynex Mini DVI to Video Adapter DX-AP100 for Apple. This connector has a mini-DVI connector on one end, and both a video-out and an S-video-out on the other.
When attempting to use the adapter, the iMac does not recognize that there is an external display connected. Here are the facts:
The external display: I've tried this with a Panasonic Plasma screen connected directly through S-video, as well as a Pioneer receiver (one that switches video) connected both through s-video and composite video. And yes, I've got the settings on the TV correct. I've also tried this with a Polaroid LCD TV connected via S-video and composite video.
I did notice that when I click "Detect Displays" while the Plasma was connected, the plasma briefly "flashed", implying SOMETHING was happening, but still no dice.
Anyone have any experience with this Dynex DX-AP100 that could share some wisdom?

    Quartz Extreme: Supported

Yeah, I realize S-video is limiting, but I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible. The TV is mounted to the wall and there are not currently any DVI or HDMI cables coming out of it. There's an S-video input from my receiver that I'd prefer to use since it's readily accessible already. In the end my goal is to use Netflix "Watch Now" on the TV, so I'm not too worried about video quality.
and before someone asks if I considered that the receiver's S-video input might be the problem...I tried taking the s-video wire from the stereo and plugging it directly into the adapter. No dice.
ONE ADDITIONAL PIECE of information...while trying to get this to work on an LCD monitor, I plugged the composite video connection from the TV into the adapter. Suddenly the Mac recognized an additional monitor, but it saw it as a VGA monitor, not as s-video or composite video, and no signal went to the TV.
I'm considering trading in this adapter for a mini-DVI to VGA adapter, but that really won't help me with the connection to the TV.

  • Macbook won't recognize external Hard Drive and issues with Time Machine

    Hello everyone,
I have just bought a new Macbook Pro with Mountain Lion and I am currently having problems with Time Machine.
The issue begun in Snow Leopard: Time Machine was taking too long to backup, and would often not finish the backup because the external hard drive would be unwillingly ejected.
Now with Mountain Lion I have reformated the drive (Mac OS Journaled) and about a third of the way through had the same issue: the drive was ejected before the backup could be finished. I restarted the machine and it happened again. However, now the computer won't even recognize the external drive when I plug it in. I have also tried to power off/on the drive itself to no progress.
I have tested the USB port with another drive and the port is fine. I have also tested the usb cable and it is fine. And Disk Utility does not recognize the drive (even when I try the >diskutil list command in terminal).
Now, I can hear the drive humming normally when I turn it on, and it is not usb-powered (my electricity current does fluctuate).
Could the interrupted backup procedures have damaged the drive? And if so, wouldn't the computer recognize it anyway?
It is a 4 year old WD 1 TB that is used exclusively for TM and has never left the house.
Thank you for your time reading this and let me know if you need any more information that could help out.
    Cheers!

From your description, I'd suspect a failing drive. Maybe time for a new external, especially as you've already re-formatted and it's still playing up.
I had a similar problem with one of my clone backups a few weeks ago - it failed, I erased it, re-cloned, worked a couple of times and then it failed again. Disk Utility didn't throw up any errors after re-formatting. I guess all disks die at some point.

  • IMAC won't recognize external hard drive anymore

I am running snow leopard on my IMAC with all the latest software updates. I've been using a LaCie Quadra external hard drive with time machine for backups for awhile with no problems. From the beginning is was plug in the hard drive and go, the mac recognized it. Now, suddenly, it won't. When I turn on the LaCie to back up, the icon no longer pops on the desktop. It is also not listed in the Time Machine preferences anymore. I tried to open the LaCie from Mac systems preferences and get a message with something like "64 bit cannot recognize 32 bit" I am asked to close and reopen system preferences, which would change to 32 bit. I tried that and it did not work, and a report was sent to Apple. Has anyone else been experiencing this? Thanks

    jraguseo wrote:
Thanks. I don't disconnect the drive, only turn it off with it's own power switch. According to LaCie, this should not be a problem.
No, it's not a problem for the drive, but neither is leaving it (and Time Machine) on. Most externals will "spin down" after a few minutes of activity, but even if they don't, modern drives are built to run 24/7.
Time Machine was designed to do quick hourly backups of changes, and will protect you best that way. Just leave both Time Machine and the drive on; they'll be fine.

  • OS X won't recognize external drive

I bought an external SATA drive, put it into an enclosure, and connected to my laptop. OS X said, "can't recognize drive that you connected; do you want to initialize?" I said yes and it opened the Disk utility, but apparently I tried to partition it before initializing. I got a read/write error.
Now the disk won't show up in Disk utility even though it shows up in System profiler under "USB High-Speed Bus" as "USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge". This is what it says:
    USB to ATA/ATAPI Bridge:
    Version: 1.00
    Bus Power (mA): 500
    Speed: Up to 480 Mb/sec
    Manufacturer: JMicron
    Product ID: 0x2338
    Serial Number: 152D203380B6
    Vendor ID: 0x152d
Any suggestions on how to get it to work?
    Thanks,
    Peter
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

If your drive is being bus-powered try using an AC adapter else put a powered USB hub in between. It's possible the external device isn't being supplied sufficient power through the USB bus.

  • CS4 PS won't recognize external

  • Time Machine Won't Recognize External Hard Drive

    Hi there,
My father has a 2009 iMac running Mac OS X 10.8.3. Recently, Time Machine stopped recognizing his external Maxtor OneTouch backup hard drive.
I've tried the whole litany of ideas and tips listed in this forum and other websites:
Rebooting both the desktop and the external hard drive
    Changing USB ports
Checking Disk Utility (won't even display)
Can you offer any solutions? He hasn't had an issue before, so it seems to be an isolated incident. This desktop is for his business, so it's very important for the files to be backed up.
    Thanks.
Update: After submitting this, I received a dialogue box that said the computer cannot read the external hard drive.

If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Boot into Recovery and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the System Management Controller
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive has failed. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • IMac won't recognize external CD/DVD burner

I have an iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, OS 10.4.11. Five months ago, I purchased an external CD/DVD burner (Pioneer DVR-218L) in a multiple interface case from OtherWorldComputing. Everything worked flawlessly... I could burn iTunes CDs on that drive, using Toast I could copy DVDs from my internal drive to the external... life was good.
No longer. The computer simply doesn't recognize that there is an external burner attached.
I'm running it through with Firewire 400 cables, but I also tried Firewire 800 and USB2, with no luck. I've tried resetting the PRAM, and for one brief moment, thought I had licked the problem. I had a blank disk in the external drive and got a message saying that there was an unreadable disk, so I ejected it. Hooray! I put in a CD, which was recognized, momentarily. But when I went to copy those files to the computer, it was no longer recognized. And now I'm back where I was.
Very frustrating, because it had worked so smoothly and now it's not. I've spent much of today reading various message boards seeking an answer. Any suggestions?
    David

Something sporadic like that sounds more like a problem with the drive than with the computer or interface. You've tried several interfaces (FW, USB) which means it isn't just a bad port on the computer. If it was a bad bit of software I wouldn't expect the drive to briefly reappear like that.
When the drive is plugged in, what does Apple System Profiler say about Firewire or USB devices? It could be the enclosure is working but the drive itself is bad.
Have you phoned OWC about this? They have pretty good technical support and one reason for going with them is their reputation for standing behind their goods.

  • IMac Won't Recognize external HDD

Hello Everyone,  I have been at this for eweeks to no end and no resolution.  I'll take you back to the beginning being as specific as I can.
I had a Macbook Pro and used my 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green for time machine backup.  Recently I purchaed an iMac so I set up th HDD to backup my new iMac with time machne and also use it for extra storage.  Worked seemlessly.  Then I noticed sometimes when I would try and access some of my files on the WD HD it would promt me for a password.  I found this to be annoying so I tried tweeking the permissions to allow read write for all users.  Probably not the best idea but I was annoyed having to constantly put in my password eberytime I watched a video.  Didn't work same old problem...So, I just said oh well.  Next I perpared to sell my Macbook Pro so I plugged in the external and began putting all of my files on it that I wanted to keep on the external.  The Macbook Pro was on Lion 7.2 I beleve.  I reisntalled Lion on it thinking it would wipe everyhing off the computer and I soon learned it did not.  It just brought me back to 7.0.  Got frustrated went to sleep.  Next day I plug my external into my iMac and I get nothing...Absolutley nothing...Does not show up under USB in System Profiler.  DOes not show up in disk utility and does not show up in FInder sidebar llike other usb devices do once mounted.  So, I mess around with cords restart computer, etc and get nothing still.  I unplug the exrnal plug it into the Macbook Pro and it works perfectly as it always has before.  Recognizes it intantly with no problems...So, with the Macbook Pro I ran disk utility and erased everything off the HD (I put all the data onto a different external and the iMac recognizes it perfectly fyi) and reformated it to MAC OS X Extended (Journaled) . When it finished I unmount it plug it into iMAc and still get nothing.  I screwed up somewhere along the lines of toying with the file permissions or reinstalling Lion again on the  Macbook Pro.  I have no idea what wnet wrong.  All I know is the Macbook Pro recognizes the drive but my new iMac will no longer recognize it at all.  I have since given the Macbook Pro to my buddy and have been trying to figure out what the **** is wrong with this drive.  Anyone with any ideas/suggegtions I would greatly appreciate it.  Thank You very much for your time.

  • Boot camp won't recognize external speakers

There have been old posts about this before, but since they're archived, it's no longer possible to update the status of this issue.
When using Boot Camp on a Mac Pro, Windows refuses to recognize that external speakers are plugged into the Sound Out jack on Windows Vista (and, I believe, XP).
Does anyone have a solution for this?

This is very weird, for months I had Windows Vista 64 bit working just fine, then suddenly one day I couldn't hear my external speakers, I made sure I had the latest Boot Camp drivers. Nothing no sound only the internal speakers, I even reinstalled Windows Vista again, it didn't solve the problem, then I downloaded the drivers directly from Realtek and neither this solved the sound problem. One
thing I noticed if I jiggle the plug form side to side into the socket of my Mac Pro then I get sound from the external speakers, like if there is a loose wire inside or something like that. Very weird! if there was a loose wire then when I use the Mac OS X side I would have the same issue too. I don't know what's causing the problem.

  • Powerbook G$ won't recognize external HDs

I recently purchased a Hitachi HD for an enclosure to use for a backup HD. I hooked it up and it immediately started clicking. I hooked it up to a PowerPC G5 and it recognizes it. Another guy in our office has a different kind of enclosure that he uses that works on his MacBook. It also doesn't boot on mine. It just starts clicking. I use a Maxtor external regularly and it work fine.
    Any ideas?
    Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.2)

It sounds like you are trying to run a bus-powered disk off a USB port. That would account for the clicking. The G5 and the MacBook I think both have more powerful USB ports than at least early 17" powerbooks did.
A couple suggestions. First, if you want a good backup, you can clone to a Firewire drive and boot from it if your internal disk goes south. You can't boot from a USB drive. So, I will always look for a drive that supports FireWire, and if it wants to do USB, that's ok, too.
Since you apparently have a non-useful USB drive, you might be able to hook a 5.5v power supply to the external drive. Failing that, you might get it to work with an externally powered USB hub. If all else falis, go to other world computing and buy a firewire case, take your drive out of your USB case and install it in the firewire case, and you should be good to go.
Apple's implementation of modern USB into newer computers hasn't really done those of us with older USB ports any favors. Lots of external drive makers have quit making firewire drives, opting for USB2 instead. USB2 on USB 1.1 mac is not very satisfactory, however you slice it!
